Abstract

Differential Global Satellite Navigation Systems (DGNSS) are based on the principle that the main sources of error in satellite navigation are consistent over substantial geographical areas. The magnitudes of these errors can be measured by installing reference receivers at fixed, known locations. The corrections they generate are then broadcast via a radio system. DGNSS users in the vicinity receive these corrections and employ them to adjust their own position measurements accordingly. Marine radiobeacons are widely used to transmit these correction messages to maritime users. These radiobeacons enjoy an existing, protected, frequency band and large numbers of them are available world-wide. Recent research has studied the many factors that affect the coverage of radiobeacons. These include propagation losses, skywave-borne interference from the many beacons that share the radio band, and atmosphe1ic noise. The results have been embodied in a widely-used computer model for predicting the coverages of beacons when planning DGNSS systems. Of comparable importance, however, is ensunng that the beacons' signals are available with an adequate probability across that coverage region. This research analyses this question ofDGNSS radiobeacon availability. It identifies and quantifies the many factors which detennine the probability of obtaining a service of adequate quality. Stochastic elements, such as atmospheric noise and skywave propagation, are evaluated. So are detem1inistic factors such as groundwave propagation of the beacon's signal, and interference. Novel techniques are then proposed for combining these multiple factors so as to allow a single probability of availability to be calculated at any location. This work is then extended to include continuity: the probability of the service remaining available o ver a specified period. These new techniques have been built into a computer model that evaluates the availability, continuity, and coverage for both individual stations and networks of DGNSS radiobeacons. The resulting software enables administrations to plan their systems, ensuring that all three criteria are met.

Abstract

Variations in postmortem metabolism in muscle impact pork quality development. Curiously, some genetic lines are more refractile to adverse pork quality development than others and may regulate energy metabolism differently. The aim of this study was to challenge pork carcasses from different genetic populations with electrical stimulation (ES) to determine how postmortem metabolism varies with genetic line and explore control points that reside in glycolysis in dying muscle. Three genetic populations (GP) were subjected to ES (100 V or 200 V, 13 pulses, 2 s on/2 s off) at 15- or 25-min post-exsanguination, or no stimulation (NS). Genetic population affected relative muscle relative abundance of different myosin heavy chains, glycogen, G6P, and lactate concentrations. Genetic lines responded similarly to ES, but a comparison of ES treatment groups revealed a trend for an interaction between voltage, time of ES, and time postmortem. Higher voltage accelerated pH decline at 20 min up to 60 min postmortem. Trends in color and firmness scores and L* values were consistent with pH and metabolite data. These data show that genetic populations respond differently to postmortem perturbation by altering glycolytic flux and suggest differences in postmortem glycolysis may be partially responsible for differences in meat quality between genetic populations, though not entirely.

Abstract

The General Lighthouse Authorities (GLA) R&D Directorate has, for some time, advocated that alternate position navigation and timing (PNT) systems should be established to offset critical dependency on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), both in the maritime world and across wider industry. The maritime world already has a number of viable systems that may provide a ship's navigator with position-fixing information independent of GNSS. A promising option is radar. Depending on size, merchant vessels are required to fit radar operating in the X-band (9 GHz) and, optionally S-band (3 GHz). The radar return from the shoreline provides a unique and identifiable fingerprint that depends on the location of the vessel. GRAD has developed a number of different processes that can convert a series of images from the ship's radar into a series of output position-fixes, independent of having access to satellite (GNSS) positioning. 49. Driving an Oxidative Phenotype Protects Myh4 Null Mice From Myofiber Loss During Postnatal Growth

Abstract

Postnatal muscle growth is accompanied by increases in fast fiber type compositions and hypertrophy, raising the possibility that a slow to fast transition may be partially requisite for increases in muscle mass. To test this hypothesis, we ablated the Myh4 gene, and thus myosin heavy chain IIB protein and corresponding fibers in mice, and examined its consequences on postnatal muscle growth. Wild-type and Myh4(-/-) mice had the same number of muscle fibers at 2 weeks postnatal. However, the gastrocnemius muscle lost up to 50% of its fibers between 2 and 4 weeks of age, though stabilizing thereafter. To compensate for the lack of functional IIB fibers, type I, IIA, and IIX(D) fibers increased in prevalence and size. To address whether slowing the slow-to-fast fiber transition process would rescue fiber loss in Myh4(-/-) mice, we stimulated the oxidative program in muscle of Myh4(-/-) mice either by overexpression of PGC-1 alpha, a well-established model for fast-to-slow fiber transition, or by feeding mice AICAR, a potent AMP kinase agonist. Forcing an oxidative metabolism in muscle only partially protected the gastrocnemius muscle from loss of fibers in Myh4(-/-) mice. To explore whether traditional means of stimulating muscle hypertrophy could overcome the muscling deficits in postnatal Myh4(-/-) mice, myostatin null mice were bred with Myh4(-/-) mice, or Myh4(-/-) mice were fed the growth promotant clenbuterol. Interestingly, both genetic and pharmacological stimulations had little impact on mice lacking a functional Myh4 gene suggesting that the existing muscle fibers have maximized its capacity to enlarge to compensate for the lack of its neighboring IIB fibers. Curiously, however, cell signaling events responsible for IIB fiber formation remained intact in the tissue. Abstract

Summary: There has been growing interest within the satellite navigation community in the possibility of delivering positioning and timing services from existing or emerging constellations of Low‐Earth Orbit communication satellites. At the same time, the international maritime community has been investigating the potential use of communication signals transmitted from shore‐based stations for positioning—a concept commonly referred to as 'ranging mode', or R‐Mode. The driving force for these developments is the desire to reduce the reliance on traditional Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). One of the technologies being considered for use in R‐Mode is the evolution of the Automatic Identification System (AIS) known as the Very High Frequency Data Exchange System (VDES). VDES has a terrestrial and a satellite component. The feasibility of using terrestrial VDES transmissions for ranging was studied in a previous publication by the authors. This paper builds on the previous study and extends its results to the satellite component of VDES. Statistical bounds on the ranging error are derived for all downlink waveforms currently being considered for use in satellite VDES and for several custom‐designed transmission formats. The analysis supports the feasibility of using both the existing and custom waveforms in ranging applications and points to related trade‐offs that will need to be considered in the design of satellite VDES R‐Mode systems.
