8. Time, Frequency & Time-Varying Causality Measures in Neuroscience

Abstract

This article proposes a systematic methodological review and objective criticism of existing methods enabling the derivation of time-varying Granger-causality statistics in neuroscience. The increasing interest and the huge number of publications related to this topic calls for this systematic review which describes the very complex methodological aspects. The capacity to describe the causal links between signals recorded at different brain locations during a neuroscience experiment is of primary interest for neuroscientists, who often have very precise prior hypotheses about the relationships between recorded brain signals that arise at a specific time and in a specific frequency band. The ability to compute a time-varying frequency-specific causality statistic is therefore essential. Two steps are necessary to achieve this: the first consists of finding a statistic that can be interpreted and that directly answers the question of interest. The second concerns the model that underlies the causality statistic and that has this time-frequency specific causality interpretation. In this article, we will review Granger-causality statistics with their spectral and time-varying extensions.

9. Multiscale Bayesian State Space Model for Granger Causality Analysis of Brain Signal

Abstract

Modelling time-varying and frequency-specific relationships between two brain signals is becoming an essential methodological tool to answer heoretical questions in experimental neuroscience. In this article, we propose to estimate a frequency Granger causality statistic that may vary in time in order to evaluate the functional connections between two brain regions during a task. We use for that purpose an adaptive Kalman filter type of estimator of a linear Gaussian vector autoregressive model with coefficients evolving over time. The estimation procedure is achieved through variational Bayesian approximation and is extended for multiple trials. This Bayesian State Space (BSS) model provides a dynamical Granger-causality statistic that is quite natural. We propose to extend the BSS model to include the \`{a} trous Haar decomposition. This wavelet-based forecasting method is based on a multiscale resolution decomposition of the signal using the redundant \`{a} trous wavelet transform and allows us to capture short- and long-range dependencies between signals. Equally importantly it allows us to derive the desired dynamical and frequency-specific Granger-causality statistic. The application of these models to intracranial local field potential data recorded during a psychological experimental task shows the complex frequency based cross-talk between amygdala and medial orbito-frontal cortex. Abstract

The growing interest in physically deposited model catalysts for uncovering complex structure‐activity relationships is spurred by the possibility of depositing nanoparticles of precise atomic structure and composition using cluster‐beam sources. However, the limitations accompanying these synthesis techniques, such as low deposition rates and flat sample geometry, present a challenge for in situ structural characterization using bulk‐sensitive methods, such as X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), especially at elevated pressures (1–100 bar). To overcome this challenge, we constructed an in situ XAS cell operating in a grazing incidence (GI) geometry. The GIXAS cell was used to investigate the structure of cluster‐beam‐generated Pd and Au0.3Ag0.7 nanoparticles under CO2‐to‐methanol hydrogenation conditions (230 °C, 20 bar, CO2:H2=1 : 3). These nanoparticles, with metal loading of 0.96–10 μg cm−2, demonstrated stability and resistance to sintering upon activation in H2 at 120 °C and catalytic conditions, revealed by in situ XAS. The promising results from our work will help bridge the gap in the investigation of model catalytic materials produced by gas‐phase cluster deposition at industrially relevant pressures and temperatures, which is vital for a mechanistic understanding of catalytic processes. Abstract

Music is ubiquitous, both in its instrumental and vocal forms. While speech perception at birth has been at the core of an extensive corpus of research, the origins of the ability to discriminate instrumental or vocal melodies is still not well investigated. In previous studies comparing vocal and musical perception, the vocal stimuli were mainly related to speaking, including language, and not to the non‐language singing voice. In the present study, to better compare a melodic instrumental line with the voice, we used singing as a comparison stimulus, to reduce the dissimilarities between the two stimuli as much as possible, separating language perception from vocal musical perception. In the present study, 45 newborns were scanned, 10 full‐term born infants and 35 preterm infants at term‐equivalent age (mean gestational age at test = 40.17 weeks, SD = 0.44) using functional magnetic resonance imaging while listening to five melodies played by a musical instrument (flute) or sung by a female voice. To examine the dynamic task‐based effective connectivity, we employed a psychophysiological interaction of co‐activation patterns (PPI‐CAPs) analysis, using the auditory cortices as seed region, to investigate moment‐to‐moment changes in task‐driven modulation of cortical activity during an fMRI task. Our findings reveal condition‐specific, dynamically occurring patterns of co‐activation (PPI‐CAPs). During the vocal condition, the auditory cortex co‐activates with the sensorimotor and salience networks, while during the instrumental condition, it co‐activates with the visual cortex and the superior frontal cortex. Our results show that the vocal stimulus elicits sensorimotor aspects of the auditory perception and is processed as a more salient stimulus while the instrumental condition activated higher‐order cognitive and visuo‐spatial networks. Common neural signatures for both auditory stimuli were found in the precuneus and posterior cingulate gyrus. Finally, this study adds knowledge on the dynamic brain connectivity underlying the newborns capability of early and specialized auditory processing, highlighting the relevance of dynamic approaches to study brain function in newborn populations. Abstract

Small metal oligomers have gained significant attention due to their exceptional optoelectronic properties and versatile applications, ranging from sensors to imaging and catalysis. However, the need for matrices (silica, zeolites, or metal‐organic frameworks) to prevent aggregation into larger metallic particles reduces their potential applicability in light‐emitting devices (LEDs) due to their poor electrical properties. To address this issue, a novel semiconductor stabilizer, titanosilicate, is proposed as an innovative solution for Ag‐based luminescent materials. These results show that titanosilicate, characterized by high thermochemical stability and well‐defined semiconducting properties, is an ideal scaffold for Ag‐luminescent species. Optical spectroscopic techniques reveal that Ag‐titanosilicates feature an orange fluorescence with a photoluminescence quantum yield reaching 20%. In contrast, a combination of X‐ray diffraction, TEM, and XEOL‐X‐ray absorption spectroscopic techniques show that, unlike zeolites, the luminescent species consist of single Ag atoms. The electroluminescent properties of the proposed Ag‐titanosilicate are further investigated within a conventional LED architecture by using the new material as an emissive layer. The developed proof‐of‐concept LED exhibits a significant improvement of the ZEOLEDs, where a smaller low turn‐on voltage of 2 V (enabling energy‐efficient operation) and high color rendering index of 80 introduces exciting prospects for developing advanced Ag‐LED phosphors.
