Dynamische Beanspruchungen können das Ergebnis natürlicher oder vom Menschen verursachter Aktivitäten sein. Partikeleigenschaften wie Korngröße, Korngrößenverteilung, Mineralogie, Feinkorngehalt und Kornform spielen hierbei eine wichtige Rolle und beeinflussen das mechanische Verhalten der Böden. In dieser Arbeit wird der Einfluss verschiedener Partikeleigenschaften wie Korngröße, Korngrößenverteilung und Kornform auf das inhärente, statische, zyklische und dynamische Verhalten granularer Materialien untersucht. Neben der Kornform wird der Einfluss der Korngrößenparameter auf die Lagerungsdichte von granularen Böden untersucht. Darüber hinaus wurde eine Reihe von Triaxial- und Resonanzsäulenversuchen unter verschiedenen Randbedingungen an drei Materialien mit sehr unterschiedlichen durchgeführt, um den Einfluss der Kornform auf verschiedene Bodeneigenschaften zu quantifizieren. This thesis is concerned with new numerical and algorithmic tools for flows with pressure and shear dependent viscosity together with the necessary background of the generalized Navier-Stokes equations. In general the viscosity of a material can be constant, e.g. water and this kind of fluid is called as Newtonian fluid. However the flow can be complicated for quasi-Newtonian fluid, where the viscosity can depend on some physical quantity. For example, the viscosity of Bingham fluid is a function of the shear rate. Moreover even further complications can arise when the dependencies of both shear rate and pressure occur for the viscosity as in the case of the granular materials, e.g. Poliquen model. The Navier-Stokes equations in primitive variables (velocity-pressure) are regarded as the privilege answer to incorporate these phenomena. The modification of the viscous stresses leads to generalized Navier-Stokes equations extending the range of their validity to such flow. The resulting equations are mathematically more complex than the Navier-Stokes equations and several problems arise from the numerical point of view. Firstly, the difficulty of approximating incompressible velocity fields and secondly, poor conditioning and possible lack of differentiability of the involved nonlinear functions due to the material laws. The difficulty related to the approximation of incompressible velocity fields is treated by applying the conforming Stokes element Q2/P1 and the lack of differentiability is taken care of by regularization. Then the continuous Newton method as linearization technique is applied and the method consists of working directly on the variational integrals. Next the corresponding continuous Jacobian operators are derived and consequently a convergence rate of the nonlinear iterations independent of the mesh refinement is achieved. This continuous approach is advantageous: Firstly the explicit accessibility of the Jacobian allows a robust method with respect to the starting guess and secondly it avoids the delicate task of choosing the step-length which is required for divided differences approaches. We denote the full Jacobian matrix on the discrete level by A and separate it into two parts: A1 and A2 corresponding to Fixed point and Newton method respectively. A fundamental issue for the continuous Newton method arises when the problem is not ready for it at the initial state due to the poor condition of the 'bad-part' A2 of the Jacobian. Although the Newton method is popular for its local quadratic convergence behavior, however the solver may show unpredictable and undesirable divergent behavior if A2 is poor conditioned. This particular difficulty is handled by our Adaptive Newton method, where we introduce a charateristic function f(Qn), which depends solely on the relative residual change Qn and controls the weighing parameter δn for the 'bad-part' A2 resulting in the swinging back and forth of the solver between Fixed point and Newton state. Finally the new Adaptive Newton method is validated for the Bingham fluid for the benchmark geometry Flow around cylinder and a test case of 2D Couette flow for (modified) Poliquen model having the scope of real world applications is studied to fulfill the objective need of performance.

The macroscopic behaviour of granular matter in contrast to fluids and solids is often insufficiently understood not least because poor visual accessibility hinders the analysis. Computer simulations are capable of revealing the internal dynamics not directly accessible in the experiment but are computationally extremely expensive since no unified model equations exist homogenizing the dynamics of the individual particles. Unfortunately, the time and length scales of relevant problems are quickly beyond the reach of today's simulation tools. This thesis aims to address these issues by providing models and algorithms efficiently harnessing the power of today's supercomputers and at the same time extending the reachable scales by hiding the collision micro-dynamics and improving the convergence rate of the iterative solver and time coherence of the solutions. To hide the collision micro-dynamics hard contact models are employed leading to non-smooth trajectories and discontinuous velocities of the particles. The convergence rate and time coherence are impeded by the non-uniqueness of the contact reactions. Hence, a new friction model is introduced that can be viewed as a regularization of the Coulomb friction model exhibiting unique one-contact solutions. Another regularization, stiffening contact compliances in multi-contact problems, identifies the contact reactions of weighted minimum norm as physically meaningful unique solutions. Finally, an iterative solver based on the non-smooth contact dynamics method is parallelized for distributed-memory architectures. The parallelization uses a sophisticated protocol supporting the processes in deciding robustly upon responsibilities such as contact treatment and position integration while minimizing communication overhead. The parallel efficiency is assessed in strong- and weak-scaling experiments on three clusters including Juqueen and SuperMUC, two of today's largest supercomputers. The simulations are of unprecedented scale: in the order of 10 billion non-spherical particles and contacts. Aside from scaling experiments the versatility is demonstrated using the examples of a large-scale horizontal shaker filled with sharp-edged granular matter and rapid granular channel flows. Though the limits of non-smooth granular matter simulations are pushed considerably, the dependence of the convergence rate of the non-smooth contact dynamics method on the number of unknowns remains an open problem. Das makroskopische Verhalten granularer Materie ist - im Gegensatz zu dem von Fluiden und Festkörpern - häufig nur unzureichend verstanden. Dies rührt nicht zuletzt daher, dass die Analyse durch die schlechte visuelle Zugänglichkeit erschwert wird. Computersimulationen vermögen die im Experiment nicht direkt zugängliche interne Dynamik preiszugeben, sind aber extrem rechenaufwendig, da keine allgemeingültigen Modellgleichungen existieren, welche die Dynamik der einzelnen Partikel homogenisieren. Allerdings liegen die Zeit- und Längenskalen relevanter Probleme schnell außerhalb der Erreichbarkeit heutiger Simulationsprogramme. Ziel der Arbeit ist es, diese Aspekte durch die Entwicklung von Modellen und Algorithmen anzugehen, welche die Rechenleistung heutiger Supercomputer nutzbar machen und zugleich die erreichbaren Skalen erweitern. Dies soll realisiert werden, indem die Mikrodynamik der Kollisionen ausgeblendet wird und die Konvergenzrate des iterativen Lösers sowie die zeitliche Kohärenz der Lösungen verbessert werden. Um die Mikrodynamik der Kollisionen auszublenden, werden harte Kontaktmodelle eingesetzt, welche auf nichtglatte Trajektorien und unstetige Geschwindigkeiten der Partikel führen. Konvergenzrate und zeitliche Kohärenz werden durch die Uneindeutigkeit der Kontaktreaktionen verschlechtert. Daher wird ein neues Reibungsmodell eingeführt, welches als Regularisierung der Coulombschen Reibung betrachtet werden kann und eindeutige Einkontaktlösungen aufweist. Eine weitere Regularisierung, welche Kontaktnachgiebigkeiten in Mehrkontaktproblemen verfestigt, identifiziert die Kontaktreaktion mit minimaler gewichteter Norm als physikalisch bedeutsame eindeutige Lösung. Abschließend wird ein iteratives Lösungsverfahren, welches auf der "non-smooth contact dynamics"-Methode basiert, für Architekturen mit verteiltem Speicher parallelisiert. Die Parallelisierung verwendet ein durchdachtes Protokoll, welches die Prozesse darin unterstützt, Zuständigkeiten - wie beispielsweise Kontaktbehandlung oder Positionsintegration - robust zu entscheiden bei gleichzeitiger Reduktion des Kommunikationsaufwandes. Die parallele Effizienz wird in starken und schwachen Skalierungsexperimenten auf drei Clustern - einschließlich Juqueen und SuperMUC, zwei der größten heutigen Supercomputer - ausgewertet. Die Größenordnung der Simulationen erreicht ein bislang ungekanntes Ausmaß: 10 Milliarden nicht-sphärische Partikel und Kontakte. Abgesehen von den Skalierungsexperimenten wird die Vielseitigkeit anhand eines großskaligen horizontalen Rüttlers demonstriert, welcher mit scharfkantiger granularer Materie gefüllt ist und anhand rapider granularer Kanalströmungen. Obwohl die Simulationsmöglichkeiten nichtglatter granularer Materie deutlich erweitert werden, bleibt die Abhängigkeit der Konvergenzrate der "non-smooth contact dynamics"-Methode von der Anzahl der Unbekannten ein ungelöstes Problem.

In dieser Arbeit werden zwei zueinander komplementäre Fälle von Mikrostrukturen in Materialien vorgestellt: Bildung von Rotationsstrukturen in granularen Medien und das Entzwillingen in martensitischem Gefüge. Für den ersten Fall werden die Gegendrehungen von Partikeln untersucht, und eine Interaktion Energiepotenzial postuliert. Die mit diesem Anteil erweiterte Cosseratenergie ergibt eine nicht-quasikonvexe Funktion, die es erlaubt die Entstehung von Mikrostrukturen in Verschiebungen und Rotationen zu simulieren. Eine exakte Formulierung einer quasikonvexen Hülle konnte durch Anwendung variationeller Methoden entwickelt werden. Für den zweiten Fall wurde mittels Relaxationsmethoden ein analytischer Ausdruck für die teil-relaxierte Energie gefunden. In beiden Fällen werden die Modelle numerisch mit der Finite-Elemente-Methode implementiert. This thesis presents an investigation of two complementary cases of material microstructures: formation of rotational microstructures in granular media, and the detwinning of martensitic microstructure. In the first case, we study the counter rotations of particles that enable us to propose an interaction energy potential contributing to material strain energy. Enriching the Cosserat energy by adding this interaction potential results in a non-quasiconvex function, thus giving rise to the development of microstructures occurring both in the displacements and microrotations. It turns out to be possible to derive an exact quasiconvex envelope of the potential by employing the direct methods in the calculus of variations. In the second case, we employ the relaxation techniques to compute an analytical expression for the partially relaxed energy corresponding to two-well non-convex energy potential. In both the cases the models are implemented numerically using finite element method.

Gegenstand der vorliegenden Dissertation ist die experimentelle Untersuchung der dynamischen Aspekte eines feuchten Granulats. Das erste Kapitel behandelt dabei die Dynamik einer Flüssigkeit in einem Granulat. Die sich hierbei einstellenden Flüssigkeitsstrukturen sind unter anderem für die Dynamik der Partikel von wesentlicher Bedeutung. Diese Partikel-Dynamik wird im zweiten Kapitel besprochen. Dabei wird zunächst auf die Scherfestigkeit eines feuchten Granulats eingegangen und anschließend auf die Fluidisierung sowie die Segregation.

This dissertation presents a new type of NMR-Sensor called the Bar Magnet-MOUSE. It consists of a simple bar magnet producing the static B0-field of the sensor and an oscillating circuit including a rf-coil to produce the orthogonal B1-field components. The complete history of the development of the new type of sensor is described, starting with the layout of the magnet system and a suitable pole piece, followed by the design of three different rf-coils, the prequalification of the prototype and ending with the optimized production model. Three different sensors for three different applications are shown: a) a sensor, which is insensitive to external noise, for relaxation time measurements in an industrial environment, b) a sensor to measure diffusion, c) a sensor to investigate thin samples. The specific applications for the sensors b) and c) are shown: In the case of the diffusion sensor the constant relaxation-time method was adapted to and used in the highly inhomogeneous B0- and B1-field for the first time. The method was used to investigate diffusion in complex solvent polymer systems and the anisotropie of diffusion in tendom. Sensor c) was used to investigate aging processes of the surface of elastomer samples to build a chemical sensor by fixing a latex membrane to the surface of the rf-coil. The sensor was used to detect swelling and drying processes of the membrane. Additionally drying processes of adhesives where measured. The last chapter describes the first application of the NMR-MOUSE® in granular media. It is shown, that the NMR-MOUSE® can be used to detect the phase transitions of a fluidized bed reactor.
