Abstract

This pilot study investigated legal and non-legal professionals’ decision process during a typical working day. During self-evaluated highly relevant decisions (rated through a daily diary), the two groups were asked to wear the MuseTM Headband to record their electrophysiological (EEG) activity in terms of frequency bands (delta, theta, alpha and beta). EEG cognitive findings displayed a generally increased beta power in the anterior frontal region (mainly in the right than left) for both groups during highly relevant decisions. Significantly results were also found for the legal professionals’ group, for which a decrease of alpha power was found in the left compared to right frontal cortex. Furthermore, a decreased alpha power and increased delta and theta power in the right compared to left Temporo-Parietal Junction was observed in the legal professionals when taking highly relevant decisions. This pilot study suggested a specific EEG pattern for legal professionals while taking highly relevant decisions.

Abstract

In this paper we study short exact sequences $ 0 \to \mathcal P \to \mathcal N \to \ii_D(k) \to 0 $ with $ \mathcal P, \mathcal N $ torsion--free sheaves and $ D $ closed projective scheme. This is a classical way to construct and study projective schemes (e.g. see \cite{hart-1974}, \cite{hart-2}, \cite{mdp}, \cite{serre-1960}). In particular, we give homological conditions on $ \mathcal P $ and $ \mathcal N $ that force $ D $ to be ACM, without constrains on its codimension. As last result, we prove that if $ \mathcal N $ is a higher syzygy sheaf of an ACM scheme $ X,$ the scheme $ D $ we get contains $ X.$

12. Shifting family boundaries when near and far. A spatial analysis of embodied family practices among young Italians

Abstract

In this paper we aim to investigate how family members, and young sons and daughters in particular, do family and actively take part in doing family through space and the body. By viewing family relations from a culturalist perspective, we aim to shed light on how these embodied family practices form, operate and change, from a spatial perspective. In more depth, we are interested in exploring how family boundaries change depending on the spatial proximity or distance among family members, configurations in which the (im)materiality of body and embodied family practices are significant. The paper is based on two empirical studies regarding young Italians – one on a group still living in the family home with their parent(s) and the other on a group of Italians living abroad. Our analysis, based on biographical narrative interviews with 40 young Italian men and women (aged 22 to 30), shows that while family boundaries are continuously being actively reshaped by (real and virtual) spatial interactions among family members, proximity and distance work quite similarly when it comes to doing family, especially considering the implications of, and reactions to, the parental gaze (Morgan 2011b).

Abstract

"To Appear in Theory and Practice of Logic Programming (TPLP)" This paper presents a technique for the optimization of bound queries over disjunctive deductive databases with constraints. The proposed approach is an extension of the well-known Magic-Set technique and is well-suited for being integrated in current bottom-up (stable) model inference engines. More specifically, it is based on the exploitation of binding propagation techniques which reduce the size of the data relevant to answer the query and, consequently, reduces both the complexity of computing a single model and the number of models to be considered. The motivation of this work stems from the observation that traditional binding propagation optimization techniques for bottom-up model generator systems, simulating the goal driven evaluation of top-down engines, are only suitable for positive (disjunctive) queries, while hard problems are expressed using unstratified negation. The main contribution of the paper consists in the extension of a previous technique, defined for positive disjunctive queries, to queries containing both disjunctive heads and constraints (a simple and expressive form of unstratified negation). As the usual way of expressing declaratively hard problems is based on the guess-and-check technique, where the guess part is expressed by means of disjunctive rules and the check part is expressed by means of constraints, the technique proposed here is highly relevant for the optimization of queries expressing hard problems. Abstract

Models of stand volume and biomass estimation based on LiDAR data for the main forest types in Calabria (southern Italy). The AlForLab project is part of the Cluster MEA (Materials Energy Environment) addressed to the Calabria Region. Estimating the main dendrometric variables of Calabrian forests using models based on publicly available remote sensed data is one of the main purposes of the project. This paper describes the procedures used to develop several thematic maps (raster and vector) of timber volume and phytomass to be used in planning and management activities at both regional and forest property scale, as well as for felling plans, logging projects etc. We used public LiDAR data at medium-low resolution (1.6 pts m-2), acquired on about 90% of Calabrian territory in the frame of a national remote sensing programme of the Italian Ministry of the Environment. Field data from the second National Forest Inventory (INFC 2005) on 311 sample points were used for model calibration, as well as new field data acquired specifically for AlForLab project on 143 angle count samples. A series of regression models to predict volume and its corresponding aboveground biomass (dry and fresh weight) were developed and digital maps at different spatial resolutions were produced, as well as their estimate uncertainties. These models and their mapping products are also an important part of the new-establishing forest Decision Support System CFOR. The adopted models, though based on the same mathematical equation, have specific coefficients for different species and groups of species, according to a forest type classification system compatible with the fourth level of Corine Land Cover. In this way it is possible to apply the models without accessing more detailed forest type maps. All estimation methods and procedures are consistent with national forest inventory models, and with the other new tools proposed by AlForLab project to estimate timber volume, such as the regional tariffs and the field sampling inventory procedures. R2 adjusted values (for models at the highest typological detail) are between 60% and 85%, whereas uncertainties of timber volume estimate (ESS%) range from 25% (for main forest species) up to 50% (for less spread forest types). All processing steps to produce digital maps were performed on open-source environment (R and QGIS).

Abstract

Background and Study Aim: The traditional endoscopic therapy of anastomotic strictures (AS) after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) is multiple ERCPs with the insertion of an increasing number of plastic stents side-by-side. Fully covered self-expanding metal stents (cSEMS) could be a valuable option to decrease the number of procedures needed or non-responders to plastic stents. This study aims to retrospectively analyse the results of AS endoscopic treatment by cSEMS and to identify any factors associated with its success. Patients and Methods: Ninety-one patients (mean age 55.9 ± 7.6 SD; 73 males) from nine Italian transplantation centres, had a cSEMS positioned for post-OLT-AS between 2007 and 2017. Forty-nine (54%) patients were treated with cSEMS as a second-line treatment. Results: All the procedures were successfully performed without immediate complications. After ERCP, adverse events occurred in 11% of cases (2 moderate pancreatitis and 8 cholangitis). In 49 patients (54%), cSEMSs migrated. After cSEMS removal, 46 patients (51%) needed further endoscopic (45 patients) or radiological (1 patient) treatments to solve the AS. Lastly, seven patients underwent surgery. Multivariable stepwise logistic regression showed that cSEMS migration was the only factor associated with further treatments (OR 2.6, 95% CI 1.0–6.6; p value 0.03); cSEMS implantation before 12 months from OLT was associated with stent migration (OR 5.2, 95% CI 1.7–16.0; p value 0.004). Conclusions: cSEMS appears to be a safe tool to treat AS. cSEMS migration is the main limitation to its routinary implantation and needs to be prevented, probably with the use of new generation anti-migration stents.

Abstract

Recently, the Society’s perception of forest resources has gone through significant changes. Forest ecosystems play a multifunctional role and host an important portion of the whole biodiversity, particularly in the Mediterranean area. Remote sensing technologies provide a unique way to obtain spatially extensive information on forest ecosystems, but relatively few studies used such information to evaluate forest habitat and biotic diversity. In this paper we evaluate the effectiveness of remote sensing to predict forest diversity by linking remotely sensed information with diversity metrics obtained from ground measurements of butterfly diversity. The field work was carried out in Calabria in four different forest types (beech, chestnut, black pine and silver fir forests). The sampling of Lepidoptera was carried out by LED light traps. We positioned 9 traps per forest type, for a total of 36 sites chosen to sample the different stages of forest succession in each forest type. Samples were carried out once a month from May to November 2015. Data from in situ butterfly measurements were compared with above ground forest biomass estimated from airborne LiDAR with NDVI estimated from Landsat 8. Results indicated that the Geometridae/Noctuideae ratio of lepidopteran communities was significantly correlated with the tree biomass, its distribution among tree size classes and the NDVI. The Geometridae/Noctuidae ratio, therefore, represents an index easy to calculate, which can be employed to integrate data acquired from remote sensing in order to obtain continuous spatial estimates of forest naturalness.

Abstract

The diversity in composition of moth communities living forest habitats is strongly related to habitat characteristics, depending mainly on dominant forest type. The species in a community have different behaviors and are more or less influenced by the surrounding landscape diversity. The effects of landscape diversity on moth communities are significant when the appropriate spatial scale is considered, which depends on the ecological needs and dispersion abilities of species. In this study we assessed the relationships between landscape diversity at different spatial scales in four different forest Calabrian scenarios, identified by using the CORINE Land Cover, and moth diversity. Nocturnal Lepidoptera were sampled in beech, chestnut, Calabrian black pine and fir forests by using LED light traps. In each forest type 9 traps were positioned, in a total of 36 sample plots selected by the maturity of forest. The diversity of Lepidoptera communities was related to landscape diversity, considering each sample plots as the center of the surrounding landscape analyzed with different buffers (500m, 1000m, 2000m, 3000m, and 5000m). Diversity moth-landscape correlations were performed for: (i) all 36 sample plots; (ii) only broadleaves forest sites; (iii) only conifers forest sites; (iv) only forested plots; (v) only non-forested plots. Our results suggest that landscape composition in forest ecosystems, both at small and medium spatial scale, have a driving role in determining moth communities diversity, pointing out that the landscape structure is a parameter to taking in account for the sustainable management of forests.

Abstract

Objective: Sepsis and septic shock are major challenges and economic burdens to healthcare, impacting millions of people globally and representing significant causes of mortality. Recently, a large number of quality improvement programs focused on sepsis resuscitation bundles have been instituted worldwide. These educational initiatives have been shown to be associated with improvements in clinical outcomes. We aimed to evaluate the impact of a multi-faceted quality implementing program (QIP) on the compliance of a “simplified 1-h bundle” (Sepsis 6) and hospital mortality of severe sepsis and septic shock patients out of the intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: Emergency departments (EDs) and medical wards (MWs) of 12 academic and non-academic hospitals in the Lombardy region (Northern Italy) were involved in a multi-faceted QIP, which included educational and organizational interventions. Patients with a clinical diagnosis of severe sepsis or septic shock according to the Sepsis-2 criteria were enrolled in two different periods: from May 2011 to November 2011 (before-QIP cohort) and from August 2012 to June 2013 (after-QIP cohort). Measurements and main results: The effect of QIP on bundle compliance and hospital mortality was evaluated in a before–after analysis. We enrolled 467 patients in the before-QIP group and 656 in the after-QIP group. At the time of enrollment, septic shock was diagnosed in 50% of patients, similarly between the two periods. In the after-QIP group, we observed increased compliance to the “simplified rapid (1 h) intervention bundle” (the Sepsis 6 bundle – S6) at three time-points evaluated (1 h, 13.7 to 18.7%, p = 0.018, 3 h, 37.1 to 48.0%, p = 0.013, overall study period, 46.2 to 57.9%, p < 0.001). We then analyzed compliance with S6 and hospital mortality in the before- and after-QIP periods, stratifying the two patients’ cohorts by admission characteristics. Abstract

Background A Covid-19 outbreak developed in Lombardy, Veneto and Emilia-Romagna (Italy) at the end of February 2020. Fear of an imminent saturation of available ICU beds generated the notion that rationing of intensive care resources could have been necessary. Results In order to evaluate the impact of Covid-19 on the ICU capacity to manage critically ill patients, we performed a retrospective analysis of the first 2 weeks of the outbreak (February 24–March 8). Data were collected from regional registries and from a case report form sent to participating sites. ICU beds increased from 1545 to 1989 (28.7%), and patients receiving respiratory support outside the ICU increased from 4 (0.6%) to 260 (37.0%). Patients receiving respiratory support outside the ICU were significantly older [65 vs. 77 years], had more cerebrovascular (5.8 vs. 13.1%) and renal (5.3 vs. 10.0%) comorbidities and less obesity (31.4 vs. 15.5%) than patients admitted to the ICU. PaO2/FiO2 ratio, respiratory rate and arterial pH were higher [165 vs. 244; 20 vs. 24 breath/min; 7.40 vs. 7.46] and PaCO2 and base excess were lower [34 vs. 42 mmHg; 0.60 vs. 1.30] in patients receiving respiratory support outside the ICU than in patients admitted to the ICU, respectively. Conclusions Increase in ICU beds and use of out-of-ICU respiratory support allowed effective management of the first 14 days of the Covid-19 outbreak, avoiding resource rationing.

Abstract

Reported theoretical analyses have not explained the variation with radius of the circumferential strength of bamboo. This study aims to analyze this issue using finite element analysis. A rectangular image representative of the culm cross section of Phyllostachys edulis was divided along the radial direction into ten parts. Next, ten FE rectangular models representing the fibers, matrix, and void content at each radial position were generated. The matrix and the fibers were assumed to be isotropic, having elastic moduli of 1800 MPa and 18000 MPa, respectively. The strength predicted with the fiber first principal stress is parabolic along the radial direction, consistent with experimental findings.
