Multiomics approaches need to be applied in the central Arctic Ocean to benchmark biodiversity change and to identify novel species and their genes. As part of MOSAiC, EcoOmics will therefore be essential for conservation and sustainable bioprospecting in one of the least explored ecosystems on Earth.

Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) is a ubiquitous component in marine environments, and substantial changes in its sources and distribution, related to the carbon cycle in the Arctic Ocean, are expected due to Arctic warming. In this study, we present unique CDOM data in the Eurasian Arctic Ocean derived from the year‐round MOSAiC expedition. We used CDOM absorbance spectra and fluorescence excitation‐emission matrices in combination with parallel factor analysis to characterize differences in DOM sources and composition. Our results suggested that terrestrial DOM was less sensitive to seasonal changes but controlled by regionality in hydrography. Elevated dissolved organic carbon (DOC) levels in polar surface water were primarily derived from terrigenous sources as identified by CDOM absorption and fluorescence characteristics. In the Amundsen Basin and western Fram Strait surface waters, to which terrestrial DOM is primarily transported by the Transpolar Drift, we found, on average, a 188% larger meteoric water fraction and a 40% higher DOC concentration compared to the Atlantic water that dominated western Nansen Basin and Yermak Plateau. In the Amundsen Basin, the DOC concentration in summer of surface water was only 13% higher compared to winter season. Additionally, autochthonous DOM and chlorophyll‐a concentrations were relatively low in surface water and exhibited significant differences compared to those observed in summer, while there were significant differences between autochthonous DOM and chlorophyll‐a. We also observed that sea ice melt contributed to autochthonous DOM in summer, while storms in winter affected the vertical distribution of terrestrial and autochthonous DOM in the subsurface. Plain Language Summary: In the Arctic Ocean, dissolved organic matter (DOM) is important because it represents a large carbon reservoir that cycles through the environment and supports the growth of marine life in the Arctic. DOM originates from various sources and its composition changes depending on factors like location and time of year, largely influenced by ocean currents. Microbes in the water break down DOM, but this process is hindered during the winter months and in areas with limited sunlight. Due to the very limited and challenging accessibility of the Central Arctic Ocean, there is a lack of DOM data, especially during winter in the Eurasian Arctic Ocean. Scientists conducted a comprehensive year‐round study during the MOSAiC expedition and discovered that much of the DOM in the Arctic comes from land in Siberia. Additionally, seasonal changes were observed to alter the composition of locally produced chromophoric DOM (CDOM) in surface waters of the Amundsen Basin. In contrast, terrestrial CDOM is less responsive to seasonal shifts but more influenced by regional variations in hydrography. This highlights the substantial role of regional hydrographic differences in shaping the characteristics of DOM in surface water across the Eurasian Arctic Ocean. Sampling for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the Arctic is challenging given the limited access and because it is not yet possible to measure with instruments deployed in situ. Compared to DOC, colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) absorption spectroscopy is an easy‐to‐measure, relatively quick and cost‐effective approach which is often closely related to DOC concentrations in water samples. Here we present an algorithm based on quantitative and qualitative metrics of CDOM to provide DOC estimates derived from a Pan‐Arctic data set (n = 3,302) spanning rivers to deep ocean, with DOC ranging between 31 and 1,958 μM. The algorithm provided robust DOC estimates (r2 = 0.94; p < 0.0001) and could reproduce DOC profiles and mixing plots across different locations in the Arctic Ocean. Besides its simplicity, this method is capable of capturing the extremely broad range of DOC within the strong gradients observed between Arctic riverine and marine systems. Measuring DOC requires resource‐intensive lab analysis. The optical properties of colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) are easier, quick and cost‐effective to measure, and can therefore be sampled at a higher frequency or with autonomous sensors. Here we develop an algorithm that uses CDOM optical properties to estimate DOC concentrations across the entire Arctic Ocean, spanning from rivers (high DOC) to the deep waters (low DOC). The algorithm provides reliable estimates and can reproduce regional features, which shows that the method is effective and can be employed to increase sampling efforts for DOC in remote Arctic waters. Sea-ice ridges constitute a large fraction of the total Arctic sea-ice area (up to 40 %–50 %); nevertheless, they are the least studied part of the ice pack. Here we investigate sea-ice melt rates using rare, repeated underwater multibeam sonar surveys that cover a period of 1 month during the advanced stage of sea-ice melt. Bottom melt increases with ice draft for first- and second-year level ice and a first-year ice ridge, with an average of 0.46, 0.55, and 0.95 m of total snow and ice melt in the observation period, respectively. On average, the studied ridge had a 4.6 m keel bottom draft, was 42 m wide, and had 4 % macroporosity. While bottom melt rates of ridge keel were 3.8 times higher than first-year level ice, surface melt rates were almost identical but responsible for 40 % of ridge draft decrease. Average cross-sectional keel melt ranged from 0.2 to 2.6 m, with a maximum point ice loss of 6 m, showcasing its large spatial variability. We attribute 57 % of the ridge total (surface and bottom) melt variability to keel draft (36 %), slope (32 %), and width (27 %), with higher melt for ridges with a larger draft, a steeper slope, and a smaller width. The melt rate of the ridge keel flanks was proportional to the draft, with increased keel melt within 10 m of its bottom corners and the melt rates between these corners comparable to the melt rates of level ice.
