Objective: These experiments address concerns that motor vehicles in electric engine mode are so quiet that they pose a risk to pedestrians, especially those with visual impairments.Background: The "quiet car" issue has focused on hybrid and electric vehicles, although it also applies to internal combustion engine vehicles. Previous research has focused on detectability of vehicles, mostly in quiet settings. Instead, we focused on the functional ability to perceive vehicle motion paths.Method: Participants judged whether simulated vehicles were traveling straight or turning, with emphasis on the impact of background traffic sound.Results: In quiet, listeners made the straight-or-turn judgment soon enough in the vehicle's path to be useful for deciding whether to start crossing the street. This judgment is based largely on sound level cues rather than the spatial direction of the vehicle. With even moderate background traffic sound, the ability to tell straight from turn paths is severely compromised. The signal-to-noise ratio needed for the straight-or-turn judgment is much higher than that needed to detect a vehicle.Conclusion: Although a requirement for a minimum vehicle sound level might enhance detection of vehicles in quiet settings, it is unlikely that this requirement would contribute to pedestrian awareness of vehicle movements in typical traffic settings with many vehicles present.Application: The findings are relevant to deliberations by government agencies and automobile manufacturers about standards for minimum automobile sounds and, more generally, for solutions to pedestrians' needs for information about traffic, especially for pedestrians with sensory impairments. Otitis media with effusion (OME) often results in hearing loss for children with the condition. In order to provide appropriate and effective audiologic management, it is important to understand the impact of OME on speech recognition ability when hearing loss is present. This study examined the speech recognition abilities of normal-hearing six- and seven-year-old children (n = 12) and adults (n = 12) using monosyllabic words and nonsense syllables presented at two levels of simulated conductive hearing loss characteristic of OME. Average speech recognition scores decreased as the degree of simulated conductive hearing loss increased. Both age groups scored significantly poorer for nonsense syllables than for monosyllabic words. In general, the children performed more poorly than the adults with the exception of the easiest listening condition for word stimuli. Furthermore, children appeared less able than adults to use their knowledge of familiar words to improve performance. These findings suggest that rehabilitative strategies may best be focused on combining familiarization techniques and amplification options. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The objective of this study was to analyze device safety and clinical outcomes of inguinal hernia repair with the GORE SYNECOR Intraperitoneal Biomaterial device, a hybrid composite mesh., Methods: This retrospective case review analyzed device/procedure endpoints beyond 1 year in patients treated for inguinal hernia repair with the device. Three objectives were evaluated: procedural endpoint-incidence through 30 days of surgical site infection, surgical site occurrence (SSO), ileus, readmission, reoperation, and death; device endpoint-serious device incidence of mesh erosion, infection, excision/removal, exposure, migration, shrinkage, device-related bowel obstruction and fistula, and hernia recurrence through 12 months; and patient-reported outcomes of the bulge, physical symptoms, and pain., Results: A total of 157 patients (mean age: 67±13 y) with 201 inguinal hernias (mean size: 5.1±5 cm 2 ) were included. Laparoscopic approach and bridging repair were performed in 99.4% of patients. All device location was preperitoneal. No procedure-related adverse events within 30 days were reported. No surgical site infection or SSO events or device-related hernia recurrence occurred through 12 months. Procedure-related serious adverse events occurred in 6 patients; 5 recurrent inguinal hernias (at 1 and 2 y) and 1 scrotal hematoma (at 6 mo). Through 24 months, no SSO events requiring procedural intervention occurred. Through 50 months, 6 (2.98%) patients had confirmed hernia recurrence and 4 (1.99%) patients had hernia reoperation. The patient-reported outcome for pain was reported by 7.9% (10/126) of patients who completed the questionnaire., Conclusions: In this study, inguinal hernia repair with the hybrid composite mesh was successful in most patients and the rate of recurrence was low, further supporting the long-term safety and device performance., Competing Interests: J.G.L. has received research support and speaking and teaching honorarium from W. Background: One-year device safety and clinical outcomes of ventral hernia repair with the GORE® SYNECOR Intraperitoneal Biomaterial, a hybrid composite mesh was evaluated., Methods: This retrospective, multicenter, case review analyzed device/procedure endpoints and patient-reported outcomes in patients treated for hernia repair ≥ 1 year from study enrollment., Results: Included were 459 patients (with 469 ventral hernias) with a mean age of 58 ± 15 years; 77.1% met Ventral Hernia Working Group 2 (VHWG2) classification. Mean hernia size was 18.9 cm 2 and 57.3% of hernias were incisional. Laparoscopic or robotic approach was utilized in 95.4% of patients. Mesh location was intraperitoneal for 75.6% and bridging repair was performed in 57.3%. Procedure-related adverse events within 30-days occurred in 5.0% of patients and included surgical site infection (SSI), surgical site occurrence (SSO), ileus, readmission, and re-operation. Procedure-related SSI or SSO events were 3.8% through 12 months. SSO events requiring procedural intervention (SSOPI) were 2.6% through 24 months. Four patients (0.9%) had confirmed hernia recurrence through the study (the mean follow-up was 32-months, range 14-53 months). Subgroup comparisons were conducted for all type recurrence; only diabetes was found to be statistically significant (p = .0506)., Conclusion: In this analysis, ventral hernia repair with hybrid, composite mesh results in successful outcomes in most patients. This study represents a heterogeneous patient population undergoing repair using various approaches, mesh fixation, and mesh placement locations. Objectives: The objective of this study was to characterize the acoustics of the home environment of young children with hearing loss. Specifically, we aimed to quantify the range of speech levels, noise levels, and signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) encountered by children with hearing loss in their homes., Design: Nine families participated in the study. The children with hearing loss in these families were between 2 and 5 years of age. Acoustic recordings were made in the children's homes over one weekend (Saturday and Sunday) using Language ENvironmental Analysis (LENA) recorders. These recordings were analyzed using LENA's proprietary software to determine the range of speech and noise levels in the child's home. A custom Matlab program analyzed the LENA output to estimate the SNRs in the children's homes., Results: The average SNR encountered by children with hearing loss in our sample was approximately +7.9 dB SNR. It is important to note that our analyses revealed that approximately 84% of the SNRs experienced by these children with hearing loss were below the +15 dB SNR recommended by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association. Averaged across families, speech and noise levels were 70.1 and 62.2 C-weighted decibels, respectively., Conclusions: These data show that, for much of the time, young children with hearing loss are forced to listen under suboptimal conditions in their home environments. This has important implications as listening under these conditions could negatively affect learning opportunities for young children with hearing loss. To mitigate these potential negative effects, the use of assistive listening devices that improve the SNR (e.g., remote microphone systems) should be considered for use at home by young children with hearing loss.

During a typical communication exchange, both auditory and visual cues contribute to speech comprehension. The influence of vision on speech perception can be measured behaviorally using a task where incongruent auditory and visual speech stimuli are paired to induce perception of a novel token reflective of multisensory integration (i.e., the McGurk effect). This effect is temporally constrained in adults, with illusion perception decreasing as the temporal offset between the auditory and visual stimuli increases. Here, we used the McGurk effect to investigate the development of the temporal characteristics of audiovisual speech binding in 7-24 year-olds. Surprisingly, results indicated that although older participants perceived the McGurk illusion more frequently, no age-dependent change in the temporal boundaries of audiovisual speech binding was observed., (Copyright © 2016. The benefit of spatial separation for talkers in a multi-talker environment is well documented. However, few studies have examined the effect of talker motion on speech recognition. In the current study, we evaluated the effects of (1) motion of the target or distracters, (2) a priori information about the target and distracter spatial configurations, and (3) target and distracter location. In total, seventeen young adults with normal hearing were tested in a large anechoic chamber in two experiments. In Experiment 1, seven stimulus conditions were tested using the Coordinate Response Measure (Bolia et al., 2000) speech corpus, in which subjects were required to report the key words in a target sentence presented simultaneously with two distracter sentences. As in previous studies, there was a significant improvement in key word identification for conditions in which the target and distracters were spatially separated as compared to the co-located conditions. In addition, 1) motion of either talker or distracter resulted in improved performance compared to stationary presentation (talker motion yielded significantly better performance than distracter motion) 2) a priori information regarding stimulus configuration was not beneficial, and 3) performance was significantly better with key words at 0° azimuth as compared to -60° (on the listener's left). Experiment 2 included two additional conditions designed to assess whether the benefit of motion observed in Experiment 1 was due to the motion itself or to the fact that the motion conditions introduced small spatial separations in the target and distracter key words. Results showed that small spatial separations (on the order of 5-8°) resulted in improved performance (relative to co-located key words) whether the sentences were moving or stationary. These results suggest that in the presence of distracting messages, motion of either target or distracters and/or small spatial separation of the key words may be beneficial for sound source segregation and thus for improved speech recognition., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier B.V. Objectives: Binaural hearing results in a number of listening advantages relative to monaural hearing, including enhanced hearing sensitivity and better speech understanding in adverse listening conditions. These advantages are facilitated in part by the ability to detect and use interaural cues within the central auditory system. Binaural hearing for children with Down syndrome could be impacted by multiple factors including, structural anomalies within the peripheral and central auditory system, alterations in synaptic communication, and chronic otitis media with effusion. However, binaural hearing capabilities have not been investigated in these children. This study tested the hypothesis that children with Down syndrome experience less binaural benefit than typically developing peers., Design: Participants included children with Down syndrome aged 6 to 16 years (n = 11), typically developing children aged 3 to 12 years (n = 46), adults with Down syndrome (n = 3), and adults with no known neurological delays (n = 6). Inclusionary criteria included normal to near-normal hearing sensitivity. Two tasks were used to assess binaural ability. Masking level difference (MLD) was calculated by comparing threshold for a 500-Hz pure-tone signal in 300-Hz wide Gaussian noise for N0S0 and N0Sπ signal configurations. Binaural intelligibility level difference was calculated using simulated free-field conditions. Speech recognition threshold was measured for closed-set spondees presented from 0-degree azimuth in speech-shaped noise presented from 0-, 45- and 90-degree azimuth, respectively. The developmental ability of children with Down syndrome was estimated and information regarding history of otitis media was obtained for all child participants via parent survey., Results: Individuals with Down syndrome had higher masked thresholds for pure-tone and speech stimuli than typically developing individuals. Children with Down syndrome had significantly smaller MLDs than typically developing children. Adults with Down syndrome and control adults had similar MLDs. Similarities in simulated spatial release from masking were observed for all groups for the experimental parameters used in this study. No association was observed for any measure of binaural ability and developmental age for children with Down syndrome. Similar group psychometric functions were observed for children with Down syndrome and typically developing children in most instances, suggesting that attentiveness and motivation contributed equally to performance for both groups on most tasks., Conclusions: The binaural advantages afforded to typically developing children, such as enhanced hearing sensitivity in noise, were not as robust for children with Down syndrome in this study. Children with Down syndrome experienced less binaural benefit than typically developing peers for some stimuli, suggesting that they could require more favorable signal-to-noise ratios to achieve optimal performance in some adverse listening conditions. The reduced release from masking observed for children with Down syndrome could represent a delay in ability rather than a deficit that persists into adulthood. This could have implications for the planning of interventions for individuals with Down syndrome.

The purpose of this study was to investigate horizontal plane localization and interaural time difference (ITD) thresholds for 14 adult cochlear implant recipients with hearing preservation in the implanted ear. Localization to broadband noise was assessed in an anechoic chamber with a 33-loudspeaker array extending from -90 to +90°. Three listening conditions were tested including bilateral hearing aids, bimodal (implant + contralateral hearing aid) and best aided (implant + bilateral hearing aids). ITD thresholds were assessed, under headphones, for low-frequency stimuli including a 250-Hz tone and bandpass noise (100-900 Hz). Localization, in overall rms error, was significantly poorer in the bimodal condition (mean: 60.2°) as compared to both bilateral hearing aids (mean: 46.1°) and the best-aided condition (mean: 43.4°). ITD thresholds were assessed for the same 14 adult implant recipients as well as 5 normal-hearing adults. ITD thresholds were highly variable across the implant recipients ranging from the range of normal to ITDs not present in real-world listening environments (range: 43 to over 1600 μs). ITD thresholds were significantly correlated with localization, the degree of interaural asymmetry in low-frequency hearing, and the degree of hearing preservation related benefit in the speech reception threshold (SRT). These data suggest that implant recipients with hearing preservation in the implanted ear have access to binaural cues and that the sensitivity to ITDs is significantly correlated with localization and degree of preserved hearing in the implanted ear., (Copyright © 2014. Binaural interference refers to the phenomenon in which the potency of binaural cues conveyed by a "target" stimulus occupying one spectral region is degraded by the presence of an "interferer" stimulus occupying a spectral region remote from the target. It is typified by conditions in which thresholds for detection of interaural temporal difference conveyed by a high-frequency target are elevated when the target is accompanied by a spectrally remote low-frequency interferer. This study explored effects of temporal relations between targets and interferers on binaural interference. In the first experiment, duration by which the interferer preceded and/or trailed the target (onset and offset "fringes") was varied. Results indicated binaural interference decreased with total duration of the temporal fringe, but did not depend on whether that duration was composed of onset, offset, or onset + offset fringes. In the second experiment, binaural interference was measured as a function of the interstimulus interval (ISI) between the two presentations of the target. Results indicated that shorter ISIs increased thresholds in both the interferer and no-interferer conditions, but did not affect binaural interference. These results suggest that the mechanisms underlying the effects of manipulations of the interferer temporal fringe and manipulation of the ISI are essentially independent.

Measurement of sensitivity to differences in the rate of change of auditory signal parameters is complicated by confounds among duration, extent, and velocity of the changing signal. Dooley and Moore [(1988) J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 84(4), 1332-1337] proposed a method for measuring sensitivity to rate of change using a duration discrimination task. They reported improved duration discrimination when an additional intensity or frequency change cue was present. The current experiments were an attempt to use this method to measure sensitivity to the rate of change in intensity and spatial position. Experiment 1 investigated whether duration discrimination was enhanced when additional cues of rate of intensity change, rate of spatial position change, or both were provided. Experiment 2 determined whether participant listening experience or the testing environment influenced duration discrimination task performance. Experiment 3 assessed whether duration discrimination could be used to measure sensitivity to rates of changes in intensity and spatial position for stimuli with lower rates of change, as well as emphasizing the constancy of the velocity cue. Results of these experiments showed that duration discrimination was impaired rather than enhanced by the additional velocity cues. The findings are discussed in terms of the demands of listening to concurrent changes along multiple auditory dimensions.

In an anechoic chamber the minimum audible angle (MAA) was measured in seven normal-hearing adults for a narrow band of noise centered at 4000 Hz (target). In the absence of an interfering stimulus, the average MAA was 2.1°. When a low-frequency interferer (a narrow band of noise centered at 500 Hz) was pulsed on and off with the target from directly in front of the subject, the average MAA was significantly elevated (13.4°). However, if the interferer was continuously present, or if it consisted of two independent noises presented from ±90°, interference was much reduced. The interference effect was asymmetric: a high-frequency interferer did not result in elevation of MAA threshold for a low-frequency target. These results are similar to those that have been extensively reported for stimuli under headphones [Bernstein and Trahiotis (1995). J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 98, 155-163]. These data are consistent with the notion that interference from a spectrally remote low-frequency interferer occurs in the free field to the extent that the target and interferer are fused into a single perceptual object. If cues are provided that promote perceptual segregation (such as temporal onset differences or spatial location differences), the interference is reduced or eliminated.

Objectives: The main purpose of the study was to measure thresholds for interaural time differences (ITDs) and interaural level differences (ILDs) for acoustically presented noise signals in adults with bilateral cochlear implants (CIs). A secondary purpose was to assess the correlation between the ILD and ITD thresholds and error scores in a horizontal-plane localization task, to test the hypothesis that localization by individuals with bilateral implants is mediated by the processing of ILD cues., Design: Eleven adults, all postlingually deafened and all bilaterally fitted with MED-EL COMBI 40+ CIs, were tested in ITD and ILD discrimination tasks in which signals were presented acoustically through headphones that fit over their two devices. The stimulus was a 200-msec burst of Gaussian noise bandpass filtered from 100 to 4000 Hz. A two-interval forced-choice adaptive procedure was used in which the subject had to respond on each trial whether the lateral positions of the two sound images (with the interaural difference favoring the left and right sides in the two intervals) moved from left-to-right or right-to-left., Results: In agreement with previously reported data, ITD thresholds for the subjects with bilateral implants were poor. The best threshold was approximately 400 microsec, and only five of 11 subjects tested achieved thresholds <1000 microsec. In contrast, ILD thresholds were relatively good; mean threshold was 3.8 dB with the initial compression circuit on the implant devices activated and 1.9 dB with the compression deactivated. The ILD and ITD thresholds were higher than previously reported thresholds obtained with direct electrical stimulation (generally, <1.0 dB and 100 to 200 microsec, respectively). When the data from two outlying subjects were omitted, ILD thresholds were highly correlated with total error score in a horizontal-plane localization task, computed for sources near midline (r = 0.87, p < 0.01)., Conclusions: The higher ILD and ITD thresholds obtained in this study with acoustically presented signals (when compared with prior data with direct electrical stimulation) can be attributed-at least partially-to the signal processing carried out by the CI in the former case. The processing strategy effectively leaves only envelope information as a basis for ITD discrimination, which, for the acoustically presented noise stimuli, is mainly coded in the onset information. The operation of the compression circuit reduces the ILDs in the signal, leading to elevated ILD thresholds for the acoustically presented signals in this condition. The large magnitude of the ITD thresholds indicates that ITDs could not have contributed to the performance in the horizontal-plane localization task. Overall, the results suggest that for subjects using bilateral implants, localization of noise signals is mediated entirely by ILD cues, with little or no contribution from ITD information.

The purpose of this investigation was to determine the impact of commonly recommended cochlear implant (CI) speech processor placements on microphone output both with and without single channel front-end compression. The impact of this compression use on interaural level difference (ILD) magnitude was also evaluated for the ear-level position. Finally, pilot localization data collected with and without single channel front-end compression was collected on seven bilateral cochlear implant recipients. The results revealed that differences in signal audibility due to clinical placement of CI speech processors in ear, shoulder, and collar positions can at least partially be offset through the use of front-end compression. These data also revealed that compression impacted ILD cues. Preliminary data indicated that some bilaterally implanted subjects were able to take advantage of the enhanced ILD cues when compression was turned off, while other bilaterally implanted subjects did not localize better in the compression-off condition.

This study investigated the use of reduced order head related impulse response (HRIR) models to improve the computational efficiency in acoustic virtual displays. State space models of varying order were generated from zero-elevation HRIRs using a singular value decomposition technique. A source identification experiment was conducted under anechoic conditions in which three subjects were required to localize sounds in the front horizontal plane. The sounds were either (1) real sources (emitted by individual loudspeakers in a semi-circular array), (2) virtual sources generated from the original HRIRs, or (3) virtual sources generated using reduced order state space models. All virtual sources were created by simultaneous activation of two loudspeakers at +/- 30 degrees using a virtual source imaging technique based on either the measured or modeled HRIRs. The errors in the perceived direction of the virtual sources generated from the reduced order models were compared to errors in localization using the original HRIRs. The results demonstrate that a very significant reduction in model size can be achieved without significantly affecting the fidelity of the virtual display of horizontally placed sources.

To determine the effect of asymmetrical signal degradation on binaural speech recognition, 28 children and 14 adults were administered a sentence recognition task amidst multitalker babble. There were 3 listening conditions: (a) monaural, with mild degradation in 1 ear; (b) binaural, with mild degradation in both ears (symmetric degradation); and (c) binaural, with mild degradation in one ear and severe degradation in the other ear (asymmetric degradation). Sentences and babble were degraded digitally to simulate mild and severe cochlear hearing loss. All participants demonstrated significant binaural advantage (average of 7 dB) when listening to symmetrically degraded signals as compared to when listening monaurally. In contrast, adults and children achieved little or no binaural benefit, on average, when listening to asymmetrically degraded signals. Moreover, overall performance of the adults was significantly worse when listening to binaural asymmetrically degraded signals than when listening to monaural signals, thus demonstrating evidence of binaural interference. In contrast to our original speculations, however, children did not show an overall demonstration of binaural interference. Relative performance in the binaural-asymmetric and the monaural conditions was not influenced by which ear (right or left) received the more degraded signal.

Minimum audible angle (MAA) and minimum audible movement angle (MAMA) thresholds were measured for stimuli in horizontal, vertical, and diagonal (60 degrees) planes. A pseudovirtual technique was employed in which signals were recorded through KEMAR's ears and played back to subjects through insert earphones. Thresholds were obtained for wideband, high-pass, and low-pass noises. Only 6 of 20 subjects obtained wideband vertical-plane MAAs less than 10 degrees, and only these 6 subjects were retained for the complete study. For all three filter conditions thresholds were lowest in the horizontal plane, slightly (but significantly) higher in the diagonal plane, and highest for the vertical plane. These results were similar in magnitude and pattern to those reported by Perrott and Saberi [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 87, 1728-1731 (1990)] and Saberi and Perrott [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 88, 2639-2644 (1990)], except that these investigators generally found that thresholds for diagonal planes were as good as those for the horizontal plane. The present results are consistent with the hypothesis that diagonal-plane performance is based on independent contributions from a horizontal-plane system (sensitive to interaural differences) and a vertical-plane system (sensitive to pinna-based spectral changes). Measurements of the stimuli recorded through KEMAR indicated that sources presented from diagonal planes can produce larger interaural level differences (ILDs) in certain frequency regions than would be expected based on the horizontal projection of the trajectory. Such frequency-specific ILD cues may underlie the very good performance reported in previous studies for diagonal spatial resolution. Subjects in the present study could apparently not take advantage of these cues in the diagonal-plane condition, possibly because they did not externalize the images to their appropriate positions in space or possibly because of the absence of a patterned visual field.

The purpose of this study was to determine how well humans localize sound sources in the horizontal plane while wearing protective headgear with and without hearing protection. In a source identification task, a stimulus was presented from 1 of 20 loudspeakers arrayed in a semicircular arc, and participants stated which loudspeaker emitted the sound. Each participant was tested in 8 conditions involving various combinations of wearing a Kevlar army helmet and two types of earplugs. Testing was conducted at each of 2 orientations (frontal and lateral). In the frontal orientation, overall error was slightly greater in all protected conditions than in the bare-head control condition. In the lateral orientation, overall error score in the protected conditions was substantially and significantly greater than in the bare-head control conditions. Most errors in the lateral orientation were accounted for by front-back confusions, indicating that the protective devices disrupted high-frequency spectral cues that are the basis for discriminating front from back sound sources. The results have practical implications for the use of protective headgear and earplugs in industrial or military environments where localization of critical sounds is important.

Measures of monaural temporal processing and binaural sensitivity were obtained from 12 young (mean age = 26.1 years) and 12 elderly (mean age = 70.9 years) adults with clinically normal hearing (pure-tone thresholds < or = 20 dB HL from 250 to 6000 Hz). Monaural temporal processing was measured by gap detection thresholds. Binaural sensitivity was measured by interaural time difference (ITD) thresholds. Gap and ITD thresholds were obtained at three sound levels (4, 8, or 16 dB above individual threshold). Subjects were also tested on two measures of speech perception, a masking level difference (MLD) task, and a syllable identification/discrimination task that included phonemes varying in voice onset time (VOT). Elderly listeners displayed poorer monaural temporal analysis (higher gap detection thresholds) and poorer binaural processing (higher ITD thresholds) at all sound levels. There were significant interactions between age and sound level, indicating that the age difference was larger at lower stimulus levels. Gap detection performance was found to correlate significantly with performance on the ITD task for young, but not elderly adult listeners. Elderly listeners also performed more poorly than younger listeners on both speech measures; however, there was no significant correlation between psychoacoustic and speech measures of temporal processing. Findings suggest that age-related factors other than peripheral hearing loss contribute to temporal processing deficits of elderly listeners.

In an anechoic chamber, subjects were required to discriminate a 20 degrees azimuthal change in a lag sound's position in the presence of a lead sound coming from a different direction. Delay between lead and lag sounds was adaptively varied in several conditions to track discrimination suppression thresholds. In experiment 1, lead and lag stimuli were 5-ms, 1-octave, A-weighted noise bursts (65 dB), with lead and lag parametrically set to center frequencies of 0.5, 2.0, or 3.0 kHz. Discrimination suppression thresholds were higher when lead and lag center frequencies coincided (mean: 11.3 ms) than when they did not coincide (mean: 2.9 ms). These results support the "spectral overlap hypothesis" of Blauert and Divenyi [Acustica 66, 267-274 (1988)], but not the "localization strength hypothesis" later proposed by Divenyi [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 91, 1078-1084 (1992)]. Spectral overlap and localization strength appear to be two relatively independent factors governing discrimination suppression. It is proposed here that localization strength is weighted more when stimuli are presented via headphones and the only cue to lateral position is the interaural temporal difference, while spectral overlap is weighted more for free-field presented stimuli. In experiment 2, lead and lag stimuli were 8-ms, 1.5-kHz A-weighted tone bursts (65 dB), with lead and lag rise times parametrically set to 0, 2, or 4 ms. In this case the amount of discrimination suppression increased as lead rise time became more abrupt or as lag rise time became more gradual. These results support the localization strength hypothesis: The greater the localization strength of the lead stimulus (independently assessed by measuring its minimum audible angle in isolation), the greater suppression it exerted on discriminability of the lag sound's position. It appears that for stimuli presented in the free-field, spectral overlap is the primary factor affecting discrimination suppression, but when overlap is held constant, abruptness of stimulus onsets governs the amount of suppression.

The precedence effect is a phenomenon that may occur when a sound from one direction (the lead) is followed within a few milliseconds by the same or a similar sound from another direction (the lag, or the echo). Typically, the lag sound is not heard as a separate event, and changes in the lag sound's direction cannot be discriminated. The hypothesis is proposed in this study that these two aspects of precedence (echo suppression and discrimination suppression) are at least partially independent phenomena. Two experiments were conducted in which pairs of noise bursts were presented to subjects from two loudspeakers in the horizontal plane to simulate a lead sound and a lag sound (the echo). Echo suppression threshold was measured as the minimum echo delay at which subjects reported hearing two sounds rather than one sound; discrimination suppression threshold was measured as the minimum echo delay at which subjects could reliably discriminate between two positions of the echo. In Experiment 1, it was found that echo suppression threshold was the same as discrimination suppression threshold when measured with a single burst pair (average 5.4 msec). However, when measured after presentation of a train of burst pairs (a condition that may produce "buildup of suppression"), discrimination suppression threshold increased to 10.4 msec, while echo suppression threshold increased to 26.4 msec. The greater buildup of echo suppression than of discrimination suppression indicates that the two phenomena are distinct under buildup conditions and may be the reflection of different underlying mechanisms. Experiment 2 investigated the effect of the directional properties of the lead and lag sounds on discrimination suppression and echo suppression. There was no consistent effect of the spatial separation between lead and lag sources on discrimination suppression or echo suppression, nor was there any consistent difference between the two types of thresholds (overall average threshold was 5.9 msec). The negative result in Experiment 2 may have been due to the measurements being obtained only for single-stimulus conditions and not for buildup conditions that may involve more central processing by the auditory system.

Offset auditory brainstem response (ABR) traditionally has been thought to be an artifactual response elicited by stimulus acoustic ringing. Additionally, offset ABR's sensitivity to stimulus rise-fall time has been associated with concurrent changes in acoustic ringing. The present study tested the validity of offset ABR by recording the response in 40 young, normal-hearing adults using tone burst stimuli with varying degrees of acoustic ringing and various rise-fall times. Stimuli were computer-generated 10-ms tone bursts of 500 and 2000 Hz. In Experiment 1, offset ABR was recorded using stimuli with no acoustic ringing, normal ringing, and excessive ringing. Rise-fall time was held constant at 0.5 ms. In Experiment 2, rise-fall time was manipulated in a stimulus with no ringing. In Experiment 3, only rise time was manipulated in a no-ringing stimulus, while fall time was held constant at 0.5 ms. Reliable offset ABRs were recorded for all degrees of acoustic ringing, including the "no-ringing' condition. Offset ABR was sensitive to rise and fall times, and was elicited best with a 500-Hz stimulus. The results indicate that offset ABR is a real response and not an artifact produced by acoustic ringing.

Echo threshold is that critical delay of a logging signal (the echo) at which the echo is "suppressed"--i.e., at which one rather than two events is perceived. It has recently been shown that echo threshold increases in most subjects when they are exposed to a train of redundant information prior to the test stimulus presentation--that is, there is buildup of echo suppression in the presence of the preceding train [Clifton et al., J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 95, 1525-1533 (1994)]. The present investigation measured echo threshold in 25 normal-hearing adult subjects, both for isolated (baseline) test stimuli and for test stimuli preceded by a redundant train of stimuli (buildup conditions). The test stimulus was a 4-microsecond wideband noise burst pair, in which the lead burst was presented from either the left or right side (from near -45 degrees or or near (+)45 degrees in different runs), and the lag burst was presented from the opposite side. Echo delay was varied adaptively, and the subject's task was to indicate on each trial which of two alternative positions (separated by 20 degrees) the lag sources was presented from. Average echo threshold in the baseline condition was 11.2 microseconds (in agreement with previous results) and did not depend on whether the lead burst was on the subject's left or right side. Average echo threshold in the buildup conditions was significantly elevated. Interestingly, there was a significantly greater buildup effect when the lead stimulus came from the subject's right side (average echo threshold: 24.4 microseconds) than when it came from the left side (average: 18.8 microseconds). This result agrees with informal observations made by Clifton and Freyman [Percept. Psychophys. 46, 139-145 (1989)] and suggests that there is more effective suppression of echo information when the lead stimulus originates from the right side (i.e., the side contralateral to the typically dominant hemisphere) that when it originates from the left side. The distribution of the magnitude of buildup effects across subjects (i.e., echo threshold in the presence of the train minus baseline echo threshold) was unimodal and symmetric, both for lag source on left (mean: 14.1 microseconds) and for lag source on right (mean: 6.7 microseconds). These results are discussed in relation to other hearing asymmetries that have been reported.

Duplex perception occurs when part of the acoustic signal is used for both a speech and a nonspeech percept. This phenomenon has been interpreted as evidence of a distinct system for speech perception that precedes other specialized systems of general auditory processing (such as auditory grouping, and perception of pitch, loudness, and timbre). This interpretation was investigated by using an intensity-dependent form of duplex perception with the acoustic pair /da/ and /ga/. The "base" portion of the stimulus, common to both, consisted of the first and second formants and the steady-state portion of the third formant (F3). The F3 transition (either a sinusoid or a true formant), which cued the difference between /da/ and /ga/, was varied in intensity and fundamental frequency (F0). For every subject, the level at which each type of F3 transition was barely audible in the context of the base, i.e., duplex perception threshold, was first established. Next, identification functions were obtained by varying the intensity of the F3 transition relative to each subject's duplex perception threshold. Results revealed that duplex perception thresholds decreased as the F0 of the F3 transition increasingly differed from the base. Also, identification functions showed that, as has been previously demonstrated, the F3 transition contributed to the speech percept over a wide range of intensities and fundamental frequencies. However, as F3 transition intensity increased well above duplex perception threshold, /ga/ identification decreased. Also, both /da/ and /ga/ identification progressively decreased as the F0 of the F3 transition increasingly differed from the base. Contrary to previous duplex perception reports, such findings indicate that both intensity and F0 information is available to the specialized speech perception system. Thus, the computations of the speech perception system and its relation to the general auditory processing systems need to be reexamined.

Transient acoustic stimuli are used for generating auditory evoked responses (AERs). Common transducers do not accurately reproduce transient stimuli, since the transducer diaphragm oscillates at its resonant frequency at the abrupt initiation or termination of a stimulus. These oscillations are called "acoustic ringing." This paper discusses methods for reducing and canceling acoustic ringing, and describes one method, a systems approach, in detail. It also delineates one method for enhancing acoustic ringing. The methods described provide effective techniques for empirical study of the effects of acoustic ringing on AERs or for any application requiring accurate transduction of a transient stimulus.

Thresholds for auditory motion detectability were measured in a darkened anechoic chamber while subjects were adapted to horizontally moving sound sources of various velocities. All stimuli were 500-Hz lowpass noises presented at a level of 55 dBA. The threshold measure employed was the minimum audible movement angle (MAMA)--that is, the minimum angle a horizontally moving sound must traverse to be just discriminable from a stationary sound. In an adaptive, two-interval forced-choice procedure, trials occurred every 2-5 sec (Experiment 1) or every 10-12 sec (Experiment 2). Intertrial time was "filled" with exposure to the adaptor--a stimulus that repeatedly traversed the subject's front hemifield at ear level (distance: 1.7 m) at a constant velocity (-150 degrees/sec to +150 degrees/sec) during a run. Average MAMAs in the control condition, in which the adaptor was stationary (0 degrees/sec,) were 2.4 degrees (Experiment 1) and 3.0 degrees (Experiment 2). Three out of 4 subjects in each experiment showed significantly elevated MAMAs (by up to 60%), with some adaptors relative to the control condition. However, there were large intersubject differences in the shape of the MAMA versus adaptor velocity functions. This loss of sensitivity to motion that most subjects show after exposure to moving signals is probably one component underlying the auditory motion aftereffect (Grantham, 1989), in which judgments of the direction of moving sounds are biased in the direction opposite to that of a previously presented adaptor.

Modulation detection thresholds (20 log ms) for a sinusoidally amplitude-modulated (SAM) noise were measured in the presence of a SAM noise masker with a modulation depth (mm) of 1.0 and a modulation frequency of 16 or 64 Hz. The signal and masker carriers were presented continuously, and the signal was modulated during one of the two 500-ms observation intervals. The masker was modulated during both observation intervals and, in some conditions, for a certain amount of time before and after signal modulation. The duration of this "fringe" ranged from 62.5 ms to continuous (masker modulated throughout the thresholds estimate). The first experiment showed that a 500-ms fringe could reduce masked thresholds by 4-6 dB, but only at low signal modulation frequencies (2-8 Hz). In the second and third experiments, it was found that the fringe had to have a duration of 500 ms and a depth of about 0.75 to be maximally effective. A final, supplementary experiment indicated that the fringe effect is not due solely to the fringe that occurs prior to the observation intervals. The results are discussed in terms of both peripheral and central auditory processing.

Minimum audible movement angles (MAMAs) were measured in the horizontal plane for four normal-hearing adult subjects in a darkened anechoic chamber. On each trial, a single stimulus was presented, and the subject had to say whether it came from a stationary loudspeaker or from a loudspeaker that was moving at a constant angular velocity around him. Thresholds were established by adaptively varying stimulus duration. In experiment 1, MAMAs were measured as a function of center frequency (500-5000 Hz), velocity (10 degrees-180 degrees/s), and direction of motion (left versus right). There was no effect of direction of motion. MAMAs increased with velocity, from an average of 8.8 degrees of arc for a target moving at 10 degrees/s to an average of 20.2 degrees of arc for a target moving at 180 degrees/s. MAMAs were higher for a 3000-Hz tone than for tones of lower or higher frequencies, as has been previously reported [D. R. Perrott and J. Tucker, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 83, 1522-1527 (1988)]. In experiment 2, minimum audible angles (MAAs) were measured with sequentially presented stationary tone pulses (500-5000 Hz), and were shown to exhibit the same dependence on signal frequency that the MAMAs showed (average MAA at 3000 Hz: 8.4 degrees; average MAA at the other frequencies: 3.4 degrees). In experiment 3, MAMAs and MAAs were measured as a function of stimulus bandwidth (centered at 3000 Hz) and listening azimuth (0 degrees vs 60 degrees). Average MAAs decreased monotonically as stimulus bandwidth increased from 0 Hz to wideband (from 8.4 degrees to 1.2 degrees at 0 degrees azimuth; from 11.3 degrees to 1.5 degrees at 60 degrees azimuth). As in experiment 1, MAMAs increased with stimulus velocity, from values comparable to the MAAs for the slowest-velocity (10 degrees/s) targets to 70 degrees of arc or more in the poorest condition (third-octave band of noise presented at a velocity of 180 degrees/s and an azimuth of 60 degrees). MAMAs obtained in the slower-velocity conditions depended in the same way on stimulus bandwidth and listening azimuth that MAAs depended on these variables. In no case was the MAMA ever smaller than the MAA. It is hypothesized that a minimum integration time is required to achieve optimal performance in a dynamic spatial resolution task. Average estimates of this minimum time based on the current data vary from 336 ms (for targets presented at midline) to 1116 ms (for narrow-band targets presented at 60 degrees azimuth).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Modulation thresholds were measured in three subjects for a sinusoidally amplitude-modulated (SAM) wideband noise (the signal) in the presence of a second amplitude-modulated wideband noise (the masker). In monaural conditions (Mm-Sm) masker and signal were presented to only one ear; in binaural conditions (M0-S pi) the masker was presented diotically while the phase of modulation of the SAM noise signal was inverted in one ear relative to the other. In experiment 1 masker modulation frequency (fm) was fixed at 16 Hz, and signal modulation frequency (fs) was varied from 2-512 Hz. For monaural presentation, masking generally decreased as fs diverged from fm, although there was a secondary increase in masking for very low signal modulation frequencies, as reported previously [Bacon and Grantham, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 85, 2575-2580 (1989)]. The binaural masking patterns did not show this low-frequency upturn: binaural thresholds continued to improve as fs decreased from 16 to 2 Hz. Thus, comparing masked monaural and masked binaural thresholds, there was an average binaural advantage, or masking-level difference (MLD) of 9.4 dB at fs = 2 Hz and 5.3 dB at fs = 4 Hz. In addition, there were positive MLDs for the on-frequency condition (fm = fs = 16 Hz: average MLD = 4.4 dB) and for the highest signal frequency tested (fs = 512 Hz: average MLD = 7.3 dB). In experiment 2 the signal was a SAM noise (fs = 16 Hz), and the masker was a wideband noise, amplitude-modulated by a narrow band of noise centered at fs. There was no effect on monaural or binaural thresholds as masker modulator bandwidth was varied from 4 to 20 Hz (the average MLD remained constant at 8.0 dB), which suggests that the observed "tuning" for modulation may be based on temporal pattern discrimination and not on a critical-band-like filtering mechanism. In a final condition the masker modulator was a 10-Hz-wide band of noise centered at the 64-Hz signal modulation frequency. The average MLD in this case was 7.4 dB. The results are discussed in terms of various binaural capacities that probably play a role in binaural release from modulation masking, including detection of varying interaural intensity differences (IIDs) and discrimination of interaural correlation.

A horizontally moving sound was presented to an observer seated in the center of an anechoic chamber. The sound, either a 500-Hz low-pass noise or a 6300-Hz high-pass noise, repeatedly traversed a semicircular arc in the observer's front hemifield at ear level (distance: 1.5 m). At 10-sec intervals this adaptor was interrupted, and a 750-msec moving probe (a 500-Hz low-pass noise) was presented from a horizontal arc 1.6 m in front of the observer. During a run, the adaptor was presented at a constant velocity (-200 degrees to +200 degrees/sec), while probes with velocities varying from -10 degrees to +10 degrees/sec were presented in a random order. Observers judged the direction of motion (left or right) of each probe. As in the case of stimuli presented over headphones (Grantham & Wightman, 1979), an auditory motion aftereffect (MAE) occurred: subjects responded "left" to probes more often when the adaptor moved right than when it moved left. When the adaptor and probe were spectrally the same, the MAE was greater than when they were from different spectral regions; the magnitude of this difference depended on adaptor speed and was subject-dependent. It is proposed that there are two components underlying the auditory MAE: (1) a generalized bias to respond that probes move in the direction opposite to that of the adaptor, independent of their spectra; and (2) a loss of sensitivity to the velocity of moving sounds after prolonged exposure to moving sounds having the same spectral content.

Recent data from three laboratories have replicated Mills' [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 32, 132-134 (1960)] finding that interaural intensity discrimination is relatively poorer for tones of 1000 Hz than for tones of either higher or lower frequencies. To get a finer look at this frequency effect, interaural intensity difference thresholds were obtained from four subjects for tones of several frequencies around 1000 Hz. An adaptive two-interval forced-choice procedure was employed, in which the overall intensity of the signals was varied randomly in order to prevent subjects from listening to monaural loudness changes. Despite large intersubject differences in overall sensitivity to interaural intensity differences, all four subjects showed a local peak in their threshold functions at or near 1000 Hz. This curious "1000-Hz effect" might be explained by imagining that an interaural intensity comparator operates more efficiently as frequency increases, but that a peripheral interaural intensity difference to interaural-time difference conversion contributes to laterality judgments for low-frequency tones, thus acting to lower thresholds again for frequencies below 1000 Hz.

An experiment was conducted to measure observers' ability to detect time-varying interaural intensity differences (IIDs). In a two-interval forced-choice task, observers discriminated a binaural amplitude modulated (AM) noise in which the modulating sinusoid was interaurally in-phase from the same AM noise in which the modulator was interaurally phase-reversed. The latter stimulus produces a sinusoidally varying IID whose rate and peak IID depend on the frequency (fm) and depth (m) of modulation. The carrier was a narrow-band noise, interaurally uncorrelated, centered at 500, 1000, or 4000 Hz. Presentation level was 75 dB SPL; duration was 1.0 s. For a given fm, m was varied in an adaptive procedure to estimate the depth required for 71% discriminability (mthr). Three of the four observers displayed "low-pass" modulation functions: at 500 Hz, as fm increased from 0-50 Hz, mthr increased from 0.08 (IID = 1.3 dB) to 0.50 (peak IID = 9.5 dB). At 1000 and 4000 Hz observers were more sensitive to IID and the functions (mthr vs fm) were flatter than at 500 Hz. Comparison of these data to previously published data indicates that the binaural system can follow fluctuations in IID more efficiently than it can follow fluctuations in interaural time difference, although there are large individual differences in subjects' capacity to process these two types of binaural cues.

Temporal effects in simultaneous pure-tone masking were studied in three subjects with a high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss. The masker level was generally 80 dB SPL, and the signal level was varied adaptively to threshold. Masker frequency was always 1.2 times the signal frequency, and three different frequency regions were studied: (1) signal and masker in region of normal hearing; (2) signal in region of normal hearing and masker in region of hearing loss; and (3) signal and masker in region of hearing loss. In the first experiment, the masker was either gated synchronously with the 20-ms signal or was presented continuously. The gated-continuous threshold difference was largest when both the masker and signal were in a region of normal hearing; that difference decreased, though was not eliminated, when either the masker or the signal-plus-masker was in a region of hearing loss. In the second experiment, threshold was measured for the 20-ms signal as a function of its temporal position within a 400-ms masker. Consistent with the first experiment, the biggest change in masking over time generally occurred when the signal and masker were in a region of normal hearing. These data suggest that the mechanisms responsible for temporal effects in normal-hearing subjects (and in regions of normal hearing in subjects with a hearing loss) are adversely affected by (even a mild) sensorineural hearing loss. Moreover, these data suggest that what may be most important for a normal temporal effect is the integrity of the frequency region where the masker is presented.

The phase angle, alpha, between a tonal signal and a tonal masker was varied from 0 degrees to 135 degrees in simultaneous masking, forward masking, and pulsation-threshold paradigms. In all conditions the frequency of the signal and masker was 500 Hz. For forward masking both diotic (MOSO) and dichotic (MOS pi) listening conditions were investigated. Only the dichotic case was studied using the pulsation threshold method. In simultaneous masking, thresholds varied as a function of alpha in both diotic and dichotic conditions. Thresholds in the diotic conditions were consistently different from those in the dichotic conditions -- i.e., there were masking-level differences (MLDs) at most values of alpha tested. In forward masking and pulsation-threshold, however, thresholds were independent of alpha in the dichotic conditions; and thresholds were independent of alpha in the diotic, forward masking conditions. Nevertheless, for forward masking the dichotic thresholds remained below the diotic thresholds, yielding MLDs of 3-6 dB. Thus, in nonsimultaneous masking, there is a clear effect of the interaural signal phase, but not of the masker-signal phase relationship, on signal detectability. These results imply that masker-signal phase information is either not preserved or not used by subjects in nonsimultaneous tone-on-tone masking experiments.

Three experiments investigated subjects' ability to detect and discriminate the simulated horizontal motion of auditory targets in an anechoic environment. "Moving" stimuli were produced by dynamic application of stereophonic balancing algorithms to a two-loudspeaker system with a 30 degree separation. All stimuli were 500-Hz tones. In experiment 1, subjects had to discriminate a left-to-right moving stimulus from a stationary stimulus pulsed for the same duration (300 or 600 ms). For both durations, minimum audible "movement" angles ("MAMA's") were on the order of 5 degrees for stimuli presented at 0 degrees azimuth (straight ahead), and increased to greater than 30 degrees for stimuli presented at +/- 90 degrees azimuth. Experiment 2 further investigated MAMA's at 0 degrees azimuth, employing two different procedures to track threshold: holding stimulus duration constant (at 100-600 ms) while varying velocity; or holding the velocity constant (at 22 degrees-360 degrees/s) while varying duration. Results from the two procedures agreed with each other and with the MAMA's determined by Perrott and Musicant for actually moving sound sources [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 62, 1463-1466 (1977b)]: As stimulus duration decreased below 100-150 ms, the MAMA's increased sharply from 5 degrees-20 degrees or more, indicating that there is some minimum integration time required for subjects to perform optimally in an auditory spatial resolution task. Experiment 3 determined differential "velocity" thresholds employing simulated reference velocities of 0 degrees-150 degrees/s and stimulus durations of 150-600 ms. As with experiments 1 and 2, the data are more easily summarized by considering angular distance than velocity: For a given "extent of movement" of a reference target, about 4 degrees-10 degrees additional extent is required for threshold discrimination between two "moving" targets, more or less independently of stimulus duration or reference velocity. These data suggest that for the range of simulated velocities employed in these experiments, subjects respond to spatial changes--not velocity per se--when presented with a "motion" detection or discrimination task.

Several different measures have been employed in the literature to describe performance by human observers in intensity discrimination tasks. These measures include the difference limen (DL) or "delta I in dB," the Weber fraction (delta I/I), and signal-to-masker ratio (Ps/Pm). This article describes the mathematical relationship among these measures for conditions in which masker and signal are (1) sinusoids of the same frequency; (2) sinusoids of different frequencies; and (3) noise waveforms. We provide a table which contains values of each of these measures, describing equivalent performance over the typical range obtained in most intensity discrimination experiments. We express some cautions that should be observed in choosing and reporting particular measures of intensity discrimination.

Detectability of binaurally presented 400- and 800-Hz tonal signals was investigated in an adaptive, two-interval forced-choice experiment. A continuous 3150-Hz low-pass noise masker was presented either diotically (No), interaurally uncorrelated (NU), or interaurally phase-reversed (N pi), at an overall level of 70 dB SPL. Signal duration was either 100 or 1000 ms. The interaural phase difference (IAPD) of the signal was either fixed (0 degree-180 degrees) or time-varying (slightly different frequencies were presented to the two ears). The range of interaural phase variations was selected to yield the same varying interaural temporal differences that would be produced if real auditory targets moved through various arcs in the horizontal plane. In no case was a signal with varying IAPD any more (or less) detectable than would be expected from averaging subjects' performance in the corresponding fixed-IAPD conditions through which the variation occurred. However, in detecting these signals, subjects placed relatively more weight on the temporal central portion than on either the onset or offset. It is proposed that this weighting effect is based on two factors: (1) the signal's 20-ms rise-decay time (i.e., the onset and offset receive less binaural weight because of monaural attenuation); and (2) the very low-pass filtering effected by the binaural system, which results in some minimum time required for it to become "fully engaged." Another finding was that signal detectability became gradually worse as the antiphasic moment in a varying-IAPD signal was moved from the temporal midpoint toward the onset. No evidence was found that a signal's onset and offset were weighted differently in a binaural signal detection task.

Detectability and salience of time-varying interaural temporal differences (IATD's) were measured in three experiments by determining observers' ability to follow the temporal fluctuations of a "moving stimulus"--a 3000-Hz low-pass computer-generated noise presented binaurally with a sinusoidally varying IATD. In the first two experiments the peak IATD (deltat the "extent of movement") was manipulated to determine, for different rates of interaural variation (fm), threshold discriminability of the "moving" stimulus from a reference (two-interval forced-choice paradigm). The nonmoving reference was either a dichotic noise stimulus (experiment 1) or a dichotic noise stimulus whose "image width" matched that of the excursions traced by the "moving stimulus" (experiment 2). Threshold deltat's in the two experiments were similar, increasing from 30 microns at fm = 0 Hz to 90 microns at fm = 20 Hz, indicating a "low-pass characteristic" for the binaural system. Thresholds decreased again for fm = 50 Hz, apparently because at these high rates of "movement" observers used other cues than the varying IATD's to perform the task. The third experiment measured the threshold of a binaural click in the presence of a "moving noise" masker as a function of fm and of the instantaneous IATD of the masker when the click was presented. As fm increased, click threshold gradually became independent of the masker's instantaneous IATD, again suggesting a "low-pass" characteristic for the binaural system; additionally, there was some evidence for a lag in the system's response for fm greater than 5 Hz. The data from the three experiments are discussed in terms of results from other studies which have investigated temporal aspects of the binaural system. The possible existence of movement detectors in the auditory system is discussed.

Modulation thresholds were measured for a sinusoidally amplitude-modulated (SAM) broadband noise in the presence of a SAM broadband background noise with a modulation depth (mm) of 0.00, 0.25, or 0.50, where the condition mm = 0.00 corresponds to standard (unmasked) modulation detection. The modulation frequency of the masker was 4, 16, or 64 Hz; the modulation frequency of the signal ranged from 2-512 Hz. The greatest amount of modulation masking (masked threshold minus unmasked threshold) typically occurred when the signal frequency was near the masker frequency. The modulation masking patterns (amount of modulation masking versus signal frequency) for the 4-Hz masker were low pass, whereas the patterns for the 16- and 64-Hz maskers were somewhat bandpass (although not strictly so). In general, the greater the modulation depth of the masker, the greater the amount of modulation masking (although this trend was reversed for the 4-Hz masker at high signal frequencies). These modulation-masking data suggest that there are channels in the auditory system which are tuned for the detection of modulation frequency, much like there are channels (critical bands or auditory filters) tuned for the detection of spectral frequency.

In a two-interval, forced-choice task, observers discriminated a binaural noise whose interaural correlation r varied according to the function r(t) = m cos 2 pi fmt from an interaurally uncorrelated noise [NU; r(t) = 0.0]. The former stimulus produces a perceptual binaural "flutter," where the flutter rate is equal to the modulation frequency fm, and the amount of flutter corresponds to m. The stimuli were 0.4-octave-wide Gaussian noises with center frequencies of 500, 1000, 2000, or 4000 Hz. Presentation levels were 70-75 dB SPL; duration was 1.0 s. For a given modulation frequency, the peak interaural correlation m was varied in a blocked procedure, and thresholds were estimated as that value of m required for 75% discriminability. Plotting thresholds as a function of fm yields a modulation function, which can be interpreted as an "attenuation characteristic" of the binaural system. For the 500-Hz stimulus, thresholds increased from m - 0.28 at fm = 1 Hz to m - 0.80 at fm - 50 Hz. For higher frequency stimuli, discrimination was generally poorer and the modulation functions were flatter: thus, for 2000 Hz, m = 0.54 at fm = 1 Hz and m = 0.71 at fm = 20 Hz; for 4000 Hz, m = 0.71 at fm = 1 Hz and m = 0.81 at fm = 10 Hz. The modulation function from an "ideal observer" (at 500 Hz) differed in both form and absolute level from those of real observers. The data are discussed in relation to previous work on dynamic binaural processing.

Identification of place of articulation in the synthesized syllables /bi/, /di/, and /gi/ was examined in three groups of listeners: (a) normal hearers, (b) subjects with high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss, and (c) normally hearing subjects listening in noise. Stimuli with an appropriate second formant (F2) transition (moving-F2 stimuli) were compared with stimuli in which F2 was constant (straight-F2 stimuli) to examine the importance of the F2 transition in stop-consonant perception. For straight-F2 stimuli, burst spectrum and F2 frequency were appropriate for the syllable involved. Syllable duration also was a variable, with formant durations of 10, 19, 28, and 44 ms employed. All subjects' identification performance improved as stimulus duration increased. The groups were equivalent in terms of their identification of /di/ and /gi/ syllables, whereas the hearing-impaired and noise-masked normal listeners showed impaired performance for /bi/, particularly for the straight-F2 version. No difference in performance among groups was seen for /di/ and /gi/ stimuli for moving-F2 and straight-F2 versions. Second-formant frequency discrimination measures suggested that subjects' discrimination abilities were not acute enough to take advantage of the formant transition in the /di/ and /gi/ stimuli.

Detectability of a filtered probe tone (250, 500, or 1000 Hz) was measured in the presence of a narrow-band Gaussian masker centered at the signal frequency. The signal was interaurally phase-reversed (Spi), and the masker's interaural correlation varied sinusoidally between +1.00 (NO) and -1.00 (Npi) at a varaible rate (fm = 0--4 Hz). The signal was presented at various points on the masker's modulation cycle. For 0-Hz modulation (fixed interaural correlation) signal threshold decreased monotonically as the masker's interaural correlation was changed from -1.00 to +1.00 (by a total of about 20, 16, and 8 dB, respectively, for 250-, 500-, and 1000-Hz signals). For fm greater than 0 the function relating signal threshold to the masker's interaural correlation at the moment of signal presentation became progressively flatter with increasing fm for all signal frequencies. For fm = 4 Hz the function was flat; there was no measurable effect of masker interaural correlation on signal detectability. Estimates of minimum binaural integration time based on these data ranged from 44--243 ms, supporting previous studies which have noted the binaural system's relative insensitivity to dynamic stimulation. Additionally, the estimated time constants were approximately twice as large at 250 Hz as at 500 Hz, indicating observers could follow binaural fluctuations better at 500 Hz. The time-constant estimates at 1000 Hz were not suggiciently reliable to permit comparisons with the lower-frequency data.
