Simple Summary: There are increasing problems with both lameness and congestive heart failure in heavy, grain-fed steers and heifers. An inspection of hearts at the slaughter plant indicated that increasing numbers of these cattle have abnormally swollen hearts. This may increase death losses late in the feeding period. Lameness and hoof abnormalities in fed cattle have also increased. There is a possible relationship between both of these conditions and genetic selection for economically important meat traits. There has also been an increasing occurrence of abnormal hoof structure and poor leg conformation. The present review has two objectives, the first is to investigate the differences in temperament between Bos indicus and Bos taurus breeds and determining the effects on production due to positive treatment and to compare this with negative HAR, by using the Five Domain Model as framework. The second objective is to discuss potential strategies to achieve better HAR when working with Bos indicus cattle. Bos indicus are more reactive and temperamental than Bos taurus cattle. When human animal relationships (HAR) are evaluated, Bos indicus cattle may react with greater intensity. They may be more likely to develop a negative emotional state, especially in extensively raised Bos indicus cattle that are handled only a few times each year. Bos indicus cattle can have positive emotional states when they have frequent positive interactions with people. Interactions with people, both positive and negative, would be in the fourth Domain of the Five Domains model. Cattle that are more reactive during handling may also have lower weight gain, even when they have abundant feed. This would be in the first Domain of Nutrition. When cattle are handled in races and corrals, injuries may be more likely to occur. Injuries and bruises would be in the third Domain of Health. Injuries could be caused by either poor handling practices by people or poor handling facilities. Yelling or electric prod use would be examples of poor HAR. To develop cow–calf bonding, several olfactory, tactile, auditory, and visual cues need to be interchanged and processed by both the mother and the newborn. Sniffing, licking, grooming, and listening to the calf's vocalizations are the first inputs during calving. Oxytocin is the main hormone that mediates selective maternal behavior. Understanding the importance of the sensitive period and the endocrine changes required to elicit maternal behavior could help provide the appropriate stimulus to both the buffalo cow and the calf during calving. The cow–calf bonding is a process that must be developed within the first six hours after calving. Both the buffalo dam and the newborn calf receive a series of sensory cues during calving, including olfactory, tactile, auditory, and visual stimuli. These inputs are processed in the brain to develop an exclusive bond where the dam provides selective care to the filial newborn. The limbic system, sensory cortices, and maternal-related hormones such as oxytocin mediate this process. Due to the complex integration of the maternal response towards the newborn, this paper aims to review the development of the cow–calf bonding process in water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) via the olfactory, tactile, auditory, and visual stimuli. The author is an associate professor of animal studies at Colorado State University, but experienced learning difficulties in high school due to her place on the autism-Asperger's spectrum. She had uneven skills, and while algebra was impossible, she did well in courses in which she could use her visual-thinking and associative-thinking skills. Her visual thinking skills enabled her to excel at her chosen career of designing livestock equipment. The author describes how visual thinkers like her are good at hands-on work. While she finds mathematical word problems to be difficult, she can conceptualize research experiments only if she has a concrete example such as a weight gain and different breeds of cattle. She cannot think about experimental designs in the abstract. Her success in her career ensued not because she "overcame a math deficit," but because she developed her area of strength -- visualization. There are three basic thinking types: visual thinkers, pattern thinkers, and word specialists, and these thinking styles also occur in individuals with dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning problems. An autism researcher found that autistic children have difficulty making up new categories for objects. However, flexibility of thinking can be taught. The author expresses concern when courses in music, woodshop, auto mechanics, and elective classes are no longer offered because these are the types of courses in which many students with uneven skills will excel and make themselves employable in good jobs. One size does not fit all, and different people have different types of thinking. The really good teachers try different methods and use the one that works for a particular child.
