Abstract

This paper explores the portrayal of the Anglo-Irish in Elizabeth Bowen’s The Last September. Bowen writes from personal experience with a strong sense of irony to explore the relationships of this declining class and their relationship with their adopted homeland. As an inhabitant of an Anglo-Irish Big House, Bowen writes from the perspective of the Anglo–Irish but views their deteriorating existence with the clarity of one far more removed. Bowen’s life mirrors that of the protagonist Lois, struggling with issues of identity and escape from an antiquated society. The essay notes the effects this lack of identity has on the characters in the novel and the Anglo–Irish class as a whole at the time it is set. Issues of detachment from land and heritage, lack of communication and relationships between characters, and the ignorance of a middle and upper social class, the Anglo-Irish, to understand their deterioration during the years of the Irish War of Independence are also explored.

Abstract

There are >1.9 million survivors of adolescent and young adult cancers (AYA, diagnosed at ages 15-39) living in the U.S. today. Epidemiologic studies to address the cancer burden in this group have been a relatively recent focus of the research community. In this article, we discuss approaches and data resources for cancer epidemiology and health services research in the AYA population. We consider research that uses data from cancer registries, vital records, healthcare utilization, and surveys, and the accompanying challenges and opportunities of each. To illustrate the strengths of each data source, we present example research questions or areas that are aligned with these data sources and salient to AYAs. Integrating the respective strengths of cancer registry, vital records, healthcare data, and survey-based studies sets the foundation for innovative and impactful research on AYA cancer treatment and survivorship to inform a comprehensive understanding of diverse AYA needs and experiences.

Abstract

One critical approach for promoting the efficiency of memory is to adopt selective encoding strategies to prioritize more valuable information. Past neuroimaging studies have shown that value-directed modulation of verbal memory depends heavily on the engagement of left-lateralized semantic processing regions, particularly in the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC). In the present study, we used high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) to seek evidence for a causal role of left VLPFC in supporting the memory advantage for high-value items. Three groups of healthy young adult participants were presented with lists of words to remember, with each word accompanied by an arbitrarily assigned point value. During the first session, all participants received sham stimulation as they encoded five lists of 30 words each. Two of these lists were immediately tested with free recall, with feedback given to allow participants to develop metacognitive insight and strategies to maximize their point total. The second session had the exact same structure as the first, but the groups differed in whether they received continued sham stimulation (N = 22) or anodal stimulation of the left VLPFC (N = 21) or right VLPFC (N = 20). Those lists not tested with immediate recall were tested with recognition judgments after a one-day delay. Since no brain stimulation was applied during this Day 2 test, any performance differences can be attributed to the effects of stimulation on Day 1 encoding processes. Anodal stimulation of left VLPFC significantly boosted participants' memory encoding selectivity. In comparison, no such effect was seen in participants who received right VLPFC or sham stimulation. Estimates of recollection- and familiarity-based responding revealed that left VLPFC stimulation specifically amplified the effects of item value on recollection. These results demonstrate a causal role for left VLPFC in the implementation of selective value-directed encoding strategies, putatively by boosting deep semantic processing of high-value words. Our findings also provide further evidence on the hemispheric lateralization of value-directed verbal memory encoding.

Abstract

BackgroundSeasonal outbreaks of infectious conjunctivitis remain a public health issue. Determination of outbreak etiologies in the context of a worldwide pandemic may provide useful information to guide public health strategies. The aim of this study was to identify pathogens associated with outpatient infectious conjunctivitis during the COVID-19 Delta surge.MethodsThis prospective study was conducted from April 2021 to September 2021. All outpatients presenting to the Aravind Eye Center (Madurai, India) with signs and symptoms consistent with acute infectious conjunctivitis were eligible. Three swabs were obtained from each participant: one from each conjunctiva and one from the anterior nares. Samples were processed for metagenomic RNA deep sequencing (RNA-seq).ResultsSamples from 106 study participants were sequenced. The most common presenting symptoms were tearing (86%) and itching (71%). Preauricular lymphadenopathy was present in 38% of participants. 20% of participants had close contacts with similar symptoms. Systemic symptoms such as coughing, runny nose, vomiting or diarrhea were uncommonly reported. 60% of all participants used some medicated eye drops upon enrollment. 75% of study participants demonstrated infection with human adenovirus D (HAdV-D). 11% of conjunctivitis was associated with SARS-CoV-2. 15% had no definitive pathogen detected. 8% of all participants had codetection of more than one pathogen on RNA-seq.ConclusionsDuring the COVID-19 Delta surge in India, HAdV-D was the most common pathogen associated with infectious conjunctivitis. SARS-CoV-2 was the second most common associated pathogen. Seasonal surveillance may be necessary for the determination of emerging and reemerging pathogens responsible for infectious conjunctivitis.

33. Supporting Faculty to 'Do the Flip!' Lessons Learned When Transitioning Faculty to Active Pedagogy in the Classroom

Abstract

San José State University, in partnership with California State University-Los Angeles and Cal Poly Pomona, are developing supportive methods to transition STEM faculty from lecture-based instruction to instruction using active learning pedagogies. These efforts, sponsored by the Department of Education's First in the World Grant Program, focus on providing faculty training through workshops conducted in the active learning model, resources to support their material development, and peer support through access to multi-disciplinary/multi-campus learning communities. Active learning pedagogies like the flipped classroom have been shown to be a high impact practice that increases URM student success and retention. The partner campuses, all part of the California State University System, are all designated Hispanic-Service Institutions and Minority-Serving Institutions. While their designations are similar, their demographics are not. Each campus has their own unique student and faculty makeup. These varied demographics provide a level of rigor to materials collaboratively developed and tested across the campuses. Activities and materials developed follow the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework, which states that an educational experience is a blend of social presence (establishing strong relationships), cognitive presence (moving beyond understanding to exploration, integration, and application), and teaching presence (a combination of environment and directed facilitation components). Materials developed to train, support, and evaluate faculty will be presented, along with sharing lessons learned about support needed from all levels of administration to create a culture of change across STEM education. Lessons learned will include ways to avoid the "slump" often seen with student success as faculty implement new teaching and supporting peer evaluations for promotion when the evaluator is unfamiliar with active learning.

40. Analyzing the Effects of a Flipped Classroom Pedagogy on Freshmen and Sophomore STEM Courses

Abstract

This Research-to-Practice paper, a work-in-progress, describes work supported by the First in the World program at three different universities in California. A consortium of three California State Universities (CSUs)- San Jose´ State University, California State University- Los Angeles, and Cal Poly Pomona - have a four-year grant from the U.S Department of Education First-in-the-World (FITW) program. Surveys of students revealed that a major challenge to success is course bottlenecks - impasses where they cannot enroll in a course they need to make progress toward their degrees or when they cannot successfully complete a course and move forward. All three campuses have large numbers of high-need and underrepresented students (URM) and URM students are overrepresented among students who receive low grades in bottleneck courses. To address course bottlenecks, the flipped classroom approach has been implemented in seven gateway STEM courses collaboratively across the partner campuses. This paper targets faculty and administrators interested in promoting and implementing the flipped classroom pedagogy at their institutions. It provides a brief overview of the target courses and the impact of the curricular changes thus far. In addition, a description of the in-depth Calculus study of the flipped classroom approach across the three campuses is discussed.

45. Flipping STEM Classrooms Collaboratively across Campuses in California

Abstract

San José State University, in partnership with California State University-Los Angeles and Cal Poly Pomona, was awarded a prestigious 2015 First in the World grant, sponsored by the Department of Education. The multi-campus effort is focused on bringing the flipped classroom model to seven STEM gateway courses over three years that have high failure rates through collaborative efforts from faculty on the three partner campuses. SJSU, CSULA, and CPP are all designated Hispanic-Serving Institutions and Minority-Serving Institutions, though their demographics are very different. High impact practices like the flipped classroom approach have been shown to increase URM student success and retention. Development/selection of course materials that promote active learning and student engagement is shared among the faculty collaborators, a divide-and-conquer approach to overcoming the often overwhelming challenge of creating a full length flipped classroom. The first courses currently being flipped are Calculus I and Physics I. In addition to promoting student success through active learning pedagogy, our approach also includes a multi-disciplinary, cross-campus faculty learning community (FLC) that serves as a model of active learning for our faculty, as well as providing training and support during development and implementation of the flipped classroom. Our flipped classroom model and FLC are based on the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework, which states that an educational experience is a blend of social presence (establishing strong relationships), cognitive presence (moving beyond understanding to exploration, integration, and application), and teaching presence (a combination of environment and directed facilitation components). Initial data on student success as a result of the flipped classroom implementation in Calculus I and Physics I will be presented. In addition to student success data, qualitative data on student and faculty satisfaction with the flipped classroom will also be presented.
