Abstract

Laccases (EC 1.10.3.2) are multicopper oxidases with the capability to oxidize diverse phenolic and non-phenolic substrates. While the molecular mechanism of their activity towards phenolic substrates is well-established, their reactivity towards non-phenolic substrates, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), remains unclear. To elucidate the oxidation mechanism of PAHs, particularly the activation mechanism of the sp(2) aromatic C-H bond, we conducted a density functional theory investigation on the oxidation of two PAHs (anthracene and benzo[a]pyrene) using an extensive model of the T1 copper catalytic site of the fungal laccase from Trametes versicolor.

11. CO oxidation mechanism of silver‐substituted Mo/Cu CO‐dehydrogenase. Analogies and differences to the native enzyme

Abstract

The aerobic oxidation of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide is catalysed by the Mo/Cu-containing CO-dehydrogenase enzyme in the soil bacterium Oligotropha carboxidovorans, enabling the organism to grow on the small gas molecule as carbon and energy source. It was shown experimentally that silver can be substituted for copper in the active site of Mo/Cu CODH to yield a functional enzyme. In this study, we employed QM/MM calculations to investigate whether the reaction mechanism of the silver-substituted enzyme is similar to that of the native enzyme. Our results suggest that the Ag-substituted enzyme can oxidize CO and release CO2 following the same reaction steps as the native enzyme, with a computed rate-limiting step of 10.4 kcal/mol, consistent with experimental findings. Surprisingly, lower activation energies for C−O bond formation have been found in the presence of silver. Furthermore, comparison of rate constants for reduction of copper- and silver-containing enzymes suggests a discrepancy in the transition state stabilization upon silver substitution. We also evaluated the effects that differences in the water-active site interaction may exert on the overall energy profile of catalysis. Finally, the formation of a thiocarbonate intermediate along the catalytic pathway was found to be energetically unfavorable for the Ag-substituted enzyme. This finding aligns with the hypothesis proposed for the wild-type form, suggesting that the creation of such species may not be necessary for the enzymatic catalysis of CO oxidation.

14. Experimental syntax and the variation of island effects in English and Italian

Abstract

The goal of this article is to explore the utility of experimental syntax techniques in the investigation of syntactic variation. To that end, we applied the factorial definition of island effects made available by experimental syntax (e.g., Sprouse et al. 2012) to four island types (wh/whether, complex NP, subject, and adjunct), two dependency types (wh-interrogative clause dependencies and relative clause dependencies) and two languages (English and Italian). The results of 8 primary experiments suggest that there is indeed variation across dependency types, suggesting that wh-interrogative clause dependencies and relative clause dependencies cannot be identical at every level of analysis; however, the pattern of variation observed in these experiments is not exactly the pattern of variation previously reported in the literature (e.g., Rizzi 1982). We review six major syntactic approaches to the analysis of island effects (Subjacency, CED, Barriers, Relativized Minimality, Structure-building, and Phases) and discuss the implications of these results for these analyses. We also present 4 supplemental experiments testing complex wh-phrases (also called D-linked or lexically restricted wh-phrases) for all four island types using the factorial design in order to tease apart the contribution of dependency type from featural specification. The results of the supplemental experiments confirm that dependency type is the major source of variation, not featural specification, while providing a concrete quantification of what exactly the effect of complex wh-phrases on island effects is.

Abstract

Background: The Italian Society of Echocardiography and Cardiovascular Imaging (SIECVI) conducted a national survey to understand better how different echocardiographic modalities are used and accessed in Italy. Methods: We analyzed echocardiography laboratory activities over a month (November 2022). Data were retrieved via an electronic survey based on a structured questionnaire, uploaded on the SIECVI website. Results: Data were obtained from 228 echocardiographic laboratories: 112 centers (49%) in the northern, 43 centers (19%) in the central, and 73 (32%) in the southern regions. During the month of observation, we collected 101,050 transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) examinations performed in all centers. As concern other modalities there were performed 5497 transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) examinations in 161/228 centers (71%); 4057 stress echocardiography (SE) examinations in 179/228 centers (79%); and examinations with ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) in 151/228 centers (66%). We did not find significant regional variations between the different modalities. The usage of picture archiving and communication system (PACS) was significantly higher in the northern (84%) versus central (49%) and southern (45%) centers (P < 0.001). Lung ultrasound (LUS) was performed in 154 centers (66%), without difference between cardiology and noncardiology centers. The evaluation of left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction was evaluated mainly using the qualitative method in 223 centers (94%), occasionally with the Simpson method in 193 centers (85%), and with selective use of the three-dimensional (3D) method in only 23 centers (10%). 3D TTE was present in 137 centers (70%), and 3D TEE in all centers where TEE was done (71%). The assessment of LV diastolic function was done routinely in 80% of the centers. Abstract

We present a B, V color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the Milky Way dwarf satellite Ursa Major II (UMa II), spanning the magnitude range from V ~ 15 to V ~ 23.5 mag and extending over a 18 {\times} 18 arcmin2 area centered on the galaxy. Our photometry goes down to about 2 magnitudes below the galaxy's main sequence turn-off, that we detected at V ~ 21.5 mag. We have discovered a bona-fide RR Lyrae variable star in UMa II, which we use to estimate a conservative dereddened distance modulus for the galaxy of (m-M)0 = 17.70{\pm}0.04{\pm}0.12 mag, where the first error accounts for the uncertainties of the calibrated photometry, and the second reflects our lack of information on the metallicity of the star. The corresponding distance to UMa II is 34.7 {\pm} 0.6 ({\pm} 2.0) kpc. Our photometry shows evidence of a spread in the galaxy subgiant branch, compatible with a spread in metal abundance in the range between Z=0.0001 and Z=0.001. Based on our estimate of the distance, a comparison of the fiducial lines of the Galactic globular clusters (GCs) M68 and M5 ([Fe/H]=-2.27 {\pm} 0.04 dex and -1.33 {\pm} 0.02 dex, respectively), with the position on the CMD of spectroscopically confirmed galaxy members, may suggest the existence of stellar populations of different metal abundance/age in the central region of UMa II., Comment: To appear in ApJ

Abstract

We present B, V and I CCD light curves for 101 variable stars belonging to the globular cluster NGC2419, 60 of which are new discoveries, based on datasets obtained at the TNG, SUBARU and HST telescopes. The sample includes 75 RR Lyrae stars (of which 38 RRab, 36 RRc and one RRd), one Population II Cepheid, 12 SX Phoenicis variables, 2 DeltaScuti stars, 3 binary systems, 5 long-period variables, and 3 variables of uncertain classification. The pulsation properties of the RR Lyrae variables are close to those of Oosterhoff type II clusters, consistent with the low metal abundance and the cluster horizontal branch morphology,disfavoring (but not totally ruling out) an extragalactic hypotesis for the origin of NGC2419. The observed properties of RR Lyrae and SX Phoenicis stars are used to estimate the cluster reddening and distance, using a number of different methods. Our final value is mo(NGC2419)=19.71+/-0.08mag (D= 87.5+/-3.3kpc), with E(B-V)=0.08+/-0.01mag, [Fe/H]=-2.1dex in the Zinn & West metallicity scale, and a value of Mv that sets mo(LMC)=18.52mag. Abstract

We present B, V, I time-series photometry of the Coma Berenices dwarf spheroidal galaxy, a faint Milky Way satellite, recently discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We have obtained V, B-V and V, V-I color-magnitude diagrams that reach V~23.0-23.2 mag showing the galaxy turnoff at V~21.7 mag, and have performed the first study of the variable star population of this new Milky Way companion. Two RR Lyrae stars (a fundamental-mode -RRab- and a first overtone -RRc- pulsator) and a short period variable with period P=0.12468 days were identified in the galaxy. The RRab star has a rather long period of P_ab=0.66971 days and is about 0.2 mag brighter than the RRc variable and other non-variable stars on the galaxy horizontal branch. In the period-amplitude diagram the RRab variable falls closer to the loci of Oosterhoff type-II systems and evolved fundamental-mode RR Lyrae stars in the Galactic globular cluster M3. The average apparent magnitude of the galaxy horizontal branch, =18.64+-0.04 mag, leads to a distance modulus for the Coma dSph mu_0=18.13+-0.08 mag, corresponding to a distance d=42^{+2}_{-1} kpc, by adopting a reddening E(B-V) = 0.045 +- 0.015 mag and a metallicity [Fe/H]=-2.53 +- 0.05 dex., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJL

Abstract

We report on the detection of variable stars in the Canes Venatici II (CVn II) dwarf spheroidal galaxy, a new satellite of the Milky Way recently discovered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We also present a V, B-V color-magnitude diagram that reaches V = 25.5 mag, showing the galaxy's main sequence turn off at V = 24.5 mag and revealing several candidate blue straggler stars. Two RR Lyrae stars have been identified within the half-light radius of CVn II,a fundamental-mode variable (RRab) with period P_ab = 0.743 days, and a first-overtone (RRc) RR Lyrae star with P_c = 0.358 days. The rather long periods of these variables along with their position on the period-amplitude diagram support an Oosterhoff type II classification for CVn II. The average apparent magnitude of the RR Lyrae stars, = 21.48 +/- 0.02 mag, is used to obtain a precision distance modulus of mu_0 = 21.02 +/- 0.06 mag and a corresponding distance of 160(+4,-5} kpc, for an adopted reddening E(B-V) = 0.015 mag., Comment: Submitted to ApJ Letters

We have carried out a new photometric study of the remote Galactic globular cluster NGC 2419, using proprietary and archive B,V,I time-series CCD photometry of the cluster, that allowed us to discover a large number of new variable stars and to obtain a new colour magnitude diagram that reaches V ~26 mag over a field of 50X43 square arcmin centered on NGC 2419. The new variables include 39 RR Lyrae and 11 SX Phoenicis stars. The pulsation properties of the new RR Lyrae stars confirm and strengthen the classification of NGC 2419 as an Oosterhoff type II cluster., Comment: 3 pages, 2 greyscale figures. Abstract

Variable stars have been identified for the first time in Fornax 4, the globular cluster located near the center of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. By applying the image subtraction technique to B,V time series photometry obtained with the MagIC camera of the 6.5-m Magellan/Clay telescope and with the wide field imager of the 4-m Blanco/CTIO telescope, we detected 27 RR Lyrae stars (22 fundamental mode, 3 first overtone, and 2 double-mode pulsators) in a 2.4'x2.4' area centered on Fornax 4. The average and minimum periods of the ab-type RR Lyrae stars, = 0.594 d and P(ab,min)=0.5191 d, respectively, as well as the revised position of the cluster in the horizontal branch type--metallicity plane, all consistently point to an Oosterhoff-intermediate status for the cluster, unlike what is seen for the vast majority of Galactic globular clusters, but in agreement with previous indications for the other globular clusters in Fornax. The average apparent magnitude of the RR Lyrae stars located within 30 arcsec from the cluster center is =21.43 +/- 0.03 mag (sigma=0.10 mag, average on 12 stars), leading to a true distance modulus of (m-M)o=20.64 +/- 0.09 mag or (m-M)o=20.53 +/- 0.09 mag, depending on whether a low ([Fe/H]=-2.0) or a moderately high ([Fe/H]=-1.5) metallicity is adopted., Comment: Apj, in press

Abstract

We present a new, deep (V ~ 26) study of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 2419 based on B,V,I time-series CCD photometry over about 10 years and extending beyond the cluster published tidal radius. We have identified 101 variable stars of which 60 are new discoveries, doubling the known RR Lyrae stars and including 12 SX Phoenicis stars. The average period of the RR Lyrae stars (=0.662 d, and =0.366 d, for fundamental-mode -RRab- and first-overtone pulsators, respectively), and the position in the period-amplitude diagram both confirm that NGC 2419 is an Oosterhoff II cluster. The average apparent magnitude of the RR Lyrae stars is =20.31 +/- 0.01 (sigma=0.06, 67 stars) and leads to the distance modulus (m-M)o=19.60 +/- 0.05. The Color-Magnitude Diagram, reaching about 2.6 mag below the cluster turn-off, does not show clear evidence of multiple stellar populations. Cluster stars are found until r~ 10.5', and possibly as far as r~15', suggesting that the literature tidal radius might be underestimated. No extra-tidal structures are clearly detected in the data. NGC 2419 has many blue stragglers and a well populated horizontal branch extending from the RR Lyrae stars down to an extremely blue tail ending with the "blue-hook", for the first time recognized in this cluster. The red giant branch is narrow ruling out significant metallicity spreads. Our results seem to disfavor the interpretation of NGC 2419 as either having an extragalactic origin or being the relict of a dwarf galaxy tidally disrupted by the Milky Way., Comment: ApJ Letters, in press

Abstract

We present $V,I$ light curves for 12 variable stars identified in the newly discovered satellite of the Milky Way in the Bootes constellation (Belokurov et al. 2006).Our sample includes 11 RR Lyrae stars (5 first overtone, 5 fundamental mode and 1 double mode pulsator),and one long period variable close to the galaxy red giant branch tip. The RR Lyrae stars trace very well the average $V$ luminosity of the galaxy horizontal branch, leading to a true distance modulus for the galaxy of $\mu_0$=19.11 $\pm$ 0.08 mag for an assumed metal abundance of [Fe/H]=-2.5 (Monoz et al. 2006), and for $E(B-V)$=0.02 mag. Average periods are =0.69 d and =0.37 d for {\it ab-} and {\it c-} type RR Lyrae stars, respectively, making of Bootes the second pure Oosterhoff type II (OoII) dSph after Ursa Minor. The location of the double mode RR Lyrae (RRd) in the Petersen diagram is consistent with RRd stars in OoII clusters, and corresponds to an intrinsic luminosity of $log L/logL\odot$=1.72 (for Z=10$^{-4}$ and M=0.80 M$\odot$) according to Bono et al. Abstract

We have used DOLORES at the TNG to obtain B,V time series photometry of NGC 2419, one of the most distant and bright clusters in the Galactic halo. These data will be used to study its variable star population in order to check whether the cluster could be the relic of an extragalactic system accreted by the Milky Way. Using the Image Subtraction technique (Alard 2000) we have identified about 300 candidate variables, many of which are in the cluster central regions. Several of the variables appear to be RR Lyrae stars, but we detected variability also around the tip of the red giant branch, and in other regions of the colour-magnitude diagram. To improve the light curve sampling and to resolve variables in the cluster inner regions, the TNG data were combined with HST archive data. We present the first results of a variable star search in the field and in the globular clusters of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We briefly review our photometric and spectroscopic study of RR Lyrae variable stars in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), that allowed us to reconcile the so-called "short" and "long" distance moduli of the LMC on the value mod_LMC=18.51 +/- 0.085 mag. Then we present preliminary results from the photometric study of a 33' x 34' area in the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy containing the stellar clusters Fornax 3 (NGC 1049) and 6. Abstract

Sodium chloride (NaCl) represents the principal component of atmospheric particulates of marine origin. To gain a molecular-level understanding of the adsorption process of water vapor on the NaCl surface, Monte Carlo simulations performed in the Grand Canonical ensemble were carried out, considering the water adsorption at different water pressures on a NaCl(001) surface. The calculated adsorption isotherm shows four different regions, whose coverages correspond to those of the low-, transition-, high-, and pre-solution-coverage regions experimentally observed. Detailed analysis reveals how the structure of the adsorbed water molecules (islands, layer, and multi-layer) changes depending on water pressure, and how their orientation with respect to the surface varies with the distance from the surface. This detailed information further supports the picture coming from previous experimental IR absorption spectroscopy studies.

Abstract

Nitrogen gas is a highly inert molecule and its activation under mild conditions represents a crucial goal in current research. In a recent study, the discovery of low-valence Ca(i) compounds capable of coordinating and reducing N2 was reported [B. Rösch, T. X. Gentner, J. Langer, C. Färber, J. Eyselein, L. Zhao, C. Ding, G. Frenking and S. Harder, Science, 2021, 371, 1125]. The study of low-valence alkaline earth complexes represents a new horizon in inorganic chemistry and demonstrates examples of spectacular reactivity. For example, complexes of the [BDI]2Mg2 type are selective reducing reagents in both organic and inorganic synthesis reactions. To date, however, no activity of Mg(i) complexes in the activation of the nitrogen molecule has been reported. By computational studies, in the present work, we investigated the analogies and differences of low-valence Ca(i) and Mg(i) complexes in the coordination, activation and protonation of N2. We have shown that the possibility of alkaline earth metals to employ atomic orbitals of the d type is reflected in the differences in the N2 binding energy and its coordination mode (end-on vs. side-on), as well as in the spin state of the resulting adduct (singlet vs. triplet). These divergences are finally observed in the subsequent protonation reaction, which turned out to be prohibitive in the presence of Mg.

Abstract

Molecular modeling techniques have become indispensable in many fields of molecular sciences in which the details related to mechanisms and reactivity need to be studied at an atomistic level. This review article provides a collection of computational modeling works on a topic of enormous interest and urgent relevance: the properties of metalloenzymes involved in the degradation and valorization of natural biopolymers and synthetic plastics on the basis of both circular biofuel production and bioremediation strategies. In particular, we will focus on lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase, laccases, and various heme peroxidases involved in the processing of polysaccharides, lignins, rubbers, and some synthetic polymers. Special attention will be dedicated to the interaction between these enzymes and their substrate studied at different levels of theory, starting from classical molecular docking and molecular dynamics techniques up to techniques based on quantum chemistry.
