High Energy Physics - Experiment ,Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
The ReadOut System (ROS) is a central part of the data acquisition (DAQ) system of the ATLAS Experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The system is responsible for receiving and buffering event data from all detector subsystems and serving these to the High Level Trigger (HLT) system via a 10 GbE network, discarding or transporting data onward once the trigger has completed its selection process. The ATLAS ROS was completely replaced during the 2013-2014 experimental shutdown in order to meet the demanding conditions expected during LHC Run 2 and Run 3 (2015-2025). The ROS consists of roughly one hundred Linux-based 2U-high rack-mounted servers equipped with PCIe I/O cards and 10 GbE interfaces. This paper documents the system requirements for LHC Runs 2 and 3 and the design choices taken to meet them. The results of performance measurements and the re-use of ROS technology for the development of data sources, test platforms for other systems, and another ATLAS DAQ system component, namely the Region of Interest Builder (RoIB), are also discussed. Finally performance results for Run 2 operations are presented before looking at the upgrade for Run 3., Comment: 40 pages, 18 figures, journal paper

Nanodiamonds containing negatively charged nitrogen vacancy centres (${\text{NV}}^{-}$) have applications as localized sensors in biological material and have been proposed as a platform to probe the macroscopic limits of spatial superposition and the quantum nature of gravity. A key requirement for these applications is to obtain nanodiamonds containing ${\text{NV}}^{-}$ with long spin coherence times. Using milling to fabricate nanodiamonds processes the full 3D volume of the bulk material at once, unlike etching, but has, up to now, limited ${\text{NV}}^{-}$ spin coherence times. Here, we use natural isotopic abundance nanodiamonds produced by ${\text{Si}}_{3}{\text{N}}_{4}$ ball milling of bulk diamond grown by chemical vapour deposition with an average single substitutional nitrogen concentration of $121 ~\text{ppb}$. We show that the electron spin coherence times of ${\text{NV}}^{-}$ centres in these nanodiamonds can exceed $400 ~\mu\text{s}$ at room temperature with dynamical decoupling. Scanning electron microscopy provides images of the specific nanodiamonds containing ${\text{NV}}^{-}$ for which a spin coherence time was measured., Comment: Vresion 1: 13 pages, 7 figures. Computer Science - Cryptography and Security - Abstract
Over the last decade, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) have been increasingly targeted by attackers to obtain control over industrial processes that support critical services. Such targeted attacks typically require detailed knowledge of system-specific attributes, including hardware configurations, adopted protocols, and PLC control-logic, i.e. process comprehension. The consensus from both academics and practitioners suggests stealthy process comprehension obtained from a PLC alone, to conduct targeted attacks, is impractical. In contrast, we assert that current PLC programming practices open the door to a new vulnerability class based on control-logic constructs. To support this, we propose the concept of Process Comprehension at a Distance (PCaaD), as a novel methodological and automatable approach for system-agnostic exploitation of PLC library functions, leading to the targeted exfiltration of operational data, manipulation of control-logic behavior, and establishment of covert command and control channels through unused memory. We validate PCaaD on widely used PLCs, by identification of practical attacks., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables

Physics - Applied Physics - Abstract
We demonstrate a simple, robust and contactless method for non-destructive testing of magnetic materials such as steel. This uses a fiber-coupled magnetic sensor based on nitrogen vacancy centers (NVC) in diamond without magnetic shielding. Previous NVC magnetometry has sought a homogeneous bias magnetic field, but in our design we deliberately applied an inhomogeneous magnetic field. As a consequence of our experimental set-up we achieve a high spatial resolution: 1~mm in the plane parallel and 0.1~mm in the plane perpendicular to the surface of the steel. Structural damage in the steel distorts this inhomogeneous magnetic field and by detecting this distortion we reconstruct the damage profile through quantifying the shifts in the NVC Zeeman splitting. This works even when the steel is covered by a non-magnetic material. The lift-off distance of our sensor head from the surface of 316 stainless steel is up to 3~mm.

Physics - Applied Physics - Abstract
Sensing small magnetic fields is relevant for many applications ranging from geology to medical diagnosis. We present a fiber-coupled diamond magnetometer with a sensitivity of (310 $\pm$ 20) pT$/\sqrt{\text{Hz}}$ in the frequency range of 10-150 Hz. This is based on optically detected magnetic resonance of an ensemble of nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond at room temperature. Fiber coupling means the sensor can be conveniently brought within 2 mm of the object under study.

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
We report the first experimental observation of a doubly-charged defect in diamond, SiV2-, in silicon and nitrogen co-doped samples. We measure spectroscopic signatures we attribute to substitutional silicon in diamond, and identify a silicon-vacancy complex decorated with a nearest-neighbor nitrogen, SiVN, supported by theoretical calculations. Samples containing silicon and nitrogen are shown to be heavily photochromic, with the dominant visible changes due to the loss of SiV0/- and gain in the optically-inactive SiV2-.

Quantum Physics ,Condensed Matter - Materials Science ,Physics - Optics - Abstract
Three-dimensional arrays of silicon transistors increase the density of bits. Solid-state qubits are much larger so could benefit even more from using the third dimension given that useful fault-tolerant quantum computing will require at least 100,000 physical qubits and perhaps one billion. Here we use laser writing to create 3D arrays of nitrogen-vacancy centre (NVC) qubits in diamond. This would allow 5 million qubits inside a commercially available 4.5x4.5x0.5 mm diamond based on five nuclear qubits per NVC and allowing $(10 \mu m)^3$ per NVC to leave room for our laser-written electrical control. The spin coherence times we measure are an order of magnitude longer than previous laser-written qubits and at least as long as non-laser-written NVC. As well as NVC quantum computing, quantum communication and nanoscale sensing could benefit from the same platform. Our approach could also be extended to other qubits in diamond and silicon carbide., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
We report on measurements of magnetic field and temperature dependence of antiferromagnetic resonances in the prototypical antiferromagnet NiO. The frequencies of the magnetic resonances in the vicinity of 1 THz have been determined in the time-domain via time-resolved Faraday measurements after selective excitation by narrow-band superradiant terahertz (THz) pulses at temperatures down to 3K and in magnetic fields up to 10 T. The measurements reveal two antiferromagnetic resonance modes, which can be distinguished by their characteristic magnetic field dependencies. The nature of the two modes is discussed by comparison to an eight-sublattice antiferromagnetic model, which includes superexchange between the next-nearest-neighbor Ni spins, magnetic dipolar interactions, cubic magneto-crystalline anisotropy, and Zeeman interaction with the external magnetic field. Our study indicates that a two-sublattice model is insufficient for the description of spin dynamics in NiO, while the magnetic-dipolar interactions and magneto-crystalline anisotropy play important roles., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Condensed Matter - Materials Science ,Quantum Physics - Abstract
The neutrally-charged silicon vacancy in diamond is a promising system for quantum technologies that combines high-efficiency, broadband optical spin polarization with long spin lifetimes (T2 ~ 1 ms at 4 K) and up to 90% of optical emission into its 946 nm zero-phonon line. However, the electronic structure of SiV0 is poorly understood, making further exploitation difficult. Performing photoluminescence spectroscopy of SiV0 under uniaxial stress, we find the previous excited electronic structure of a single 3A1u state is incorrect, and identify instead a coupled 3Eu - 3A2u system, the lower state of which has forbidden optical emission at zero stress and so efficiently decreases the total emission of the defect: we propose a solution employing finite strain to form the basis of a spin-photon interface. Isotopic enrichment definitively assigns the 976 nm transition associated with the defect to a local mode of the silicon atom.

We demonstrate optical spin polarization of the neutrally-charged silicon-vacancy defect in diamond ($\mathrm{SiV^{0}}$), an $S=1$ defect which emits with a zero-phonon line at 946 nm. The spin polarization is found to be most efficient under resonant excitation, but non-zero at below-resonant energies. We measure an ensemble spin coherence time $T_2>100~\mathrm{\mu s}$ at low-temperature, and a spin relaxation limit of $T_1>25~\mathrm{s}$. Optical spin state initialization around 946 nm allows independent initialization of $\mathrm{SiV^{0}}$ and $\mathrm{NV^{-}}$ within the same optically-addressed volume, and $\mathrm{SiV^{0}}$ emits within the telecoms downconversion band to 1550 nm: when combined with its high Debye-Waller factor, our initial results suggest that $\mathrm{SiV^{0}}$ is a promising candidate for a long-range quantum communication technology.

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
The defect in diamond formed by a vacancy surrounded by three nearest-neighbor nitrogen atoms and one carbon atom, $\mathrm{N}_{3}\mathrm{V}$, is found in $\approx98\%$ of natural diamonds. Despite $\mathrm{N}_{3}\mathrm{V}^{0}$ being the earliest electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum observed in diamond, to date no satisfactory simulation of the spectrum for an arbitrary magnetic field direction has been produced due to its complexity. In this work, $\mathrm{N}_{3}\mathrm{V}^{0}$ is identified in $^{15}\mathrm{N}$-doped synthetic diamond following irradiation and annealing. The $\mathrm{^{15}N}_{3}\mathrm{V}^{0}$ spin Hamiltonian parameters are revised and used to refine the parameters for $\mathrm{^{14}N}_{3}\mathrm{V}^{0}$, enabling the latter to be accurately simulated and fitted for an arbitrary magnetic field direction. Study of $\mathrm{^{15}N}_{3}\mathrm{V}^{0}$ under excitation with green light indicates charge transfer between $\mathrm{N}_{3}\mathrm{V}$ and $\mathrm{N_s}$. It is argued that this charge transfer is facilitated by direct ionization of $\mathrm{N}_{3}\mathrm{V}^{-}$, an as-yet unobserved charge state of $\mathrm{N}_{3}\mathrm{V}$.

A detailed study of hadronic interactions is presented using data recorded with the highly granular CALICE silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter. Approximately 350,000 selected negatively charged pion events at energies between 2 and 10 GeV have been studied. The predictions of several physics models available within the Geant4 simulation tool kit are compared to this data. A reasonable overall description of the data is observed; the Monte Carlo predictions are within 20% of the data, and for many observables much closer. The largest quantitative discrepancies are found in the longitudinal and transverse distributions of reconstructed energy., Comment: 28 pages, 24 figures, accepted for publication in NIM A

Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors ,High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The EUDET-project was launched to create an infrastructure for developing and testing new and advanced detector technologies to be used at a future linear collider. The aim was to make possible experimentation and analysis of data for institutes, which otherwise could not be realized due to lack of resources. The infrastructure comprised an analysis and software network, and instrumentation infrastructures for tracking detectors as well as for calorimetry., Comment: 54 pages, 48 pictures

Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
A data acquisition (DAQ) system has been developed which will read out and control calorimeters serving as prototype systems for a future detector at an electron-positron linear collider. This is a modular, flexible and scalable DAQ system in which the hardware and signals are standards-based, using FPGAs and serial links. The idea of a backplaneless system was also pursued with a commercial development board housed in a PC and a chain of concentrator cards between it and the detector forming the basis of the system. As well as describing the concept and performance of the system, its merits and disadvantages are discussed., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted by JINST. Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The structure of the 18O nucleus at excitation energies above the alpha decay threshold was studied using 14C+alpha resonance elastic scattering. A number of states with large alpha reduced widths have been observed, indicating that the alpha-cluster degree of freedom plays an important role in this N not equal Z nucleus. However, the alpha-cluster structure of this nucleus is very different from the relatively simple pattern of strong alpha-cluster quasi-rotational bands in the neighboring 16O and 20Ne nuclei. A 0+ state with an alpha reduced width exceeding the single particle limit was identified at an excitation energy of 9.9+/-0.3 MeV. We discuss evidence that states of this kind are common in light nuclei and give possible explanations of this feature., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, 1 table. High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
A detailed study is presented of the expected performance of the ATLAS detector. The reconstruction of tracks, leptons, photons, missing energy and jets is investigated, together with the performance of b-tagging and the trigger. The physics potential for a variety of interesting physics processes, within the Standard Model and beyond, is examined. The study comprises a series of notes based on simulations of the detector and physics processes, with particular emphasis given to the data expected from the first years of operation of the LHC at CERN.

A pion-quark pairing temperature is defined by a BCS-like relation identified from a quark-level Goldberger-Treiman relation with a Nambu scalar mass "gap parameter" taken in the low-mass limit. This intuitive relation predicts the associated "experimental" lattice-gauge pairing temperature. The opposite high-mass limit predicts the sigma mass, and notably has a predictive analog in high-Tc superconductivity in the stable nondispersive energy gap as defined by Thornber-Feynman polaron dynamics., Comment: 14 pages, 1 figure

Nuclear Experiment ,Astrophysics - Abstract
The reaction 13C(alpha,n) is considered to be the main source of neutrons for the s-process in AGB stars. At low energies the cross section is dominated by the 1/2+ 6.356 MeV sub-threshold resonance in 17O whose contribution is determined with a very large uncertainty of ~1000% at stellar temperatures. In this work we performed the most precise determination of the low-energy astrophysical S factor using the indirect asymptotic normalization (ANC) technique. The alpha-particle ANC for the sub-threshold state has been measured using the sub-Coulomb alpha-transfer reaction (6Li,d). Using the determined ANC we calculated S(0), which turns out to be an order of magnitude smaller than in the NACRE compilation., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Condensed Matter - Superconductivity - Abstract
Directional coupling of Thornber-Feynman polarization with the high-Tc ARPES distribution specifies the optimum flatband pseudogap \Delta and mobile localized quasiparticle. This coupling peaks by tuning the statistics and interaction energy to produce stable short-ranged directional pairing that reflects the lattice asymmetry. Analogous energy gap and BCS ratio parameters are identified for low-Tc long-range acoustical phonons and for quark-anti-quark tightly bound chiral pions in particle physics., Comment: 25 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Physica B
