The hyperbolic formulations of numerical relativity due to Baumgarte, Shapiro, Shibata & Nakamura (BSSN) and Nagy Ortiz & Reula (NOR), among others, achieve stability through the effective embedding of general relativity within the larger Z4 system. In doing so, various elliptic constraints are promoted to dynamical degrees of freedom, permitting the advection of constraint violating modes. Here we demonstrate that it is possible to achieve equivalent performance through a modification of fully covariant and conformal Z4 (FCCZ4) wherein constraint violations are coupled to a reference metric completely independently of the physical metric. We show that this approach works in the presence of black holes and holds up robustly in a variety of spherically symmetric simulations including the critical collapse of a scalar field. We then demonstrate that our formulation is strongly hyperbolic through the use of a pseudodifferential first order reduction and compare its hyperbolicity properties to those of FCCZ4 and generalized BSSN (GBSSN). Our present approach makes use of a static Lorentzian reference metric and does not appear to provide significant advantages over FCCZ4. However, we speculate that dynamical specification of the reference metric may provide a means of exerting greater control over constraint violations than what is provided by current BSSN-type formulations., Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures

As shown by Marunovic and Murkovic, non-minimal d-stars, composite structures consisting of a boson star and a global monopole non-minimally coupled to the general relativistic field, can have extremely high gravitational compactness. In a previous paper we demonstrated that these ground-state stationary solutions are sometimes additionally characterized by shells of bosonic matter located far from the center of symmetry. In order to investigate the question of stability posed by Marunovic and Murkovic, we investigate the stability of several families of d-stars using both numerical simulations and linear perturbation theory. For all families investigated, we find that the most highly compact solutions, along with those solutions exhibiting shells of bosonic matter, are unstable to radial perturbations and are therefore poor candidates for astrophysically-relevant black hole mimickers or other highly compact stable objects., Comment: 19 pages, 24 figures

We report on critical phenomena in the gravitational collapse of the electromagnetic field in axisymmetry using cylindrical coordinates. We perform detailed numerical simulations of four families of dipole and quadrupole initial data fine-tuned to the onset of black hole formation. It has been previously observed that families which bifurcate into two on-axis critical solutions exhibit distinct growth characteristics from those which collapse at the centre of symmetry. In contrast, our results indicate similar growth characteristics and periodicity across all families of initial data, including those examined in earlier works. More precisely, for all families investigated, we observe power-law scaling for the maximum of the electromagnetic field invariant ($\mathrm{max}|F_{\mu\nu}F^{\mu\nu}| \sim |p-p^{\star}|^{-2\gamma}$) with $\gamma \approx 0.149(9)$. We find evidence of approximate discrete self-similarity in near-critical time evolutions with a log-scale echoing period of $\Delta \approx 0.62(8)$ across all families of initial data. Our methodology, while reproducing the results of prior studies up to a point, provides new insights into the later stages of critical searches and we propose a mechanism to explain the observed differences between our work and the previous calculations., Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures

The present work reports on the generation of short-pulse coherent extreme ultraviolet radiation of controlled polarization. The proposed strategy is based on high-order harmonics generated in pre-aligned molecules. Field-free molecular alignment produced by a short linearly-polarized infrared laser pulse is used to break the isotropy of a gas medium. Driving the aligned molecules by a circularly-polarized infrared pulse allows to transfer the anisotropy of the medium to the polarization of the generated harmonic light. The ellipticity of the latter is controlled by adjusting the angular distribution of the molecules at the time they interact with the driving pulse. Extreme ultraviolet radiation produced with high degree of ellipticity (close to circular) is demonstrated.

This Report summarizes the results of the activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group in the period 2014-2016. The main goal of the working group was to present the state-of-the-art of Higgs physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first part compiles the most up-to-date predictions of Higgs boson production cross sections and decay branching ratios, parton distribution functions, and off-shell Higgs boson production and interference effects. The second part discusses the recent progress in Higgs effective field theory predictions, followed by the third part on pseudo-observables, simplified template cross section and fiducial cross section measurements, which give the baseline framework for Higgs boson property measurements. The fourth part deals with the beyond the Standard Model predictions of various benchmark scenarios of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended scalar sector, Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and exotic Higgs boson decays. This report follows three previous working-group reports: Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002), Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. The LUMINEU is designed to investigate the possibility to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{100}$Mo by means of a large array of scintillating bolometers based on ZnMoO$_4$ crystals enriched in $^{100}$Mo. High energy resolution and relatively fast detectors, which are able to measure both the light and the heat generated upon the interaction of a particle in a crystal, are very promising for the recognition and rejection of background events. We present the LUMINEU concepts and the experimental results achieved aboveground and underground with large-mass natural and enriched crystals. The measured energy resolution, the $\alpha/\beta$ discrimination power and the radioactive internal contamination are all within the specifications for the projected final LUMINEU sensitivity. Simulations and preliminary results confirm that the LUMINEU technology can reach zero background in the region of interest (around 3 MeV) with exposures of the order of hundreds kg$\times$years, setting the bases for a next generation $0\nu2\beta$ decay experiment capable to explore the inverted hierarchy region of the neutrino mass pattern., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted as proceedings of the TAUP 2015 conference

The reports collected in these proceedings have been presented in the third French-Ukrainian workshop on the instrumentation developments for high-energy physics held at LAL, Orsay on October 15-16. The workshop was conducted in the scope of the IDEATE International Associated Laboratory (LIA). Joint developments between French and Ukrainian laboratories and universities as well as new proposals have been discussed. We consider spherically symmetric static composite structures consisting of a boson star and a global monopole, minimally or non-minimally coupled to the general relativistic gravitational field. In the non-minimally coupled case, Marunovic and Murkovic have shown that these objects, so-called boson D-stars, can be sufficiently gravitationally compact so as to potentially mimic black holes. Here, we present the results of an extensive numerical parameter space survey which reveals additional new and unexpected phenomenology in the model. In particular, focusing on families of boson D-stars which are parameterized by the central amplitude of the boson field, we find configurations for both the minimally and non-minimally coupled cases that contain one or more shells of bosonic matter located far from the origin. In parameter space, each shell spontaneously appears as one tunes through some critical central amplitude of the boson field. In some cases the shells apparently materialize at spatial infinity: in these instances their areal radii are observed to obey a universal scaling law in the vicinity of the critical amplitude. The effect of ultrashort laser-induced morphological changes upon irradiation of silicon with double pulse sequences is investigated under conditions that lead to mass removal. The temporal delay between twelve double and equal-energy pulses (Ep=0.24J/cm2 each, with pulse duration tp=430fs, 800nm laser wavelength) was varied between 0 and 14ps and a decrease of the damaged area, crater depth size and periodicity of the induced subwavelength ripples (by 3-4%) was observed with increasing pulse delay. The proposed underlying mechanism is based on the combination of carrier excitation and energy thermalization and capillary wave solidification and aims to provide an alternative explanation to the control of ripple periodicity by temporal pulse tailoring. Coherent light pulses of few to hundreds of femtoseconds (fs) duration have prolifically served the field of ultrafast phenomena. While fs pulses address mainly dynamics of nuclear motion in molecules or lattices in the gas, liquid or condensed matter phase, the advent of attosecond pulses has in recent years provided direct experimental access to ultrafast electron dynamics. However, there are processes involving nuclear motion in molecules and in particular coupled electronic and nuclear motion that possess few fs or even sub-fs dynamics. In the present work we have succeeded in addressing simultaneously vibrational and electronic dynamics in molecular Hydrogen. Utilizing a broadband extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) continuum the entire, Frank-Condon allowed spectrum of H2 is coherently excited. Vibrational, electronic and ionization 1fs scale dynamics are subsequently tracked by means of XUV-pump-XUV-probe measurements. These reflect the intrinsic molecular behavior as the XUV probe pulse hardly distorts the molecular potential.

We report the first determination of the relative strong-phase difference between D^0 -> K^0_S,L K^+ K^- and D^0-bar -> K^0_S,L K^+ K^-. In addition, we present updated measurements of the relative strong-phase difference between D^0 -> K^0_S,L pi^+ pi^- and D^0-bar -> K^0_S,L pi^+ pi^-. Both measurements exploit the quantum coherence between a pair of D^0 and D^0-bar mesons produced from psi(3770) decays. The strong-phase differences measured are important for determining the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle gamma/phi_3 in B^- -> K^- D^0-tilde decays, where D^0-tilde is a D^0 or D^0-bar meson decaying to K^0_S h^+ h^- (h=pi,K), in a manner independent of the model assumed to describe the D^0 -> K^0_S h^+ h^- decay. Using our results, the uncertainty in gamma/phi_3 due to the error on the strong-phase difference is expected to be between 1.7 and 3.9 degrees for an analysis using B^- K^- D^0-tilde D^0-tilde -> K^0_S pi^+ pi^- decays, and between 3.2 and 3.9 degrees for an analysis based on B^- -> K^- D^0-tilde, D^0-tilde -> K^0_S K^+ K^- decays. A measurement is also presented of the CP-odd fraction, F_-, of the decay D^0 -> K^0_S K^+ K^- in the region of the phi -> K^+ K^- resonance. We find that in a region within 0.01 GeV^2/c^4 of the nominal phi mass squared F_- > 0.91 at the 90% confidence level., Comment: 60 pages also available through http://www.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLNS/, accepted for publication in PRD

The main atmospheric parameters and abundances of the iron group elements (vanadium, chromium, iron, cobalt and nickel) are determined for 62 red giant "clump" stars revealed in the Galactic field by the Hipparcos orbiting observatory. The stars form a homogeneous sample with the mean value of temperature T=4750 +- 160K, of surface gravity log g = 2.41 +- 0.26 and the mean value of metallicity [Fe/H] = -0.04 +- 0.15 dex. A Gaussian fit to the [Fe/H] distribution produces the mean [Fe/H] = -0.01 dex and dispersion of [Fe/H] = 0.08 dex. The near-solar metallicity and small dispersion of [Fe/H] of clump stars of the Galaxy obtained in this work confirm the theoretical model of the Hipparcos clump by Girardi & Salaris (2001). This suggests that nearby clump stars are (in the mean) relatively young objects, reflecting mainly the near-solar metallicities developed in the local disk during the last few Gyrs of its history. Observations show that 1612 MHz masers of OH/IR stars can fade on a timescale of a decade. This fading is probably associated with the switch from rapid mass loss, which is ultimately linked with an internal He-shell flash, to the much slower mass loss supported by more quiescent conditions. We study the observed maser decay with a composite computational model, comprising a time-dependent chemical model of the envelope, and a radiation transfer model which provides the maser pumping. Our combined model is able to reproduce the rapid decay of maser intensity, following a sudden drop in the stellar mass-loss rate. The explanation for the rapid fall in maser emission is not a fall in the OH number density, or the kinetic temperature in the inverted layers, but the loss of a radiative pump route which carries population from level 1 to level 4 via levels 16, 15 and 11. The loss of these pump routes is a result, in turn, of a greatly reduced energy density of 53 micron radiation.
