10. Direct numerical simulation of developed compressible flow in square ducts

Abstract

We carry out direct numerical simulation of compressible square duct flow in the range of bulk Mach numbers M_b = 0.2-3, and up to friction Reynolds number Re_{\tau} = 500. The effects of flow compressibility on the secondary motions are found to be negligible, as the typical Mach number associated with the cross-stream flow is always less than 0.1. As in the incompressible case, we find that the wall law for the mean streamwise velocity applies with good approximation with respect to the nearest wall, upon suitable compressibility transformation. The same conclusion also applies to a passive scalar field, whereas the mean temperature does not exhibit inertial layers because of nonuniformity of the aerodynamic heating. We further find that the same temperature/velocity relation that holds for planar channels is applicable with good approximation for square ducts, and develop a similar relation between temperature and passive scalars.

11. On the role of secondary motions in turbulent square duct flow

Abstract

We use a direct numerical simulations (DNS) database for turbulent flow in a square duct up to bulk Reynolds number $\Rey_b=40000$, to quantitatively analyze the role of secondary motions on the mean flow structure. For that purpose we derive a generalized form of the identity of Fukagata, Iwamoto and Kasagi (FIK), which allows to quantify the effect of cross-stream convection on the mean streamwise velocity, wall shear stress and bulk friction coefficient. Secondary motions are found to contribute for about $6\%$ of total friction, and to act as a self-regulating mechanism of turbulence whereby wall shear stress nonuniformities induced by corners are equalized, and universality of the wall-normal velocity profiles is established. We also carry out numerical experiments whereby the secondary motions are artificially suppressed, in which case their equalizing role is partially taken by the turbulent stresses.

Abstract

Simple Summary: Our study aims to demonstrate and quantify the usefulness of three different AI models for lymph node involvement prediction in prostate cancer patients comparing the performance with current routinely used clinical nomograms. Knowing the lymph node involvement with accuracy and confidence can influence the type of surgical and therapeutic choice. PURPOSE: We aim to compare the performance of three different radiomics models (logistic regression (LR), random forest (RF), and support vector machine (SVM)) and clinical nomograms (Briganti, MSKCC, Yale, and Roach) for predicting lymph node involvement (LNI) in prostate cancer (PCa) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The retrospective study includes 95 patients who underwent mp-MRI and radical prostatectomy for PCa with pelvic lymphadenectomy. Imaging data (intensity in T2, DWI, ADC, and PIRADS), clinical data (age and pre-MRI PSA), histological data (Gleason score, TNM staging, histological type, capsule invasion, seminal vesicle invasion, and neurovascular bundle involvement), and clinical nomograms (Yale, Roach, MSKCC, and Briganti) were collected for each patient. Manual segmentation of the index lesions was performed for each patient using an open-source program (3D SLICER). Radiomic features were extracted for each segmentation using the Pyradiomics library for each sequence (T2, DWI, and ADC). The features were then selected and used to train and test three different radiomics models (LR, RF, and SVM) independently using ChatGPT software (v 4o). The coefficient value of each feature was calculated (significant value for coefficient ≥ ±0.5). The predictive performance of the radiomics models and clinical nomograms was assessed using accuracy and area under the curve (AUC) (significant value for p ≤ 0.05). Thus, the diagnostic accuracy between the radiomics and clinical models were compared. RESULTS: This study identified 343 features per patient (330 radiomics features and 13 clinical features). The most significant features were T2_nodulofirstordervariance and T2_nodulofirstorderkurtosis. The highest predictive performance was achieved by the RF model with DWI (accuracy 86%, AUC 0.89) and ADC (accuracy 89%, AUC 0.67). Clinical nomograms demonstrated satisfactory but lower predictive performance compared to the RF model in the DWI sequences. CONCLUSIONS: Among the prediction models developed using integrated data (radiomics and semantics), RF shows slightly higher diagnostic accuracy in terms of AUC compared to clinical nomograms in PCa lymph node involvement prediction. Abstract

This paper introduces a novel approach for designing a Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) system with LCC‐S compensation. Since WPT systems operate under resonant conditions, even small deviations of the components from the nominal values can result in a significant reduction of the power transferred to the load, and in an increment of the circulating currents, reducing the system efficiency. The design techniques available today in the literature provide a unique combination of passive components capable of transferring a certain power to the load. This is a limitation, because, in practice, there are several combinations that allow reaching the desired output power, but they are usually neglected because they are extremely difficult to compute analytically. For this reason, in this paper, the authors present an innovative design procedure that enables, through a Genetic Algorithm, the identification of multiple feasible combinations of the LCC‐S components capable of achieving the desired output power. Moreover, the authors evaluate the effects of the component tolerances on the output power to determine which combinations are more robust to component variations. This task is performed by calculating the probability that a particular combination yields the desired output power, once the tolerances have been considered, following a Monte Carlo approach. This information is utilized to decide whether it is possible to reduce the component quality (worsening the tolerance) without affecting the performance. Finally, an optimal solution granting both low‐cost and robustness against component tolerances can be individuated. 21. Heat transfer and wall temperature effects in shock wave turbulent boundary layer interactions

Abstract

Direct numerical simulations are carried out to investigate the effect of the wall temperature on the behavior of oblique shock-wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions at freestream Mach number $2.28$ and shock angle of the wedge generator $\varphi = 8^{\circ}$. Five values of the wall-to-recovery-temperature ratio ($T_w/T_r$) are considered, corresponding to cold, adiabatic and hot wall thermal conditions. We show that the main effect of cooling is to decrease the characteristic scales of the interaction in terms of upstream influence and extent of the separation bubble. The opposite behavior is observed in the case of heating, that produces a marked dilatation of the interaction region. The distribution of the Stanton number shows that a strong amplification of the heat transfer occurs across the interaction, and the maximum values of thermal and dynamic loads are found in the case of cold wall. The analysis reveals that the fluctuating heat flux exhibits a strong intermittent behavior, characterized by scattered spots with extremely high values compared to the mean. Furthermore, the analogy between momentum and heat transfer, typical of compressible, wall-bounded, equilibrium turbulent flows does not apply for most part of the interaction domain. The pre-multiplied spectra of the wall heat flux do not show any evidence of the influence of the low-frequency shock motion, and the primary mechanism for the generation of peak heating is found to be linked with the turbulence amplification in the interaction region., Comment: submitted to PRFluids

Abstract

Background: Patients with anorectal malformation (ARM) need long-term follow-up, in order to evaluate fecal continence; the main predictors of longer-term success are the type of ARM, associated anomalies and sacral integrity. Three-Dimensional High Resolution Anorectal Manometry (3D-HRAM) gives detailed information on pressure on the anal complex profile. Our objective was to analyze anal sphincter activity in ARM patients with 3D-HRAM establishing the correlation between manometric and clinical data. Methods: Forty ARM patients were submitted to 3D-HRAM: manometric, anatomical and clinical scores were correlated with each other and with the bowel management response (BM). Results: A positive correlation between all scores and types of ARM was found: in high ARM and in patients with spinal anomalies (regardless to ARM type) lower scores were reported and even after BM they did not achieve good continence. Conclusions: 3D-HRAM gives detailed data on the functional activity of the anal sphincter complex. Our study revealed a correlation between manometric parameters and clinical outcomes, confirming spinal malformations and ARM type as the most important prognostic risk factors for a bad outcome. Specific sphincteric defects can also be explored with manometry, allowing for tailored bowel management strategies.

Abstract

This paper proposes a new prognostic method capable of preventing catastrophic failures in Medium Voltage (MV) power cables. The main objective is the development of a monitoring system focused on the detection and localization of cable overtemperatures in underground distribution networks. The predictive analysis proposed here is based on a Multi-Layer neural network with Multi-Valued Neurons (MLMVN), which elaborates measurements of high frequency signals transmitted through Power Line Communication (PLC) devices. Therefore, the prognostic method does not require the introduction of additional components since the power line is already equipped with a communication system. This allows low intrusion and the possibility of monitoring power lines during their operation. Furthermore, the MLMVN-based classifier processes magnitude and phase of the received signals without preliminary coding steps and ensures a low computational cost. The main theoretical concept on which the predictive analysis is based is the detection of malfunctions starting from their effects on the cable parameters. For this reason, an RG7H1M1 cable has been experimentally characterized in the frequency range between 90 kHz and 1 MHz, both in nominal conditions and in overheating situations generated by means of a climatic chamber. The changes in the electrical parameters of the cable modify the transmitted signal and the monitoring system proposed here allows the identification and localization of the overheated section with high accuracy.
