Abstract

We introduce the notion of infinitesimal variations of mixed Hodge structures and invariants associated to them. We describe these invariants in the case of a pair $(X,Y)$ with $X$ a Fano 3-fold and $Y$ a smooth anticanonical K3 surface and in more detail in the case when $X$ is a cubic threefold. In this last setting, we obtain a generic global Torelli theorem for pairs.

We shall show that a smooth, quasi-projective variety $X$ has a holomorphically convex universal covering $\wt X$ when (i) $\pi_1(X)$ is residually nilpotent and (ii) there is an admissable variation of \mhs\ over $X$ whose monodromy representation has a finite kernel, and where in each case a corresponding period mapping is assumed to be proper.

20. Evaluating the performance of personal, social, health-related, biomarker and genetic data for predicting an individuals future health using machine learning: A longitudinal analysis

Abstract

As we gain access to a greater depth and range of health-related information about individuals, three questions arise: (1) Can we build better models to predict individual-level risk of ill health? (2) How much data do we need to effectively predict ill health? (3) Are new methods required to process the added complexity that new forms of data bring? The aim of the study is to apply a machine learning approach to identify the relative contribution of personal, social, health-related, biomarker and genetic data as predictors of future health in individuals. Using longitudinal data from 6830 individuals in the UK from Understanding Society (2010-12 to 2015-17), the study compares the predictive performance of five types of measures: personal (e.g. age, sex), social (e.g. occupation, education), health-related (e.g. body weight, grip strength), biomarker (e.g. cholesterol, hormones) and genetic single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). The predicted outcome variable was limiting long-term illness one and five years from baseline. Two machine learning approaches were used to build predictive models: deep learning via neural networks and XGBoost (gradient boosting decision trees). Model fit was compared to traditional logistic regression models. Results found that health-related measures had the strongest prediction of future health status, with genetic data performing poorly. Machine learning models only offered marginal improvements in model accuracy when compared to logistic regression models, but also performed well on other metrics e.g. neural networks were best on AUC and XGBoost on precision. The study suggests that increasing complexity of data and methods does not necessarily translate to improved understanding of the determinants of health or performance of predictive models of ill health., Comment: 19 pages

This work is part of a project to construct completions of period mappings. A proper topological SBB-esque completion is constructed. The fibres of are projective varieties, and the image is a union of quasi-projective varieties; one wants to endow the topological completion with a compatible algebraic structure. This raises questions about: (i) the global geometry of the fibres; and (ii) the existence of period matrix representations on neighborhoods of such fibres over which the restricted extension is still proper. Abstract

Statistical confidence in estimates of timber volume, carbon storage, and other forest attributes depends, in part, on the uncertainty in field measurements. Surprisingly, measurement uncertainty is rarely reported, even though national forest inventories routinely repeat field measurements for quality assurance. We compared measurements made by field crews and quality assurance crews in the Forest Inventory and Analysis program of the U.S. Forest Service, using data from 2790 plots and 51740 trees and saplings across the 24 states of the Northern Region. We characterized uncertainty in 12 national core tree-level variables; seven tree crown variables used in forest health monitoring; three variables describing seedlings; and 11 variables describing the site, such as elevation, slope, and distance from a road. Discrepancies in measurement were generally small but were higher for some variables requiring judgment, such as tree class, decay class, and cause of mortality. When scaled up to states, forest types, or the region, uncertainties in basal area, timber volume, and aboveground biomass were negligible. Understanding all sources of uncertainty is important to designing forest monitoring systems, managing the conduct of the inventory, and assessing the uncertainty of forest attributes required for making regional and national forest policy decisions. Abstract

While outdoor advertisements are common features within towns and cities, they may reinforce social inequalities in health. Vulnerable populations in deprived areas may have greater exposure to fast food, gambling and alcohol advertisements encouraging their consumption. Understanding who is exposed and evaluating potential policy restrictions requires a substantial manual data collection effort. To address this problem we develop a deep learning workflow to automatically extract and classify unhealthy advertisements from street-level images. We introduce the Liverpool 360 Street View (LIV360SV) dataset for evaluating our workflow. The dataset contains 25,349, 360 degree, street-level images collected via cycling with a GoPro Fusion camera, recorded Jan 14th - 18th 2020. 10,106 advertisements were identified and classified as food (1335), alcohol (217), gambling (149) and other (8405) (e.g., cars and broadband). We find evidence of social inequalities with a larger proportion of food advertisements located within deprived areas and those frequented by students. Our project presents a novel implementation for the incidental classification of street view images for identifying unhealthy advertisements, providing a means through which to identify areas that can benefit from tougher advertisement restriction policies for tackling social inequalities., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 3 table. Abstract

Materials that combine magnetic order with other desirable physical attributes could find transformative applications in spintronics, quantum sensing, low-density magnets and gas separations. Among potential multifunctional magnetic materials, metal-organic frameworks, in particular, bear structures that offer intrinsic porosity, vast chemical and structural programmability, and the tunability of electronic properties. Nevertheless, magnetic order within metal-organic frameworks has generally been limited to low temperatures, owing largely to challenges in creating a strong magnetic exchange. Here we employ the phenomenon of itinerant ferromagnetism to realize magnetic ordering at TC = 225 K in a mixed-valence chromium(II/III) triazolate compound, which represents the highest ferromagnetic ordering temperature yet observed in a metal-organic framework. The itinerant ferromagnetism proceeds through a double-exchange mechanism, which results in a barrierless charge transport below the Curie temperature and a large negative magnetoresistance of 23% at 5 K. These observations suggest applications for double-exchange-based coordination solids in the emergent fields of magnetoelectrics and spintronics.

Abstract

Looijenga--Lunts and Verbitsky showed that the cohomology of a compact hyper-K\"ahler manifold $X$ admits a natural action by the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{so} (4, b_2(X)-2)$, generalizing the Hard Lefschetz decomposition for compact K\"ahler manifolds. In this paper, we determine the Looijenga--Lunts--Verbitsky (LLV) decomposition for all known examples of compact hyper-K\"ahler manifolds, and propose a general conjecture on the weights occurring in the LLV decomposition, which in particular determines strong bounds on the second Betti number $b_2(X)$ of hyper-K\"ahler manifolds. Specifically, in the $K3^{[n]}$ and $\mathrm{Kum}_n$ cases, we give generating series for the formal characters of the associated LLV representations, which generalize the well-known G\"ottsche formulas for the Euler numbers, Betti numbers, and Hodge numbers for these series of hyper-K\"ahler manifolds. For the two exceptional cases of O'Grady we refine the known results on their cohomology. In particular, we note that the LLV decomposition leads to a simple proof for the Hodge numbers of hyper-K\"ahler manifolds of O'Grady 10 type. In a different direction, for all known examples of hyper-K\"ahler manifolds, we establish the so-called Nagai's conjecture on the monodromy of degenerations of hyper-K\"ahler manifolds. More consequentially, we note that Nagai's conjecture is a first step towards a more general and more natural conjecture, that we state here. 47. Authentic Leadership--Is It More than Emotional Intelligence?

Abstract

One of the newest theories to gain widespread interest is authentic leadership. Part of the rationale for developing a model and subsequent instrument to measure authentic leadership was a concern that the more popular theory, the full range model of leadership and its instrument, the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) (Bass & Avolio, 1985), did not sufficiently emphasize aspects of leader emotional intelligence (EI), such as self-awareness (Avolio & Gardner, 2005). In its current configuration, the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire (ALQ) (Walumba, Avolio, Gardner, Wernsing & Peterson, 2008) measures four dimensions of leadership: relational transparency, internal moral perspective, balanced processing, and self-awareness. In a recent meta-analysis of authentic leadership, Banks, McCauley, Davis, Gardner, and Guler (2016) found that, overall, authentic leadership is highly correlated with transformational leadership (k = 23, N = 5,414, rho = 0.72). The Banks et al. study, however, reported no meta-analytic analyses between emotional intelligence and authentic leadership. In a meta-analysis performed in 2010 by Harms and Crede, self-ratings of emotional intelligence and transformational leadership were highly correlated (k = 47, N = 4,994, rho = 0.56). Given that a) EI is strongly related to transformational leadership, b) authentic leadership is very strongly related to transformational leadership, and c) part of the original rationale for creating a model and instrument to measure authentic leadership included a need to include more self-awareness in a leadership model, exploring the degree to which emotional intelligence is related to authentic leadership is important. In this study, 1,028 working adults completed the Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT) (Schutte, 2009) and the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire (Walumba et al., 2008). The sample was 61% female, 30% held a college degree or higher, and the mean age was 29.6 years. An exploratory factor analysis using the principal components method with varimax rotation resulted in a 2-factor solution. While exploratory in nature, this study indicates that the components of the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire seem to be measuring something different than emotional intelligence measured by the Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test.
