The geothermal potential of the Kingia aquifer in the northern Perth Basin has been identified. In order to further assess resource potential, the occurrence, conditions, and properties of the Kingia Sandstone have been considered further. A new regional correlation supports the Kingia Sandstone being a regionally extensive unit deposited along the northern margin of the syn-depositional Dandaragan Trough. The unit is part of a falling-stage to lowstand system containing lower and upper shoreface, coastal, beach, and estuarine sands. Gross Kingia Sandstone thickness varies from 16 m on flanking terraces to at least 71 m in the basin depocenter. At depth, reservoir properties are preserved where iron-rich clay grain coatings inhibit cementation and preserve primary porosity. In such cases, net reservoir ranges from 3 to 58 m thick (18 m mean) and net porosity range is 12–19 p.u. (15 p.u. mean). The prevailing geothermal gradient is ~37°C/km with heat flow in excess of 90 mW/m2. Resultant Kingia aquifer temperatures exceed 115°C. Given the presence of hot, porous Kingia aquifer, the potential for geothermal power generation is strong. Production of Kingia brine to surface facilities allows for power conversion via established binary Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology. A scalable Kingia opportunity could help to meet Western Australia’s decarbonisation aspirations by contributing to the replacement of coal-fired and gas-fired power plants, plus supply of low-carbon power to local urea, hydrogen, and gas projects. An enhanced understanding of Kingia porosity distribution, reservoir compartmentalisation, flow performance, and ultimate energy delivery remain key uncertainties subject to future de-risking activities.

Coastal Indigenous and Traditional communities are starting to see changes to their lives from climate change, whether this is from species range changes or displacement from land changes. For many of these communities, the ability to adequately adapt to these changes is limited by the governance structures they are required to live within, which differ from their customary practices and culture. In November 2019, a group of Indigenous and Traditional Peoples, attended the Future Seas 2030 workshop and discussed the consequences of climate change, the biggest barriers for their communities, and barriers for using traditional knowledge in order to contribute towards a more sustainable future that in the end will benefit all of earth’s people. The aim of this workshop was to highlight and give a voice to the various backgrounds and real-life situations impacting on some of the world’s Indigenous and Traditional communities whose connection with the oceans and coasts have been disrupted. This paper presents these issues of oppression, colonisation, language and agency, making it difficult for these groups to contribute to the current management of oceans and coasts, and asks scientists and practitioners in this space to be allies and enable the needed shift to earth’s guardians taking a leading role in nurturing her for our future.

Objectives The psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on doctors is a significant concern. Due to the emergence of multiple pandemic waves, longitudinal data on the impact of COVID-19 are vital to ensure an adequate psychological care response. The primary aim was to assess the prevalence and degree of psychological distress and trauma in frontline doctors during the acceleration, peak and deceleration of the COVID-19 first wave. Personal and professional factors associated with psychological distress are also reported.Design A prospective online three-part longitudinal survey.Setting Acute hospitals in the UK and Ireland.Participants Frontline doctors working in emergency medicine, anaesthetics and intensive care medicine during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020.Primary outcome measures Psychological distress and trauma measured using the General Health Questionnaire-12 and the Impact of Events-Revised.Results The initial acceleration survey distributed across networks generated a sample of 5440 doctors. Peak and deceleration response rates from the original sample were 71.6% (n=3896) and 56.6% (n=3079), respectively. Prevalence of psychological distress was 44.7% (n=1334) during the acceleration, 36.9% (n=1098) at peak and 31.5% (n=918) at the deceleration phase. The prevalence of trauma was 23.7% (n=647) at peak and 17.7% (n=484) at deceleration. The prevalence of probable post-traumatic stress disorder was 12.6% (n=343) at peak and 10.1% (n=276) at deceleration. Worry of family infection due to clinical work was the factor most strongly associated with both distress (R2=0.06) and trauma (R2=0.10).Conclusion Findings reflect a pattern of elevated distress at acceleration and peak, with some natural recovery. It is essential that policymakers seek to prevent future adverse effects through (a) provision of vital equipment to mitigate physical and psychological harm, (b) increased awareness and recognition of signs of psychological distress and (c) the development of clear pathways to effective psychological care.

Opiate addiction has risen substantially during the past decade. New treatments to combat opiate addiction are sorely needed. The current study was conducted to determine the acute individual and interactive effects of bupropion and dextromethorphan in a rat model of opiate self-administration using the short-acting synthetic opioid remifentanil. Both of these drugs have been found to reduce self-administration of nicotine. Bupropion and dextromethorphan and their combination had differential effects depending on whether the rats showed higher or lower baseline remifentanil self-administration. The rats with higher initial remifentanil self-administration showed a significant decrease in remifentanil self-administration with bupropion or dextromethorphan treatment, compared to the vehicle control condition. This decrease in self-remifentanil administration was most pronounced when combination of the higher doses of bupropion and dextromethorphan were administered. In contrast, the rats with lower baseline remifentanil self-administration showed the opposite effect of drug treatment with an increase in remifentanil self-administration with bupropion treatment compared to the vehicle control condition. Dextromethorphan had no significant effect inthis group. This study shows that combination bupropion and dextromethorphan affects remifentanil self-administration in a complex fashion with differential effects on low and high baseline responders. In subjects with high baseline remifentanil self-administration, bupropion and dextromethorphan treatment significantly reduced self-administration, whereas in subjects with low baseline remifentanil self-administration, bupropion increased remifentanil self-administration and dextromethorphan had no discernible effect. This finding suggests that combination bupropion-dextromethorphan should be tested in humans, with a focus on treating people with high-level opiate use.

RATIONALE: A variety of neural systems are involved in drug addiction, and some of these systems are shared across different addictive drugs. We have found several different types of drug treatments that successfully reduce nicotine self-administration. OBJECTIVES: The current set of studies is the first in a series to determine if drug treatments that have been found to significantly reduce nicotine self-administration would reduce opiate self-administration. METHODS: Amitifadine, a triple reuptake inhibitor of dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin, was assessed in female Sprague-Dawley rats to determine whether it significantly reduces remifentanil self-administration with either acute or chronic treatment. RESULTS: Acutely, amitifadine doses of 5, 10 and 20 mg/kg each significantly reduced remifentanil self-administration. In a chronic study, repeated treatment with 10 mg/kg of amitifadine continued to reduce remifentanil self-administration, even after the cessation of treatment. However, amitifadine was not found to attenuate the rise in remifentanil self-administration with continued access. This study and our earlier one showed that the 10 mg/kg amitifadine dose did not significantly affect food motivated responding. Amitifadine did not attenuate remifentanil-induced antinociception as measured on the hot plate test but extended and maintained anti-nociceptive effects. CONCLUSIONS: These studies show the promise of amitifadine as a treatment for countering opiate self-administration for adjunctive use with opioids for analgesia. Further studies are needed to determine the possible efficacy of amitifadine for combating opiate addiction or preventing it in humans during adjunctive use with opioids for chronic pain.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) has a variety of adverse effects on both the users and their offspring. In the current study, a random group of Sprague-Dawley rats (25 females and 15 males) were tested for intravenous self-administration of the opioid agonist remifentanil to determine the range of acquisition for opioid. One-month after the end of self-administration of remifentanil, rats with the highest intake were mated together and rats with lowest intake were mated together. Then, the offspring of the two groups were tested for anxiety-like behavior, locomotor activity, nociception and intravenous remifentanil self-administration. The parents showed a range of remifentanil self-administration, especially in the female rats. The offspring of the parents with low and high remifentanil self-administration showed significant differences in specific behavioral functions. On the hotplate test of nociception, the female offspring parents with high remifentanil self-administration had significantly longer hotplate latencies, indicating reduced nociception, than the female offspring of parents with low remifentanil-self-administration, whereas there was no difference in the male offspring of low and high responding parents. In the elevated plus maze test of anxiety-like behavior, the offspring of the parents with high remifentanil intake showed more anxiety-like behavior than the offspring of the parents with low remifentanil intake regardless of sex. Locomotor activity was not significantly different. Interestingly, no significant differences in remifentanil self-administration in the offspring of parents with low and high remifentanil self-administration were detected. Overall, our data suggest a considerable range in remifentanil self-administration in rats and the offspring of rats with high opioid self-administration exhibit different behaviors vs offspring of rats with low opioid self-administration.
