Abstract

It has been demonstrated previously that electrons interact differently with chiral molecules depending on their polarization. For enantiomeric pure monolayers of heptahelicene, opposite asymmetries in spin polarization were reported and attributed to the so-called chirality-induced spin selectivity effect. However, these promising proof-of-concept photoemission experiments lack the angular and energy resolution that could provide the necessary insights into the mechanism of this phenomenon. In order to fill in the missing gaps, we provide a detailed spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of heptahelicene layers on a Cu(111) substrate. Throughout the large accessible energy and angle range, no chirality induced spin asymmetry in photoemission could be observed. Possible reasons for the absence of signatures of the spin-dependent electron transmission through the chiral molecular layer are briefly discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

5. RavenR v2.1.4: An open-source R package to support flexible hydrologic modelling

Abstract

In recent decades, advances in the flexibility and complexity of hydrologic models have enhanced their utility in scientific studies and practice alike. However, the increasing complexity of these tools leads to a number of challenges, including steep learning curves for new users and issues regarding the reproducibility of modelling studies. Here, we present the RavenR package, an R package that leverages the power of scripting to both enhance the usability of the Raven hydrologic modelling framework and provide complementary analyses that are useful for modellers. The RavenR package contains functions that may be useful in each step of the model-building process, particularly for preparing input files and analyzing model outputs. The utility of the RavenR package is demonstrated with the presentation of six use cases for a model of the Liard River basin in Canada. These use cases provide examples of visually reviewing the model configuration, preparing input files for observation and forcing data, simplifying the model discretization, performing realism checks on the model output, and evaluating the performance of the model. All of the use cases are fully reproducible, with additional reproducible examples of RavenR functions included with the package distribution itself. It is anticipated that the RavenR package will continue to evolve with the Raven project and will provide a useful tool to new and experienced users of Raven alike.

7. Growth Dynamics and Electron Reflectivity in Ultrathin Films of Chiral Heptahelicene on Metal (100) Surfaces Studied by Spin-Polarized Low Energy Electron Microscopy

Abstract

Interaction of electrons with chiral matter gives rise to interesting phenomena such as the chirality-induced spin selectivity. The interdependence of reflectivity of spin-polarized low energy electrons and the absolute handedness of chiral molecules is investigated. First, the growth of homochiral films of helical aromatic hydrocarbons, so-called helicenes, on a Cu(100) surface is studied by means of low energy electron microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy in ultrahigh vacuum. As soon as the coverage exceeds one monolayer, double-layer nucleation and growth is favored such that depletion in the first layer occurs. Spatially resolved work function measurements show that second-layer patches have a lower work function than first-layer areas. Reflectivity spectra of spin-polarized electrons do not show any asymmetry between homochiral films of the enantiomers. Laterally resolved work function measurements do not confirm work function differences such as those reported earlier for photoelectron studies of chiral peptide films on ferromagnetic substrates.

19. Glomustumore des Kopf-Hals-Bereiches - hat sich etwas geändert?

Abstract

Einleitung: Glomustumore sind seltene, meist gutartige, neuroendokrine Tumore, die aus den nicht chromaffinen Zellen entstehen und multifokal auftreten können. Je nach Lokalisation unterscheidet man Glomus caroticum-, jugulare-, tympanicum- oder vagale- Tumoren. Klinisch imponieren sie je nach Lokalisation mit Halsschwellung, Hörminderung mit pulssynchronem Ohrgeräusch oder Hirnnervenausfällen (IX-XI). Bedeutsam ist die Wahl der Therapie, insbesondere im Hinblick auf die Funktionserhaltung. Methode: I.R. einer monozentrischen Studie wurden die Verläufe und histolog. Befunde von Pat. ausgewertet, die im 10-Jahreszeitraum von 2006-2016 wegen eines Glomustumors behandelt wurden. Besonderes Augenmerk wurde auf die Lokalisation, die Therapiewahl, die postop. Rate an Nervenausfällen, die histolog. Charakteristika und die Rezidivquote gerichtet. Ergebnisse: Bei 16 Pat. wurde ein Glomustumor diagnostiziert. Bis auf einen Pat. wurden alle einer Operation unterzogen. Von den 15 operierten Pat. kam es bei 4 Pat. zu postop. Funktionsausfällen unterschiedlicher Ausprägung. Die Paragangliome waren meist in der Carotisgabel lokalisiert. Es folgten die Paukenhöhle und das Foramen jugulare. Histologisch konnten verschiedene Subtypen identifiziert werden. Es zeigte sich in 3 Fällen ein destruierendes Wachstum. Histologisch imponierten jedoch keine Malignitätszeichen. Bei keinem Pat. kam es zu einem Rezidiv oder zur Metastasierung. Schlussfolgerung: Glomustumore werden meist einer operativen Tumorresektion zugeführt. Die Therapiewahl muss individuell erfolgen und die Tumorgröße mit den zu erwartenden Funktionsausfällen sowie das Alter des Pat. und die Wachstumstendenz berücksichtigen, um ggf. ein konservatives Vorgehen vorzuziehen.
