- Abstract
Our lives have drastically changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Information and communications technologies (ICTs) have replaced other media as the primary means of work, communication, expression, and entertainment throughout this time. As society's reliance on technology increases throughout and possibly after the pandemic, it is critical to fully understand the multifaceted nature of engagement with technology and develop reliable instruments capable of accurately evaluating its processual nature. Therefore, this study aimed at describing and psychometrically validating a novel instrument to measure the dynamics of engagement with technology, namely the Technology Engagement Scale (TES). Data were collected from a representative sample of 2021 participants in Italy. Results from both the confirmatory analysis and the Rasch model suggested the mono-dimensionality of the 5-item TES. Moreover, empirical ordinal alpha indicated a very good internal consistency. Findings provide also solid evidence for the convergent validity of the proposed instrument. Finally, it emerged that TES levels were able to predict the frequency of online activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Globally, these findings suggest that the TES could be considered a reliable and valid tool, able to evaluate the complex process of engagement with technology in a simple, quick, and easy-to-administer manner.

Guendalina Graffigna, Serena Barello Department of Psychology, EngageMinds HUB Research Center, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milano, Italy Abstract: The concept of patient engagement in health care is gaining more and more attention not only in the scientific literature, but also as a requirement in the everyday practices of health care organizations. In general terms, the growing body of literature devoted to patient engagement is mainly inspired by the sociological and public health perspectives, which have generated various theories and models trying to explain how people become active agents in their health and care management. However, theories focusing on the psychosocial dimensions intervening in the patient engagement experience are still limited. This paper proposes a psychosocial perspective on patient engagement and discusses the Patient Health Engagement model, which is an evidence-based psychological theory built on extensive qualitative narrative research and literature analysis aimed at explaining patient engagement and its development in the patients’ perspective. The model has been applied to orient patient and professional educational interventions and has contributed to the generation of the first scientific measure of the psychological experience of patients’ engagement in their own care (Patient Health Engagement scale). According to this theory, patient engagement is a developmental process that involves the recovered patients’ ability to have a life projectuality and goal directedness – even if living with a disease. The paper will also discuss the theoretical origins of this model and will conduct a critical comparison of the theory with the Transtheoretical Model of Change developed by Prochaska and the five-stage grief theory by Kubler-Ross. Keywords: patient engagement, patient empowerment, psychosocial theory, PHE model, emotional factors, psychological dynamics, Transtheoretical Model of Change, five stages of grief theory

- Abstract
Meat overconsumption has increased significantly over the last few years. However, it has detrimental consequences for the environment, human health, and the well-being of animals. To address these issues, research that delves into the motivations behind reducing meat consumption is essential. Recent studies have revealed that food is acquiring symbolic value, making it even more crucial to explore this area. Thus, a new construct called Psychological Food Involvement (PFI) has been developed and validated to map the symbolic value people attribute to food. Although previous research has demonstrated that PFI predicts sustainable consumption behaviours, there is a lack of studies investigating its association with the intention to reduce meat consumption. To bridge this gap, the current study collected data by administering a questionnaire to 1007 participants, representative of the Italian population, with considerations for sex, age, profession, center size, and geographical area using stratified sampling. Employing descriptive statistics and a hierarchical regression model that accounted for socio-demographic and attitudinal variables, such as concerns for personal health, the environment, and animal welfare, the results revealed that PFI plays a pivotal role in understanding the intention to reduce meat consumption. Consumers who use food to control their public image and create a positive impression on others are more inclined to reduce their meat intake. On the other hand, those who utilize food to strengthen social bonds and achieve positive emotions are less likely to cut down on meat consumption. This study emphasizes the importance of considering cultural, social, and personal values associated with meat consumption while formulating future dietary recommendations and conducting research to foster healthy and sustainable eating habits.

- Abstract
This study aimed to identify modifiable determinants (facilitators and barriers) related to the choice of prescribing antibiotics in human medicine across clinical settings. Enhanced management of antibiotics can help slow the spread of resistant bacteria. A qualitative meta-synthesis approach was used, according to Sandelowski and Barroso's method. Included studies were evaluated using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme. Findings were extracted and organized to form a qualitative meta-summary. The Theoretical Domains Framework, the Capabilities-Opportunities-Motivation (COM-B) model and the Behaviour Change Wheel were used as a coding matrix for data interpretation. The analysis of 63 included studies revealed barriers and facilitators in 12 of 14 domains specified by the Theoretical Domains Framework. Prescribers' capabilities, motivation and opportunities were found to be the main drivers of antibiotic prescribing behaviour. Knowledge, skills, beliefs, expectations, the influence of patients and colleagues, organizational culture and infrastructure characteristics have a significant impact on prescribing behaviours. A comprehensive inventory of factors related to antibiotic prescribing has been compiled. Interventions to promote appropriate antibiotic prescribing should take a systemic approach rather than focusing solely on individual-level variables. Furthermore, the adoption of co-design approaches for such interventions is desirable to ensure greater applicability and sustainability in the real-world context of organizations.

- Abstract
Vaccine hesitancy became a more and more important issue during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the emergence of new variants, many international health agencies have already begun administering booster doses of the vaccine in response to these threats. Studies have emphasized the effectiveness of different types of incentive-based strategies to increase vaccination behaviors. The purpose of the present study was to identify the correlation between different types of incentives (legal or financial) with people's intentions to get a COVID-19 booster vaccine. We conducted a cross-sectional study between 29 January 2022 and 03 February 2022. An online quantitative survey was carried out in Italy. One thousand and twenty-two Italian adults were recruited by a professional panel provider. Descriptive statistics were computed for the five variables concerning the incentives (monetary, tax, fee, health certification, travel) toward vaccination. A general linear model (GLM) was then computed to compare the scores of the five different variables within the subjects. The general linear model showed a significant within-subjects main effect. Post-hoc comparisons showed that among the financial incentive, the monetary reward is rated lower than all the others. Tax and fees both resulted lower than both the legal incentives. Finally, COVID-19 health certification and travel did not result significantly different from each other. This study offers an important contribution to public policy literature and to policymakers in their efforts to explain and steer booster vaccination acceptance while facing an ongoing pandemic.

- Abstract
Background: Patients diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are required to deal with the unpredictability of this clinical condition, which is associated with poorer health-related quality of life (HRQoL) compared to other clinical conditions. Patient engagement is currently demonstrated to relate with chronic patients’ HRQoL, but few studies have been conducted among this population. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1176 IBD patients. Data were collected on participants’ HRQoL (SIBD-Q) and patient engagement (PHE-s®). Regression analysis was used to examine the effects of patient engagement on HRQoL. Results: About the half of the sample (47%) reported a low patient engagement level. 30% of the sample reported a low level of HRQoL. Psycho-emotional functioning resulted to be the aspect of HRQoL most impacted in the 37% of the sample. The regression model showed that PHE-s® is significantly related to the SIBD-Q total score (B =.585; p <.001; R squared =.343) and to the subscales’ scores—systemic symptoms (B =.572; p <.001; R squared =.327), bowel symptoms (B =.482; p <.001; R squared =.232), social (B =.485; p <.001; R squared =.234) and psycho-emotional (B =.607; p <.001; R squared =.369) functioning. Conclusions: Patients who are engaged in their IBD care pathway are more likely to report higher level of HRQoL, thus offering clues to potential therapeutic approaches to ameliorating IBD patients’ wellbeing. As this is a modifiable factor, screening for patient health engagement levels, coupled with appropriate interventions, could improve care, and ultimately improve HRQoL outcomes among IBD patients.

- Abstract
A cross-sectional survey between 29 January 2022 and 3 February 2022 was conducted to understand the public rationale for accepting or rejecting the use of COVID-19 immunity certificates and to identify the psychosocial factors that mostly predict the positive/negative individuals’ perceptions of this measure. One thousand twenty-two Italian adults were recruited by a professional panel provider by employing a stratified sampling strategy controlled for gender, age, geographical area of residence, size of the urban centre of residence, employment, and wage. Eight Welch’s ANOVAs were then carried out to compare the perception of benefits and the perception of harms among different population groups. Multiple linear regression was carried out to measure the explained variance of benefits perception and harms perception by age, trust in institutions, and concern for health emergencies. The results shows that age, trust in institution, and concern for the COVID-19 emergency explain more variance of perceived benefits than of perceived harms of COVID-19 immunity certificates but the opposite regarding political orientation which explains perceived harms better than perceived benefits. The need for policy improvements is pressing because a large share of the world’s population remains unvaccinated. Moreover, our results can serve as vital information for similar health crises that may occur in the future. In addition, our results are expected to offer useful insights into public feelings around the use of digital health information tools.

- Abstract
Purpose: Hemodialysis has become a standard therapy for adults with end-stage renal diseases. Adults undergoing hemodialysis have to cope with unique psychological issues that make their care journey particularly fatiguing. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we aimed to summarize and evaluate the effects of psychosocial interventions on the reduction of anxiety and depression in adults with HDs. Methods: We included randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies that measure change in depression, anxiety, and quality of life. Results: We identify three categories of psychosocial interventions delivered to adults undergoing hemodialysis. Based on our analysis, there was a medium effect of psychosocial intervention on depression (SMD − 0.85, 95%CI − 1.17; − 0.52, I2 = 80%, p < 0.01) and anxiety (SMD − 0.99, 95%CI − 1.65; − 0.33, I2 = 88%, p < 0.01) in adults undergoing hemodialysis. Conclusions: Psychosocial interventions, such as psychological support or relaxation-based therapy, seems all to reduce depression and anxiety in adults undergoing HD. Preliminary evidence suggests that there may be a benefit of psychosocial interventions on the quality of life for adults undergoing HD.

- Abstract
Introduction: Already in its first implementation, the introduction of the Covid-19 immunity certificate has generated some debate among the public. This debate might be a hindrance to the effective realization of this policy. This study aimed to systematically review published research evaluating public feeling of the Covid-19 immunity certificate policy measure and to find which factors might influence its acceptance. Methods: We followed the scoping review methods manual by the Joanna Briggs Institute. We included studies with no time limits that presented novel data, and no exclusions have been made based on study design. We excluded articles that presented just expert opinions. Results: We found and reviewed 17 articles. The included studies were conducted in two main countries (the United Kingdom and Switzerland), with the rest from Israel, Italy, Spain, Germany, Australia, Taiwan and China. Both qualitative and quantitative studies were included, and nonrepresentative samples were mostly used to explore the public feeling about the Covid-19 immunity certification. The included studies showed that public views on immunity certification are quite contradictory and influenced by age, gender, ethnicity, political orientation and attitudes towards Covid-19 vaccination. The topic more often addressed by the included studies was the public's views on the positive and negative implications of the Covid-19 immunity certificate in terms of ethical, legal and behavioural consequences of this measure. Conclusion: The varying acceptance rates are notable and may partly be linked to differences in demographics, Covid-19 concerns and ideological beliefs, as seen in other health-related tracking policies. Moreover, dominant factors behind the (un)success of this policy are complex and entangled with the cultural and political dimensions rather than being just technical. For this reason, it is important to expand psychosocial research to better understand the concerns behind

- Abstract
This study focuses on the development of a reliable coding scheme (CP-CODER) for studying interaction dynamics during the co-production of a public service involving priority communities. CP-CODER addresses the need to involve priority populations in the development of public services, an approach that has been recognized as difficult because of the high possibility of their experiencing negative health, social, and economic outcomes. The coding scheme was designed to capture group dynamics and forms of public engagement by adopting and integrating existing theoretical frameworks in the public service management and qualitative method literature. Coding was conducted on the transcripts of four co-production workshops, which included 26 family caregivers, three local health and social care service provider representatives, and five researchers involved in the co-production of new community-based services. One category was added to the two theoretical frameworks. The kappa ranged from 0.70–1.00 for the eight variables and the 26 individual items. The overall kappa was 0.91, while the overall percentage of agreement was 91.16%. The results of the pilot test showed the importance of integrating and managing three dimensions in co-producing with a priority population: the turn-taking, the content, and the level of abstraction of the discussion. The findings of this study have enhanced and supported both practitioners and researchers in co-producing services, ensuring the equal contribution of all participants, even those whose voices are rarely heard.

- Abstract
Objective: To propose a possible taxonomy for diverse stakeholders outside the healthcare communication field and to promote meaningful patient engagement in healthcare settings. Moreover, to support them in making more coherent policy, strategy, and practice decisions to enhance patient participation in their healthcare systems. Discussion: This paper is part of the pEACH Position Papers Series and provides a critical and experience-based reflection on patient engagement in different healthcare-related settings. We propose a framework that operationalises actionable patient engagement at the micro-meso-macro levels. Finally, the authors will highlight some “points of attention” that need to be addressed to support patient engagement implementation in healthcare organisations. Conclusion and practice implications: Understanding and systematising the established meanings of patient engagement through a psychosocial lens is critical to addressing the following questions: "how can various health care organisations ensure that authentic patient engagement informs decision-making and strategies", "how can these organisations build authentic connections with their patients", and importantly, "how can patients gain valuable and reliable insights through patient engagement"? Answering these questions can enable key stakeholders to make informed decisions that ensure the quality and effectiveness of patient engagement initiatives in different healthcare settings.

- Abstract
Traceability of food is considered as an important tool for ensuring food quality and safety, in turn increasing consumers' trust. Verification of food authenticity is currently carried out by officials and producers, typically through the use of paper documents that may not ensure a proper level of integrity. Therefore, independent analytical methods and forgery-proof labels are required by the agri-food sector, driving the development of "omics" traceability technologies for the authentication of foods. Despite the growing interest in these technologies from a technical-scientific point of view, no research has been carried out on consumers' perceptions. Given these premises, this study aimed at understanding consumers' orientations towards "omics" technologies applied to organic vegetables and unravelling the main psychological and socio-demographic variables that influence their adoption. Data were collected with a self-report questionnaire filled out by a sample of 807 Italians, representative of the population. We used descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression to analyze data. Results show that, despite the lack of subjective knowledge of "omics" technologies, Italians have positive attitudes and are interested in using and buying organic vegetables certified by this approach, even paying more. Furthermore, young people with positive attitudes and higher environmental concerns have a more positive attitude towards "omics" technologies. This research points out the need to educate consumers about what the "omics" technology is, enhancing consumers' attitudes and underlining its environmental contribution. This will increase consumers' acceptance and support the implementation of the technology.

- Abstract
Objectives To measure the association between patient activation and hospitalization or emergency department (ED) visits among adults with chronic diseases. Study design Systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods A systematic review of English articles was performed using the following databases: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Embase. Articles were searched from 2005 until July 2021. Observational studies that measured the association between patient activation, measured by the Patient Activation Measure (PAM), and hospitalization or ED visits among adults with chronic or multichronic diseases were included. Pairs of reviewers independently screened the studies and extracted data for qualitative and quantitative synthesis. The methodological quality was assessed using the Quality in Prognostic Studies (QUIPS) tool. Results A total of nine observational studies (153,121 participants) were included in the qualitative synthesis, whereas six were pooled in the quantitative synthesis (151,359 participants). High levels of patient activation were significantly associated with a reduced risk for both hospitalizations (RR [95% CI] = 0.69 [0.61; 0.77], I2 = 78%) and ED visits (RR [95% CI] = 0.76 [0.70; 0.84], I2 = 72%). Conclusions Our findings suggest the existence of an inverse association between patient activation and healthcare resources utilization. Further observational studies are needed to fully comprehend the magnitude of this association.

- Abstract
Nowadays, research that investigates the determinants affecting consumer acceptance of foods with or without palm oil is growing, while there is a lack of studies that summarize this evidence and that focus on a potential trade-off between these two options, namely, products containing sustainable palm oil. For this reason, a systematic review was carried out to identify the determinants affecting the acceptance of foods with or without palm oil, and with sustainable palm oil. The variables that transversely affect the acceptance of these products have a psychological nature and are related to health and environment concern and the level of knowledge. In particular, the knowledge of the specific food product seems to be the key to behavioral change. Indeed, the knowledge of a specific food product leads to consider positively the ingredients of which it is composed also increase the acceptance of palm oil if present among the ingredients.

- Abstract
The consumption of lactose-free products and in particular lactose-free milk is increasing worldwide. Although many studies claim that this dietary trend is mainly determined by the number of lactose intolerant people that is growing, others state that most of them self-report an intolerance that has not been diagnosed by medical tests. However, many researchers reported that the consumption of lactose-free milk may put the consumers' health at risk especially when the subjects are not intolerant. Consequently, understanding this new dietary trend considering its main determinants it is necessary to generate educational and intervention campaigns useful to guide people toward healthier and more adequate eating styles. For these reasons we conducted a narrative mini review to summarize the factors contributing to the consumption of lactose-free milk as an alternative to cow's milk, exploring intrinsic and extrinsic product characteristics, biological and physiological, as well as psychological, situational and socio-cultural factors. This narrative mini-review shows that there are six categories of factors that affect the consumption of lactose-free milk. In particular, the intrinsic aspects linked to the product and the socio-demographic characteristics of the consumer are the most explored. On the contrary, situational and socio-cultural factors are the least studied. Finally, this study argues that there are too few studies that investigates the emotional, identity and social aspects underlying these food choices, suggesting the development of future research that investigate the implicit consumer subjective levers to decipher lactose-free milk consumptions.

- Abstract
The construct of involvement has been shown to affect brand loyalty, diffusion of innovations, responses to advertising, and finally, food purchase choices. Despite the recognized importance of this construct in the food market, there is no agreement about the best way to define and measure it. This systematic review provides an overview of currently available involvement in food measures in order to understand the psychological domains covered and to assess their psychometric properties. Comprehensive searches of three electronic databases were conducted in October 2020. Studies were considered that aimed at developing a measure of involvement in food (FI) or that assessed at least one measurement property of involvement in food measures. Methodological quality of studies was assessed with the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments checklist. The titles and abstracts of 4160 articles were screened, with 258 full-text articles assessed for eligibility. Of these, 36 studies were identified as meeting the study criteria, 19 of which were measure development studies. A range of FI entries was captured by included measures. These were classified into five psychological domains: affective, self-expressive, situational, cognitive and behavioral. Regarding the psychometric quality of measures, the results highlight that the scientific quality of most instruments is doubtful or inadequate. Future research should focus on reaching a shared definition of FI, oriented by a solid psychological analysis of the phenomenon, in order to develop a comprehensive scale able to generate rigorous, comparable and readable results.

- Abstract
During the last year, feelings of anxiety and depression were registered among the Italian population and affected food consumption. Among the research that explored people’s dietary inclinations during the current pandemic, no previous studies have explored psychological factors associated with the “free-from” dietary pattern. Our study is aimed at understanding if free-from food consumption orientations can be associated with negative psychological distress. We conducted a web-based survey between 27/10/2020–03/12/2020 on a representative sample of 963 Italians. Psychometric scales and ad hoc items were used to measure people’s levels of anxiety, depression, fear for contagion and consumption orientation towards “free-from” foods. Of the sample, 18.2% frequently purchased gluten-free food products and 22.5% purchased lactose-free foods. Most of the population (44.1%) feels very at risk of contagion from COVID-19 and suffers from anxiety (52.8%) and depression (55.0%). Free-from consumers are more anxious, depressed, have higher risk of contagion, and are younger than the non-consumers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, free-from foods can represent for the people a way to restore control over their lifestyle, which was denied during the emergency. However, we highlight possible negative long-term effects of this dietary choice.

- Abstract

- Abstract
The Authors reply to the contributions on the target article "A transdisciplinary scenario on health: A paradigm for psychology and psychologists?" underlining the development of two thematic lines of reflection. On the one hand, there is a deepening of the reasons in favor of a transdisciplinary approach to health and in favor of a commitment of psychology in this sense. On the other hand, a series of "open questions" are discussed that psychology is called upon to tackle in the near future if it is aimed to orient its development in a transdisciplinary perspective. Both lines are considered essential for a verification of the viability of the transdisciplinary scenario by health psychology.

- Abstract
Assessing vaccine hesitancy and its determinants is pivotal to optimize vaccine acceptance in anticoagulated patients, given that this population has been described to have a higher risk of severe COVID-19-related complications. This study assessed the moderator role of patients’ health engagement on the relationship between health literacy and vaccine hesitancy. A web-based survey was performed in Italy during the first wave (June–August 2020) and the second wave (October 2020–March 2021) of the COVID-19 pandemic, enrolling 288 patients. The rates of vaccine hesitancy reported during the first pandemic wave were 38.4% and 30.8% during the second wave (when a vaccine was available) (p = .164). A moderation analysis was performed to assess the role of health engagement in influencing the relationship from health literacy to vaccine hesitancy. Patients’ health engagement enhanced the effects of health literacy on decreasing vaccine hesitancy (p < .001), suggesting that co-construction strategies for communicative action are pivotal.

- Abstract
Background: Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) may be particularly vulnerable to the effects of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) on disease management and psychological status. This study explored psychological reactions to the Covid-19 emergency and IBD disease management in a sample of Italian patients. Methods: An online questionnaire was designed to assess general concerns, psychological reaction, disease management, socio-demographics, and clinical information with validated scales and ad hoc items. A non-probabilistic purposive sample was selected, comprised patients with IBD who belonged to the Italian Association for patients with IBD (AMICI Onlus) completed the questionnaire in April 2020. Data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics, student’s T-test for independent groups, and one-way ANOVA (Analysis of Variance). Results: One thousand fourteen eligible questionnaires were analyzed. Italian patients with IBD appeared to be very worried about the Covid-19 emergency (60.7%) and concerned about the risks of infection (59%). Half of the sample reported medium to high-perceived stress, and 74% had low-medium coping self-efficacy levels. One third was in a state of psychological arousal. Twenty-nine percent of patients had canceled hospital appointments for fear of contracting the virus. The majority of responders believed that belonging to the Italian Association for Patients with IBD - AMICI Onlus - is useful. Conclusions: The results revealed that this sample of Italian patients with IBD lived with medium level of stress and with inadequate coping self-efficacy regarding disease management. Accordingly, Covid-19 may affect self-management behaviors. Therefore, national and regional associations for patients with IBD, should largely support these patients in this emergency.

- Abstract
The present review aims to map the current literature on educational interventions to promote food literacy in type 2 diabetes, with a particular focus on the concept of patient engagement. The systematic review was implemented on five databases with no restrictions on the publication year. The studies selected for the review were focused on patients with type 2 diabetes, ranging from 2003 to 2021 and published in 13 countries (44% USA). Thirty-three articles were analyzed. Twenty-seven articles targeted singular patients; fifteen articles conceptualized patient engagement as self-management. In seven articles, the provider is a multidisciplinary team. Twenty articles did not report a theoretical framework in the intervention development, and eleven did not use an intervention material. Twenty-six articles did not use a technology proxy. Outcome categories were narratively mapped into four areas: clinical, psychological, behavioral, and literacy. To date, most of the interventions are heterogeneous in the adopted methodology, measures, and outcomes considered. More attention should be given to the psychosocial characterization of patient engagement as well as the technological support. High-quality, randomized controlled trials and longitudinal studies are lacking and need to be conducted to verify the efficacy of these insights.

- Abstract
Ensuring multiple sclerosis (MS) patients’ adherence to therapy is often challenging, but it is crucial to their survival and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The aim of the present study was to outline connections between adherence, physical and mental HRQoL, levels of psychological readiness to engage in a treatment, levels of social support, anthropometric, socio-demographic and clinical factors in patients suffering from MS. This cross-sectional study involved a sample of 237 Italian MS patients. A survey was conducted with a structured self-administered online questionnaire using validated measures of quality of life, adherence to therapy and anthropometric, socio-demographic, psychological and clinical variables. A path analysis was used to test the overall structure of the associations between the variables. The pathway indicates a positive association between mental health index and a stronger degree of engagement and being or having been in a long-term relationship. Physical health index was positively associated with age, having an occupation, and having a specific form of MS. Having had relapses in the previous year raised the odds of better adherence to therapy, while an increase in Body Mass Index (BMI) reduced them. Our findings could help in the management of MS patients, promoting behavioral interventions that take the psychological and socio-demographic peculiarities of each patient into account with a view to improving their adherence to therapy.

- Abstract
A new transdisciplinary approach to health (TDH) based on the participatory involvement of multiple disciplines and multiple actors (scientific and lay) in the construction of answers to social questions of health is affirmed in the scientific field. After describing the phenomenon of TDH in its main features (historical, theoretical, methodological) open questions and perspectives that this approach presents are here focused on. Finally, the reasons for a participatory involvement of psychology and psychologists in the TDH approach are argued.

- Abstract
Background: The chronic and progressive evolution of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD), with its prototypical fluctuating trend, creates a condition of psycho-social discomfort, impacting the quality of life in terms of personal, working, and interpersonal. Aims: In this article, we want to identify the nature and extent of the research evidence on the life experiences, the perceived engagement, the psychological, social care and welfare needs of people affected by IBD across the lifecycle. Methods: Following the approach set out by Arksey and O’Malley and the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews, we conducted a scoping review in March 2019 and closed the review with an update in October 2019. It was performed using electronic databases covering Health and Life Sciences, Social Sciences and Medical Sciences, such as PubMed, Medline, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane, Web of Science, PsycInfo. Results: We identified 95 peer-reviewed articles published from 2009 to 2019, that allowed to detection the main needs in children (psychological, need to be accepted, physical activity, feeding, parent style, support, social needs), adolescents (to understand, physical and psychological needs, protection, relational, gratitude, respect, and engagement) and adults (information, medical, psychological, social, work-related, practical, future-related, engagement). Although the literature confirms that the majority of the IBD units have planned provision for the different types of transitions, the quality and appropriateness of these services have not been assessed or audited for all the kinds of challenges across the life cycle. Conclusions: The literature shows the relevance of organizing a flexible, personalized health care process across all the critical phases of the life cycle, providing adequate benchmarks for comparison in a multidisciplinary perspective and ensuring continuity between hospital and territory.

- Abstract
Background: Family caregivers are key actors in the ageing society. They are mediators between practitioners and patients and usually provide also essential daily services for the elders. However, till now, few services have been deployed to help caregivers in their care tasks as in improving their mental health which can experience sever burden due to caregiving duties. The purpose of the study is to implement a community-based participatory research project to co-design an innovative organizational model of social services for family caregivers of elderly health consumers living in remote rural areas in Italy. Methods: This is a community-based participatory research project in the remote area of Vallecamonica involving four main phases. These included a quantitative analysis of caregiver needs, a scoping review on existing services for caregivers, co-design workshops with local stakeholders and caregivers to create a novel service the piloting and a first implementation of the service and the assessment of project transferability to other contexts. Results: As the hours dedicated to elder care increases, both objective and developmental caregiver’s burden significantly increases. Conversely, higher levels of engagement were associated with lower physical and emotional burden, and caregiver engagement was positively correlated with their perceived self-efficacy in managing disruptive patient behaviours. Based on these preliminary results, four co-design workshops with caregivers were conducted and led to the definition of the SOS caregivers service, built on four pillars structured upon the previous need analysis: a citizens’ management board, training courses, peer-to-peer meetings, and project and service information. We found that co-design is an effective means of creating new services for family caregivers, whose experiential knowledge proved to be a key resource for the project team in delivering and managing services. Less positively, the transferability an

- Abstract
Background: Italy was the first European country to implement a national lockdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Worldwide, this pandemic had a huge impact on the mental health of people in many countries causing similar reaction in terms of emotions and concerns at the population level. Our study investigated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on psychological well-being in a cohort of Italian university students. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional survey in the period immediately after the first lockdown through the administration of a questionnaire on the personal websites of students attending their undergraduate courses at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. We used the Patient-Health-Engagement-Scale, Self-Rating-Anxiety-Scale, and Self-Rating-Depression-Scale to assess engagement, anxiety symptoms, and depression symptoms of our sample. Results: The sample size was 501 subjects, of which 35.33% were classified as anxious and 72.93% as depressed. Over 90% of respondents had good understanding of the preventive measures despite over 70% suffered from the impossibility of physically seeing friends and partners. Around 55% of students would have been willing to contribute much more to face the pandemic. An increase in the occurrences of anxiety was associated with being female, being student of the Rome campus, suffering from the impossibility of attending university, being distant from colleagues, and being unable of physically seeing one’s partner. Performing physical activity reduced this likelihood. Conclusion: University students are at risk of psychological distress in the case of traumatic events. The evolution of the pandemic is uncertain and may have long-term effects on mental health. Therefore, it is crucial to study the most effective interventions to identify vulnerable subgroups and to plan for acute and long-term psychological services to control and reduce the burden of psychological problems.

- Abstract
In the Italian context, the diffusion of online fake news about food is becoming increasingly fast-paced and widespread, making it more difficult for the public to recognize reliable information. Moreover, this phenomenon is deteriorating the relation with public institutions and industries. The purpose of this article is to provide a more advanced understanding of the individual psychological factors and the social influence that contributes to the belief in food-related online fake news and the aspects that can increase or mitigate this risk. Data were collected with a selfreport questionnaire between February and March 2019. We obtained 1004 valid questionnaires filled out by a representative sample of Italian population, extracted by stratified sampling. We used structural equation modelling and the multi-group analyses to test our hypothesis. The results show that self-evaluation negatively affects the social-influence, which in turn positively affects the belief in online fake news. Moreover, this latter relationship is moderated by the readiness to change. Our results suggest that individual psychological characteristics and social influence are important in explaining the belief in online fake news in the food sector; however, a pivotal role is played by the motivation of lifestyle change. This should be considered to engage people in clear and effective communication.

- Abstract
Background: Co-production has been widely recognised as a potential means to reduce the dissatisfaction of citizens, the inefficacy of service providers, and conflicts in relations between the former and the latter. However, the benefits of co-production has begun to be questioned: co-production has often been taken for granted, and its effects may not be effective. To understand and prevent unsuccessful citizen and provider collaboration, the recent literature has begun to focus on the causes of co-destruction. This paper investigates how the barriers that may arise during the co-production of a new social service with family carers can be identified and interpreted. Methods: To investigate this topic, we undertook a single case study - a longitudinal project (Place4Carers (Graffigna et al., BMJ Open 10:e037570, 2020)) intended to co-produce a new social care service with and for the family carers of elderly patients living in rural and remote areas. We organised collaborative co-assessment workshops and semi-structured interviews to collect the views of family carers and service providers on the co-production process. A reflexive approach was used in the analysis for collecting the opinions of the research team that participated in the co-production process. Results: The analysis revealed four main co-production barriers: lack of trust, lack of effectiveness of engagement, participants’ inability (or impossibility) to change and the lack of a cohesive partnership among partners. Despite these findings, the project increases carers’ satisfaction, competence and trust in service providers by demonstrating the positive effects of co-production. Conclusions: Our article confirms that co-creation and co-destruction processes may coexist. The role of researchers and service providers is to prevent or remedy co-destruction effects. To this end, we suggest that in co-production projects, more time should be spent co-assessing the project before, during and after the co-pr

- Abstract
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is a transmissible illness that was recognized in December 2019 and World Health Organization (WHO) stated a pandemic on 11 March 2020. As no cure has been developed for COVID-19 disease yet, Italy has adopted restrictive measures to avoid the spread of the virus, causing different psychological reactions (e.g., stress, anxiety) that lead people to change lifestyle and in particular the consumer orientation toward food. In addition, the COVID-19 emergency had also affected the Italian economy, causing an 11.3% decrease in GDP (gross domestic product). All these changes gave rise to a sense of instability, but it is known that new possibilities may arise in these situations. In particular, the pandemic could be the turning point to make consumers aware of the close link between human health and the ecosystems, supporting the “One Health” perspective and enhancing the orientation to consumer sustainable food products. However, little is known about how the psychological reactions to COVID-19 emergency have affected the consumers' intention to purchase sustainable food products. In order to answer these questions, a representative sample of 1,004 Italian citizens, extracted by stratified sampling, answered an online survey between May the 12th and 18th 2020. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and contingency tables. The results show that during phase one of COVID-19 disease about 30% of the sample reported that have frequently (often and always) consumed the certified sustainable food products and about 20% of the sample have intention to increase the consumption of them in the next 6 months, percentages that increase among those who feel more vulnerable regarding the risk contagion. Moreover, the psychological impact of the COVID-19 emergency has led to a change in consumers' attitudes, increasing the interest in animal and environmental issues and in human health. These aspects seem to drive the future intention of purchasing sustainabl

- Abstract
Background: Gluten- and lactose-free products are registering a sudden rise in the market, particularly among tolerant people, and this leads to consumer confusion and nutritional inadequacies. The number of studies around this trend has steadily increased in the last 10 years, as scholars from different disciplines have tried to rationalize consumers’ behaviours in these foods’ choice. However, the scientific debate appears fragmented and lacks an integrated view. Objectives: We conducted a systematic integrative review of consumers’ determinants of gluten-free and lactose-free consumption to frame the state of the art and research gaps. Methods: 45 English language articles reporting quantitative empirical studies ranging from 1971 and 2019 were analysed. First we categorized the consumption determinants in six factors applying the model proposed by Koster and Mojet, then we proposed a new integrated conceptualization inspired by Bronfenbrenner's Transtheoretical Model. Moreover, differences and similarities between tolerant and intolerant consumers will be highlighted. Results: Research on intolerant consumers focused more on individuals’ determinants, in terms of awareness, trust, morality, and capability to read nutritional facts (as purchase facilitators); while studies targeting tolerant consumers focused more on objective product characteristics (with price and availability in supermarkets as barriers for consumption). In this target the subjective perspective has been studied only referring to the risk for developing psychological issues in the restrictive diet. Conclusion: As information is lacking in the scientific debate, we suggest for future research the integration of consumers’ subjective implicit levers to decipher free-from purchase behaviours.

- Abstract
Purpose of the study: This article reports the development and Italian validation of a new self-report instrument (The Engagement in Healthy Ageing Promotion Scale) that assesses older people engagement in healthy ageing promotion and is grounded on an ecological operational definition of this phenomenon. Methods: 14 items were developed basing on a previously conducted qualitative study exploring older adults’ experiences and meanings of engagement in health promotion. Analyses were conducted on an Italian sample of 540 adults aged 60 years and older, randomly split into an exploratory (n = 308) and a confirmatory (n = 232) group. A final scale of 8 items was validated with confirmatory factor analyses. Concurrent and criterion validity of the final items were evaluated with measures of patient activation, readiness to change lifestyle and wellbeing. Results: Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the one-factor structure of the eightitems scale, with a variance explained of 44% and an eigenvalue equal to 3.5. The fit values of the final model indicated a good model fit. Internal consistency of the scale was good, with a Cronbach’s Alpha equal to 0.81. Finally, concurrent and criterion validity revealed significant relationships with the patient activation construct (r = .401; p = .000), with the readiness to change lifestyle (r = .211; p = .000), and with older people’s wellbeing (r = .205; p = .000). Implications: The developed instrument can represent a useful tool to estimate the extent to which older citizens are engaged in health promotion activities, as well as to develop and evaluate interventions aimed to improve wellbeing and preventive behaviours of older citizens.
