The morphological structures of asymmetric poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(1,1'-dihydroperflurooctyl methacrylate) (PEO-b-PFOMA) thin films are examined upon annealing in a compressible fluid, supercritical C[O.sub.2]. The strong affinity between PFOMA and C[O.sub.2] is found which induce phase segregation when annealing PEO-b-PFOMA films at the same temperature as compared with vacuum.

Enterprise systems interoperability (ESI) is an important topic for business currently. This situation is evidenced, at least in part, by the number and extent of potential candidate protocols for such process interoperation, viz., ebXML, BPML, BPEL, and WSCI. Wide-ranging support for each of these candidate standards already exists. However, despite broad acceptance, a sound theoretical evaluation of these approaches has not yet been provided. We use the Bunge-Wand-Weber (BWW) models, in particular, the representation model, to provide the basis for such a theoretical evaluation. We, and other researchers, have shown the usefulness of the representation model for analyzing, evaluating, and engineering techniques in the areas of traditional and structured systems analysis, object-oriented modeling, and process modeling. In this work, we address the question, what are the potential semantic weaknesses of using ebXML alone for process interoperation between enterprise systems? We find that users will lack important implementation information because of representational deficiencies; due to ontological redundancy, the complexity of the specification is unnecessarily increased; and, users of the specification will have to bring in extra-model knowledge to understand constructs in the specification due to instances of ontological excess. Structural and dynamical properties of star melts have been investigated with molecular dynamics simulations of a bead-spring model. Star polymers are known to be heterogeneous, but a systematic simulation study of their properties in melt conditions near the glass transition temperature was lacking. To probe their properties, we have expanded from linear to star polymers the applicability of Dobkowski's chain-length dependence correlation function [Z. Dobkowski, Eur. Polym. J. 18, 563 (1982)]. The density and the isokinetic temperature, based on the canonical definition of the laboratory glass-transition, can be described well by the correlation function and a subtle behavior manifests as the architecture becomes more complex. For linear polymer chains and low functionality star polymers, we find that an increase of the arm length would result in an increase of the density and the isokinetic temperature, but high functionality star polymers have the opposite behavior. The effect between low and high functionalities is more pronounced for short arm lengths. Complementary results such as the specific volume and number of neighbors in contact provide further insights on the subtle relation between structure and dynamics. The findings would be valuable to polymer, colloidal, and nanocomposites fields for the design of materials in absence of solution with the desired properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Thin polystyrene films supported by oxidized silicon (SiOx/Si) substrates may be unstable or metastable, depending on the film thickness, h, and can ultimately dewet the substrate when heated above their glass transition. In the metastable regime, holes nucleate throughout the film and subsequently grow due to capillary driving forces. Recent studies have shown that the addition of a second component, such as a copolymer or miscible polymer, can suppress the dewetting process and stabilize the film. We examined the hole growth dynamics and the hole morphology in thin film mixtures composed of polystyrene and tetramethyl bisphenol-A polycarbonate (TMPC) supported by SiOx/Si substrates. The hole growth velocity decreased with increasing TMPC content beyond that expected from changes in the bulk viscosity. The authors show that the suppression of the dewetting velocity is primarily due to reductions in the capillary driving force for dewetting and to increased friction at the substrate-polymer interface. The viscosity, as determined from the hole growth dynamics, decreases with decreasing film thickness, and is connected to a depression of the glass transition of the film. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We examined the influence of film thickness and composition on the effective T[sub g] of compatible thin film mixtures of polystyrene (PS) and tetramethylbisphenol-A polycarbonate (TMPC) on SiO[sub x]/Si substrates using spectroscopic ellipsometry. Our measurements reveal that while the T[sub g] of TMPC films increased with decreasing film thickness, h, the effective T[sub g] of thin film mixtures of PS and TMPC decreased with decreasing film thickness. In these mixtures, T[sub g] was independent of film thickness at large h. We also found that while the T[sub g] of bulk mixtures of TMPC/PS exhibited large negative deviations from additivity with composition, such deviations were negligible in the thin film mixtures. Green, Marta Indulska Selecting an appropriate business process modelling technique forms an important task within the methodological challenges of a business process management project. While a plethora of available techniques has been developed over the last decades, there is an obvious shortage of well-accepted reference frameworks that can be used to evaluate and compare the capabilities of the different techniques. Academic progress has been made at least in the area of representational analyses that use ontology as a benchmark for such evaluations. This paper reflects on the comprehensive experiences with the application of a model based on the Bunge ontology in this context. A brief overview of the underlying research model characterises the different steps in such a research project. A comparative summary of previous representational analyses of process modelling techniques over time gives insights into the relative maturity of selected process modelling techniques. Based on these experiences suggestions are made as to where ontology-based representational analyses could be further developed and what limitations are inherent to such analyses.
