1. Cloudfridge: A Cloud-Based Control System for Commercial Refrigeration Systems

Abstract: In California, commercial refrigeration accounts for 14% of electric energy usage,corresponding to 9,014 GWh per year and affecting more than 110,000 commercialestablishments. A single walk-in freezer uses more energy than 5 single-family houses. Despitemore stringent standards and utility programs promoting hardware improvements, controlssystems used for commercial refrigerators are still primitive. In fact, in traditional refrigerators,the vapor-compression cycle is controlled with a simple hysteresis controller to keep the aircabinet temperature within a specific range. The controller does not account for systemdynamics, energy consumption, utility prices or recurrent events such as food loading schedulesand business opening hours. Also, demand response is precluded with these unsophisticatedcontrols. With the help advanced control theory and efficient optimization algorithms, computerbasedreal-time optimization is now feasible and applicable in commercial refrigeration systems,but its practical use to date has been limited to industrial systems requiring expensive on-premiseequipment and complex operations. This paper presents a novel hardware and softwarearchitecture that allows advanced control algorithms for commercial refrigerators to bedeveloped, tested and deployed inexpensively. The aim of this new control framework is tooptimize energy consumption as a software task, utilizing the benefits of lower costcomputational resources inherent to cloud computing, minimizing on net overall energy usage ofthe refrigeration system. A prototype of the proposed system has been developed and testedunder a California Energy Commission grant

Abstract: The effectiveness of marine protected areas (MPAs) and the conservation of marine environments must be based on reliable information on the quality of the marine environment that can be obtained in a reasonable timeframe. We reviewed studies that evaluated all aspects related to the effectiveness of MPAs in order to describe how the studies were conducted and to detect fields in which research is lacking. Existing parameters used to evaluate the effectiveness of MPAs are summarised. Two-hundred and twenty-two publications were reviewed. We identified the most commonly used study subjects and methodological approaches. Most of the studies concentrated on biological parameters. Peer reviewed studies were based on control vs. impact design. BACI and mBACI designs were used in very few studies. Through this review, we have identified gaps in the objectives assigned to MPAs and the way in which they have been evaluated. We suggest some guidelines aimedat improving the assessment of the effects of protection in MPAs.

Abstract: Background: The association between volume, complications and pathological outcomes is still under debate regarding colorectal cancer surgery. The aim of the study was to assess the association between centre volume and severe complications, mortality, less-than-radical oncologic surgery, and indications for neoadjuvant therapy. Methods: Retrospective analysis of 16,883 colorectal cancer cases from 80 centres (2018-2021). Outcomes: 30-day mortality; Clavien-Dindo grade >2 complications; removal of ≥ 12 lymph nodes; non-radical resection; neoadjuvant therapy. Quartiles of hospital volumes were classified as LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH, and VERY HIGH. Independent predictors, both overall and for rectal cancer, were evaluated using logistic regression including age, gender, AJCC stage and cancer site. Results: LOW-volume centres reported a higher rate of severe postoperative complications (OR 1.50, 95% c.i. 1.15-1.096, P = 0.003). The rate of ≥ 12 lymph nodes removed in LOW-volume (OR 0.68, 95% c.i. 0.56-0.85, P < 0.001) and MEDIUM-volume (OR 0.72, 95% c.i. 0.62-0.83, P < 0.001) centres was lower than in VERY HIGH-volume centres. Of the 4676 rectal cancer patients, the rate of ≥ 12 lymph nodes removed was lower in LOW-volume than in VERY HIGH-volume centres (OR 0.57, 95% c.i. 0.41-0.80, P = 0.001). A lower rate of neoadjuvant chemoradiation was associated with HIGH (OR 0.66, 95% c.i. 0.56-0.77, P < 0.001), MEDIUM (OR 0.75, 95% c.i. 0.60-0.92, P = 0.006), and LOW (OR 0.70, 95% c.i. 0.52-0.94, P = 0.019) volume centres (vs. VERY HIGH). Conclusion: Colorectal cancer surgery in low-volume centres is at higher risk of suboptimal management, poor postoperative outcomes, and less-than-adequate oncologic resections. Centralisation of rectal cancer cases should be taken into consideration to optimise the outcomes.

Abstract: Background: Italy has one of the world’s oldest populations, and suffered one the highest death tolls from Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) worldwide. Older people with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), and in particular hypertension, are at higher risk of hospitalization and death for COVID-19. Whether hypertensionmedicationsmay increase the risk for death in older COVID 19 inpatients at the highest risk for the disease is currently unknown. Methods: Data from 5,625 COVID-19 inpatients were manually extracted from medical charts from 61 hospitals across Italy. From the initial 5,625 patients, 3,179 were included in the study as they were either discharged or deceased at the time of the data analysis. Primary outcome was inpatient death or recovery. Mixed effects logistic regression models were adjusted for sex, age, and number of comorbidities, with a random effect for site. Results: A large proportion of participating inpatients were ≥65 years old (58%), male (68%), non-smokers (93%) with comorbidities (66%). Each additional comorbidity increased the risk of death by 35% [adjOR = 1.35 (1.2, 1.5) p < 0.001]. Use of ACE inhibitors, ARBs, beta-blockers or Ca-antagonists was not associated with significantly increased risk of death. There was a marginal negative association between ARB use and death, and a marginal positive association between diuretic use and death. Conclusions: This Italian nationwide observational study of COVID-19 inpatients, the majority of which ≥65 years old, indicates that there is a linear direct relationship between the number of comorbidities and the risk of death. Among CVDs, hypertension and pre-existing cardiomyopathy were significantly associated with risk of death. The use of hypertension medications reported to be safe in younger cohorts, do not contribute significantly to increased COVID-19 related deaths in an older population that suffered one of the highest death tolls worldwide.

22. Four-Dimensional Spatial Reasoning in Humans

Abstract: Human subjects practiced navigation in a virtual, computer-generated maze that contained 4 spatial dimensions rather than the usual 3. The subjects were able to learn the spatial geometry of the 4-dimensional maze as measured by their ability to perform path integration, a standard test of spatial ability. They were able to travel down a winding corridor to its end and then point back accurately toward the occluded origin. One interpretation is that the brain substrate for spatial navigation is not a built-in map of the 3-dimensional world. Instead it may be better described as a set of general rules for manipulating spatial information that can be applied with practice to a diversity of spatial frameworks.

Abstract: Background: Italy has one of the world’s oldest populations, and suffered one the highest death tolls from Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) worldwide. Older people with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), and in particular hypertension, are at higher risk of hospitalization and death for COVID-19. Whether hypertensionmedicationsmay increase the risk for death in older COVID 19 inpatients at the highest risk for the disease is currently unknown. Methods: Data from 5,625 COVID-19 inpatients were manually extracted from medical charts from 61 hospitals across Italy. From the initial 5,625 patients, 3,179 were included in the study as they were either discharged or deceased at the time of the data analysis. Primary outcome was inpatient death or recovery. Mixed effects logistic regression models were adjusted for sex, age, and number of comorbidities, with a random effect for site. Results: A large proportion of participating inpatients were ≥65 years old (58%), male (68%), non-smokers (93%) with comorbidities (66%). Each additional comorbidity increased the risk of death by 35% [adjOR = 1.35 (1.2, 1.5) p < 0.001]. Use of ACE inhibitors, ARBs, beta-blockers or Ca-antagonists was not associated with significantly increased risk of death. There was a marginal negative association between ARB use and death, and a marginal positive association between diuretic use and death. Conclusions: This Italian nationwide observational study of COVID-19 inpatients, the majority of which ≥65 years old, indicates that there is a linear direct relationship between the number of comorbidities and the risk of death. Among CVDs, hypertension and pre-existing cardiomyopathy were significantly associated with risk of death. The use of hypertension medications reported to be safe in younger cohorts, do not contribute significantly to increased COVID-19 related deaths in an older population that suffered one of the highest death tolls worldwide.

25. Cloudfridge: A Cloud-Based Control System for Commercial Refrigeration Systems

Abstract: In California, commercial refrigeration accounts for 14% of electric energy usage, corresponding to 9,014 GWh per year and affecting more than 110,000 commercial establishments. A single walk-in freezer uses more energy than 5 single-family houses. Despite more stringent standards and utility programs promoting hardware improvements, controls systems used for commercial refrigerators are still primitive. In fact, in traditional refrigerators, the vapor-compression cycle is controlled with a simple hysteresis controller to keep the air cabinet temperature within a specific range. The controller does not account for system dynamics, energy consumption, utility prices or recurrent events such as food loading schedules and business opening hours. Also, demand response is precluded with these unsophisticated controls. With the help advanced control theory and efficient optimization algorithms, computerbased real-time optimization is now feasible and applicable in commercial refrigeration systems, but its practical use to date has been limited to industrial systems requiring expensive on-premise equipment and complex operations. This paper presents a novel hardware and software architecture that allows advanced control algorithms for commercial refrigerators to be developed, tested and deployed inexpensively. The aim of this new control framework is to optimize energy consumption as a software task, utilizing the benefits of lower cost computational resources inherent to cloud computing, minimizing on net overall energy usage of the refrigeration system. Abstract: The exploitation of modular CubeSat as main platforms in high-performance Distributed Synthetic Aperture Radar (DSAR) systems can be a breakthrough for the future of small Earth Observation satellites. If on one side, the distribution of SAR payload among several co-flying platforms, as in Formation-Flying SAR system (FF-SAR), enables to obtain high SAR imaging capability, from the other side, the modularity, applied to CubeSat platforms, allows to significantly reduce the whole timeframes for the development and launch, that means low-cost and easier access to space. Therefore, the number of elements in the formation can be increased to have more acquisitions and improved performance. The goal of this work is twofold: to propose feasible solutions for the design of each modular subsystem, and to demonstrate that modular PnP CubeSat can operate as main platform in a FF-SAR mission. Indeed, the design is driven by both the need to make hardware and software components as more reusable as possible, in such a way to facilitate the readiness of using the same modules in different platform configurations for different mission scenarios, and to ensure typical spacecraft operations as well as FF-SAR applications. For example, the Attitude Determination Control Subsystem (ADCS) software has been abstracted from specific sensors and actuators to allow the user to change either the type of ADCS hard-ware and its mounting location with no (or few) required further modifications. By standardizing hardware interface and by decomposing the single integrated ADCS software block in different single software components, only the appropriate software modules can be easily selected, when reused, based on available sensors and actuators. At the same time, FF-SAR mission-related multiple pointing modes required for SAR operations, as well as attitude determination and control capabilities for the acquisition, reconfiguration and maintenance of the formation, must be ensured. To this end, a simulator developed in MATLAB/Simulink environment will be discussed in this paper to show the feasibility of this approach.

Abstract: The ARGO project brings forward an innovative concept in the field of Maritime Situational Awareness (MSA). Currently, the maritime traffic monitoring is mainly supported by the Automatic Identification System (AIS), a system in which medium and large ships (>300 tons) are equipped by a transponder transmitting vessels identification data and information about their route, enabling ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore data exchange within about 60 nautical miles from the coast. The AIS system is conceived on a collaborative approach: only the ships whose AIS transponder is turned on can be detected and monitored. Hence, non-collaborative vessels do not leave a trace in the AIS system. The ARGO project aims to improve the security of ships providing an effective understanding of maritime traffic, including also non-collaborative vessels. Currently, several space-based monitoring systems have been proposed and tested. All of them carry out the ship detection based on echoes in optical or radar images. This have strongly improved the MSA in the last decade, but such systems are useless to fight against illegal activities performed by go-fast boats. In fact, this kind of vessels, thanks to their design, materials and high speed, cannot be imaged in radar images and the illegal activities are typically performed during the night-time when optical sensors cannot provide data. However, thanks to their high velocity and narrow beam, these boats are likely to produce long visible wakes. Such wakes are very persistent, lasting for distances of several kilometers, and they can be observed in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. Hence, ARGO project will enable the space-based surveillance of seas under all weather and day-and-night conditions, overcoming the idea of the ship detection based on echoes in optical or radar images and exploiting the wake presence as an indirect signature of the ship presence. The unique capabilities of the proposed system make it suited for the detection of very fast ships, typically used for illegal affairs, strongly contributing to border security and passengersgoods safety.

Abstract: The paper investigates the capabilities of a formation flying SAR (FF-SAR) for Earth observation from space. FF-SAR is a versatile remote sensing concept which is aimed at replacing large and complex monolithic systems and satellites by multiple, very compact, units (e.g. CubeSats), flying in formation, that are able to achieve the same or even better performance. Moreover, FF-SAR enables new observation techniques that are not possible or not reliable by single-satellite monolithic missions. The paper presents some tools that can be used to support the selection of design parameters. The tools are applied to a specific realization of an FF-SAR in which a cluster of passive CubeSats is considered using a pre-existing SAR mission as an illuminator of opportunity.

Abstract: Increasing anthropogenic C[O.sub.2] emissions to the atmosphere are causing a rise in pC[O.sub.2] concentrations in the ocean surface and lowering pH. To predict the effects of these changes, we need to improve our understanding of the responses of marine primary producers since these drive biogeochemical cycles and profoundly affect the structure and function of benthic habitats. The effects of increasing C[O.sub.2] levels on the colonisation of artificial substrata by microalgal assemblages (periphyton) were examined across a C[O.sub.2] gradient off the volcanic island of Vulcano (NE Sicily). We show that periphyton communities altered significantly as C[O.sub.2] concentrations increased. C[O.sub.2] enrichment caused significant increases in chlorophyll a concentrations and in diatom abundance although we did not detect any changes in cyanobacteria. SEM analysis revealed major shifts in diatom assemblage composition as C[O.sub.2] levels increased. Abstract: The effects of climate change-induced ice melting on the microbial communities in different glacial-fed aquatic systems have been reported, but seasonal dynamics remain poorly inves-tigated. In this study, the structural and functional traits of the aquatic microbial community were assessed along with the hydrological and biogeochemical variation patterns of the Arctic Pasvik River under riverine and brackish conditions at the beginning (May = Ice-melt(-)) and during the ice-melting season (July = Ice-melt(+)). The microbial abundance and morphometric analysis showed a spatial diversification between the riverine and brackish stations. Results highlighted different levels of microbial respiration and activities with different carbon and phosphorous utilization pathways, thus suggesting an active biogeochemical cycling along the river especially at the beginning of the ice-melting period. At Ice-melt(-), Gammaproteobacteria and Alphaproteobacteria were dominant in riverine and brackish stations, respectively. Conversely at Ice-melt(+), the microbial community composition was more homogeneously distributed along the river (Gammaproteobacteria>Alphaproteobacteria> Bacteroidetes). Our findings provide evidence on how riverine microbial communities adapt and respond to seasonal ice melting in glacial-fed aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract: Obesity represents a major risk factor for metabolic disorders, but some individuals, “metabolically healthy” (MHO), show less clinical evidence of these complications, in contrast to “metabolically unhealthy” (MUO) individuals. The aim of this cross-sectional study is to assess the prevalence of the MHO phenotype in a cohort of 246 overweight/obese Italian children and adolescents, and to evaluate their characteristics and the role of insulin resistance. Homeostasis model assessment–insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), insulin sensitivity index (ISI), insulinogenic index (IGI) and disposition index (DI) were all calculated from the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT). MHO was defined by either: (1) HOMA-IR < 2.5 (MHO-IRes), or (2) absence of the criteria for metabolic syndrome (MHO-MetS). The MHO prevalence, according to MHO-MetS or MHO-IRes criteria, was 37.4% and 15.8%, respectively. ISI was the strongest predictor of the MHO phenotype, independently associated with both MHO-IRes and MHO-MetS. The MHO-MetS group was further subdivided into insulin sensitive or insulin resistant on the basis of HOMA-IR (either < or ≥ 2.5). Insulin sensitive MHO-MetS patients had a better metabolic profile compared to both insulin resistant MHO-MetS and MUO-MetS individuals. These data underscore the relevance of insulin sensitivity to identifying, among young individuals with overweight/obesity, the ones who have a more favorable metabolic phenotype.

Nel 2018 le indagini nel Caseggiato delle due scale (IV, ix, 6), un grande edificio a destinazione abitativa e commerciale sorto agli inizi del II sec. d.C., hanno condotto alla scoperta di un locale trasformato in mulino in epoca tardoantica. La ripresa delle ricerche nel 2019 ha permesso di raccogliere ulteriori dati sul funzionamento e sull’articolazione planimetrica dell’impianto produttivo, che è stato anche messo a confronto con altri impianti e macine simili rinvenuti in area ostiense e romana.

Abstract: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of senile dementia, accounting for up to 70% of dementia cases. AD is a slowly progressive disease, which causes global mental deterioration by affecting various cognitive areas. A growing body of evidence has demonstrated that lifestyle habits and nutritional patterns could delay the natural course of the neurodegeneration process. There is no single dietary pattern unequivocally proven to prevent AD. Nevertheless, epidemiological data suggest that by adopting several dietary habits, especially if accompanied with a healthy lifestyle, the negative consequences of AD could potentially be delayed. Alongside with others, two specific eating patterns have been well investigated concerning their potential beneficial effect on cognitive status: the Mediterranean diet (MedDi) and the Ketogenic Diet (KD). Despite the different underlying mechanisms, both of them have demonstrated a fairly profitable role in reducing or delaying cognitive impairment. The aim of the present narrative review is to overview the existing research on the efficacy of MedDi and KD against AD-related cognitive decline, focusing on the proposed protective mechanisms of action. Although the current knowledge on this complex topic does not allow us, at this point, to make exhaustive conclusions, this information could be of help in order to better characterize the possible role of MedDi and KD as nonpharmacological therapies in the treatment of AD and, more generically, of neurodegenerative disorders.

48. Design, Development, Validation and Verification of GNC technologies

Abstract: Space missions are becoming more and more challenging, requiring fast and adaptive reactions to external stimuli that can be obtained with higher level of on-board autonomy. Because of such requirements, Guidance Navigation and Control technologies are increasing in complexity and, as a consequence, demand a more structured validation plan, to be started already during the preliminary stages of the mission. GMV standard for the Design, Development, Validation and Verification of GNC technologies is an incremental validation that starts with unitary testing of functions and modes up to flight code run inside representative processors and with engineering/qualification sensor models in close loop. The critical review of requirements allows for the derivation of GNC subsystem specification and for a preliminary design of GNC modes and functions necessary to achieve mission objectives. First step is functions unitary testing, but using previous experience and heritage, it is possible to test the algorithms in a representative closed loop GNC prototype already in phase A-B1. Model-In-the-Loop simulations demonstrate the feasibility of the preliminary design and the robustness of the selected solutions using Monte Carlo test campaigns. Being able to perform such tests during the preliminary stages of the development allows for efficient iterations at system level, giving valuable contributions for trade-offs that involve other subsystems. A fast prototyping based on autocoding is performed as following step, verifying the GNC code in Software-In-the-Loop tests. To demonstrate the feasibility of the design, the Processor-In-the-Loop step is then a key point of the incremental validation in order to verify the behaviour of the GNC code in a representative Hardware and to identify the computational resources required through code profiling. At this stage it is possible that specific function/algorithm (e.g. Image Processing) turns out to be too demanding for a space qualified processor like a LEON. In this case, a HW-SW co-design is performed in order to get advantage of the HW acceleration that an FPGA can offer. An estimation of the required resources and HW units is an essential input for Spacecraft system in order to perform budget activities and interfaces between subsystems. Furthermore, this high level of simulations fidelity, allows to take into account also operations constraints, defining a detailed time line of the different mission phases. In the final stage of the incremental validation Hardware-In-the-Loop is performed, including representative sensors in the loop (e.g. camera in a vision-based GNC). Two environments are foreseen for the HIL tests: an optical test bench where the images are generated on a high resolution screen and only a picture of it is taken; a robotic test bench (platform-art(c)) that re-creates a space-like scenario in terms of illumination conditions and simulated gravity using a dedicated laboratory with robotic arms. The platform-art(c) tests are the most complex to set-up and to execute, but there is a clear advantage in terms of representativeness because no artificial image is generated and the camera directly takes a picture of the target mock-up. This paper will include the details on GMV DDVV approach, which allows to perform end-to-end GNC simulations at very early phases of the mission to bring into considerations aspects normally not really considered in detail till later mission phases. GMV standard allows (through very fast iteration loops and full algorithms/SW coherence approach) algorithms updates/iteration till phases where they should be nominally frozen (thus, gaining flexibility and introduction of last techniques in the late phases of the mission. 50. HERA vision based GNC and autonomy

Abstract: The Asteroid Impact and Deflection Assessment mission (AIDA) is a joint mission between ESA and NASA to demonstrate the kinetic impactor technique for planetary defence. A NASA spacecraft, DART, will impact the moon of the Didymos asteroid binary system and the HERA spacecraft, from ESA, will get closer to investigate what was the effect of such impact. The HERA mission is based on the extensive work done by the Agency and European industry between 2011 and 2016 in the frame of the Asteroid Impact Mission (AIM). In order to be able to detect the slightest change to the system and better understand the effect of the impact, close proximity operations are baselined in the mission timeline. Both AIM and HERA missions share the vision of a highly autonomous system, which is necessary to allow such close proximity operations. As it is the first time that a binary asteroid system will be studied from such a short distance, it is also important to remark the value of the scientific return of the mission. In order to guarantee a high level of autonomy, the first step is to give to the Spacecraft enough on-board information to estimate its position with respect to the asteroids and, based on that estimation, to act accordingly following a preloaded sequence of commands or objectives. To achieve this requirement, a vision based GNC has been designed, which includes image processing algorithms and a navigation filter capable of processing the visual information and to get the desired estimation. The HERA GNC baseline presented here will not only use a visual camera but also several other payloads, involving data fusion with a hyperspectral/thermal camera and a laser altimeter (PALT). These additional instruments will be able to increase the robustness of the strategy: the hyperspectral/thermal imager will be able to see where the AFC is limited by shadows and phase angle issues; PALT will be able to give observability on the radial direction, which is poorly estimated in a vision based GNC (especially if the low gravity environment does not allow stable orbits and hyperbolic arcs are preferred for safety reasons). HERA close proximity operations have been investigated and the design will be consolidated by the end of Phase B1. A specific distance of 8 km is identified from a GNC driving factor. If the Spacecraft will be outside the 8km sphere centred in the main asteroid, the AFC will give a full visibility of the body and centroiding techniques can be used for the state estimation. For closer fly-bys the entire camera FoV will be covered by the asteroid and a feature tracking technique is baselined to maintain the relative state estimation. Image Processing and navigation functions have been designed taking into account this factor and a detailed designed showed its feasibility taking into account ground segment operations and pushing the validation of the on-board algorithms up to TRL 5/6 with Hardware-In-the-Loop tests. This paper will include the consolidated strategies of the vision based GNC designed for the HERA mission, together with the test campaign results. Additionally, the required future developments will be addressed.
