Search

Magnetar Giant Flares (MGFs) are the most energetic non-catastrophic transients known to originate from stellar objects. The first discovered events were nearby. In recent years, several extragalactic events have been identified, implying an extremely high volumetric rate. We show that future instruments with a sensitivity $\lesssim 5\times 10^{-9}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ at $\sim 1$ MeV will be dominated by extragalactic MGFs over short gamma-ray bursts (sGRBs). Clear discrimination of MGFs requires intrinsic GRB localization capability to identify host galaxies. As MGFs involve a release of a sizable fraction of the neutron star's magnetic free energy reservoir in a single event, they provide us with invaluable tools for better understanding magnetar birth properties and the evolution of their magnetic fields. A major obstacle is to identify a (currently) small sub-population of MGFs in a larger sample of more energetic and distant sGRBs. We develop the tools to analyze the properties of detected events and their occurrence rate relative to sGRBs. Even with the current (limited) number of events, we can constrain the initial internal magnetic field of a typical magnetar at formation to be $B_0\approx 4\times 10^{14}-2\times 10^{15}$\,G. Larger samples will constrain the distribution of birth fields. We also estimate the contribution of MGFs to the gravitational wave (GW) stochastic background. Depending on the acceleration time of baryon-loaded ejecta involved in MGFs, their GW emission may reach beyond 10~kHz and, if so, will likely dominate over other conventional astrophysical sources in that frequency range., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are powered by ultra-relativistic jets. The launching sites of these jets are surrounded by dense media, which the jets must cross before they can accelerate and release the high energy emission. Interaction with the medium leads to the formation of a mildly relativistic sheath around the jet resulting in an angular structures in the jet's asymptotic Lorentz factor and energy per solid angle, which modifies the afterglow emission. We build a semi-analytical tool to analyze the afterglow light curve and polarization signatures of jets observed from a wide range of viewing angles, and focus on ones with slowly declining energy profiles known as shallow jets. We find overall lower polarization compared to the classical top-hat jet model. We provide an analytical expression for the peak polarization degree as a function of the energy profile power-law index, magnetic field configuration and viewing angle, and show that it occurs near the light curve break time for all viewers. When applying our tool to GRB 221009A, suspected to originate from a shallow jet, we find that the suggested jet structures for this event agree with the upper limits placed on the afterglow polarization in the optical and X-ray bands. We also find that at early times the polarization levels may be significantly higher, allowing for a potential distinction between different jet structure models and possibly constraining the magnetization in both forward and reverse shocks at that stage., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most electromagnetically luminous cosmic explosions. They are powered by collimated streams of plasma (jets) ejected by a newborn stellar-mass black hole or neutron star at relativistic velocities (near the speed of light). Their short-lived (typically tens of seconds) prompt $\gamma$-ray emission from within the ejecta is followed by long-lived multi-wavelength afterglow emission from the ultra-relativistic forward shock. This shock is driven into the circumburst medium by the GRB ejecta that are in turn decelerated by a mildly-relativistic reverse shock. Forward shock emission was recently detected up to teraelectronvolt-energy $\gamma$-rays, and such very-high-energy emission was also predicted from the reverse shock. Here we report the detection of optical and gigaelectronvolt-energy $\gamma$-ray emission from GRB 180720B during the first few hundred seconds, which is explained by synchrotron and inverse-Compton emission from the reverse shock propagating into the ejecta, implying a low-magnetization ejecta. Our optical measurements show a clear transition from the reverse shock to the forward shock driven into the circumburst medium, accompanied by a 90-degree change in the mean polarization angle and fluctuations in the polarization degree and angle. This indicates turbulence with large-scale toroidal and radially-stretched magnetic field structures in the reverse and forward shocks, respectively, which tightly couple to the physics of relativistic shocks and GRB jets -- launching, composition, dissipation and particle acceleration., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures (main) plus Methods and Supplementary Methods, accepted for publication

Time-resolved linear polarization ($\Pi$) measurements of the prompt gamma-ray burst emission can reveal its dominant radiation mechanism. A widely considered mechanism is synchrotron radiation, for which linear polarization can be used to probe the jet's magnetic-field structure, and in turn its composition. In axisymmetric jet models the polarization angle (PA) can only change by $90^\circ$, as $\Pi$ temporarily vanishes. However, some time-resolved measurements find a continuously changing PA, which requires the flow to be non-axisymmetric in at least one out of its emissivity, bulk Lorentz factor or magnetic field. Here we consider synchrotron emission in non-axisymmetric jets, from an ultrarelativistic thin shell, comprising multiple radially-expanding mini-jets (MJs) or emissivity patches within the global jet, that yield a continuously changing PA. We explore a wide variety of possibilities with emission consisting of a single pulse or multiple overlapping pulses, presenting time-resolved and integrated polarization from different magnetic field configurations and jet angular structures. We find that emission from multiple incoherent MJs/patches reduces the net polarization due to partial cancellation in the Stokes plane. When these contain a large-scale ordered field in the plane transverse to the radial direction, $\Pi$ always starts near maximal and then declines over the single pulse or shows multiple highly polarized peaks due to multiple pulses. Observing $\Pi\lesssim40\%$ ($15\%$) integrated over one (several) pulse(s) will instead favor a shock-produced small-scale field either ordered in the radial direction or tangled in the plane transverse to it., Comment: 18 pages, 20 figures; Added table 1 and section 6; Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Emission in many astrophysical transients originates from a shocked fluid. A central engine typically produces an outflow with varying speeds, leading to internal collisions within the outflow at finite distances from the source. Each such collision produces a pair of forward and reverse shocks with the two shocked regions separated by a contact discontinuity (CD). As a useful approximation, we consider the head-on collision between two cold and uniform shells (a slower leading shell and a faster trailing shell) of finite radial width, and study the dynamics of shock propagation in planar geometry. We find significant differences between the forward and reverse shocks, in terms of their strength, internal energy production efficiency, and the time it takes for the shocks to sweep through the respective shells. We consider the subsequent propagation of rarefaction waves in the shocked regions and explore the cases where these waves can catch up with the shock fronts and thereby limit the internal energy dissipation. We demonstrate the importance of energy transfer from the trailing to leading shell through $pdV$ work across the CD. We outline the parameter space regions relevant for models of different transients,e.g., Gamma-ray burst (GRB) internal shock model, fast radio burst (FRB) blastwave model, Giant flare due to magnetars, and superluminous supernovae (SLSN) ejecta. Shock wave reflection from a rigid wall has been thoroughly studied in the Newtonian limit, simplifying the problem by analyzing it in a steady-state frame, $S'$, where the point $P$ of the shock's intersection with the wall is at rest. However, a "super-luminal" regime emerges when the velocity of point $P$ ($v_p$) exceeds the speed of light ($v_p>c$), where no steady-state frame $S'$ exists. It occurs predominantly in the relativistic regime, relevant in astrophysics, where it encompasses nearly all of the shock incidence angles. To study this regime, we introduce a new approach. We formulate integral conservation laws in the lab frame $S$ (where the unshocked fluid is at rest) for regular reflection (RR), using two methods: a. fixed volume analysis and b. fixed fluid analysis. We show the equivalence between the two methods, and also to the steady-state oblique shock jump conditions in frame $S'$ in the sub-luminal regime ($v_p

Shocks are ubiquitous in astrophysical sources, many of which involve relativistic bulk motions, leading to the formation of relativistic shocks. Such relativistic shocks have so far been studied mainly in one dimension, for simplicity, but the complex nature of the relevant astrophysical flows often requires higher dimensional studies. Here we study the two-dimensional problem of the reflection of a planer shock off of a wall for a general incidence angle and a cold unshocked medium. We use primarily relativistic hydrodynamic numerical simulations, and elaborately compare the results to an analytic treatment. The simulations are performed both in the rest frame S of the unshocked fluid, where the dimensionless proper speed of the singly shocked fluid is $u_1=\Gamma_1\beta_1$ and the shock incidence angle is $\alpha_1$, and in the rest frame S$^\prime$ of the point P of intersection of the incident shock and the wall for regular reflection (RR). Good agreement is obtained between the simulations in these two frames and with the analytic solution. The establishment of a steady flow in frame S$^\prime$ is explored, along with the transition between the strong and weak shock RR solutions. The transition line between RR and Mach reflection (MR) is studied numerically in the $u_1$-$\alpha_1$ plane and found to coincide with the analytic detachment/sonic line. The flow properties along the sonic line are investigated in detail focusing on how they vary between the Newtonian and relativistic limits., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

Internal shocks are a leading candidate for the dissipation mechanism that powers the prompt $\gamma$-ray emission in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). In this scenario a compact central source produces an ultra-relativistic outflow with varying speeds, causing faster parts or shells to collide with slower ones. Each collision produces a pair of shocks -- a forward shock (FS) propagating into the slower leading shell and a reverse shock (RS) propagating into the faster trailing shell. The RS's lab-frame speed is always smaller, while the RS is typically stronger than the FS, leading to different conditions in the two shocked regions that both contribute to the observed emission. We show that optically-thin synchrotron emission from both (weaker FS + stronger RS) can naturally explain key features of prompt GRB emission such as the pulse shapes, time-evolution of the $\nu{}F_\nu$ peak flux and photon-energy, and the spectrum. Particularly, it can account for two features commonly observed in GRB spectra: (i) a sub-dominant low-energy spectral component (often interpreted as ``photospheric''-like), or (ii) a doubly-broken power-law spectrum with the low-energy spectral slope approaching the slow cooling limit. Both features can be obtained while maintaining high overall radiative efficiency without any fine-tuning of the physical conditions., Comment: Published in MNRAS Letters

Exceptionally bright gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows can reveal the angular structure of their jets. GRB jets appear to have a narrow core (of half-opening angle $\theta_c$), beyond which their kinetic energy drops as a power-law with angle $\theta$ from the jet's symmetry axis, $E_{k,\rm iso}(\theta)\propto[1+(\theta/\theta_c)^2]^{-a/2}$. The power-law index $a$ reflects the amount of mixing between the shocked jet and confining medium, which depends on the jet's initial magnetization. Weakly magnetized jets undergo significant mixing, leading to shallow ($a\lesssim2$) angular profiles. We use the exquisite multi-waveband afterglow observations of GRB 221009A to constrain the jet angular structure using a dynamical model that accounts for both the forward and reverse shocks, for a power-law external density profile, $n_{\rm{}ext}\propto{}R^{-k}$. Both the forward-shock emission, that dominates the optical and X-ray flux, and the reverse-shock emission, that produces the radio afterglow, require a jet with a narrow core ($\theta_c\approx0.021$) and a shallow angular structure ($a\approx0.8$) expanding into a stellar wind ($k\approx2$). Moreover, these data appear to favor a small fraction ($\xi_e\approx10^{-2}$) of shock-heated electrons forming a power-law energy distribution in both shocks., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most luminous explosions in the Universe and are powered by ultra-relativistic jets. Their prompt $\gamma$-ray emission briefly outshines the rest of the $\gamma$-ray sky making them detectable from cosmological distances. It is followed by, and sometimes partially overlaps with, a similarly energetic but very broadband and longer-lasting afterglow emission. While most GRBs are detected below a few MeV, over a hundred were detected at high ($\gtrsim0.1\;$GeV) energies and several have now been observed up to tens of GeV with the \textit{Fermi} Large Area Telescope (LAT). A new electromagnetic window in the very high energy (VHE) domain ($\gtrsim0.1\;$TeV) was recently opened with the detection of afterglow emission in the $(0.1$\textendash$1)\,$TeV energy band by ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The emission mechanism for the VHE spectral component is not fully understood, and its detection offers important constraints for GRB physics. This review provides a brief overview of the different leptonic and hadronic mechanisms capable of producing VHE emission in GRBs. The same mechanisms possibly give rise to the high-energy spectral component seen during the prompt emission of many \textit{Fermi}-LAT GRBs. Possible origins of its delayed onset and long duration, well into the afterglow phase, with implications for the emission region and relativistic collisionless shock physics are discussed. The ultra-relativistic outflows powering gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) acquire angular structure through their interaction with external material. They are often characterized by a compact, nearly uniform narrow core (with half-opening angle $\theta_{c,\{\epsilon,\Gamma\}}$) surrounded by material with energy per unit solid angle ($\epsilon=\epsilon_c\Theta_{\epsilon}^{-a}$, where $\Theta_{\{\epsilon,\Gamma\}}=[1+\theta^2/\theta_{c,\{\epsilon,\Gamma\}}^2]^{1/2}$) and initial specific kinetic energy ($\Gamma_0-1=[\Gamma_c-1]\Theta_\Gamma^{-b}$) declining as power laws. Multi-wavelength afterglow lightcurves of off-axis jets (with viewing angle $\theta_{\rm obs} > \theta_c$) offer robust ways to constrain $a$, $b$ and the external density radial profile ($\rho\propto R^{-k}$), even while other burst parameters may remain highly degenerate. We extend our previous work on such afterglows to include more realistic angular structure profiles derived from three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of both long and short GRBs (addressing also jets with shallow angular energy profiles, whose emission exhibits unique evolution). We present afterglow lightcurves based on our parameterized power-law jet angular profiles for different viewing angles $\theta_{\rm obs}$ and $k=\{0,1,2\}$. We identify a unique evolutionary power-law phase of the characteristic synchrotron frequencies ($\nu_m$ and $\nu_c$) that manifests when the lightcurve is dominated by emission sensitive to the angular structure of the outflow. We calculate the criterion for obtaining single or double peaked light-curves in the general case when $\theta_{c,\Gamma}\neq\theta_{c,\epsilon}$. We emphasize how the shape of the lightcurve and the temporal evolution of $\nu_m$ and $\nu_c$ can be used to constrain the outflow structure and potentially distinguish between magnetic and hydrodynamic jets., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures. Over half a century from the discovery of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), the dominant radiation mechanism responsible for their bright and highly variable prompt emission remains poorly understood. Spectral information alone has proven insufficient for understanding the composition and main energy dissipation mechanism in GRB jets. High-sensitivity polarimetric observations from upcoming instruments in this decade may help answer such key questions in GRB physics. This article reviews the current status of prompt GRB polarization measurements and provides comprehensive predictions from theoretical models. A concise overview of the fundamental questions in prompt GRB physics is provided. Important developments in gamma-ray polarimetry including a critical overview of different past instruments are presented. Theoretical predictions for different radiation mechanisms and jet structures are confronted with time-integrated and time-resolved measurements. The current status and capabilities of upcoming instruments regarding the prompt emission are presented. The very complimentary information that can be obtained from polarimetry of X-ray flares as well as reverse-shock and early to late forward-shock (afterglow) emission is highlighted. The dominant radiation mechanism that produces the prompt emission in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) remains a major open question. Spectral information alone has proven insufficient in elucidating its nature. Time-resolved linear polarization has the potential to distinguish between popular emission mechanisms, e.g., synchrotron radiation from electrons with a power-law energy distribution or inverse Compton scattering of soft seed thermal photons, which can yield the typical GRB spectrum but produce different levels of polarization. Furthermore, it can be used to learn about the outflow's composition (i.e. whether it is kinetic-energy-dominated or Poynting-flux-dominated) and angular structure. For synchrotron emission it is a powerful probe of the magnetic field geometry. Here we consider synchrotron emission from a thin ultrarelativistic outflow, with bulk Lorentz factor $\Gamma(R)=\Gamma_0(R/R_0)^{-m/2}\gg1$, that radiates a Band-function spectrum in a single (multiple) pulse(s) over a range of radii, $R_0\leq R\leq R_0+\Delta R$. Pulse profiles and polarization evolution at a given energy are presented for a coasting ($m=0$) and accelerating ($m=-2/3$) thin spherical shell and for an off-axis top-hat jet with sharp as well as smooth edges in emissivity. Four different magnetic field configurations are considered, such as a locally ordered field coherent over angular scales $\theta_B\gtrsim1/\Gamma$, a tangled field ($B_\perp$) in the plane transverse to the radial direction, an ordered field ($B_\parallel$) aligned in the radial direction, and a globally ordered toroidal field ($B_{\rm tor}$). The transition from prompt to the afterglow emission is one of the most exciting and least understood phases in gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Correlations among optical, X-ray and gamma-ray emission in GRBs have been explored, to attempt to answer whether the earliest optical emission comes from internal and/or external shocks. We present optical photometric observations of GRB 180325A collected with the TAROT and RATIR ground-based telescopes. These observations show two strong optical flashes with separate peaks at $\sim50\;$s and $\sim120\;$s, followed by a temporally extended optical emission. We also present X-rays and gamma-ray observations of GRB 180325A, detected by the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) and X-ray Telescope (XRT), on the Neil Gehrels Swift observatory, which both observed a narrow flash at $\sim80\;$s. We show that the prompt gamma- and X-ray early emission shares similar temporal and spectral features consistent with internal dissipation within the relativistic outflow (e.g. by internal shocks or magnetic reconnection), while the early optical flashes are likely generated by the reverse shock that decelerates the ejecta as it sweeps up the external medium., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Modeling of gamma-ray burst (GRB) prompt emission spectra sometimes requires a (quasi-) thermal spectral component in addition to the Band function. In photospheric emission models, a prominent thermal component broadened by sub-photospheric dissipation is expected to be released at the photospheric radius, $r_{\rm ph}\sim10^{12}\,$cm. We consider an ultra-relativistic strongly magnetized outflow with a striped-wind magnetic-field structure undergoing gradual and continuous magnetic energy dissipation at $r

Spectral modification of energetic magnetar flares by resonant cyclotron scattering (RCS) is considered. During energetic flares, photons emitted from the magnetically-trapped fireball near the stellar surface should resonantly interact with magnetospheric electrons or positrons. We show by a simple thought experiment that such scattering particles are expected to move at mildly relativistic speeds along closed magnetic field lines, which would slightly shift the incident photon energy due to the Doppler effect. We develop a toy model for the spectral modification by a single RCS that incorporates both a realistic seed photon spectrum from the trapped fireball and the velocity field of particles, which is unique to the flaring magnetosphere. We show that our spectral model can be effectively characterized by a single parameter; the effective temperature of the fireball, which enables us to fit observed spectra with low computational cost. We demonstrate that our single scattering model is in remarkable agreement with Swift/BAT data of intermediate flares from SGR 1900+14, corresponding to effective fireball temperatures of $T_{\rm eff}=6$-$7$ keV, whereas BeppoSAX/GRBM data of giant flares from the same source may need more elaborate models including the effect of multiple scatterings. Nevertheless, since there is no standard physically-motivated model for magnetar flare spectra, our model could be a useful tool to study magnetar bursts, shedding light on the hidden properties of the flaring magnetosphere., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted to MNRAS; Appendix B is added

GRB 170817A/GW 170817 is the first GRB clearly viewed far from the GRB jet's symmetry axis. Its afterglow was densely monitored over a wide range of frequencies and times. It has been modeled extensively, primarily numerically, and although this endeavour was very fruitful, many of the underlying model parameters remain undetermined. We provide analytic modelling of GRB afterglows observed off-axis, considering jets with a narrow core (of half-opening angle $\theta_{\rm c}$) and power-law wings in energy per unit solid angle ($\epsilon=\epsilon_c\Theta^{-a}$ where $\Theta=[1+(\theta/\theta_{\rm c})^2]^{1/2}$) and initial specific kinetic energy ($\Gamma_0-1=[\Gamma_{\rm c,0}-1]\Theta^{-b}$), as well as briefly discuss Gaussian jets. Our study reveals qualitatively different types of lightcurves that can be viewed in future off-axis GRBs, with either single or double peaks, depending on the jet structure and the viewing angle. Considering the lightcurve shape rather than the absolute normalizations of times and / or fluxes, removes the dependence of the lightcurve on many of the highly degenerate burst parameters. This study can be easily used to determine the underlying jet structure, significantly reduce the effective parameter space for numerical fitting attempts and provide physical insights. As an illustration, we show that for GRB 170817A, there is a strong correlation between the allowed values of $\Gamma_{\rm c,0}$ and $b$, leading to a narrow strip of allowed solutions in the $\Gamma_{\rm c,0}$-$b$ plane above some minimal values $\Gamma_{\rm c,0}\gtrsim 40, b\gtrsim1.2$. Furthermore, the Lorentz factor of the material dominating the early lightcurve can be constrained by three independent techniques to be $\Gamma_{0}(\theta_{\rm min,0})\approx5-7$., Comment: 14 pages, 17 figures. Gamma-ray burst afterglows arise from relativistic collisionless shocks in which the postshock tangled magnetic field $\vec{B}$ is produced by the two-stream and/or Weibel instabilities on plasma skin-depth scales $(c/\omega_p)$. The field is expected to be oriented predominantly within the shock plane ($B_{\perp}$; transverse to the shock normal, $\hat{n}_{\rm{sh}}$), and is often approximated to be completely within it ($B_\parallel\equiv\hat{n}_{\rm{sh}}\,\cdot\,\vec{B}=0$). Current 2D/3D particle-in-cell simulations are limited to short timescales and box sizes $\lesssim10^4(c/\omega_p)\ll R/\Gamma_{\rm{sh}}$ much smaller than the shocked region's comoving width, and cannot probe the asymptotic downstream $\vec{B}$ structure. We constrain the latter using the linear polarization upper limit, $|\Pi|<12\%$, on the radio afterglow of GW170817/GRB170817A. Afterglow polarization depends on the jet's angular structure, our viewing angle, and the $\vec{B}$ structure. In GW170817/GRB170817A the latter can be tightly constrained since the former two are constrained from observations. We model $\vec{B}$ as an isotropic field in 3D that is stretched along $\hat{n}_{\rm{sh}}$ by a factor $\xi\equiv{}B_{\parallel}/B_{\perp}$, whose initial value $\xi_f\equiv{}B_{\parallel,f}/B_{\perp,f}$ describes the field that survives downstream on plasma scales $\ll{}R/\Gamma_{\rm{sh}}$. We calculate $\Pi(\xi_f)$ by integrating over the shocked volume for core-dominated structured jets, with a local Blandford-McKee self-similar radial profile. We find that independent of the exact jet structure, $\vec{B}$ has a finite, but initially sub-dominant, parallel component: $0.57\lesssim\xi_f\lesssim0.89$, making it less anisotropic. While this motivates numerical studies of the asymptotic $\vec{B}$ structure in relativistic collisionless shocks, it may be consistent with turbulence amplified magnetic field., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, Accepted to MNRAS

MAXI J1621-501 is the first Swift/XRT Deep Galactic Plane Survey transient that was followed up with a multitude of space missions (NuSTAR, Swift, Chandra, NICER, INTEGRAL, and MAXI) and ground-based observatories (Gemini, IRSF, and ATCA). The source was discovered with MAXI on 2017 October 19 as a new, unidentified transient. Further observations with NuSTAR revealed 2 Type I X-ray bursts, identifying MAXI J1621-501 as a Low Mass X-ray Binary (LMXB) with a neutron star primary. Overall, 24 Type I bursts were detected from the source during a 15 month period. At energies below 10 keV, the source spectrum was best fit with three components: an absorbed blackbody with kT = 2.3 keV, a cutoff power law with index $\Gamma{}$ = 0.7, and an emission line centered on 6.3 keV. Timing analysis of the X-ray persistent emission and burst data has not revealed coherent pulsations from the source or an orbital period. We identified, however, a super-orbital period $\sim{}$78 days in the source X-ray light curve. This period agrees very well with the theoretically predicted radiative precession period of $\sim{}$82 days. We present ALMA 97.5 GHz total intensity and linear polarization observations of the mm-band afterglow of GRB 190114C spanning 2.2 to 5.2 hours after the burst. We detect linear polarization at the $\approx 5\,\sigma$ level, decreasing from $\Pi=(0.87\pm0.13)\%$ to $(0.60\pm0.19)\%$, and evolving in polarization position angle from $(10\pm5)^\circ$ to $(-44\pm12)^\circ$ during the course of the observations. This represents the first detection of polarized millimeter emission in a $\gamma$-ray burst. We show that the optical and X-ray observations between $0.03$ days and $\sim0.3$ days are consistent with a fast cooling forward shock expanding into a wind environment. However, the optical observations at $\lesssim0.03$ days, as well as the radio and millimeter observations arise from a separate component, which we interpret as emission from the reverse-shocked ejecta. Using the measured linear polarization, we constrain the coherence scale of tangled magnetic fields in the ejecta to an angular size of $\theta_{\rm B} \approx10^{-3}$ radian, while the rotation of the polarization angle rules out the presence of large scale, ordered axisymmetric magnetic fields, and in particular a large scale toroidal field, in the jet., Comment: Published in ApJ Letters

The afterglow of GRB$\,$170817A/GW$\,$170817 was very unusual, slowly rising as $F_\nu\propto{}t_{\rm{}obs}^{0.8}\nu^{-0.6}$, peaking at $t_{\rm{obs,pk}}\sim\,150\;$days, and sharply decaying as $\sim{}t_{\rm{}obs}^{-2.2}$. VLBI observations revealed an unresolved radio afterglow image whose flux centroid moved superluminally with $v_{\rm{app}}\approx4c$, clearly indicating that the afterglow was dominated by a relativistic jet's compact core. Different jet angular structures explained the afterglow lightcurves: Gaussian and steep power-law profiles with narrow core angles $\theta_c\lesssim5^\circ$ and larger viewing angles $\theta_{\rm{}obs}/\theta_c\sim3-5$. However, a top-hat jet (with sharp edges at $\theta=\theta_0$) was ruled out since it appeared to produce an early flux rise much steeper than observed. In this White Paper we present the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies related to Observatory Science targets. These include flaring stars, supernova remnants, accreting white dwarfs, low and high mass X-ray binaries, radio quiet and radio loud active galactic nuclei, tidal disruption events, and gamma-ray bursts. eXTP will be excellently suited to study one common aspect of these objects: their often transient nature. Despite being hard to measure, GRB prompt $\gamma$-ray emission polarization is a valuable probe of the dominant emission mechanism and the outflow's composition and angular structure. During the prompt emission the outflow is ultra-relativistic with Lorentz factors $\Gamma\gg1$. We describe in detail the linear polarization properties of various emission mechanisms: synchrotron radiation from different magnetic field structures (ordered: toroidal $B_{\rm tor}$ or radial $B_\parallel$, and random: normal to the radial direction $B_\perp$), Compton drag, and photospheric emission. We calculate the polarization for different GRB jet angular structures (e.g. top-hat, Gaussian, power-law) and viewing angles $\theta_{\rm obs}$. Synchrotron with $B_\perp$ can produce large polarizations, up to $25\%\lesssim\Pi\lesssim45\%$, for a top-hat jet but only for lines of sight just outside the jet's sharp edge. The same also holds for Compton drag, albeit with a slightly higher overall $\Pi$. Moreover, we demonstrate how $\Gamma$-variations during the GRB or smoother jet edges would significantly reduce $\Pi$. We construct a semi-analytic model for non-dissipative photospheric emission from structured jets. Such emission can produce up to $\Pi\lesssim15\%$ with reasonably high fluences, but this requires steep gradients in $\Gamma(\theta)$. A polarization of $50\%\lesssim\Pi\lesssim65\%$ can robustly be produced only by synchrotron emission from a transverse magnetic field ordered on angles $\gtrsim\!1/\Gamma$ around our line of sight (like a global toroidal field). Therefore, such a model would be strongly favored even by a single secure measurement within this range. We find that such a model would also be favored if $\Pi\gtrsim20\%$ is measured in most GRBs within a large enough sample, by deriving the polarization distribution for our different emission and jet models., Comment: 31 pages, 18 figures. The X-ray to radio afterglow emission of GRB 170817A/GW 170817 so far scales as $F_\nu\propto\nu^{-0.6}t^{0.8}$ with observed frequency and time, consistent with a single power-law segment of the synchrotron spectrum from the external shock going into the ambient medium. This requires the effective isotropic equivalent afterglow shock energy in the visible region to increase as $\sim t^{1.7}$. The two main channels for such an energy increase are (i) \emph{radial}: more energy carried by slower material (in the visible region) gradually catches up with the afterglow shock and energizes it, and (ii) \emph{angular}: more energy in relativistic outflow moving at different angles to our line of sight, whose radiation is initially beamed away from us but its beaming cone gradually reaches our line of sight as it decelerates. One cannot distinguish between these explanations (or combinations of them) using only the X-ray to radio $F_\nu(t)$. Here we demonstrate that the most promising way to break this degeneracy is through afterglow imaging and polarization, by calculating the predicted evolution of the afterglow image (its size, shape and flux centroid) and linear polarization $\Pi(t)$ for different angular and/or radial outflow structures that fit $F_\nu(t)$. We consider two angular profiles -- a Gaussian and a narrow core with power-law wings in energy per solid angle, as well as a (cocoon motivated) (quasi-) spherical flow with radial velocity profile. For a jet viewed off-axis (and a magnetic field produced in the afterglow shock) $\Pi(t)$ peaks when the jet's core becomes visible, at $\approx2t_p$ where the lightcurve peaks at $t_p$, and the image can be elongated with aspect ratios$\;\gtrsim2$. A quasi-spherical flow has an almost circular image and a much lower $\Pi(t)$ (peaking at $\approx t_p$) and flux centroid displacement., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Gamma-ray burst (GRB) jets are narrow, and thus typically point away from us. They are initially ultra-relativistic, causing their prompt $\gamma$-ray and early afterglow emission to be beamed away from us. However, as the jet gradually decelerates its beaming cone widens and eventually reaches our line of sight and the afterglow emission may be detected. Such orphan afterglows were not clearly detected so far. Nevertheless, they should be detected in upcoming optical or radio surveys, and it would be challenging to clearly distinguish between them and other types of transients. Therefore, we perform detailed, realistic calculations of the expected afterglow emission from GRB jets viewed at different angles from the jet's symmetry axis. The dynamics are calculated using 2D relativistic hydrodynamics simulations of jets propagating into different power-law external density profiles, $\rho_{\rm ext}\propto{}R^{-k}$ for $k=0,\,1,\,1.5,\,2$, ranging from a uniform ISM-like medium ($k=0$) to a stratified steady stellar-wind like profile ($k=2$). We calculate radio, optical and X-ray lightcurves, and the evolution of the radio afterglow image size, shape and flux centroid. This may help identify misaligned relativistic jets, whether initially ultra-relativistic and producing a GRB for observers within their beam, or (possibly intrinsically more common) moderately relativistic, in either (i) nearby supernovae Ib/c (some of which are associated with long duration GRBs), or (ii) in binary neutron star mergers, which may produce short duration GRBs, and may also be detected in gravitational waves (e.g. GW$\,$170827/GRB$\,$170817A with a weak prompt $\gamma$-ray emission may harbor an off-axis jet)., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures; accepted to MNRAS; new section added on the scaling of our results with the model parameters and degeneracies

The origin of the high-frequency radio emission detected from several magnetars is poorly understood. In this paper, we report the ~40 GHz properties of SGR J1745-29 as measured using Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) and Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope (GBT) observations between 2013 October 26 and 2014 May 31. Our analysis of a Q-band (45 GHz) GBT observation on 2014 April 10 resulted in the earliest detection of pulsed radio emission at high frequencies (>20 GHz); we found that the average pulse has a singly peaked profile with width ~75 ms (~2% of the 3.764 s pulse period) and an average pulsed flux density of ~100 mJy. We also detected very bright, short (<10 ms) single pulses during ~70% of this neutron star's rotations, and the peak flux densities of these bright pulses follow the same log-normal distribution as measured at 8.5 GHz. Additionally, our analysis of contemporaneous JVLA observations suggest that its 41/44 GHz flux density varied between ~1-4 mJy during this period, with a ~2x change observed on ~20 minute timescales during a JVLA observation on 2014 May 10. Such a drastic change over short time-scales is inconsistent with the radio emission resulting from a shock powered by the magnetar's supersonic motion through the surrounding medium, and instead is dominated by pulsed emission generated in its magnetosphere., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure, 2 tables, published in The Astrophysical Journal

We report the analysis of 5 NuSTAR observations of SGR 1806-20 spread over a year from April 2015 to April 2016, more than 11 years following its Giant Flare (GF) of 2004. The source spin frequency during the NuSTAR observations follows a linear trend with a frequency derivative $\dot{\nu}=(-1.25\pm0.03)\times10^{-12}$ Hz s$^{-1}$, implying a surface dipole equatorial magnetic field $B\approx7.7\times10^{14}$ G. Thus, SGR 1806-20 has finally returned to its historical minimum torque level measured between 1993 and 1998. The source showed strong timing noise for at least 12 years starting in 2000, with $\dot{\nu}$ increasing one order of magnitude between 2005 and 2011, following its 2004 major bursting episode and GF. SGR 1806-20 has not shown strong transient activity since 2009 and we do not find short bursts in the NuSTAR data. The pulse profile is complex with a pulsed fraction of $\sim8\%$ with no indication of energy dependence. The NuSTAR spectra are well fit with an absorbed blackbody, $kT=0.62\pm0.06$ keV, plus a power-law, $\Gamma=1.33\pm0.03$. We find no evidence for variability among the 5 observations, indicating that SGR 1806-20 has reached a persistent and potentially its quiescent X-ray flux level after its 2004 major bursting episode. Extrapolating the NuSTAR model to lower energies, we find that the 0.5-10 keV flux decay follows an exponential form with a characteristic timescale $\tau=543\pm75$ days. Interestingly, the NuSTAR flux in this energy range is a factor of $\sim2$ weaker than the long-term average measured between 1993 and 2003, a behavior also exhibited in SGR $1900+14$. The highly luminous and variable prompt emission in Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) arises in an ultra-relativistic outflow. The exact underlying radiative mechanism shaping its non-thermal spectrum is still uncertain, making it hard to determine the outflow's bulk Lorentz factor $\Gamma$. GRBs with spectral cutoff due to pair production ($\gamma\gamma\to e^+e^-$) at energies $E_c\gtrsim10\;$MeV are extremely useful for inferring $\Gamma$. We find that when the emission region has a high enough compactness, then as it becomes optically thick to scattering, Compton downscattering by non-relativistic $e^\pm$-pairs can shift the spectral cutoff energy well below the self-annihilation threshold, $E_{\rm sa}=\Gamma m_ec^2/(1+z)$. We treat this effect numerically and show that $\Gamma$ obtained assuming $E_c=E_{\rm sa}$ can under-predict its true value by as much as an order of magnitude., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters

The first, long awaited, detection of a gravitational wave (GW) signal from the merger of a binary neutron-star (NS-NS) system was finally achieved (GW$\,$170817), and was also accompanied by an electromagnetic counterpart -- the short-duration GRB 170817A. It occurred in the nearby ($D\approx40\;$Mpc) elliptical galaxy NGC$\,$4993, and showed optical, IR and UV emission from half a day up to weeks after the event, as well as late time X-ray (at $\geq 8.9\;$days) and radio (at $\geq 16.4\;$days) emission. There was a delay of $\Delta t \approx 1.74\;$s between the GW merger chirp signal and the prompt-GRB emission onset, and an upper limit of $\theta_{\rm obs}<28^\circ$ was set on the viewing angle w.r.t the jet's symmetry axis from the GW signal. In this letter we examine some of the implications of these groundbreaking observations. The delay $\Delta t$ sets an upper limit on the prompt-GRB emission radius, $R_\gamma\lesssim 2c\Delta t/(\theta_{\rm obs}-\theta_0)^2$, for a jet with sharp edges at an angle $\theta_0<\theta_{\rm obs}$. GRB 170817A's relatively low isotropic equivalent $\gamma$-ray energy-output may suggest a viewing angle slightly outside the jet's sharp edge, $\theta_{\rm{}obs}-\theta_0\sim(0.05-0.1)(\Gamma/100)^{-1}$, but its peak $\nu{}F_\nu$ photon energy and afterglow emission suggest instead that the jet does not have sharp edges and the prompt emission was dominated by less energetic material along our line of sight, at $\theta_{\rm{}obs}\gtrsim 2\theta_0$. Finally, we consider the type of remnant that is produced by the NS-NS merger and find that a relatively long-lived ($>2\;$s) massive NS is strongly disfavored, while a hyper-massive NS of lifetime $\sim1\;$s appears to be somewhat favored over the direct formation of a black hole., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, minor changes; accepted to ApJL

The short-duration ($\lesssim2\;$s) GRB 170817A in the nearby ($D=40\;$Mpc) elliptical galaxy NGC 4993 is the first electromagnetic counterpart of the first gravitational wave (GW) detection of a binary neutron-star (NS-NS) merger. It was followed by optical, IR, and UV emission from half a day up to weeks after the event, as well as late time X-ray and radio emission. The early UV, optical, and IR emission showed a quasi-thermal spectrum suggestive of radioactive-decay powered kilonova-like emission. Comparison to kilonova models favors the formation of a short-lived ($\sim1\;$s) hypermassive NS, which is also supported by the $\Delta t\approx1.74\;$s delay between the GW chirp signal and the prompt GRB onset. However, the late onset of the X-ray (8.9$\;$days) and radio (16.4$\;$days) emission, together with the low isotropic equivalent $\gamma$-ray energy output ($E_{\rm\gamma,iso}\approx5\times10^{46}\;$erg), strongly suggest emission from a narrow relativistic jet viewed off-axis. Here we set up a general framework for off-axis GRB jet afterglow emission, comparing analytic and numerical approaches, and showing their general predictions for short-hard GRBs that accompany binary NS mergers. The prompt GRB emission suggests a viewing angle well outside the jet's core, and we compare the afterglow lightcurves expected in such a case to the X-ray to radio emission from GRB 170817A. We fit an afterglow off-axis jet model to the X-ray and radio data and find that the observations are explained by a viewing angle $\theta_{\rm obs}\approx16^\circ-26^\circ$, GRB jet energy $E\sim10^{48.5}-10^{49.5}~{\rm erg}$, and external density $n\sim10^{-5}-10^{-1}~{\rm cm}^{-3}$ for a $\xi_e\sim 0.1$ non-thermal electron acceleration efficiency., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures; Minor changes made to text; Fig. 10 now shows results from least-squares fit instead of MCMC simulation; updated references; Submitted to MNRAS

We study the linear and non-linear development of the Kruskal-Schwarzchild Instability in a relativisitically expanding striped wind. This instability is the generalization of Rayleigh-Taylor instability in the presence of a magnetic field. It has been suggested to produce a self-sustained acceleration mechanism in strongly magnetized outflows found in active galactic nuclei, gamma-ray bursts, and micro-quasars. The instability leads to magnetic reconnection, but in contrast with steady-state Sweet-Parker reconnection, the dissipation rate is not limited by the current layer's small aspect ratio. We performed two-dimensional (2D) relativistic magneto-hydrodynamic (RMHD) simulations featuring two cold and highly magnetized ($1\leq\sigma\leq10^{3}$) plasma layers with an anti-parallel magnetic field separated by a thin layer of relativistically hot plasma with a local effective gravity induced by the outflow's acceleration. Our simulations show how the heavier relativistically hot plasma in the reconnecting layer drips out and allows oppositely oriented magnetic field lines to reconnect. The instability's growth rate in the linear regime matches the predictions of linear stability analysis. We find turbulence rather than an ordered bulk flow near the reconnection region, with turbulent velocities up to $\sim0.1$c, largely independent of model parameters. However, the magnetic energy dissipation rate is found to be much slower, corresponding to an effective ordered bulk velocity inflow into the reconnection region $v_{\rm in}=\beta_{\rm in}c$, of $10^{-3}\lesssim\beta_{\rm in}\lesssim 5\times10^{-3}$. This occurs due to the slow evacuation of hot plasma from the current layer, largely because of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability experienced by the dripping plasma. 3D RMHD simulations are needed to further investigate the non-linear regime., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for Publication in MNRAS

We analyzed broad-band X-ray and radio data of the magnetar SGR J1935+2154 taken in the aftermath of its 2014, 2015, and 2016 outbursts. The source soft X-ray spectrum <10 keV is well described with a BB+PL or 2BB model during all three outbursts. NuSTAR observations revealed a hard X-ray tail, $\Gamma=0.9$, extending up to 79 keV, with flux larger than the one detected <10 keV. Imaging analysis of Chandra data did not reveal small-scale extended emission around the source. Following the outbursts, the total 0.5-10 keV flux from SGR J1935+2154 increased in concordance to its bursting activity, with the flux at activation onset increasing by a factor of $\sim7$ following its strongest June 2016 outburst. A Swift/XRT observation taken 1.5 days prior to the onset of this outburst showed a flux level consistent with quiescence. We show that the flux increase is due to the PL or hot BB component, which increased by a factor of $25$ compared to quiescence, while the cold BB component $kT=0.47$ keV remained more or less constant. The 2014 and 2015 outbursts decayed quasi-exponentially with time-scales of $\sim40$ days, while the stronger May and June 2016 outbursts showed a quick short-term decay with time-scales of $\sim4$ days. Our Arecibo radio observations set the deepest limits on the radio emission from a magnetar, with a maximum flux density limit of 14 $\mu$Jy for the 4.6 GHz observations and 7 $\mu$Jy for the 1.4 GHz observations. We have compiled the most comprehensive burst sample from magnetar 4U 0142+61, comprising 27 bursts from its three burst-active episodes in 2011, 2012 and the latest one in 2015 observed with Swift/BAT and Fermi/GBM. Bursts from 4U 0142+61 morphologically resemble typical short bursts from other magnetars. However, 4U 0142+61 bursts are less energetic compared to the bulk of magnetar bursts. We uncovered an extended tail emission following a burst on 2015 February 28, with a thermal nature, cooling over a time-scale of several minutes. During this tail emission, we also uncovered pulse peak phase aligned X-ray bursts , which could originate from the same underlying mechanism as that of the extended burst tail, or an associated and spatially coincident but different mechanism., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The first wind nebula around a magnetar was recently discovered in X-rays around Swift~J1834.9$-$0846. We study this magnetar's global energetics and the properties of its particle wind or outflows. At a distance of $\sim4\;$kpc, Swift~J1834.9$-$0846 is located at the center of the supernova remnant (SNR) W41 whose radius is $\sim 19\;$pc, an order of magnitude larger than that of the X-ray nebula ($\sim2\;$pc). The association with SNR W41 suggests a common age of $\sim5-100\;$kyr, while its spin-down age is $4.9$~kyr. A small natal kick velocity may partly explain why a wind nebula was detected around this magnetar but not around other magnetars, most of which appear to have larger kick velocities and may have exited their birth SNR. We find that the GeV and TeV source detected by Fermi/LAT and H.E.S.S., respectively, of radius $\sim11\;$pc is most likely of hadronic origin. The dynamics and internal structure of the nebula are examined analytically to explain the nebula's current properties. Its size may naturally correspond to the diffusion-dominated cooling length of the X-ray emitting $e^+e^-$ pairs. This may also account for the spectral softening of the X-ray emission from the nebula's inner to outer parts. Analysis of the X-ray synchrotron nebula implies that (i) the nebular magnetic field is $\gtrsim 11\;\mu$G (and likely $\lesssim30\;\mu$G), and (ii) the nebula is not powered predominantly by the magnetar's quiescent spin-down-powered MHD wind, but by other outflows that contribute most of its energy. The latter are most likely associated with the magnetar's bursting activity, and possibly dominated by outflows associated with its past giant flares. The energy source for the required outflows cannot be the decay of the magnetar's dipole field alone, and is most likely the decay of its much stronger internal magnetic field., Comment: 33 pages, 15 figures. The dissipation mechanism that powers gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) remains uncertain almost half a century after their discovery. The two main competing mechanisms are the extensively studied internal shocks and the less studied magnetic reconnection. Here we consider GRB emission from magnetic reconnection accounting for the relativistic bulk motions that it produces in the jet's bulk rest frame. Far from the source the magnetic field is almost exactly normal to the radial direction, suggesting locally quasi-spherical thin reconnection layers between regions of oppositely directed magnetic field. We show that if the relativistic motions in the jet's frame are confined to such a quasi-spherical uniform layer, then the resulting GRB lightcurves are independent of their direction distribution within this layer. This renders previous results for a delta-function velocity-direction distribution (Beniamini & Granot 2016) applicable to a much more general class of reconnection models, which are suggested by numerical simulations. Such models that vary in their velocity-direction distribution differ mainly in the size of the bright region that contributes most of the observed flux at a given emission radius or observed time. The more sharply peaked this distribution, the smaller this bright region, and the stronger the lightcurve variability that may be induced by deviations from a uniform emission over the thin reconnection layer, which may be expected in a realistic GRB outflow. This is reflected both in the observed image at a given observed time and in the observer-frame emissivity map at a given emission radius, which are calculated here for three simple velocity-direction distributions., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The energy dissipation mechanism within Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) outflows, driving their extremely luminous prompt $\gamma$-ray emission is still uncertain. The leading candidates are internal shocks and magnetic reconnection. While the emission from internal shocks has been extensively studied, that from reconnection still has few quantitative predictions. We study the expected prompt-GRB emission from magnetic reconnection and compare its temporal and spectral properties to observations. The main difference from internal shocks is that for reconnection one expects relativistic bulk motions with Lorentz factors $\Gamma'\gtrsim\;$a few in the jet's bulk frame. We consider such motions of the emitting material in two anti-parallel directions (e.g. of the reconnecting magnetic-field lines) within an ultra-relativistic (with $\Gamma\gg1$) thin spherical reconnection layer. Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are the strongest explosions in the Universe, which due to their extreme character likely involve some of the strongest magnetic fields in nature. This review discusses the possible roles of magnetic fields in GRBs, from their central engines, through the launching, acceleration and collimation of their ultra-relativistic jets, to the dissipation and particle acceleration that power their $\gamma$-ray emission, and the powerful blast wave they drive into the surrounding medium that generates their long-lived afterglow emission. The duration distribution of long Gamma Ray Bursts reveals a plateau at durations shorter than ~20 s (in the observer frame) and a power-law decline at longer durations (Bromberg et al., 2012). Such a plateau arises naturally in the Collapsar model. In this model the engine has to operate long enough to push the jet out of the stellar envelope and the observed duration of the burst is the difference between the engine's operation time and the jet breakout time. We compare the jet breakout time inferred from the duration distribution (~10 s in the burst's frame) to the breakout time of a hydrodynamic jet (~10 s for typical parameters) and of a Poynting flux dominated jet with the same overall energy (<~1 s). As only the former is compatible with the duration of the plateau in the GRB duration distribution, we conclude that the jet is hydrodynamic during most of the time that its head is within the envelope of the progenitor star and around the time when it emerges from the star. This would naturally arise if the jet forms as a hydrodynamic jet in the first place or if it forms Poynting flux dominated but dissipates most of its magnetic energy early on within the progenitor star and emerges as a hydrodynamic jet., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures

The discovery of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in magnetar giant flares has opened up prospects for neutron star asteroseismology. The scarcity of giant flares makes a search for QPOs in the shorter, far more numerous bursts from Soft Gamma Repeaters (SGRs) desirable. In Huppenkothen et al (2013), we developed a Bayesian method for searching for QPOs in short magnetar bursts, taking into account the effects of the complicated burst structure, and have shown its feasibility on a small sample of bursts. Here, we apply the same method to a much larger sample from a burst storm of 286 bursts from SGR J1550-5418. We report a candidate signal at 260 Hz in a search of the individual bursts, which is fairly broad. We also find two QPOs at 93 Hz and one at 127 Hz, when averaging periodograms from a number of bursts in individual triggers, at frequencies close to QPOs previously observed in magnetar giant flares. Finally, for the first time, we explore the overall burst variability in the sample, and report a weak anti-correlation between the power-law index of the broadband model characterising aperiodic burst variability, and the burst duration: shorter bursts have steeper power law indices than longer bursts. The collapsar model explains the association of long duration gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) with stellar collapse. It involves a relativistic jet that forms at the core of a collapsing massive star. The jet penetrates the stellar envelope and the prompt GRB emission is produced once the jet is well outside the star. Most current models for generation of relativistic jets involve Poynting flux dominated outflows. We explore here the propagation of such a jet through a stellar envelope. The jet forms a bow shock around it. Energy dissipation at the head of this shock supplies energy to a cocoon that surrounds the jet. This cocoon exerts pressure on the jet and collimates it. While this description resembles the propagation of a hydrodynamic jets there are significant qualitative differences. Two Strong shocks, the reverse shock that slows down the hydrodynamic jet and the collimation shock that collimates it, cannot form within the Poynting flux dominated jet. As a result this jet moves much faster and dissipates much less energy while it crosses the stellar envelope. We construct here a simple analytic model that explores, self consistently, the jet-cocoon interaction and dynamics. Some Quantum Gravity (QG) theories allow for a violation of Lorentz invariance (LIV), manifesting as a dependence of the velocity of light in vacuum on its energy. If such a dependence exists, then photons of different energies emitted together by a distant source will arrive at the Earth at different times. High-energy (GeV) transient emissions from distant astrophysical sources such as Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) and Active Galaxy Nuclei can be used to search for and constrain LIV. The Fermi collaboration has previously analyzed two GRBs in order to put constraints on the dispersion parameter in vacuum, and on the energy scale at which QG effects causing LIV may arise. We used three different methods on four bright GRBs observed by the Fermi-LAT to get more stringent and robust constraints. In order to discern the physical nature of many gamma-ray sources in the sky, we must look not only in spectral and spatial dimensions, but also understand their temporal variability. However, timing analysis of sources with a highly transient nature, such as magnetar bursts, is difficult: standard Fourier techniques developed for long-term variability generally observed, for example, from AGN often do not apply. Here, we present newly developed timing methods applicable to transient events of all kinds, and show their successful application to magnetar bursts observed with Fermi/GBM. Magnetars are a prime subject for timing studies, thanks to the detection of quasi-periodicities in magnetar Giant Flares and their potential to help shed light on the structure of neutron stars. Using state-of-the art statistical techniques, we search for quasi-periodicities (QPOs) in a sample of bursts from Soft Gamma Repeater SGR J0501+4516 observed with Fermi/GBM and provide upper limits for potential QPO detections. Additionally, for the first time, we characterise the broadband variability behaviour of magnetar bursts and highlight how this new information could provide us with another way to probe these mysterious objects., Comment: 2012 Fermi Symposium proceedings - eConf C121028

We outline the science prospects for gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), the next-generation ground-based gamma-ray observatory operating at energies above few tens of GeV. With its low energy threshold, large effective area and rapid slewing capabilities, CTA will be able to measure the spectra and variability of GRBs at multi-GeV energies with unprecedented photon statistics, and thereby break new ground in elucidating the physics of GRBs, which is still poorly understood. Such measurements will also provide crucial diagnostics of ultra-high-energy cosmic ray and neutrino production in GRBs, advance observational cosmology by probing the high-redshift extragalactic background light and intergalactic magnetic fields, and contribute to fundamental physics by testing Lorentz invariance violation with high precision. Aiming to quantify these goals, we present some simulated observations of GRB spectra and light curves, together with estimates of their detection rates with CTA. Although the expected detection rate is modest, of order a few GRBs per year, hundreds or more high-energy photons per burst may be attainable once they are detected. We also address various issues related to following up alerts from satellites and other facilities with CTA, as well as follow-up observations at other wavelengths. The discovery of quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in magnetar giant flares has opened up prospects for neutron star asteroseismology. However, with only three giant flares ever recorded, and only two with data of sufficient quality to search for QPOs, such analysis is seriously data limited. We set out a procedure for doing QPO searches in the far more numerous, short, less energetic magnetar bursts. The short, transient nature of these bursts requires the implementation of sophisticated statistical techniques to make reliable inferences. Using Bayesian statistics, we model the periodogram as a combination of red noise at low frequencies and white noise at high frequencies, which we show is a conservative approach to the problem. We use empirical models to make inferences about the potential signature of periodic and quasi-periodic oscillations at these frequencies. We compare our method with previously used techniques and find that although it is on the whole more conservative, it is also more reliable in ruling out false positives. We illustrate our Bayesian method by applying it to a sample of 27 bursts from the magnetar SGR J0501+4516 observed by the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor, and we find no evidence for the presence of QPOs in any of the bursts in the unbinned spectra, but do find a candidate detection in the binned spectra of one burst. However, whether this signal is due to a genuine quasi-periodic process, or can be attributed to unmodeled effects in the noise is at this point a matter of interpretation., Comment: 28 pages, 17 figures, ApJ in press

We present the results of our broadband spectral analysis of 42 SGR J1550-5418 bursts simultaneously detected with the Swift/X-ray Telescope (XRT) and the Fermi/Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM), during the 2009 January active episode of the source. The unique spectral and temporal capabilities of the XRT Windowed Timing mode have allowed us to extend the GBM spectral coverage for these events down to the X-ray domain (0.5-10 keV). Our earlier analysis of the GBM data found that the SGR J1550-5418 burst spectra were described equally well with a Comptonized model or with two blackbody functions; the two models were statistically indistinguishable. Our new broadband (0.5 - 200 keV) spectral fits show that, on average, the burst spectra are better described with two blackbody functions than with the Comptonized model. Thus, our joint XRT/GBM analysis clearly shows for the first time that the SGR J1550-5418 burst spectra might naturally be expected to exhibit a more truly thermalized character, such as a two-blackbody or even a multi-blackbody signal. Using the Swift and RXTE timing ephemeris for SGR J1550-5418 we construct the distribution of the XRT burst counts with spin phase and find that it is not correlated with the persistent X-ray emission pulse phase from SGR J1550-5418. These results indicate that the burst emitting sites on the neutron star need not be co-located with hot spots emitting the bulk of the persistent X-ray emission. Finally, we show that there is a significant pulse phase dependence of the XRT burst counts, likely demonstrating that the surface magnetic field of SGR J1550-5418 is not uniform over the emission zone, since it is anticipated that regions with stronger surface magnetic field could trigger bursts more efficiently., Comment: accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

In early October 2008, the Soft Gamma Repeater SGRJ1550 - 5418 (1E 1547.0 - 5408, AXJ155052 - 5418, PSR J1550 - 5418) became active, emitting a series of bursts which triggered the Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) after which a second especially intense activity period commenced in 2009 January and a third, less active period was detected in 2009 March-April. Here we analyze the GBM data all the bursts from the first and last active episodes. We performed temporal and spectral analysis for all events and found that their temporal characteristics are very similar to the ones of other SGR bursts, as well the ones reported for the bursts of the main episode (average burst durations \sim 170 ms). In addition, we used our sample of bursts to quantify the systematic uncertainties of the GBM location algorithm for soft gamma-ray transients to < 8 deg. Our spectral analysis indicates significant spectral evolution between the first and last set of events. Although the 2008 October events are best fit with a single blackbody function, for the 2009 bursts an Optically Thin Thermal Bremsstrahlung (OTTB) is clearly preferred. We attribute this evolution to changes in the magnetic field topology of the source, possibly due to effects following the very energetic main bursting episode., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

The dynamical equations describing the evolution of a physical system generally have a freedom in the choice of units, where different choices correspond to different physical systems that are described by the same equations. Since there are three basic physical units, of mass, length and time, there are up to three free parameters in such a rescaling of the units, $N_f \leq 3$. In Newtonian hydrodynamics, e.g., there are indeed usually three free parameters, $N_f = 3$. If, however, the dynamical equations contain a universal dimensional constant, such as the speed of light in vacuum $c$ or the gravitational constant $G$, then the requirement that its value remains the same imposes a constraint on the rescaling, which reduces its number of free parameters by one, to $N_f = 2$. This is the case, for example, in magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) or special relativistic hydrodynamics, where $c$ appears in the dynamical equations and forces the length and time units to scale by the same factor, or in Newtonian gravity where the gravitational constant $G$ appears in the equations. More generally, when there are $N_{udc}$ independent (in terms of their units) universal dimensional constants, then the number of free parameters is $N_f = max(0,3-N_{udc})$. When both gravity and relativity are included, there is only one free parameter ($N_f = 1$, as both $G$ and $c$ appear in the equations so that $N_{udc} = 2$), and the units of mass, length and time must all scale by the same factor. The explicit rescalings for different types of systems are discussed and summarized here. Such rescalings of the units also hold for discrete particles, e.g. in N-body or particle in cell simulations. We report on the development of Mezcal-SRHD, a new adaptive mesh refinement, special relativistic hydrodynamics (SRHD) code, developed with the aim of studying the highly relativistic flows in Gamma-Ray Burst sources. The SRHD equations are solved using finite volume conservative solvers. The correct implementation of the algorithms is verified by one-dimensional (1D) shock tube and multidimensional tests. The code is then applied to study the propagation of 1D spherical impulsive blast waves expanding in a stratified medium with $\rho \propto r^{-k}$, bridging between the relativistic and Newtonian phases, as well as to a two-dimensional (2D) cylindrically symmetric impulsive jet propagating in a constant density medium. It is shown that the deceleration to non-relativistic speeds in one-dimension occurs on scales significantly larger than the Sedov length. This transition is further delayed with respect to the Sedov length as the degree of stratification of the ambient medium is increased. This result, together with the scaling of position, Lorentz factor and the shock velocity as a function of time and shock radius, is explained here using a simple analytical model based on energy conservation. The method used for calculating the afterglow radiation by post-processing the results of the simulations is described in detail. The light curves computed using the results of 1D numerical simulations during the relativistic stage correctly reproduce those calculated assuming the self-similar Blandford-McKee solution for the evolution of the flow. The jet dynamics from our 2D simulations and the resulting afterglow lightcurves, including the jet break, are in good agreement with those presented in previous works.
