Abstract

Ferroelectric domain walls are promising quasi-2D structures that can be leveraged for miniaturization of electronics components and new mechanisms to control electronic signals at the nanoscale. Despite the significant progress in experiment and theory, however, most investigations on ferroelectric domain walls are still on a fundamental level, and reliable characterization of emergent transport phenomena remains a challenging task. Here, we apply a neural-network-based approach to regularize local I(V)-spectroscopy measurements and improve the information extraction, using data recorded at charged domain walls in hexagonal (Er0.99,Zr0.01)MnO3 as an instructive example. Using a sparse long short-term memory autoencoder, we disentangle competing conductivity signals both spatially and as a function of voltage, facilitating a less biased, unconstrained and more accurate analysis compared to a standard evaluation of conductance maps. The neural-network-based analysis allows us to isolate extrinsic signals that relate to the tip-sample contact and separating them from the intrinsic transport behavior associated with the ferroelectric domain walls in (Er0.99,Zr0.01)MnO3. Our work expands machine-learning-assisted scanning probe microscopy studies into the realm of local conductance measurements, improving the extraction of physical conduction mechanisms and separation of interfering current signals.

Abstract

Goldstone modes are massless particles resulting from spontaneous symmetry breaking. Although such modes are found in elementary particle physics as well as in condensed matter systems like superfluid helium, superconductors and magnons - structural Goldstone modes are rare. Epitaxial strain in thin films can induce structures and properties not accessible in bulk and has been intensively studied for (001)-oriented perovskite oxides. Here we predict Goldstone-like phonon modes in (111)-strained SrMnO3 by first-principles calculations. Under compressive strain the coupling between two in-plane rotational instabilities give rise to a Mexican hat shaped energy surface characteristic of a Goldstone mode. Conversely, large tensile strain induces in-plane polar instabilities with no directional preference, giving rise to a continuous polar ground state. Such phonon modes with U(1) symmetry could emulate structural condensed matter Higgs modes. The mass of this Higgs boson, given by the shape of the Mexican hat energy surface, can be tuned by strain through proper choice of substrate., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

14. Epitaxial (100), (110), and (111) BaTiO3 films on SrTiO3 substrates—A transmission electron microscopy study.

Abstract

Chemical solution deposition (CSD) is a versatile method to fabricate oxide films. Here, the structure and local variations in the chemical composition of BaTiO 3 (BTO) films prepared by CSD on (100), (110), and (111) SrTiO 3 (STO) substrates were examined by transmission electron microscopy. The films were shown to be epitaxial and the relaxation of the films occurred by the formation of edge dislocations at the substrate–film interfaces. The Burgers vectors of the dislocations were determined to be a ⟨ 010 ⟩ , a [ 1 1 ¯ 0 ] and a [ 001 ] , and a ⟨ 110 ⟩ for the (100), (110), and (111) films, respectively. Due to the difference in thermal expansion between STO and BTO, the films are demonstrated to be under tensile strain. Furthermore, the boundaries between each deposited layer in the BTO films were found to be Ba-deficient in all cases. In the case of the (111) oriented film, defects like an anti-phase boundary or a thin layer with a twinned crystal structure were identified at the boundary between each deposited layer. Moreover, a larger grain was observed at the film surface with a twinned crystal structure. The interdiffusion length of A-cations at the STO–BTO interface, studied by electron energy-loss spectroscopy, was found to be 3.4, 5.3, and 5.3 nm for the (100), (110), and (111) oriented films, respectively. Interdiffusion of cations across the STO–BTO interface was discussed in relation to cation diffusion in bulk BTO and STO. Despite the presence of imperfections demonstrated in this work, the films possess excellent ferroelectric properties, meaning that none of the imperfections are detrimental to the ferroelectric properties. Abstract

Background Work stress is a common problem among the health personnel of the Spanish National Health System. The objective of this paper is to assess the state of mindfulness among Spanish primary care providers and to evaluate its potential relationship with work stress and basic labor and sociodemographic characteristics. Methods Cross-sectional, multi-centric study. Primary care nurses, teachers, teaching collaborators and residents assigned to six Spanish Family Medicine/Family and Community Care Departments were invited to participate (n = 475). A template was designed in Google Forms, including sociodemographic and work-related variables. The state of mindfulness was measured with the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), while work-related stress was measured using an ordinal scale ranging from 0 to 10 points. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were carried out, as well as bivariate and multivariate statistics. Results The mean age of participants was 40,14 ± 13.12 (range:23–65 years); 66.9% were women, 42.5% internal medicine residents, 29.3% family physicians, and 20.2% nurses. More than half (54.5%) knew about mindfulness, with 24.0% have received training on it, and 22.5% were usual practitioners. The average level of mindfulness was 127.18 ± 15.45 (range: 89–177). The average score of stress at work was 6.00 ± 2.44; 49.9% (range: 0–10). 49.9% of participants scored 7 or more on the stress at work scale. There was an inverse correlation between the levels of mindfulness (FFMQ total score) and work-related stress (Spearman’s r = − 0.155, p = 0.003). Significant relationships between the mindfulness practice and the level of mindfulness (F = 29.80, p p = 0.042), were also found. Conclusions Levels of mindfulness in primary care health providers were in line with those levels observed in other groups of health professionals. Half of all of the primary care providers suffered from a high degree of stress. Although weak, inverse relationships were observed between levels of mindfulness and stress at work, with lower values of stress at work among those who practiced mindfulness.
