Recent years have seen increasing awareness of the wide range of mental health problems faced by students. Gatekeeper training has been shown to have a positive impact on knowledge and attitudes about suicide prevention, although the evidence for skills acquisition is limited. We utilised the STORM® training package in an exploratory study to determine explore whether skills training could be successfully implemented in an educational establishment in the United Kingdom. In a pilot study assessing competence before and after the intervention there was evidence of acquisition of skills, improved attitudes and increased confidence. Further research should include a randomised controlled trial of such training.

There is scarce and conflicting information on how Turkish immigrants express, experience, and understand common mental health difficulties (CMHDs) as well as their preferences and needs. This conflict often emerges in the literature around symptom presentation and the causal attributions of CMHDs. Since inconsistent information may have real life consequences for Turkish immigrants it is important to investigate this area. The aim of this review was to explore the experiences and understandings of common mental health difficulties of Turkish immigrants. A systematic review using thematic synthesis adopted from Thomas & Harden (2008) was conducted to evaluate the existing literature. CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsycArticles and PsychInfo were searched. Only qualitative studies conducted with Turkish immigrants with lived experience were included (n = 10). The analysis was data-driven (inductive) leading to three themes with twelve subthemes being generated. Participants reported experiencing both emotional and physical symptoms. They linked their distress to significant life events and chronic adverse conditions, interpersonal conflict, immigration and discrimination related problems and problematic encounters with healthcare workers. Traditional/spiritual and biological understandings of mental health were also discussed. Family and social support, personal resources, and the utilisation of medical and traditional/spiritual resources were reported as coping strategies, though some were sceptical about the latter. This review found that Turkish immigrants experienced and expressed their distress in both emotional and physical terms, just like many other communities. Their understandings were mainly psychosocial but contained elements of biomedical and traditional models. Since research in this area is limited, further and better research is recommended. Violence in the community can impact access to health care. This scoping review examines the impact of urban violence upon youth (aged 15–24) access to sexual and reproductive health and trauma care in Low and Middle Income Countries (LMICs). We searched key electronic health and other databases for primary peer-reviewed studies from 2010 through June 2020. Thirty five of 6712 studies extracted met criteria for inclusion. They were diverse in terms of study objective and design but clear themes emerged. First, youth experience the environment and interpersonal relationships to be violent which impacts their access to health care. Second, sexual assault care is often inadequate, and stigma and abuse are sometimes reported in treatment settings. Third is the low rate of health seeking among youth living in a violent environment. Fourth is the paucity of literature focusing on interventions to address these issues. The scoping review suggests urban violence is a structural and systemic issue that, particularly in low-income areas in LMICs, contributes to framing the conditions for accessing health care. There is a gap in evidence about interventions that will support youth to access good quality health care in complex scenarios where violence is endemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chronic illness such as multiple sclerosis (MS) is often associated with 'biographical disruption', a concept that is derived from qualitative narrative analyses examining how people make sense of their illness in the context of their lives [Bury, M. This paper attempts to operationalise the idea of disruption to one's life trajectory in quantitative analysis by examining the social, economic and emotional disruption associated with MS. A number of studies have suggested that it impacts negatively on employment, income and sexual relationships; however previous research has been based upon samples of people with MS (pwMS), with a dearth of studies comparing pwMS with the general population. This study reports a systematic comparison of MS and non-MS households to enable the impact of MS to be quantified in terms of household composition and marital status: household income: economic activity; and to determine whether biographical disruptions such as relationship breakdown or unemployment are more or less prevalent among those affected by MS compared to the general population. The MS sample came from randomly selected members of the UK MS Society (n = 783) and those accessing the MS Society website (n = 133). Data for the general population came from the 2001/02 British General Household Survey (GHS). Cases from the MS Society sample were matched using propensity scoring with cases from the GHS. The results of the matched analysis show that both men and women with MS are significantly less likely to be employed than those in the general population and are significantly more likely to have a 'below average' household income, despite the fact that they are in a higher social class and have higher educational levels than people in the general population. Differences between the MS and GHS samples in terms of marital status become non-significant when socio-demographic variables are controlled for using propensity scoring. This study provides robust evidence on how MS impacts on and disrupts the life of the person with MS and their household in terms of income and employment. This examination of how Chinese migrant women resident in England engage with Western and Chinese healthcare systems when seeking treatment considers whether medical pluralism can enhance the cultural appropriateness of health care. The paper identifies the extent to which women's pathways to healthcare can be seen as 'Chinese' or as a reflection of the Western culture in which they live. It is based on an analysis of in-depth interviews with 42 women of Chinese origin living in the South East of England. Their use of Western and Chinese medicine is related to explanatory models underpinning health beliefs, treatment barriers encountered and resources drawn upon when seeking treatment. Variation is described, with some women using only Western medicine and others returning to their place of origin for indigenous Chinese medical treatment. Most, however, draw upon both medical systems. Women who are more connected with majority English culture are more successful in their consultations with Western health service practitioners but do not necessarily discontinue using Chinese medicine. We find that recourse to two different systems helps to overcome barriers when accessing health care. The health policy implications of the findings would suggest that a system that acknowledges and embraces medical pluralism would assist the development of culturally appropriate healthcare provision. Stigma is a feature of HIV disease and many people who are HIV-positive report that their lives are affected by fear of discrimination (felt stigma). Although opinions do not necessarily predict behaviour, this article examines whether the public's avowed attitudes to people with HIV are as punitive and stigmatizing as those infected think they are, and the extent to which public attitudes may contribute to felt stigma. A street survey was conducted in Glasgow and Edinburgh, Scotland, asking a stratified quota sample of 300 men and women of all ages to complete a short questionnaire about their attitudes toward people with HIV. The same questionnaire was also completed by 42 men and women with HIV. One in five respondents in the street survey, and all of those with HIV, were also asked to complete the questionnaire imagining that they were a typical member of the public, to find out whether both groups attributed more hostile attitudes to generalized others than they themselves professed. Overall, the general public had relatively liberal views about people with HIV although a majority felt that some restrictions should be placed upon their freedom. Controlling for age, sex, socioeconomic status and city, people with HIV had more liberal attitudes than the general public, but perceived public attitudes to be far less liberal than were reported in the street survey. Respondents in the street survey also perceived generalized others to be less liberal than themselves. These results provide evidence of felt stigma among people with HIV and the policy implications are discussed. The findings are also set within a theoretical framework concerning the nature of attitudes, their relationship to behaviours, and the pervasiveness of negative images associated with AIDS. Women researchers involved in the survey of sexual behavior in humans faced the threat of sexual abuse by male subjects who took advantage of the situation, using the provocative questions as an excuse to impose their sexuality on the women researchers. The analysis of the experiences of four women researchers in Glasgow who faced sexual harassment during their survey of HIV-associated risk factors related to sexual behaviors was aimed at identifying the factors contributing to such incidents.
