1. Longitudinal Assessment of Play and Adaptive Behavior in Young Children with Developmental Disabilities.

A study assessed the relationship between play and adaptive behavior among 13 preschool children with developmental disabilities. Children were assessed every six months over a three-year period. Abstract

Numerous studies have demonstrated that the use of screening mammography improves the prognosis of breast cancer, and that more widespread use of mammographic screening would not only save many lives but would also permit greater numbers of women to be treated with breast-conserving therapy. Nevertheless, the majority of women of appropriate age have not adopted routine mammography into their health care programs, and physicians do not widely recommend mammography to their patients. Clearly, any understanding of the behavioral impediments to routine mammography may have large payoffs in terms of public health. Indeed, in an era of otherwise skyrocketing costs of medical care, the benefits which may be achieved through mammographic screening are quite cost-effective. In an effort to evaluate the reasons for seeking or not seeking mammography, researchers studied 1,002 women. These women consisted of 501 subjects who were at high risk for breast cancer, most often because one or more first-degree relatives had breast cancer, and 501 matched controls. Although it might be expected that women at increased risk would take greater advantage of opportunities for early diagnosis, this was not the case. This failure to obtain mammographic screening was not due to a failure to perceive the increased risk. Seventy-nine percent of the high-risk women perceived themselves as high-risk, in contrast to 54 percent of the controls. Nevertheless, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups regarding the number of mammograms received. Curiously, among the women in either group who had not had a mammogram, the lack of a physician's order to do so was given as a major reason, but among the women who did have a mammogram, a physician's order was less important and major reasons given for deciding on mammography included media publicity. The results indicate that members of families with a high incidence of breast cancer should continue to be sought out and encouraged to participate in regular breast cancer screening programs. There is a broad difference of opinion among the many stakeholders in scholarly publishing about how to precisely define open access publishing. Are “open access” and “open data” what we mean by open? Does “open” mean anything else? Does it mean “to make available,” or “to make freely available in a particular format?” Is a clearer definition needed (or maybe just better education on the current definition)? Why or why not? At present, some stakeholders see public access as being an acceptable stopping point in the move toward open access. Others see “open” as requiring free and immediate access with articles being available in CC-BY format. The range of opinions between these extremes is vast. How should these differences be decided? Who should decide? Is it possible to make binding recommendations (and how)? Is consensus necessary? Abstract

The scholarly community’s current definition of “open” captures only some of the attributes of openness that exist across different publishing models and content types. Open is not an end in itself, but a means for achieving the most effective dissemination of scholarship and research. We suggest that the different attributes of open exist along a broad spectrum and propose an alternative way of describing and evaluating openness based on four attributes: discoverable, accessible, reusable, and transparent. These four attributes of openness, taken together, form the draft “DART Framework for Open Access.” This framework can be applied to both research artifacts as well as research processes. We welcome input from the broader scholarly community about this framework. Abstract

With health disparities still pervasive and persistent in the United States, medical researchers and social scientists continue to develop recruitment strategies to increase the inclusion of racial/ethnic minority groups in research and interventions. Effective methods for recruiting samples of African American participants for pediatric research may be best understood when situated within an overarching conceptual model—one that serves to organize and explain effective recruitment strategies. A theoretical framework well suited for this purpose is Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, which views individuals as influencing and being influenced by (both directly and indirectly) a series of interconnected social systems. Based on the ecological systems theory and on previous research from multiple domains (e.g., medicine, psychology, public health, social work), in the current article, we review strategies for effective recruitment of African American children and adolescents for research. As the fiscal restraints facing school districts continues to mount and the needs of our student population seems to increase, there is even a greater need for districts to spend their limited funds on teacher professional development that is effective. More and more there is a move away from bringing in the outside expert and instead trying to create site based collaborative learning teams. This paper examines the model of a collaborative learning community in an effort to distill what aspects of it actually helped content area teachers to incorporate increased instructional time on literary processes. This model is examined in relation to research on effective teacher professional development. The key questions addressed in this paper are aimed at identifying the big ideas behind positive changes in classroom practice with an attempt to analyze what, in terms of collaborative professional development, fosters these changes in classroom practice
