Within the frame of the sub-series Athenian Dialogues, this volume comprises a selected number of talks delivered at the annual Seminar of the Research Centre for Greek and Latin Literature of the Academy of Athens 2018-2019 on the broad topic of Ancient Greek Literature and the Foreign. The volume aims at building on the ongoing dialogue on the par excellence intricate, as well as timely issues of'ethnicity,'identity, and identification, as represented in ancient Greek (and, secondarily, Roman) literature. This is certainly a richly researched field, which extends to interdisciplinary areas of inquiry, namely those of classical studies, archaeology, ancient history, sociology, and anthropology. It is this interdisciplinary scope that makes the subject all the more relevant and worthy of investigation. The volume ultimately highlights new or under-researched aspects of the broad theme of ancient inter-cultural relations, which could in their turn lead to more detailed or more specified inquiries on this ever relevant and important, as well as universal, topic. Through the contributions of expert scholars on these areas of inquiry (Konstan, Lefkowitz, Paschalis, Seaford, Thomas, Vasounia, Vlassopoulos), the volume: (1) revisits key themes and aspects of the ancient Greek world's diverse forms of contact with foreign peoples and civilizations, (2) lays forth new data about specific such contacts and encounters or (3) formulates new questions about the very texture and essence of the theme of inter-cultural relations and forms of communication. More specifically, the volume addresses the following themes: the overarching role and function of the barbarian repertoire in Greek literature and culture, which certainly call for further theoretical investigation (Vlassopoulos); the highly popular but actually controversial theme of xenia in the Homeric epics and in archaic thought (Konstan); the intricate, intriguing role of the Foreigner as a focus for civic unity (Seaford); the role of the enigmatic figure of Dionysus from Greece to India (Vasunia); the representation of barbarians in Euripidean tragedy, and more specifically the portrayal of the controversial Phrygian slave in Euripides'Orestes (Lefkowitz); the meaningful changes in the representation of the arch-enemy, the Persians, across the late 5th and 4th century prose (Thomas); the adventures of Europa's legendary abduction from Moschus to Nonnus, along with its implications for the understanding of the division and animosity between the two continents, (future) Europe and Asia (Paschalis). The volume ultimately covers a wide range of ancient sources (literary and material, from Homer up to Nonnus) that delve into the interaction of ancient Greek civilization with foreign civilizations. It thus highlights new aspects of the diverse forms of contact of the Greek world with foreign civilizations and elements, both in terms of geography and particular seminal'mythical'or historical figures and forces (e.g. India and the'mysterious'Dionysus, as well as the emblematic Greek antagonist of the classical and post-classical era, i.e. the Persian Empire) and in terms of particular literary themes and motifs (e.g. the abduction of Europa).

'The aim of this book is to provide new insights on the multi-faceted topic of the relationships between ancient Greece and ancient Anatolia before the Classical era. This is a rapidly evolving field of enquiry, thanks to the recent advances in our understanding of the Anatolian languages and the ever-growing availability of primary evidence. The chapters in this volume investigate the question of Graeco-Anatolian contacts from various points of view and with a specifically linguistic and textual focus. The nature of the evidence calls for an interdisciplinary approach, and therefore the volume includes contributions ranging from writing systems to contact linguistics, without excluding the analysis of cultural motifs and religious practices in both literary texts and non-literary (mainly epigraphic) evidence'--

Although ancient hope has attracted much scholarly attention in the past, this is the first book-length discussion of the topic. The introduction offers a systematic discussion of the semantics of Greek elpis and Latin spes and addresses the difficult question of whether hope -ancient and modern- is an emotion. On the other hand, the 16 contributions deal with specific aspects of hope in Greek and Latin literature, history and art, including Pindar's poetry, Greek tragedy, Thucydides, Virgil's epic and Tacitus'Historiae. The volume also explores from a historical perspective the hopes of slaves in antiquity, the importance of hope for the enhancement of stereotypes about the barbarians, and the depiction of hope in visual culture, providing thereby a useful tool not only for classicist but also for philosophers, cultural historians and political scientists.

La varietà di applicazione del concetto di'mediazione'è ampia e non conosce confini geografici e limiti di tempo. I settori in cui esso opera sono i più diversi e investono pressoché tutto l'agire dell'essere umano, diviso tra il conflitto e l'accordo, la guerra e la pace, il sopruso e la sopportazione, la pena e la colpa. Trasferendoci nell'antica Grecia, la varietà degli approcci, da quello legale a quello politico/diplomatico, da quello filosofico a quello sportivo, da quello religioso a quello familiare hanno convinto i curatori del volume a circoscrivere la ricerca e a rivolgere l'indagine verso il testo letterario, cioè il testo pervenuto per iscritto, sia esso più propriamente poetico, drammatico o storiografico. Il testo - anche quello scritto su pietra o su altro materiale non deperibile - rappresenta la fonte principale per ciò che sappiamo sulla mediazione nel periodo più antico della storia greca e si configura, pertanto, come il mezzo più idoneo a ricostruire la fattualità della mediazione. Quello che possiamo conoscere in generale sul negoziato nel mondo antico - lessico, modalità pratiche, aspetto normativo, risvolti legali - ha importanza in quanto giova a illustrare le forme e i compiti di un'istituzione pubblica e privata diffusa, ma al tempo stesso consente di individuarne i caratteri nel testo poetico, drammatico, retorico o politico nel quale se ne parla. In conformità con questi criteri, nell'insieme dei saggi qui raccolti si possono individuare un nucleo tematico principale che comprende i lavori che muovono da uno o più testi e li rapportano alla prassi propria della mediazione nell'ambito della vita sociale, politica, religiosa, familiare; un secondo orientamento, più propriamente narrativo/comunicativo, che riguarda il comportamento dell''autore'di teatro che mette in atto una mediazione tra le attese del pubblico, la tradizione mitica e l'esigenza del racconto. Da ultimo, alcuni esempi di come l'esame della documentazione storico/letteraria relativa alla mesotes (mese politeia; mediazione sacerdotale; intermediazione animale) possa essere utile per ricostruirne gli aspetti sociali, politici e religiosi nell'ambito della polis. 'Space and time'have been key concepts of investigation in the humanities in recent years. In the field of Classics in particular, they have led to the fresh appraisal of genres such as epic, historiography, the novel and biography, by enabling a close focus on how ancient texts invest their representations of space and time with a variety of symbolic and cultural meanings. This collection of essays by a team of international scholars seeks to make a contribution to this rich interdisciplinary field, by exploring how space and time are perceived, linguistically codified and portrayed in the biographical and philosophical work of Plutarch of Chaeronea (1st-2nd centuries CE). The volume's aim is to show how philological approaches, in conjunction with socio-cultural readings, can shed light on Plutarch's spatial terminology and clarify his conceptions of time, especially in terms of the ways in which he situates himself in his era's fascination with the past. The volume's intended readership includes Classicists, intellectual and cultural historians and scholars whose field of expertise embraces theoretical study of space and time, along with the linguistic strategies used to portray them in literary or historical texts.

The conference was focused on the identification and interpretation of sacred areas principally – but not exclusively – in the ancient Greek world and in the study of Greek religious ideas or religious practice. For example: what did ancient Greece, from the Mesolithic onwards, look like, if it is possible to identify sacred areas on a landscape scale, like ancient Delos or modern Mount Athos, and if the sacred landscapes were differing from the countryside. Another paper offered a new understanding of the role of astronomical observations in the Delphic and Spartan landscapes, the performance of the religious sites in the Spartan sanctuary of Artemis Orthia and the operation of the Delphic oracle. Most of the contributions were directly connected with the cult of Apollo and the history and tradition of the famous sanctuary of Delphi. A different paper examined the treatment of Apollo's journey from Delos to Delphi described in the Homeric Hymn to Apollo. According to a further contributor the network formed by connections between sanctuaries was looser than political federation, but helps to explain why panhellenic sanctuaries were so central to the articulation of Greek identity.

In antiquity, philosophical argumentation was often embedded in a literary form of presentation whose composition followed certain genre-determined rules. At the Third Congress of the Society for Ancient Philosophy, philologists and philosophers gave presentations about this point of intersection between philosophical argument and literary forms. This volume seeks to provide insight into the discussion as well as stimulate further thought.

This volume offers a range of innovative approaches to Solon of Athens, legendary law-giver, statesman, and poet of the early sixth century B.C. In the first part, Solon's poetry is reconsidered against the background of oral poetics and other early Greek poetry. The connection between Solon's alleged roles as poet and as politician is fundamentally questioned. Part two offers a reassessment of Solon's laws based on a revision of the textual tradition and recent views on early Greek lawgiving. In part three, fresh scrutiny of the archeological and written evidence of archaic Greece results in new perspectives on the agricultural crisis and Solon's role in the social and political developments of sixth-century Athens.Originally published in hardcover

In the past twenty years the study of Sparta has come of age. Images prevalent earlier in the 20th century, of Spartans as hearty good fellows or scarlet-cloaked automata, have been superseded by more complex scholarly reactions. As interest has grown in the self-images projected by this most secretive of Greek cities, increasing attention has focused on how individual Greek writers from other states reacted to information, or disinformation about Sparta.The studies in this volume provide new insights into the traditional historians'question,'What actually happened at Sparta?'. But the implications of the work go far beyond Laconia. They concern preoccupations of some of the most studied of Greek writers, and help towards an understanding of how Athenians defined the achievment, or the failure, of their own city.
