We present the most comprehensive and deepest X-ray study to date of the properties of the richest Wolf-Rayet (WR) population observed in a single stellar cluster, Westerlund 1 (Wd1). This work is based on 36 Chandra observations obtained from the "Extended Westerlund 1 and 2 Open Clusters Survey" (EWOCS) project, plus 8 archival Chandra observations. The overall exposure depth (~1.1 Ms) and baseline of the EWOCS observations extending over more than one year enable us to perform a detailed photometric, colour, and spectral analysis, as well as to search for short- and long-term periodicity. In X-rays, we detect 20 out of the 24 known Wolf-Rayet stars in Wd1 down to an observed luminosity of ~7$\times10^{29}$erg s$^{-1}$ (assuming a distance of 4.23 kpc to Wd1), with 8 WR stars being detected in X-rays for the first time. Nine stars show clear evidence of variability over the year-long baseline, with clear signs of periodicity. The X-ray colours and spectral analysis reveal that the vast majority of the WR stars are hard X-ray sources (kT$\geq$2.0keV). The Fe XXV emission line at ~6.7 keV, which commonly originates from the wind-wind collision zone in binary systems, is detected for the first time in the spectra of 17 WR stars in Wd1. In addition the ~6.4 keV fluorescent line is observed in the spectra of three stars, indicating that dense cold material coexists with the hot gas in these systems. Overall, our X-ray results alone suggest a very high binary fraction ($\geq$80%) for the WR star population in Wd1. When combining our results with properties of the WR population from other wavelengths, we estimate a binary fraction of $\geq$92%, which could even reach unity. Context. With a mass exceeding several 10^4 solar masses and a rich and dense population of massive stars, supermassive young star clusters represent the most massive star-forming environment that is dominated by the feedback from massive stars and gravitational interactions among stars. Aims. In this paper we present the "Extended Westerlund 1 and 2 Open Clusters Survey" (EWOCS) project, which aims to investigate the influence of the starburst environment on the formation of stars and planets, and on the evolution of both low and high mass stars. The primary targets of this project are Westerlund 1 and 2, the closest supermassive star clusters to the Sun. Methods. The project is based primarily on recent observations conducted with the Chandra and JWST observatories. Specifically, the Chandra survey of Westerlund 1 consists of 36 new ACIS-I observations, nearly co-pointed, for a total exposure time of 1 Msec. Additionally, we included 8 archival Chandra/ACIS-S observations. This paper presents the resulting catalog of X-ray sources within and around Westerlund 1. Sources were detected by combining various existing methods, and photon extraction and source validation were carried out using the ACIS-Extract software. Results. The EWOCS X-ray catalog comprises 5963 validated sources out of the 9420 initially provided to ACIS-Extract, reaching a photon flux threshold of approximately 2x10^-8 photons/cm^2/s. The X-ray sources exhibit a highly concentrated spatial distribution, with 1075 sources located within the central 1 arcminute. We have successfully detected X-ray emissions from 126 out of the 166 known massive stars of the cluster, and we have collected over 71000 photons from the magnetar CXO J164710.20-455217, Comment: The paper has been accepted for publication by Astronomy and Astrophysics

The technique of line depth ratios (LDR) is one of the methods to determine the effective temperature of a star. They are crucial in the spectroscopic studies of variable stars like Cepheids since no simultaneous photometry is usually available. A good number of LDR-temperature relations are already available in the optical domain, here we want to expand the number of relations available in the near-infrared in order to fully exploit the capabilities of current and upcoming near-infrared spectrographs. We used 115 simultaneous spectroscopic observations in the optical and the near-infrared for six Cepheids and optical line depth ratios to find new pairs of lines sensitive to temperature and to calibrate LDR-temperature relations in the near-infrared spectral range. We have derived 87 temperature calibrations valid in the [4800-6500] K range of temperatures. The typical uncertainty for a given relation is 60-70 K, and combining many of them provides a final precision within 30-50 K. We found a discrepancy between temperatures derived from optical or near-infrared LDR for pulsations phases close to phi ~ 0.0 and we discuss the possible causes for these differences. Line depth ratios in the near-infrared will allow us to spectroscopically investigate highly reddened Cepheids in the Galactic centre or in the far side of the disk., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables. The ionising radiation of young and massive stars is a crucial form of stellar feedback. Most ionising (Lyman-continuum; LyC, $\lambda < 912A$) photons are absorbed close to the stars that produce them, forming compact HII regions, but some escape into the wider galaxy. Quantifying the fraction of LyC photons that escape is an open problem. In this work, we present a semi-novel method to estimate the escape fraction by combining broadband photometry of star clusters from the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey (LEGUS) with HII regions observed by the Star formation, Ionized gas, and Nebular Abundances Legacy Survey (SIGNALS) in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 628. We first assess the completeness of the combined catalogue, and find that 49\% of HII regions lack corresponding star clusters as a result of a difference in the sensitivities of the LEGUS and SIGNALS surveys. For HII regions that do have matching clusters, we infer the escape fraction from the difference between the ionising power required to produce the observed HII luminosity and the predicted ionising photon output of their host star clusters; the latter is computed using a combination of LEGUS photometric observations and a stochastic stellar population synthesis code SLUG (Stochastically Lighting Up Galaxies). Overall, we find an escape fraction of $f_{esc} = 0.09^{+0.06}_{-0.06}$ across our sample of 42 HII regions; in particular, we find HII regions with high $f_{esc}$ are predominantly regions with low H$\alpha$-luminosity. Mapping the Galactic spiral structure is a difficult task since the Sun is located in the Galactic plane and because of dust extinction. For these reasons, molecular masers in radio wavelengths have been used with great success to trace the Milky Way spiral arms. Recently, Gaia parallaxes have helped in investigating the spiral structure in the Solar extended neighborhood. In this paper, we propose to determine the location of the spiral arms using Cepheids since they are bright, young supergiants with accurate distances (they are the first ladder of the extragalactic distance scale). They can be observed at very large distances; therefore, we need to take the Galactic warp into account. Thanks to updated mid-infrared photometry and to the most complete catalog of Galactic Cepheids, we derived the parameters of the warp using a robust regression method. Using a clustering algorithm, we identified groups of Cepheids after having corrected their Galactocentric distances from the (small) effects of the warp. We derived new parameters for the Galactic warp, and we show that the warp cannot be responsible for the increased dispersion of abundance gradients in the outer disk reported in previous studies. We show that Cepheids can be used to trace spiral arms, even at large distances from the Sun. The groups we identify are consistent with previous studies explicitly deriving the position of spiral arms using young tracers (masers, OB(A) stars) or mapping overdensities of upper main-sequence stars in the Solar neighborhood thanks to Gaia data., Comment: Accepted in A&A

The Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey is an ambitious project designed to obtain astrophysical parameters and elemental abundances for 100,000 stars, including large representative samples of the stellar populations in the Galaxy, and a well-defined sample of 60 (plus 20 archive) open clusters. We provide internally consistent results calibrated on benchmark stars and star clusters, extending across a very wide range of abundances and ages. This provides a legacy data set of intrinsic value, and equally a large wide-ranging dataset that is of value for homogenisation of other and future stellar surveys and Gaia's astrophysical parameters. This article provides an overview of the survey methodology, the scientific aims, and the implementation, including a description of the data processing for the GIRAFFE spectra. A companion paper (arXiv:2206.02901) introduces the survey results. Gaia-ESO aspires to quantify both random and systematic contributions to measurement uncertainties. Thus all available spectroscopic analysis techniques are utilised, each spectrum being analysed by up to several different analysis pipelines, with considerable effort being made to homogenise and calibrate the resulting parameters. We describe here the sequence of activities up to delivery of processed data products to the ESO Science Archive Facility for open use. The Gaia-ESO Survey obtained 202,000 spectra of 115,000 stars using 340 allocated VLT nights between December 2011 and January 2018 from GIRAFFE and UVES. The full consistently reduced final data set of spectra was released through the ESO Science Archive Facility in late 2020, with the full astrophysical parameters sets following in 2022., Comment: 38 pages. We present Hubble Space Telescope WFC3/UVIS (F275W, F336W) and ACS/WFC optical (F435W, F555W, and F814W) observations of the nearby grand-design spiral galaxy M101 as part of the Legacy Extragalactic UV Survey (LEGUS). Compact sources detected in at least four bands were classified by both human experts and the convolutional neural network StarcNet. Human experts classified the 2,351 brightest sources, retrieving $N_{c} = 965$ star clusters. StarcNet, trained on LEGUS data not including M101, classified all 4,725 sources detected in four bands, retrieving $N_{c} = 2,270$ star clusters. The combined catalog represents the most complete census to date of compact star clusters in M101. We find that for the 2,351 sources with both a visual- and ML-classification StarcNet is able to reproduce the human classifications at high levels of accuracy ($\sim 80-90\%$), which is equivalent to the level of agreement between human classifiers in LEGUS. The derived cluster age distribution implies a disruption rate of $dN/d\tau \propto \tau^{-0.45 \pm 0.14}$ over $10^{7} < \tau < 10^{8.5}$yr for cluster masses $\geq 10^{3.55} M_{\odot}$ for the central region of M101 and $dN/d\tau \propto \tau^{-0.02 \pm 0.15}$ for cluster masses $\geq 10^{3.38} M_{\odot}$ in the northwest region of the galaxy. The trends we recover are weaker than those of other nearby spirals (e.g. M51) and starbursts, consistent with the M101 environment having a lower-density interstellar medium, and providing evidence in favor of environmentally-dependent cluster disruption in the central, southeast, and northwest regions of M101., Comment: 24 pages, 18 figures, 3 tables. In the last 15 years different ground-based spectroscopic surveys have been started (and completed) with the general aim of delivering stellar parameters and elemental abundances for large samples of Galactic stars, complementing Gaia astrometry. Among those surveys, the Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey (GES), the only one performed on a 8m class telescope, was designed to target 100,000 stars using FLAMES on the ESO VLT (both Giraffe and UVES spectrographs), covering all the Milky Way populations, with a special focus on open star clusters. This article provides an overview of the survey implementation (observations, data quality, analysis and its success, data products, and releases), of the open cluster survey, of the science results and potential, and of the survey legacy. A companion article (Gilmore et al.) reviews the overall survey motivation, strategy, Giraffe pipeline data reduction, organisation, and workflow. The GES has determined homogeneous good-quality radial velocities and stellar parameters for a large fraction of its more than 110,000 unique target stars. Elemental abundances were derived for up to 31 elements for targets observed with UVES. Lithium abundances are delivered for about 1/3 of the sample. The analysis and homogenisation strategies have proven to be successful; several science topics have been addressed by the Gaia-ESO consortium and the community, with many highlight results achieved. The final catalogue has been released through the ESO archive at the end of May 2022, including the complete set of advanced data products. We report the discovery of high velocity candidates among RR~Lyrae stars found in the Milky Way halo. We identified 9 RR~Lyrae stars with Galactocentric velocities exceeding the local escape velocity based on the assumed Galaxy potential. Based on close examination of their orbits', we ruled out their ejection location in the Milky Way disk and bulge. The spatial distribution revealed that seven out of 9 pulsators overlap with the position of the Sagittarius stellar stream. Two out of these seven RR~Lyrae stars can be tentatively linked to the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy on the basis of their orbits. Focusing on the high-velocity tail of the RR~Lyrae velocity distribution we estimate the escape velocity in the Solar neighborhood to be $v_{\rm esc}=512^{+94}_{-37}$\,km\,s$^{-1}$~($4$ to $12$\,kpc), and beyond the Solar neighborhood as $v_{\rm esc}=436^{+44}_{-22}$\,km\,s$^{-1}$~and $v_{\rm esc}=393^{+53}_{-26}$\,km\,s$^{-1}$~(for distances between $12$ to $20$\,kpc and $20$ to $28$\,kpc), respectively. We utilized three escape velocity estimates together with the local circular velocity to estimate the Milky Way mass. The resulting measurement $M_{\rm 200}=0.83^{+0.29}_{-0.16} \cdot 10^{12}$\,M$_{\odot}$ falls on the lower end of the current Milky Way mass estimates, but once corrected for the likely bias in the escape velocity (approximately $10$ percent increase of the escape velocity), our mass estimate yields $M_{\rm 200}=1.26^{+0.40}_{-0.22} \cdot 10^{12}$\,M$_{\odot}$, which is in agreement with estimates based on different diagnostics of the Milky Way mass. The MW mass within $20$\,kpc then corresponds to $M_{\rm MW} \left(r < 20\,\text{kpc} \right)=1.9^{+0.2}_{-0.1} \times 10^{11}$\,M$_{\odot}$ without correction for bias, and $M_{\rm MW} \left(r < 20\,\text{kpc} \right)=2.1^{+0.2}_{-0.1} \times 10^{11}$\,M$_{\odot}$ corrected for a likely offset in escape velocities., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We aim to analyze the chemical evolution of the Small Magellanic Cloud adding 12 additional clusters to our existing sample having accurate and homogeneously derived metallicities. We are particularly interested in seeing if there is any correlation between age and metallicity for the different structural components to which the clusters belong. Spectroscopic metallicities of red giant stars are derived from the measurement of the equivalent width of the near-IR calcium triplet lines. Cluster membership analysis was carried out using criteria that include radial velocities, metallicities, proper motions and distance from the cluster center. The mean cluster radial velocity and metallicity were determined with a typical error of 2.1 km/s and 0.03 dex, respectively. We added this information to that available in the literature for other clusters studied with the same method, compiling a final sample of 48 clusters with metallicities homogeneously determined. Clusters of the final sample are distributed in an area of ~ 70 deg^2 and cover an age range from 0.4 Gyr to 10.5 Gyr. The metallicity distribution of our new cluster sample shows a lower probability of being bimodal than suggested in previous studies. The separate chemical analysis of clusters in the six components (Main Body, Counter-Bridge, West Halo, Wing/Bridge, Northern Bridge and Southern Bridge) shows that only clusters belonging to the Northern Bridge appear to trace a V-Shape, showing a clear inversion of the metallicity gradient in the outer regions. There is a suggestion of a metallicity gradient in the West Halo, similar to that previously found for field stars. It presents, however, a very large uncertainty. Also, clusters belonging to the West Halo, Wing/Bridge and Southern Bridge exhibit a well-defined age-metallicity relation with relatively little scatter in abundance at fixed age compared to other regions., Comment: 16 pages, 18 figures,Accepted for publication in A&A

Radial abundance gradients provide sound constraints for chemo-dynamical models of galaxies. Azimuthal variations of abundance ratios are solid diagnostics to understand their chemical enrichment. In this paper we investigate azimuthal variations of abundances in the Milky Way using Cepheids. We provide the detailed chemical composition (25 elements) of 105 Classical Cepheids from high-resolution SALT spectra observed by the MAGIC project. Negative abundance gradients, with abundances decreasing from the inner to the outer disc, have been reported both in the Milky Way and in external galaxies, and our results are in full agreement with literature results. We find azimuthal variations of the oxygen abundance [O/H]. While a large number of external spirals show negligible azimuthal variations, the Milky Way seems to be one of the few galaxies with noticeable [O/H] azimuthal asymmetries. They reach ~0.2 dex in the inner Galaxy and in the outer disc, where they are the largest, thus supporting similar findings for nearby spiral galaxies as well as recent 2D chemo-dynamical models., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We derived surface brightness profiles in the \emph{g} band for 170 Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) star clusters (SCs) mainly located in the central region of the galaxy. We provide a set of homogeneous structural parameters obtained by fitting Elson, Fall \& Freeman (EFF) and King models. Through a careful analysis of their colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) we also supply the ages for a subsample of 134 SCs. For the first time, such a large sample of SCs in the SMC is homogeneously characterized in terms of their sizes, luminosities and masses, widening the probed region of the parameter space, down to hundreds of solar masses. We used these data to explore the evolution of the SC's structural parameters with time. In particular, we confirm the existence of a physical mechanism that induces an increase of the core radius after 0.3-1.0 Gyr. We suggest that cluster mass could be the main parameter driving the inner expansion, as none of the SCs having $\log (M/M_{\odot}) \leq 3.5$~dex analysed in this work undergoes to such an expansion. We also detected a mass-size relationship almost over the entire range of SCs masses investigated here. We discuss the largest and most homogeneous spectroscopic dataset of field RR Lyrae variables (RRLs) available to date. We estimated abundances using both high-resolution and low-resolution ({\Delta S} method) spectra for fundamental (RRab) and first overtone (RRc) RRLs. The iron abundances for 7,941 RRLs were supplemented with similar literature estimates available, ending up with 9,015 RRLs (6,150 RRab, 2,865 RRc). The metallicity distribution shows a mean value of <[Fe/H]> = -1.51\pm0.01, and {\sigma}(standard deviation)= 0.41 dex with a long metal-poor tail approaching [Fe/H] = -3 and a sharp metal-rich tail approaching solar iron abundance. The RRab variables are more metal-rich (<[Fe/H]>ab = -1.48\pm0.01, {\sigma} = 0.41 dex) than RRc variables (<[Fe/H]>c = -1.58\pm0.01, {\sigma} = 0.40 dex). The relative fraction of RRab variables in the Bailey diagram (visual amplitude vs period) located along the short-period (more metal-rich) and the long-period (more metal-poor) sequences are 80% and 20\%, while RRc variables display an opposite trend, namely 30\% and 70\%. We found that the pulsation period of both RRab and RRc variables steadily decreases when moving from the metal-poor to the metal-rich regime. The visual amplitude shows the same trend, but RRc amplitudes are almost two times more sensitive than RRab amplitudes to metallicity. We also investigated the dependence of the population ratio (Nc/Ntot) of field RRLs on the metallicity and we found that the distribution is more complex than in globular clusters. The population ratio steadily increases from ~0.25 to ~0.36 in the metal-poor regime, it decreases from ~0.36 to ~0.18 for -1.8 < [Fe/H] < -0.9 and it increases to a value of ~0.3 approaching solar iron abundance., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables. We present a chemo-dynamical study of the Orphan stellar stream using a catalog of RR~Lyrae pulsating variable stars for which photometric, astrometric, and spectroscopic data are available. Employing low-resolution spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we determined line-of-sight velocities for individual exposures and derived the systemic velocities of the RR~Lyrae stars. In combination with the stars' spectroscopic metallicities and \textit{Gaia} EDR3 astrometry, we investigated the northern part of the Orphan stream. In our probabilistic approach, we found 20 single mode RR~Lyrae variables likely associated with the Orphan stream based on their positions, proper motions, and distances. The acquired sample permitted us to expand our search to nonvariable stars in the SDSS dataset, utilizing line-of-sight velocities determined by the SDSS. We found 54 additional nonvariable stars linked to the Orphan stream. The metallicity distribution for the identified red giant branch stars and blue horizontal branch stars is, on average, $-2.13\pm0.05$ dex and $-1.87\pm0.14$ dex, with dispersions of 0.23 and 0.43dex, respectively. The metallicity distribution of the RR~Lyrae variables peaks at $-1.80\pm0.06$ dex and a dispersion of 0.25dex. Using the collected stellar sample, we investigated a possible link between the ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Grus II and the Orphan stream. Based on their kinematics, we found that both the stream RR~Lyrae and Grus II are on a prograde orbit with similar orbital properties, although the large uncertainties on the dynamical properties render an unambiguous claim of connection difficult. At the same time, the chemical analysis strongly weakens the connection between both. We argue that Grus II in combination with the Orphan stream would have to exhibit a strong inverse metallicity gradient, which to date has not been detected in any Local Group system., Comment: 22 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A, final version

The stellar mass assembly of galaxies can be affected by both secular and environmental processes. In this study, for the first time, we investigate the stellar mass assembly of $\sim90,000$ low redshift, central galaxies selected from SDSS group catalogues (M$_{\rm Stellar}\gtrsim10^{9.5}$M$_{\odot}$, M$_{\rm Halo}\gtrsim10^{12}$M$_{\odot}$) as a function of both stellar and halo mass. We use estimates of the times at which 10, 50 and 90 per cent of the stellar mass was assembled from photometric spectral energy distribution fitting, allowing a more complete investigation than single stellar ages alone. We consider trends in both stellar and halo mass simultaneously, finding dependencies of all assembly times on both. We find that galaxies with higher stellar masses (at constant halo mass) have on average older lookback times, similar to previous studies of galaxy assembly. We also find that galaxies at higher halo mass (at constant stellar mass) have younger lookback times, possibly due to a larger reservoir of gas for star formation. An exception to this is a sub sample with high stellar-to-halo mass ratios, which are likely massive, field spirals. We compare these observed trends to those predicted by the TNG300 simulation, finding good agreement overall as a function of either stellar or halo mass. However, some differences in the assembly times (of up to $\sim 3$ Gyr) appear when considering both stellar and halo mass simultaneously, noticeably at intermediate stellar masses (M$_{\rm Stellar} \sim 10^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$). Context: The effective temperature is a key parameter governing the properties of a star. For stellar chemistry, it has the strongest impact on the accuracy of the abundances derived. Since Cepheids are pulsating stars, determining their effective temperature is more complicated that in the case of non-variable stars. Aims: We want to provide a new temperature scale for classical Cepheids, with a high precision and full control of the systematics. Methods: Using a data-driven machine learning technique employing observed spectra, and taking great care to accurately phase single-epoch observations, we have tied flux ratios to (label) temperatures derived using the infrared surface brightness method. Results: We identified 143 flux ratios that allow us to determine the effective temperature with a precision of a few K and an accuracy better than 150 K, which is in line with the most accurate temperature measures available to date. The method does not require a normalization of the input spectra and provides homogeneous temperatures for low- and high-resolution spectra, even at the lowest signal-to-noise ratios. Due to the lack of a dataset of sufficient sample size for Small Magellanic Cloud Cepheids, the temperature scale does not extend to Cepheids with [Fe/H] < -0.6 dex but nevertheless provides an exquisite, homogeneous means of characterizing Galactic and Large Magellanic Cloud Cepheids. Conclusions: The temperature scale will be extremely useful in the context of spectroscopic surveys for Milky Way archaeology with the WEAVE and 4MOST spectrographs. It paves the way for highly accurate and precise metallicity estimates, which will allow us to assess the possible metallicity dependence of Cepheids' period-luminosity relations and, in turn, to improve our measurement of the Hubble constant H0., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted in A&A

We consider the circumnuclear regions of MaNGA galaxies. The spectra are classified as AGN-like, HII-region-like (or SF-like), and intermediate (INT) spectra according to their positions on the BPT diagram. There are the following four configurations of the radiation distributions in the circumnuclear regions: 1) AGN+INT, the innermost region of the AGN-like radiation is surrounded by a ring of radiation of the intermediate type; 2) INT, the central area of radiation of the intermediate type; 3) SF+INT, the inner region of the HII-region-like radiation is surrounded by a ring of radiation of the intermediate type; and 4) SF, the HII-region-like radiation only. The LINERS of configurations 1 and 2 are examined. The spaxel spectra of the LINERs form a sequences on the BPT diagram. The line ratios change smoothly with radius, from AGN-like at the center to HII-region-like at larger distances. This is in agreement with the paradigm that the LINERs are excited by AGN activity. The AGN and INT radiation in the circumnuclear region is accompanied by an enhanced gas velocity dispersion, s_g. The radius of the area of the AGN and INT radiation is similar to the radius of the area with enhanced s_g, and the central s_g,c correlates with the luminosity of the AGN+INT area. We assume that the gas velocity dispersion can serve as an indicator of the AGN activity. The values of s_g,c for the SF-type centers partly overlap with those of the AGN-type centers. Using the star cluster catalogs from the Hubble Space Telescope program Legacy ExtraGalactic UV survey (LEGUS) and 8 $\mu$m images from the IRAC camera on the Spitzer Space Telescope for 5 galaxies within 5 Mpc, we investigate how the 8 $\mu$m dust luminosity correlates with the stellar age on the 30--50 pc scale of star forming regions. We construct a sample of 97 regions centered at local peaks of 8 $\mu$m emission, each containing one or more young star cluster candidates from the LEGUS catalogs. We find a tight anti-correlation with a Pearson correlation coefficient of $r=-0.84\pm0.05$ between the mass-normalized dust-only 8 $\mu$m luminosity and the age of stellar clusters younger than 1 Gyr; the 8 $\mu$m luminosity decreases with increasing age of the stellar population. Simple assumptions on a combination of stellar and dust emission models reproduce the observed trend. We also explore how the scatter of the observed trend depends on assumptions of stellar metallicity, PAH abundance, fraction of stellar light absorbed by dust, and instantaneous versus continuous star formation models. We find that variations in stellar metallicity have little effect on the scatter, while PAH abundance and the fraction of dust-absorbed light bracket the full range of the data. We also find that the trend is better explained by continuous star formation, rather than instantaneous burst models. We ascribe this result to the presence of multiple star clusters with different ages in many of the regions. In the context of large spectroscopic surveys of stars, data-driven methods are key in deducing physical parameters for millions of spectra in a short time. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) enable us to connect observables (e.g. spectra, stellar magnitudes) to physical properties (atmospheric parameters, chemical abundances, or labels in general). We trained a CNN, adopting stellar atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances from APOGEE DR16 (resolution R=22500) data as training set labels. As input, we used parts of the intermediate-resolution RAVE DR6 spectra (R~7500) overlapping with the APOGEE DR16 data as well as broad-band ALL_WISE and 2MASS photometry, together with Gaia DR2 photometry and parallaxes. We derived precise atmospheric parameters Teff, log(g), and [M/H] along with the chemical abundances of [Fe/H], [alpha/M], [Mg/Fe], [Si/Fe], [Al/Fe], and [Ni/Fe] for 420165 RAVE spectra. The precision typically amounts to 60K in Teff, 0.06 in log(g) and 0.02-0.04 dex for individual chemical abundances. Incorporating photometry and astrometry as additional constraints substantially improves the results in terms of the accuracy and precision of the derived labels. We provide a catalogue of CNN-trained atmospheric parameters and abundances along with their uncertainties for 420165 stars in the RAVE survey. CNN-based methods provide a powerful way to combine spectroscopic, photometric, and astrometric data without the need to apply any priors in the form of stellar evolutionary models. The developed procedure can extend the scientific output of RAVE spectra beyond DR6 to ongoing and planned surveys such as Gaia RVS, 4MOST, and WEAVE. We present the most extended and homogeneous study carried out so far of the main and early shocks in 1485 RR~Lyrae stars in the Galactic bulge observed by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE). We selected non-modulated fundamental-mode RR~Lyrae stars with good-quality photometry. Using a self-developed method, we determined the centers and strengths of main and early shock features in the phased light curves. We found that the position of both humps and bumps are highly correlated with the pulsation properties of the studied variables. Pulsators with a pronounced main shock are concentrated in the low-amplitude regime of the period-amplitude diagram, while stars with a strong early shock have average and above-average pulsation amplitudes. A connection between the main and early shocks and the Fourier coefficients is also observed. In the color-magnitude diagram (CMD), we see a separation between stars with strong and weak shocks. Variables with a pronounced main shock cluster close to the fundamental red edge of the instability strip (IS), while stars with a strong early shock tend to clump in the center and near the fundamental blue edge of the IS. The appearance of shocks and their properties seem independent of the direction of evolution estimated from the period change rate of the studied stars. In addition, the differences in the period change rate between the two main Oosterhoff groups found in the Galactic bulge suggest that stars of Oosterhoff type I are located close to the zero-age horizontal branch while Oosterhoff type II variables are on their way toward the fundamental red edge of the instability strip, thus having already left the zero-age horizontal branch., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

We present a kinematical study of 314 RR~Lyrae stars in the solar neighbourhood using the publicly available photometric, spectroscopic, and {\it Gaia} DR2 astrometric data to explore their distribution in the Milky Way. We report an overdensity of 22 RR~Lyrae stars in the solar neighbourhood at a pericenter distance of between 5--9\,kpc from the Galactic center. Their orbital parameters and their chemistry indicate that these 22 variables share the kinematics and the [Fe/H] values of the Galactic disc, with an average metallicity and tangential velocity of [Fe/H]=$-0.60$\,dex and $v_{\theta} = 241$\,km\,s$^{-1}$, respectively. From the distribution of the Galactocentric spherical velocity components, we find that these 22 disc-like RR~Lyrae variables are not consistent with the {\it Gaia} Sausage ({\it Gaia}-Enceladus), unlike almost half of the local RR~Lyrae stars. Chemical information from the literature shows that the majority of the selected pericenter peak RR~Lyrae variables are $\alpha$-poor, a property shared by typically much younger stars in the thin disc. Using the available photometry we rule out a possible misclassification with the known classical and anomalous Cepheids. The similar kinematic, chemical, and pulsation properties of these disc RR~Lyrae stars suggest they share a common origin. In contrast, we find the RR~Lyrae stars associated with the {\it Gaia}-Enceladus based on their kinematics and chemical composition show a considerable metallicity spread in the old population ($\sim$~1\,dex)., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS, final version

We derive the photometric, kinematic, and abundance characteristics of 18 star-forming MaNGA galaxies with fairly regular velocity fields and surface brightness distributions and with a large offset between the measured position angles of the major kinematic and photometric axes, dPA > 20 degree. The aim is to examine if there is any other distinctive characteristic common to these galaxies. We found morphological signs of interaction in some (in 11 out of 18) but not in all galaxies. The observed velocity fields show a large variety; the maps of the isovelocities vary from an hourglass-like appearance to a set of straight lines. The position angles of the major kinematic axes of the stellar and gas rotations are close to each other. The values of the central oxygen abundance, radial abundance gradient, and star formation rate are distributed within the intervals defined by galaxies with small (no) dPA of similar mass. Thus, we do not find any specific characteristic common to all galaxies with large dPA. Instead, the properties of these galaxies are similar to those of galaxies with small (no) dPA. This suggests that either the reason responsible for the large dPA does not influence other characteristics or the galaxies with large dPA do not share a common origin, they can, instead, originate through different channels., Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We derive the recent star formation histories of 23 active dwarf galaxies using HST observations from the Legacy Extragalactic UV Survey (LEGUS). We apply a color-magnitude diagram fitting technique using two independent sets of stellar models, PARSEC-COLIBRI and MIST. Despite the non-negligible recent activity, none of the 23 star forming dwarfs show enhancements in the last 100 Myr larger than three times the 100-Myr-average. The unweighted mean of the individual SFHs in the last 100 Myr is also consistent with a rather constant activity, irrespective of the atomic gas fraction. We confirm previous results that for dwarf galaxies the CMD-based average star formation rates (SFRs) are generally higher than the FUV-based SFR. For half of the sample, the 60-Myr-average CMD-based SFR is more than two times the FUV SFR. In contrast, we find remarkable agreement between the 10-Myr-average CMD-based SFR and the H${\alpha}$-based SFR. Finally, using core helium burning stars of intermediate mass we study the pattern of star formation spatial progression over the past 60 Myr, and speculate on the possible triggers and connections of the star formation activity with the environment in which these galaxies live. The morphology of HII regions around young star clusters provides insight into the timescales and physical processes that clear a cluster's natal gas. We study ~700 young clusters (<10Myr) in three nearby spiral galaxies (NGC 7793, NGC 4395, and NGC 1313) using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging from LEGUS (Legacy ExtraGalactic Ultraviolet Survey). Clusters are classified by their H$\alpha$ morphology (concentrated, partially exposed, no-emission) and whether they have neighboring clusters (which could affect the clearing timescales). Through visual inspection of the HST images, and analysis of ages, reddenings, and stellar masses from spectral energy distributions fitting, together with the (U-B), (V-I) colors, we find: 1) the median ages indicate a progression from concentrated (~3 Myr), to partially exposed (~4 Myr), to no H$\alpha$ emission (>5Myr), consistent with the expected temporal evolution of HII regions and previous results. However, 2) similarities in the age distributions for clusters with concentrated and partially exposed H$\alpha$ morphologies imply a short timescale for gas clearing (<1Myr). 3) our cluster sample's median mass is ~1000 M, and a significant fraction (~20%) contain one or more bright red sources (presumably supergiants), which can mimic reddening effects. Finally, 4) the median E(B-V) values for clusters with concentrated H$\alpha$ and those without H$\alpha$ emission appear to be more similar than expected (~0.18 vs. ~0.14, respectively), but when accounting for stochastic effects, clusters without H$\alpha$ emission are less reddened. To mitigate stochastic effects, we experiment with synthesizing more massive clusters by stacking fluxes of clusters within each H$\alpha$ morphological class. We present results from a joint ALMA-HST study of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 628. We combine the HST LEGUS database of over 1000 stellar clusters in NGC 628 with ALMA Cycle 4 millimeter/submillimeter observations of the cold dust continuum that span ~15 square kpc including the nuclear region and western portions of the galaxy's disk. The resolution -- 1.1" or approximately 50 pc at the distance of NGC 628 -- allows us to constrain the spatial variations in the slope of the millimeter dust continuum as a function of the ages and masses of the nearby stellar clusters. Our results indicate an excess of dust emission in the millimeter assuming a typical cold dust model for a normal star-forming galaxy, but little correlation of the dust continuum slope with stellar cluster age or mass. For the depth and spatial coverage of these observations, we cannot substantiate the millimeter/submillimeter excess arising from the processing of dust grains by the local interstellar radiation field. We detect a bright unknown source in NGC 628 in ALMA bands 4 and 7 with no counterparts at other wavelengths from ancillary data. We report the discovery of a spiral-like nebula with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and the results of optical spectroscopy of its associated star TYC 8606-2025-1 with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). We find that TYC 8606-2025-1 is a G8 III star of $\approx3$ M$_\odot$, showing a carbon depletion by a factor of two and a nitrogen enhancement by a factor of three. We also derived an excess of s-process elements, most strongly for barium, which is a factor of three overabundant, indicating that TYC 8606-2025-1 is a mild barium star. We thereby add a new member to the small group of barium stars with circumstellar nebulae. Our radial velocity measurements indicate that TYC 8606-2025-1 has an unseen binary companion. The advanced evolutionary stage of TYC 8606-2025-1, together with the presence of a circumstellar nebula, implies an initial mass of the companion of also about 3 M$_\odot$. We conclude that the infrared nebula, due to its spiral shape, and because it has no optical counterpart, was ejected by the companion as a consequence of a very late thermal pulse, during about one orbital rotation., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We derive the circular velocity curves of the gaseous and stellar discs of UGC 4056, a giant barred galaxy with an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We analyse UGC 4056 using the 2D spectroscopy obtained within the framework of the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey. Using images and the colour index g-r from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we determined the tilt of the galaxy, which allows us to conclude that the galaxy rotates clockwise with trailing spiral arms. We found that the gas motion at the central part of the UGC 4056 shows peculiar features. The rotation velocity of the gaseous disc shows a bump within around three kiloparsecs while the rotation velocity of the stellar disc falls smoothly to zero with decreasing galactocentric distance. We demonstrate that the peculiar radial velocities in the central part of the galaxy may be caused by the inflow of the gas towards the nucleus of the galaxy. We present a kinematical study of RR~Lyrae stars associated with two Oosterhoff groups in the Galactic bulge. We used data published in the first paper of the series, plus proper motions from the {\it Gaia} Data Release 2, and radial velocities from the literature. A 6D kinematical and spatial solution was obtained for 429 RR~Lyrae stars. We use a model of the Galactic gravitational potential to infer stellar orbits. We did not find a difference between the Oosterhoff groups in the individual components of the space velocity. We report that \textit{foreground} and \textit{background} stars with respect to the Galactic bulge stand out in the mean $V$ velocity component, which we interpret as a sign of the Galactic rotation. The movement of the studied stars in the central region of the Galactic bulge is consistent with random motions expected for a classical bulge component. From the orbital integration, we estimate that 8\,\% of the RR~Lyrae stars are halo interlopers currently located in the Galactic bulge. The majority of the stars' orbits are within a 3\,kpc radius from the Galactic bulge. The fraction of Oosterhoff\,II stars increases with increasing Galactic latitude, as well as towards longer orbital periods. We found several RR~Lyrae stars with high space velocities, one of which has an extremely long orbital period of $\sim$1\,Gyr. We conclude that based on their kinematics, the vast majority of the stars in our sample do not seem to contribute to the boxy/peanut component of the Galactic bulge., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present 20 newly discovered candidates for binary systems with an RR~Lyrae companion. Using the photometric data from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) and Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) for the Galactic bulge, we searched for binary candidates among non-modulated fundamental-mode RR~Lyrae variables. We constructed and investigated over 9000 $O-C$ diagrams for individual pulsators, in order to find signs of the light-travel time effect. We found 20 variables exhibiting cyclic variation in the $O-C$ (time of the observed minus calculated brightness maximum) diagram, which can be associated with a second component in the system, but for confirmation of binarity, a long-term radial velocity study is necessary. The modeling of the $O-C$ diagrams yields orbital parameters, estimates of the semi-amplitude of the radial velocity curve, and the mass function. The orbital periods of our candidates range from 3 to 15 years. Two of the binary candidates display a minimum mass higher than the assumed mass of the RR~Lyrae component, which points towards an evolved companion that can under some circumstances contribute significantly to the total light of the system., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph) orbiting the Milky Way are complex objects often with complicated star formation histories and internal dynamics. In this work, we search for stellar substructures in four of the classical dSph satellites of the Milky Way: Sextans, Carina, Leo I, and Leo II. We apply two methods to search for stellar substructure: the minimum spanning tree method, which helps us to find and quantify spatially connected structures, and the "brute-force" method, which is able to find elongated stellar substructures. We detected the previously known substructure in Sextans, and also found a new stellar substructure within Sextans. Furthermore, we identified a new stellar substructure close to the core radius of the Carina dwarf galaxy. We report a detection of one substructure in Leo I and two in Leo II, but we note that we are dealing with a low number of stars in the samples used. Such old stellar substructures in dSph galaxies could help us to shed light on the nature of the dark matter halos, within which such structures form, evolve, and survive., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 13 pages, 6 figures

The goal of this survey is to study the formation and evolution of the Milky Way halo to deduce its assembly history and the 3D distribution of mass in the Milky Way. The combination of multi-band photometry, Gaia proper motion and parallax data, and radial velocities and the metallicity and elemental abundances obtained from low-resolution spectra of halo giants with 4MOST, will yield an unprecedented characterisation of the Milky Way halo and its interface with the thick disc. The survey will produce a volume- and magnitude-limited complete sample of giant stars in the halo. The One Thousand and One Magellanic Fields (1001MC) survey aims to measure the kinematics and elemental abundances of many different stellar populations that sample the history of formation and interaction of the Magellanic Clouds. We introduce the 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope (4MOST), a new high-multiplex, wide-field spectroscopic survey facility under development for the four-metre-class Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) at Paranal. Its key specifications are: a large field of view (FoV) of 4.2 square degrees and a high multiplex capability, with 1624 fibres feeding two low-resolution spectrographs ($R = \lambda/\Delta\lambda \sim 6500$), and 812 fibres transferring light to the high-resolution spectrograph ($R \sim 20\,000$). After a description of the instrument and its expected performance, a short overview is given of its operational scheme and planned 4MOST Consortium science; these aspects are covered in more detail in other articles in this edition of The Messenger. The mechanisms of the formation and evolution of the Milky Way are encoded in the orbits, chemistry and ages of its stars. With the 4MOST MIlky way Disk And BuLgE Low-Resolution Survey (4MIDABLE-LR) we aim to study kinematic and chemical substructures in the Milky Way disc and bulge region with samples of unprecedented size out to larger distances and greater precision than conceivable with Gaia alone or any other ongoing or planned survey. Gaia gives us the unique opportunity for target selection based almost entirely on parallax and magnitude range, hence increasing the efficiency in sampling larger Milky Way volumes with well-defined and effective selection functions. Our main goal is to provide a detailed chrono-chemo-kinematical extended map of our Galaxy and the largest Gaia follow-up down to $G = 19$ magnitudes (Vega). We will study the formation history of the Milky Way, and the earliest phases of its chemical enrichment, with a sample of more than 1.5 million stars at high galactic latitude. Elemental abundances of up to 20 elements with a precision of better than 0.2 dex will be derived for these stars. The sample will include members of kinematically coherent substructures, which we will associate with their possible birthplaces by means of their abundance signatures and kinematics, allowing us to test models of galaxy formation. Our target catalogue is also expected to contain 30,000 stars at a metallicity of less than one hundredth that of the Sun. We present the star cluster catalogs for 17 dwarf and irregular galaxies in the $HST$ Treasury Program "Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey" (LEGUS). Cluster identification and photometry in this subsample are similar to that of the entire LEGUS sample, but special methods were developed to provide robust catalogs with accurate fluxes due to low cluster statistics. The colors and ages are largely consistent for two widely used aperture corrections, but a significant fraction of the clusters are more compact than the average training cluster. However, the ensemble luminosity, mass, and age distributions are consistent suggesting that the systematics between the two methods are less than the random errors. When compared with the clusters from previous dwarf galaxy samples, we find that the LEGUS catalogs are more complete and provide more accurate total fluxes. Combining all clusters into a composite dwarf galaxy, we find that the luminosity and mass functions can be described by a power law with the canonical index of $-2$ independent of age and global SFR binning. The age distribution declines as a power law, with an index of $\approx-0.80\pm0.15$, independent of cluster mass and global SFR binning. This decline of clusters is dominated by cluster disruption since the combined star formation histories and integrated-light SFRs are both approximately constant over the last few hundred Myr. Finally, we find little evidence for an upper-mass cutoff ($<2\sigma$) in the composite cluster mass function, and can rule out a truncation mass below $\approx10^{4.5}$M$_{\odot}$ but cannot rule out the existence of a truncation at higher masses., Comment: 25 pages; 28 figures (Accepted to MNRAS)

We derive rotation curves, surface brightness profiles, and oxygen abundance distributions for 147 late-type galaxies using the publicly available spectroscopy obtained by the MaNGA survey. Changes of the central oxygen abundance (O/H)_0, the abundance at the optical radius (O/H)_R25, and the abundance gradient with rotation velocity V_rot are examined for galaxies with rotation velocities from 90 km/s to 350 km/s. We found that each relation shows a break at V_rot^* ~200 km/s. The central (O/H)_0 abundance increases with rising V_rot and the slope of the (O/H)_0 - V_rot relation is steeper for galaxies with V_rot < V_rot^*. The mean scatter of the central abundances around this relation is 0.053 dex. The relation between the abundance at the optical radius of a galaxy and its rotation velocity is similar; the mean scatter in abundances around this relation is 0.081 dex. The radial abundance gradient expressed in dex/kpc flattens with the increase of the rotation velocity. The slope of the relation is very low for galaxies with V_rot > V_rot^*. The abundance gradient expressed in dex/R25 is rougly constant for galaxies with V_rot < V_rot^*, flattens towards V_rot^*, and then again is roughly constant for galaxies with V_rot > V_rot^*. The change of the gradient expressed in terms of dex/h_d (where h_d is the disc scale length) with rotation velocity is similar to that for gradient in dex/R25. We present a study of the Oosterhoff (Oo) dichotomy in the Galactic bulge using 8\,141 fundamental mode RR~Lyrae stars. We used public photometric data from the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) and the Vista Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea survey (VVV). We carefully selected fundamental mode stars without modulation and without association with any globular cluster located toward the Galactic bulge. Subsequently, we identified and separated the Oosterhoff groups I and II on the basis of their period-amplitude distribution and using a relation fitted to the Oosterhoff I locus. Both Oosterhoff groups were then compared to observations of two bulge globular clusters and with models of stellar pulsation and evolution. We found that some of the variables classified as Oo\,II belong to a third Oo group. The Oosterhoff II variables are more metal-poor on average, more massive, and cooler than their Oosterhoff I counterparts. The analysis of their spatial distribution shows a systematic difference between \textit{foreground}, central and \textit{background} regions in the occurrence of the Oosterhoff II group. The difference between the Oo\,I and II groups is also seen in their distance distributions with respect to the Galactic bar, but neither group is associated with the bar., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures. We present a study correlating the spatial locations of young star clusters with those of molecular clouds in NGC~5194, in order to investigate the timescale over which clusters separate from their birth clouds. The star cluster catalogues are from the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey (LEGUS) and the molecular clouds from the Plateau de Bure Interefrometer Arcsecond Whirpool Survey (PAWS). We find that younger star clusters are spatially closer to molecular clouds than older star clusters. The median ages for clusters associated with clouds is 4~Myr whereas it is 50~Myr for clusters that are sufficiently separated from a molecular cloud to be considered unassociated. After $\sim$6~Myr, the majority of the star clusters lose association with their molecular gas. Younger star clusters are also preferentially located in stellar spiral arms where they are hierarchically distributed in kpc-size regions for 50-100~Myr before dispersing. The youngest star clusters are more strongly clustered, yielding a two-point correlation function with $\alpha=-0.28\pm0.04$, than the GMCs ($\alpha=-0.09\pm0.03$) within the same PAWS field. However, the clustering strength of the most massive GMCs, supposedly the progenitors of the young clusters for a star formation efficiency of a few percent, is comparable ($\alpha=-0.35\pm0.05$) to that of the clusters. We find a galactocentric-dependence for the coherence of star formation, in which clusters located in the inner region of the galaxy reside in smaller star-forming complexes and display more homogeneous distributions than clusters further from the centre. We report the discovery of two mid-infrared nebulae in the northern hemisphere with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer and the results of optical spectroscopy of their central stars, BD+60 2668 (composed of two components, separated from each other by \approx 3 arcsec) and ALS 19653, with the Calar Alto 3.5-m telescope and the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), respectively. We classify the components of BD+60 2668 as stars of spectral types B0.5 II and B1.5 III. ALS 19653 is indicated in the SIMBAD data base as a planetary nebula, while our observations show that it is a massive B0.5 Ib star, possibly in a binary system. Using the stellar atmosphere code FASTWIND, we derived fundamental parameters of the three stars as well as their surface element abundances, implying that all of them are either on the main sequence or only recently left it. This provides further evidence that massive stars can produce circumstellar nebulae while they are still relatively unevolved. We also report the detection of optical counterparts to the mid-infrared nebulae and a second, more extended optical nebula around ALS 19653, and present the results of SALT spectroscopy of both nebulae associated with this star. We test the performance of the semi-analytic self-consistent Just-Jahrei{\ss} disc model (JJ model) with the astrometric data from the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS) sub-catalogue of the first Gaia data release (Gaia DR1), as well as the radial velocities from the fifth data release of the Radial Velocity Experiment survey (RAVE DR5). We use a sample of 19,746 thin disc stars from the TGAS$\times$RAVE cross-match selected in the local solar cylinder of 300 pc radius and 1 kpc height below the Galactic plane and simulate this sample via the forward modelling technique. First, we convert the predicted vertical density laws of the thin disc populations into a mock sample. Then the obtained mock populations are reddened with a 3D dust map and are subjected to the selection criteria corresponding to the RAVE and TGAS observational limitations as well as to additional cuts applied to the data sample. We calculate the quantities of interest separately at different heights above the Galactic plane taking into account the distance error effects separately in horizontal and vertical directions. We investigate the simulated sample in terms of the vertical number density profiles, Hess diagrams and velocity distribution functions. Basing on a good agreement of our simulations with the data, we conclude that our fiducial disc model confidently reproduces the vertical trends in the thin disc stellar population properties. We present a study of a recently discovered stellar overdensity near the northern edge of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMCNOD). We exploited variable stars from the fourth release of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE). We used mainly pulsating variable stars and investigated their potential association with the SMCNOD using their spatial distribution and distances. We found four rather spatially concentrated anomalous Cepheids and eight evenly dispersed RR~Lyrae stars to be most likely members of this overdensity. The anomalous Cepheids inside the SMCNOD trace possible intermediate-age population with ages ranging between $2-4.5$ Gyr. The age distribution of anomalous Cepheids seems to be in a good agreement with the age distribution of anomalous Cepheids in the SMC. Using empirical relations for RR~Lyrae stars we determined the median metallicity for a possible old population in the SMCNOD to be $\rm [Fe/H]_{\rm SMCNOD}=-1.71\pm0.21$ dex, which is in agreement with median metallicity of the old SMC population. The density profile for anomalous Cepheids shows a small anomaly at the position of the SMCNOD, on the other hand, RR~Lyrae variables show no such deviation. The probability of finding the observed number of variable stars at the location of the SMCNOD by chance is very low for anomalous Cepheids (0.7 %) but high for RR~Lyrae stars (13.0 %). Based on its variable stars content, we thus confirm the presence of a modest overdensity in intermediate-age stars in the SMCNOD and conclude that it probably has its origin in the SMC rather than to be the remnant of an accreted dwarf galaxy., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures. We present an investigation of the relationship between giant molecular cloud (GMC) properties and the associated stellar clusters in the nearby flocculent galaxy NGC 7793. We combine the star cluster catalog from the HST LEGUS (Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey) program with the 15 parsec resolution ALMA CO(2-1) observations. We find a strong spatial correlation between young star clusters and GMCs such that all clusters still associated with a GMC are younger than 11 Myr and display a median age of 2 Myr. The age distribution increases gradually as the cluster-GMC distance increases, with star clusters that are spatially unassociated with molecular gas exhibiting a median age of 7 Myr. Thus, star clusters are able to emerge from their natal clouds long before the timescale required for clouds to disperse. To investigate if the hierarchy observed in the stellar components is inherited from the GMCs, we quantify the amount of clustering in the spatial distributions of the components and find that the star clusters have a fractal dimension slope of $-0.35 \pm 0.03$, significantly more clustered than the molecular cloud hierarchy with slope of $-0.18 \pm 0.04$ over the range 40-800 pc. We find, however, that the spatial clustering becomes comparable in strength for GMCs and star clusters with slopes of $-0.44\pm0.03$ and $-0.45\pm0.06$ respectively, when we compare massive ($>$10$^5$ M$_{\odot}$) GMCs to massive and young star clusters. This shows that massive star clusters trace the same hierarchy as their parent GMCs, under the assumption that the star formation efficiency is a few percent., Comment: 12 page, 8 figures. One of the main theories for explaining the formation of spiral arms in galaxies is the stationary density wave theory. This theory predicts the existence of an age gradient across the arms. We use the stellar cluster catalogues of the galaxies NGC 1566, M51a, and NGC 628 from the Legacy Extragalactic UV Survey (LEGUS) program. In order to test for the possible existence of an age sequence across the spiral arms, we quantified the azimuthal offset between star clusters of different ages in our target galaxies. We found that NGC 1566, a grand-design spiral galaxy with bisymmetric arms and a strong bar, shows a significant age gradient across the spiral arms that appears to be consistent with the prediction of the stationary density wave theory. In contrast, M51a with its two well-defined spiral arms and a weaker bar does not show an age gradient across the arms. In addition, a comparison with non LEGUS star cluster catalogues for M51a yields similar results. We believe that the spiral structure of M51a is not the result of a stationary density wave with a fixed pattern speed. Instead, tidal interactions could be the dominant mechanism for the formation of spiral arms. We also found no offset in the azimuthal distribution of star clusters with different ages across the weak spiral arms of NGC 628.

We present a new Galaxy population synthesis Model (GalMod). GalMod is a star-count model featuring an asymmetric bar/bulge as well as spiral arms and related extinction. The model, initially introduced in Pasetto et al. (2016b), has been here completed with a central bar, a new bulge description, new disk vertical profiles and several new bolometric corrections. The model can generate synthetic mock catalogs of visible portions of the Milky Way (MW), external galaxies like M31, or N-body simulation initial conditions. At any given time, e.g., a chosen age of the Galaxy, the model contains a sum of discrete stellar populations, namely bulge/bar, disk, halo. These populations are in turn the sum of different components: the disk is the sum of spiral arms, thin disks, a thick disk, and various gas components, while the halo is the sum of a stellar component, a hot coronal gas, and a dark matter component. The Galactic potential is computed from these population density profiles and used to generate detailed kinematics by considering up to the first four moments of the collisionless Boltzmann equation. The same density profiles are then used to define the observed color-magnitude diagrams in a user-defined field of view from an arbitrary solar location. Several photometric systems have been included and made available on-line and no limits on the size of the field of view are imposed thus allowing full sky simulations, too. Finally, we model the extinction adopting a dust model with advanced ray-tracing solutions. Before the publication of the Gaia DR2 we confirmed with RAVE and TGAS an observation recently made with the GALAH survey by Quillen ey al. concerning the Coma Berenices moving group in the Solar neighbourhood, namely that it is only present at negative Galactic latitudes. This allowed us to show that it is coherent in vertical velocity, providing a first evidence for incomplete vertical phase-mixing. We estimated for the first time from dynamical arguments that the moving group must have formed at most ~ 1.5 Gyr ago, and related this to a pericentric passage of the Sagittarius dwarf satellite galaxy. Investigating the chemical homogeneity of stars born from the same molecular cloud at virtually the same time is very important for our understanding of the chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium and with it the chemical evolution of the Galaxy. One major cause of inhomogeneities in the abundances of open clusters is stellar evolution of the cluster members. In this work, we investigate variations in the surface chemical composition of member stars of the old open cluster M67 as a possible consequence of atomic diffusion effects taking place during the main-sequence phase. The abundances used are obtained from high-resolution UVES/FLAMES spectra within the framework of the Gaia-ESO Survey. We find that the surface abundances of stars on the main sequence decrease with increasing mass reaching a minimum at the turn-off. After deepening of the convective envelope in sub-giant branch stars, the initial surface abundances are restored. We found the measured abundances to be consistent with the predictions of stellar evolutionary models for a cluster with the age and metallicity of M67. It has recently been established that the properties of young star clusters (YSCs) can vary as a function of the galactic environment in which they are found. We use the cluster catalogue produced by the Legacy Extragalactic UV Survey (LEGUS) collaboration to investigate cluster properties in the spiral galaxy M51. We analyse the cluster population as a function of galactocentric distance and in arm and inter-arm regions. The cluster mass function exhibits a similar shape at all radial bins, described by a power law with a slope close to $-2$ and an exponential truncation around $10^5\ \rm{M}_{\odot}$ . While the mass functions of the YSCs in the spiral arm and inter-arm regions have similar truncation masses, the inter-arm region mass function has a significantly steeper slope than the one in the arm region; a trend that is also observed in the giant molecular cloud mass function and predicted by simulations. The age distribution of clusters is dependent on the region considered, and is consistent with rapid disruption only in dense regions, while little disruption is observed at large galactocentric distances and in the inter-arm region. The fraction of stars forming in clusters does not show radial variations, despite the drop in the $H_2$ surface density measured as function of galactocentric distance. We suggest that the higher disruption rate observed in the inner part of the galaxy is likely at the origin of the observed flat cluster formation efficiency radial profile., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, 9 tables (+appendix: 6 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables). We present a new analysis of the LAMOST DR1 survey spectral database performed with the code SP_Ace, which provides the derived stellar parameters T$_{\rm eff}$, log (g), [Fe/H], and [$\alpha$/Fe] for 1,097,231 stellar objects. We tested the reliability of our results by comparing them to reference results from high spectral resolution surveys. The expected errors can be summarized as $\sim$120 K in T$_{\rm eff}$, $\sim$0.2 in log (g), $\sim$0.15 dex in [Fe/H], and $\sim$0.1 dex in [$\alpha$/Fe] for spectra with S/N$>$40, with some differences between dwarf and giant stars. SP_Ace provides error estimations consistent with the discrepancies observed between derived and reference parameters. Some systematic errors are identified and discussed.
