The specific geometry of a strip provides connections between solitons and solitonic vortices, which are vortices with a solitonic behaviour in the infinite direction of the strip. We show that there exist stationary solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with k vortices on a transverse line, which bifurcate from the soliton solution as the width of the strip is increased. After decomposing into Fourier series with respect to the transverse variable, the construction of these solitonic vortices is achieved by relying on a careful analysis of the linearized operator around the soliton solution: we apply a fixed point argument to solve the equation in the directions orthogonal to the kernel of the linearized operator, and then handle the direction corresponding to the kernel by an inverse function theorem.

As a sequel to our previous analysis in [9] arXiv:2202.09411 on the Gross-Pitaevskii equation on the product space $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T}$, we construct a branch of finite energy travelling waves as minimizers of the Ginzburg-Landau energy at fixed momentum. We deduce that minimizers are precisely the planar dark solitons when the length of the transverse direction is less than a critical value, and that they are genuinely two-dimensional solutions otherwise. The proof of the existence of minimizers is based on the compactness of minimizing sequences, relying on a new symmetrization argument that is well-suited to the periodic setting.

We study the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in dimension two with periodic conditions in one direction, or equivalently on the product space $\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T}_L$ where $L > 0$ and $\mathbb{T}_L = \mathbb{R} / L \mathbb{Z}.$ We focus on the variational problem consisting in minimizing the Ginzburg-Landau energy under a fixed momentum constraint. We prove that there exists a threshold value for $L$ below which minimizers are the one-dimensional dark solitons, and above which no minimizer can be one-dimensional.

We introduce a functional framework taylored to investigate the minimality and stability properties of the Ginzburg-Landau vortex of degree one on the whole plane. We prove that a renormalized Ginzburg-Landau energy is well-defined in that framework and that the vortex is its unique global minimizer up to the invariances by translation and phase shift. Our main result is a nonlinear coercivity estimate for the renormalized energy around the vortex, from which we can deduce its orbital stability as a solution to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, the natural Hamiltonian evolution equation associated to the Ginzburg-Landau energy.

We provide a variational construction of special solutions to the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equations. These solutions take the form of N vortex patches with N-fold symmetry , which are steady in a uniformly rotating frame. Moreover, we investigate their asymptotic properties when the size of the corresponding patches vanishes. In this limit, we prove these solutions to be a desingularization of N Dirac masses with the same intensity, located on the N vertices of a regular polygon rotating at a constant angular velocity.

We pursue our work on the asymptotic regimes of the Landau-Lifshitz equation for bi-axial ferromagnets. We put the focus on the cubic Schr{\"o}dinger equation, which is known to describe the dynamics in a regime of strong easy-axis anisotropy. In any dimension, we rigorously prove this claim for solutions with sufficient regularity. In this regime, we additionally classify the one-dimensional solitons of the Landau-Lifshitz equation and quantify their convergence towards the solitons of the one-dimensional cubic Schr{\"o}dinger equation.

It is well-known that the dynamics of biaxial ferromagnets with a strong easy-plane anisotropy is essentially governed by the Sine-Gordon equation. In this paper, we provide a rigorous justification to this observation. More precisely, we show the convergence of the solutions to the Landau-Lifshitz equation for biaxial ferromagnets towards the solutions to the Sine-Gordon equation in the regime of a strong easy-plane anisotropy. Moreover, we establish the sharpness of our convergence result. This result holds for solutions to the Landau-Lifshitz equation in high order Sobolev spaces. We first provide an alternative proof for local well-posedness in this setting by introducing high order energy quantities with better symmetrization properties. We then derive the convergence from the consistency of the Landau-Lifshitz equation with the Sine-Gordon equation by using well-tailored energy estimates. As a by-product, we also obtain a further derivation of the free wave regime of the Landau-Lifshitz equation.

We construct families of smooth travelling-wave solutions to the inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic equation (SQG). These solutions can be viewed as the equivalents for this equation of the vortex anti-vortex pairs in the context of the incompressible Euler equation. Our argument relies on the stream function formulation and eventually amounts to solving a fractional nonlinear elliptic equation by variational methods.

In quantum field theory, the vacuum is a fluctuating medium which behaves as a nonlinear polarizable material. In this article, we perform the first rigorous derivation of the magnetic Euler-Heisenberg effective energy, a nonlinear functional that describes the effective fluctuations of the quantum vacuum in a classical magnetic field. We start from a classical magnetic field in interaction with a quan-tized Dirac field in its ground state, and we study a limit in which the classical magnetic field is slowly varying. After a change of scales, this is equivalent to a semi-classical limit $\hbar\to0$, with a strong magnetic field of order $1/\hbar$. In this regime, we prove that the energy of Dirac's polarized vacuum converges to the Euler-Heisenberg functional. The model has ultraviolet divergences, which we regularize using the Pauli-Villars method. We also discuss how to remove the regularization of the Euler-Heisenberg effective Lagrangian, using charge renormaliza-tion, perturbatively to any order of the coupling constant., Comment: Final version to appear in J. We pursue our work on the dynamical stability of dark solitons for the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. In this paper, we prove their asymptotic stability under small perturbations in the energy space. In particular, our results do not require smallness in some weighted spaces or a priori spectral assumptions. Our strategy is reminiscent of the one used by Martel and Merle in various works regarding generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations. The important feature of our contribution is related to the fact that while Korteweg-de Vries equations possess unidirectional dispersion, Schr\"odinger equations do not.

We review recent results about the derivation and the analysis of two Hartree-Fock-type models for the polarization of vacuum. We pay particular attention to the variational construction of a self-consistent polarized vacuum, and to the physical agreement between our non-perturbative construction and the perturbative description provided by Quantum Electrodynamics.

We establish the stability in the energy space for sums of solitons of the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation when their speeds are mutually distinct and distinct from zero, and when the solitons are initially well-separated and spatially ordered according to their speeds.

Using the Pauli-Villars regularization and arguments from convex analysis, we construct solutions to the classical time-independent Maxwell equations in Dirac's vacuum, in the presence of small external electromagnetic sources. The vacuum is not an empty space, but rather a quantum fluctuating medium which behaves as a nonlinear polarizable material. Its behavior is described by a Dirac equation involving infinitely many particles. The quantum corrections to the usual Maxwell equations are nonlinear and nonlocal. We perform rigorously the charge renormalization of the so-called reduced Bogoliubov-Dirac-Fock (rBDF) model. This nonlinear theory, based on the Dirac operator, describes atoms and molecules while taking into account vacuum polarization effects. We consider the total physical density including both the external density of a nucleus and the self-consistent polarization of the Dirac sea, but no `real' electron. We show that it admits an asymptotic expansion to any order in powers of the physical coupling constant $\alphaph$, provided that the ultraviolet cut-off behaves as $\Lambda\sim e^{3\pi(1-Z_3)/2\alphaph}\gg1$. In this paper, we proceed along our analysis of the Korteweg-de Vries approximation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation initiated in a previous paper. At the long-wave limit, we establish that solutions of small amplitude to the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation split into two waves with opposite constant speeds $\pm \sqrt{2}$, each of which are solutions to a Korteweg-de Vries equation. We also compute an estimate of the error term which is somewhat optimal as long as travelling waves are considered. This paper presents recent results concerning the existence and qualitative properties of travelling wave solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation posed on the whole space R^N. Unlike the defocusing nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations with null condition at infinity, the presence of non-zero conditions at infinity yields a rather rich and delicate dynamics. We focus on the case N = 2 and N = 3, and also briefly review some classical results on the one-dimensional case. The works we survey provide rigorous justifications to the impressive series of results which Jones, Putterman and Roberts established by formal and numerical arguments.

We investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the localised solitary waves for the generalised Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations. In particular, we compute their first order asymptotics in any dimension $N \geq 2$.

The fact that the Korteweg-de-Vries equation offers a good approximation of long-wave solutions of small amplitude to the one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation was derived several years ago in the physical literature. In this paper, we provide a rigorous proof of this fact, and compute a precise estimate for the error term. Our proof relies on the integrability of both the equations. We study the reduced Bogoliubov-Dirac-Fock (BDF) energy which allows to describe relativistic electrons interacting with the Dirac sea, in an external electrostatic potential. The model can be seen as a mean-field approximation of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) where photons and the so-called exchange term are neglected. A state of the system is described by its one-body density matrix, an infinite rank self-adjoint operator which is a compact perturbation of the negative spectral projector of the free Dirac operator (the Dirac sea). We study the minimization of the reduced BDF energy under a charge constraint. We prove the existence of minimizers for a large range of values of the charge, and any positive value of the coupling constant $\alpha$. Our result covers neutral and positively charged molecules, provided that the positive charge is not large enough to create electron-positron pairs. We also prove that the density of any minimizer is an $L^1$ function and compute the effective charge of the system, recovering the usual renormalization of charge: the physical coupling constant is related to $\alpha$ by the formula $\alpha_{\rm phys}\simeq \alpha(1+2\alpha/(3\pi)\log\Lambda)^{-1}$, where $\Lambda$ is the ultraviolet cut-off. We eventually prove an estimate on the highest number of electrons which can be bound by a nucleus of charge $Z$. In the nonrelativistic limit, we obtain that this number is $\leq 2Z$, recovering a result of Lieb. The purpose of this paper is to provide a rigorous mathematical proof of the existence of travelling wave solutions to the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in dimensions two and three. Our arguments, based on minimization under constraints, yield a full branch of solutions, and extend earlier results, where only a part of the branch was built.
