Opportunities for children to be involved in the decisions made about them is a part of current statutory educational legislation. Person-centred planning (PCP) has been proposed as an appropriate method of meeting statutory requirements. However, there is a dearth of research into its application within education. The paper describes a systematic literature review of current research into PCP within education for pupils with SEMH and the associated outcomes. PCP appears to be an effective way of engaging children, young people and their families but research within education is currently limited and methodologically weak. More rigorous research is needed into PCP and its effectiveness and should include the use of standardised and/or observable measures, more varied ranges of contexts and participants, and longitudinal and child-led designs.

However, young people within alternative provisions (APs) may lack opportunities to be heard. This paper reports on an action research project with staff from an AP for children at risk of exclusion. Participants opted to trial the use of the PCP approach 'Making Action Plans' ('MAPs'; carried out virtually due to Covid-19 restrictions) and evaluated the project through two focus groups. Findings indicate that (virtual) use of MAPs requires staff to carefully consider their setting's structure, needs, capacity and capabilities. Pre-meeting preparation and adapting the MAP process with technology improved engagement, access and alternative ways of working. The MAP process provided a range of positive outcomes as a by-product of its implementation.

In recent years, the issue of the extent to which an individual has or should have the right to religious freedom, and to manifest that freedom by wearing particular items of clothing, has become very contentious. Some nations have seen fit to ban the wearing of particular items of clothing thought to have religious significance, at least in some contexts. Courts from a range of jurisdictions have sought to grapple with these issues, involving a range of values and sometimes competing interests. In this article, the author considers constitutional (and discrimination) issues that would arise if the Australian Parliament enacted legislation prohibiting the wearing of particular items of clothing often thought to have religious significance, in particular the "hijab", "burqa" or "niqab". He draws upon the rich jurisprudence concerning these issues in other jurisdictions, where much more litigation has taken place regarding the question than Australia. The volume of litigation elsewhere means that consideration of the Australian position is enriched by considering some of the specific issues that have been considered by overseas courts, with the likelihood that at some stage similar issues will need to be considered by Australian courts. These overseas developments should inform the consideration of the interpretation of the Australian provisions, and assist in reaching an interpretation of the relevant provisions. As with all comparative analysis, it is necessary to bear in mind the different statutory, constitutional and convention context in which decisions are reached. The author also considers briefly whether a different result would apply if the ban were passed at State level. This is not an abstract argument; a current Senator in the Australian Parliament, has personally called for a burqa ban, and private members' bills have been introduced in New South Wales and South Australia to introduce such a ban, at least in some circumstances. In Part A, the author sets the statutory framework for the discussion. In Part B, the meaning of the wearing of the hijab and burqa is considered. Part C considers how laws banning the wearing of religious dress or symbols have been considered in various courts. In Part D, he considers the validity of a Commonwealth law that banned the wearing of religious dress or symbols. (Contains 155 footnotes.)

This article considers important potential legal consequences from the helicopter tragedy in January 2023 in which four people were killed. The event raises legal issues including the viability of potential claims for psychiatric injury for those who unwittingly observed the horrible events or who provided rescue efforts, acknowledging that, at this time, no fault has yet been established in any individual. As will be shown, the law in the United Kingdom (UK) has proceeded along a path with respect to these claims that has arguably become untenable and indefensible. The High Court of Australia has not considered claims for psychiatric claims for more than 20 years, presenting our Court with an opportunity, if one arose, to set our law on a different path than the UK example. With changes afoot in the judges sitting on the High Court later in 2023 this article addresses a hope for a future change enabling greater protection of fundamental rights of an individual to know the accusations and evidence against them. The decision in SDCV, by a slim majority of one, validated the challenged law in s 46(2) of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal Act 1975 (Cth). This precluded the right of SDCV or his legal team from knowledge of the evidence against him. This article documents the decision and reasoning of the High Court in this case. Several post-common envelope binaries have slightly increasing, decreasing or oscillating orbital periods. One of several possible explanations is light travel-time changes, caused by the binary centre-of-mass being perturbed by the gravitational pull of a third body. Further studies are necessary because it is not clear how a third body could have survived subdwarf progenitor mass-loss at the tip of the Red Giant Branch, or formed subsequently. Thirty-nine primary eclipse times for V470 Cam were secured with the Philip Wetton Telescope during the period 2016 November 25th to 2017 January 27th. Available eclipse timings suggest a brown dwarf tertiary having a mass of at least 0.0236(40) M⊙, an elliptical orbit with an eccentricity of 0.376(98) and an orbital period of 11.77(67) years about the binary centreof- mass. The mass and orbit suggest a hybrid formation, in which some ejected material from the subdwarf progenitor was accreted on to a precursor tertiary component, although additional observations would be needed to confirm this interpretation and investigate other possible origins for the binary orbital period change.

Subjects discussed during the Eighth Meeting on Hot Subdwarfs and Related Objects are summarised. In particular, a succinct presentation is given of challenges to stellar evolution arising from recent observations. Mention is also made of topics not covered in the meeting such as the need for small revisions to stellar envelope opacities currently in use. I conclude with a brief discussion of current developments which will influence future hot subdwarf research and necessary initiatives that need to be taken.
