International audience; RationaleCertain activities embedded in academic culture (international conferences, field missions) are an important source of greenhouse gases (e.g., van Ewijk & Hoekman, 2021). Although some members of the scientific community have started to propose ways to reduce the impact of international conferences (e.g., Warner et al., 2022), collective efforts should be pursued to reduce the carbon footprint of the academic world. Serious games have been used in the past to promote attenuation and adaptation behaviours (Fernández Galeote et al., 2021). Nevertheless, to our knowledge, the deployed evaluations have only measured the changes on knowledge and not on behaviour. MethodologyParticipants working in French public research laboratories (N = 970) will be recruited and randomised to one of two arms: a) serious game group aiming to raising awareness about carbon footprint and identifying ways to reduce it, b) control group. The experimental part will last three hours. Participants will complete a survey about their work-related behaviours (number of flights per year, daily commuting, digital use) and about the institutional, sociodemographic and psychological factors related to behaviours (intention towards reducing travel by air, number of children). The evaluation will consist in 5 measurements: one baseline survey and the four others spread over the two years following the intervention.AnalysisData will be analysed by using mixed linear methods. Moreover, mediation and moderation analysis will be carried out to test the factors enabling or constraining behaviour change.Expected ResultsCarbon footprint reduction should be more important in the experimental group. Institutional, sociodemographic and psychological factors (hierarchical position, beliefs about negative consequences of changing behaviour) might moderate behaviour change.Conclusion The present study will allow to assess the effects of a serious game aiming carbon footprint reduction within Academia members. La partie expérimentale durera trois heures. Les participants répondront à une enquête sur leurs comportements professionnels (nombre de vols par an, trajets quotidiens, utilisation du numérique) et sur les facteurs institutionnels, sociodémographiques et psychologiques liés aux comportements (intention de réduire les déplacements en avion, nombre d'enfants). L'évaluation consistera en 5 mesures : une enquête de base et les quatre autres réparties sur les deux années suivant l'intervention.AnalyseLes données seront analysées en utilisant des méthodes linéaires mixtes. En outre, une analyse de médiation et de modération sera effectuée pour tester les facteurs permettant ou limitant le changement de comportement.Résultats attendusLa réduction de l'empreinte carbone devrait être plus importante dans le groupe expérimental. Les facteurs institutionnels, sociodémographiques et psychologiques (position hiérarchique, croyances sur les conséquences négatives du changement de comportement) pourraient modérer le changement de comportement.Conclusion La présente étude permettra d'évaluer les effets d'un jeu sérieux visant la réduction de l'empreinte carbone au sein des membres du milieu universitaire. International audience; In a context of densification of urban centers and climate change, coastal megacities in emerging countries have to face new issues about water management. With more than 9 million inhabitants, Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), the economic capital of Vietnam, is in full demographic and economic expansion. The city does not have water treatment networks that meet the urgent needs. Indeed, in 2020, less than 15% of the population is connected to a sewerage network and treatment plant. The deterioration of water quality of Saigon River crossing the city is dramatic. Ho Chi Minh City authorities therefore plan to build new sanitation networks and ten wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) over the next fifteen years, drawing inspiration from the centralized water management models of industrialized countries. However, the question arises of the relevance of this extremely expensive choice and not necessarily adapted to the particular conditions of this megacity in tropical monsoon zone and under the influence of tidal cycles. Using the estuarine biogeochemical model (C-GEM), this study aims at assessing the water quality of the Saigon River (oxygen depletion, nutrients concentration) in response to three scenarios of HCMC development (population growth and new water management infrastructures). In addition, projected new climatic conditions (temperature, hydrology) will be considered. The results of three scenarios show that the construction of new WWTPs is relevant. However, the rapid population growth in HCMC will make improvements support by WWTPs not sufficient to turn the water quality in Saigon River from a state of bad quality to good as expected.

Studying the spatial and temporal distribution of surface water resources is critical, especially in highly populated areas and in regions under climate change pressure. There is an increasing number of satellite Earth observations that can provide information to monitor surface water at global scale. However, mapping surface waters at local and regional scales is still a challenge for numerous reasons (insufficient spatial resolution, vegetation or cloud opacity, limited time-frequency or time-record, information content of the instrument, lack in global retrieval method, interpretability of results, etc.). In this paper, we use 17 years of the MODIS (MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer) observations at a 8-day resolution. This satellite dataset is combined with ground expertise to analyse the evolution of surface waters at the Cambodia/Vietnam border in the Upper Mekong Delta. The trends and evolution of surface waters are very significant and contrasted, illustrating the impact of agriculture practices and dykes construction. In most of the study area in Cambodia. surface water areas show a decreasing trend but with a strong inter-annual variability. In specific areas, an increase of the wet surfaces is even observed. Ground expertise and historical knowledge of the development of the territory enable to link the decrease to ongoing excavation of drainage canals and the increase of deforestation and land reclamation, exposing flooded surfaces previously hidden by vegetation cover. By contrast, in Vietnam, the decreasing trend in wet surfaces is very clear and can be explained by the development of dykes dating back to the 1990s with an acceleration in the late 2000s as part of a national strategy of agriculture intensification. Sedimentological and geochemical data were obtained for bed sediments from a tropical estuary environment in Vietnam in October 2014, January 2016, and November 2016. The data include grain-size distribution, percentage of clay, silt and sand, percentage of organic matter, concentration of total particulate phosphorus (TPP), concentration of particulate inorganic phosphorus (PIP), concentration of particulate organic phosphorus (POP), percentage of total nitrogen (TN), percentage of total carbon (TC), trace metals concentrations (V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Mo, Cd, Pb) and major elements (Al, Fe, Mn). Geochemical indexes (Enrichment factor EF and Geo-accumulation Index I-geo) and sediment quality guideline (mean Effect Range Median quotients) were calculated.

Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC, Vietnam) is one of the fastest growing megacities in the world. In this paper, we attempt to analyse the dynamics of nutrients, suspended sediments, and water discharges in its aquatic systems today and in the future. The work is based on nine sampling sites along the Saigon River and one on the Dongnai River to identify the reference water status upstream from the urban area and the increase in fluxes that occur within the city and its surroundings. For the first time, the calculated fluxes allow drawing up sediment and nutrient budgets at the basin scale and the quantification of total nutrient loading to the estuarine and coastal zones (2012-2016 period). Based on both national Vietnamese and supplementary monitoring programs, we estimated the water, total suspended sediment, and nutrients (Total N, Total P, and dissolved silica: DSi) fluxes at 137 m(3)year(-1), 3,292 x 10(3)tonSS year(-1), 5,323 tonN year(-1), 450 tonP year(-1), and 2,734 tonSi year(-1)for the Saigon River and 1,693 m(3)year(-1), 1,175 x 10(3)tonSS year(-1), 31,030 tonN year(-1), 1,653 tonP year(-1), and 31,138 tonSi year(-1)for the Dongnai River, respectively. Nutrient fluxes provide an indicator of coastal eutrophication potential (indicator of coastal eutrophication potential), using nutrient stoichiometry ratios. Despite an excess of nitrogen and phosphorus over silica, estuarine waters downstream of the megacity are not heavily impacted by HCMC. Finally, we analysed scenarios of future trends (2025-2050) for the nutrient inputs on the basis of expected population growth in HCMC and improvement of wastewater treatment capacity. We observed that without the construction of a large number of additional wastewater treatment plants, the eutrophication problem is likely to worsen. The results are discussed in the context of the wastewater management policy.
