Quantum data hiding encodes a hidden classical bit to a pair of quantum states that is difficult to distinguish using a particular set of measurement, denoted as $M$. In this work, we explore quantum data hiding in two contexts involving Gaussian operations or states. First, we consider the set of measurement $M$ as Gaussian local quantum operations and classical communication, a new set of operations not previously discussed in the literature for data hiding. We hide one classical bit in the two different mixture of displaced two-mode squeezed states. Second, we consider the set of measurement $M$ as general Gaussian measurement and construct the data hiding states using two-mode thermal states. This data hiding scheme is effective in the weak strength limit, providing a new example compared to existing discussions for the set of general Gaussian measurement.

We present AlphaNet, a local frame-based equivariant model designed to achieve both accurate and efficient simulations for atomistic systems. Recently, machine learning force fields (MLFFs) have gained prominence in molecular dynamics simulations due to their advantageous efficiency-accuracy balance compared to classical force fields and quantum mechanical calculations, alongside their transferability across various systems. Despite the advancements in improving model accuracy, the efficiency and scalability of MLFFs remain significant obstacles in practical applications. AlphaNet enhances computational efficiency and accuracy by leveraging the local geometric structures of atomic environments through the construction of equivariant local frames and learnable frame transitions. We substantiate the efficacy of AlphaNet across diverse datasets, including defected graphene, formate decomposition, zeolites, and surface reactions. AlphaNet consistently surpasses well-established models, such as NequIP and DeepPot, in terms of both energy and force prediction accuracy. Notably, AlphaNet offers one of the best trade-offs between computational efficiency and accuracy among existing models. Classically hard to simulate quantum states, or "magic states", are prerequisites to quantum advantage, highlighting an apparent separation between classically and quantumly tractable problems. Classically simulable states such as Clifford circuits on stabilizer states, free bosonic states, free fermions, and matchgate circuits are all in some sense Gaussian. While free bosons and fermions arise from quadratic Hamiltonians, recent works have demonstrated that bosonic and qudit systems converge to Gaussians and stabilizers under convolution. In this work, we similarly identify convolution for fermions and find efficient measures of non-Gaussian magic in pure fermionic states. We demonstrate that three natural notions for the Gaussification of a state, (1) the Gaussian state with the same covariance matrix, (2) the fixed point of convolution, and (3) the closest Gaussian in relative entropy, coincide by proving a central limit theorem for fermionic systems. We then utilize the violation of Wick's theorem and the matchgate identity to quantify non-Gaussian magic in addition to a SWAP test., Comment: 17 pages

Information theory provides a framework for answering fundamental questions about the optimal performance of many important quantum communication and computational tasks. In many cases, the optimal rates of these tasks can be expressed in terms of regularized formulas that consist of linear combinations of von Neumann entropies optimized over state extensions. However, evaluation of regularized formulas is often intractable, since it involves computing a formula's value in the limit of infinitely many copies of a state. To find optimized, linear entropic functions of quantum states whose regularized versions are tractable to compute, we search for linear combinations of entropies on tripartite quantum states that are additive. We use the method of \cite{cross2017uniform}, which considers bipartite formulas, to identify convex polyhedral cones of uniformly additive \emph{tripartite} correlation measures. We rely only on strong subadditivity of the von Neumann entropy and use these cones to prove that three previously established tripartite optimized correlation measures are additive., Comment: main body: 12 pages, 3 tables appendix: 9 pages

Since the discovery of MgB2 with Tc=39K, various metal diborides of MB2 have been intensively studied to find possible conventional high-temperature superconductors. A possible 2D structure of the metal diboride has been shown to be in the form of M2B2. Using density functional theory, we investigated phase stability and possible conventional superconductors for non-hydrogenation M2B2, light hydrogenation M2B2H, and heavy hydrogenation M2B2H4 of transition metal borides M2B2 (M=Sc,Y,V,Nb). The light hydrogenation M2B2H show as if they were a perturbed system from the non-hydrogenation in which the electronic structure, the phonon property, and the possible superconducting state are slightly changed. However, the heavy hydrogenation of M2B2H4 give very promising 2D materials with a possible high Tc of up to 84K at ambient pressure. In arXiv:2110.02613, we presented a generalised dynamical resource theory framework that enabled noise reduction techniques including dynamical decoupling (DD) to be studied. While this fundamental contribution remains correct, it has been found that the main resource quantifiers we employed to study these resource theories -- based on the relative entropies between Choi states of multitime processes -- are not monotonic under the allowed transformations. In this letter we detail modified relative entropy-based resource quantifiers, prove that they are indeed monotonic in our resource theories. We re-interpret our numerical results in terms of these new relative entropy monotones, arriving at the same empirical conclusions: DD can be understood as temporal resource distillation, and improvements to noise reduction via our multitimescale optimal dynamical decoupling (MODD) method coincide with a decrease in the corresponding non-Markovianity monotone., Comment: Correcting an error in arXiv:2110.02613, which was first pointed out in arXiv:2407.15712

The quantum data processing inequality asserts that two quantum states become harder to distinguish when a noisy channel is applied. On the other hand, a reverse quantum data processing inequality characterizes whether distinguishability is preserved after the application of a noisy channel. In this work, we explore these concepts through contraction and expansion coefficients of the relative entropy of quantum channels. Our first result is that quantum channels with an input dimension greater than or equal to the output dimension do not have a non-zero expansion coefficient, which means that they cannot admit a reverse data-processing inequality. We propose a comparative approach by introducing a relative expansion coefficient, to assess how one channel expands relative entropy compared to another. We show that this relative expansion coefficient is positive for three important classes of quantum channels: depolarizing channels, generalized dephasing channels, and amplitude damping channels. As an application, we give the first rigorous construction of level-1 less noisy quantum channels that are non-degradable.

We analyse the performance of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) aided system where the RIS is divided into subsurfaces. Each subsurface is designed specifically for one user, who is served on their own frequency band. The other subsurfaces (those not designed for this user) provide additional uncontrolled scattering. We derive the exact closed-form expression for the mean signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the subsurface design (SD) when all channels experience correlated Ricean fading. We simplify this to find the mean SNR for line-of-sight (LoS) channels and channels experiencing correlated Rayleigh fading. An iterative SD (ISD) process is proposed, where subsurfaces are designed sequentially, and the phases that are already set are used to enhance the design of the remaining subsurfaces. This is extended to a converged ISD (CISD), where the ISD process is repeated multiple times until the SNR increases by less than a specified tolerance. The ISD and CISD both provide a performance improvement over SD, which increases as the number of RIS elements (N) increases. The SD is significantly simpler than the lowest complexity multi-user (MU) method we know of, and despite each user having less bandwidth, the SD outperforms the existing method in some key scenarios. The SD is more robust to strongly LoS channels and clustered users, as it does not rely on spatial multiplexing like other MU methods. Combined with the complexity reduction, this makes the SD an attractive phase selection method.

This document is comprised of a collection of updated preliminary parameters for the key parts of the muon collider. The updated preliminary parameters follow on from the October 2023 Tentative Parameters Report. Particular attention has been given to regions of the facility that are believed to hold greater technical uncertainty in their design and that have a strong impact on the cost and power consumption of the facility. The data is collected from a collaborative spreadsheet and transferred to overleaf.

Observations of polarization position angle ($\theta$) standards made from 2014 to 2023 with the High Precision Polarimetric Instrument (HIPPI) and other HIPPI-class polarimeters in both hemispheres are used to investigate their variability. Multi-band data were first used to thoroughly recalibrate the instrument performance by bench-marking against carefully selected literature data. A novel Co-ordinate Difference Matrix (CDM) approach - which combines pairs of points - was then used to amalgamate monochromatic ($g^\prime$ band) observations from many observing runs and re-determine $\theta$ for 17 standard stars. The CDM algorithm was then integrated into a fitting routine and used to establish the impact of stellar variability on the measured position angle scatter. The approach yields variability detections for stars on long time scales that appear stable over short runs. The best position angle standards are $\ell$ Car, $o$ Sco, HD 154445, HD 161056 and $\iota^1$ Sco which are stable to $\leq$ 0.123$^\circ$. Position angle variability of 0.27-0.82$^\circ$, significant at the 3-$\sigma$ level, is found for 5 standards, including the Luminous Blue Variable HD 160529 and all but one of the other B/A-type supergiants (HD 80558, HD 111613, HD 183143 and 55 Cyg), most of which also appear likely to be variable in polarization magnitude ($p$) - there is no preferred orientation for the polarization in these objects, which are all classified as $\alpha$ Cygni variables. Despite this we make six key recommendations for observers - relating to data acquisition, processing and reporting - that will allow them to use these standards to achieve $<$ 0.1$^\circ$ precision in the telescope position angle with similar instrumentation, and allow data sets to be combined more accurately., Comment: 30 pages, 8 figures, 17 tables, 4 appendices; accepted to MNRAS. Metallic hydrogen is the most common condensed material in the universe, comprising the centre of gas giant planets. However, experimental studies are extremely challenging, and most of our understanding of this material has been led by theory. Chemistry in this environment has not been probed experimentally, so here we examine hydrocarbon chemistry in metallic hydrogen using density functional theory calculations. We find that carbon and oxygen react with metallic hydrogen to produce an entirely new type of hydrocarbon chemistry based on sixfold coordinated carbon with organic-style molecules CH6, C2H8, C3H10 OH3 NH4 and CH4OH. These are charged molecules stabilised by the metallic environment. Their associated electric fields are screened, giving oscillation in the surrounding electron and proton densities. In view of the excess hydrogen we refer to them as hypermethane, hyperethane etc. The relationship to traditional chemistry is that the metallic background acts as an electron donor and stabilizes negatively charged ions. This enables the formation of six covalent bonds per carbon atom, or three per oxygen atom. Two-dimensional Janus transition-metal chalcogenide -hydrides (2D-JTMCs) feature a three layered structure, with a central layer of transition metal atoms, with chalcogenides below and hydogens above. This asymmetry endows 2D-JTMCs with unique and tunable electronic, optical, and mechanical properties. In this paper, we systematically investigate two-dimensional hexagonal 2H and 1T Janus transition metal chalcogenide (JTMC) hydrides (MXH), with M = Ti, Zr, Hf, and X = S, Se, Te. These JTMCs exhibit metallic behavior with single band crossings at the Fermi level, primarily dominated by transition metal d orbitals and phonon stability, evidenced by DFPT calculations. We estimate Tc using the Allen-Dynes formula and the closing superconducting gap by solving anisotropic gap equations of the Migdal-Eliashberg equations. Hydrogen in its metallic form is the most common material in our solar system, found under the extreme pressure and temperature conditions found in giant planets. Such conditions are inaccessible to experiment and consequently, theoretical work has typically led experiment. Many remarkable properties are proposed for metallic hydrogen, which is expected to exist in solid form down to low temperatures. Relevant here is that solid metallic hydrogen is not expected to have a close-packed structure, even at extreme pressures. The predicted crystal structure has a packing fraction of only 0.44 compared with 0.74 for fcc. Alloying with other metallic elements can form compounds with atomic hydrogen and much reduced metallization pressure. Here, we investigate the possible solid solubility of a representative range of elements (Be, B, Mg, S, Fe, La) in metallic atomic hydrogen near 500GPa. Zero point energy is highly significant in all cases. The metallic elements Be, Mg, Fe, and La have a well-defined clathrate-style first neighbour shell at 300K, while the non-metallic B and S have more open arrangements. All the elements considered are soluble, in sites substituting for more than one hydrogen atom. The solid solubility of such a wide range of ambient bonding types: simple metals, covalent materials, transition metals, lanthanides, which gives a strong indication that most elements will dissolve in solid metallic hydrogen., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters

Janus transition metal-dichalcogenide (JTMD) materials have attracted a great deal of attention due to their remarkable physical properties arising from the two-dimensional geometry and the breakdown of the out-of-plane symmetry. Using first-principles density functional theory, we investigated the phase stability, strain-enhanced phase stability, and superconductivity of Janus WSeH and WSH. In addition, we investigated the contribution of the phonon linewidths from the phonon energy spectrum responsible for the superconductivity, and the electron-phonon coupling as a function of phonon wave vectors and modes. Previous work has examined hexagonal 2H and tetragonal 1T structures, but we found that neither is a ground state structure. The metastable 2H phase of WSeH is dynamically stable with Tc around 11.60K, similar to WSH. Compressive biaxial strain - the 2D equivalent of pressure - can stabilize the 1T structures of WSeH and WSH with Tc around 9.23K and 10.52K, respectively., Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures, to be published in Physical Review B

Organic molecular ferroelectrics, including organic proton-transfer ferroelectrics and antiferroelectrics, are potentially attractive in organic electronics and have significant chemical tunability. Among these, acid-base proton transfer (PT) salts stand out due to their low coercive fields and the possibility to tune their properties with different acid-base combinations. Using crystal structure prediction, combining small acid and base organic molecular species, we here predict three novel acid-base PT ferroelectric salts with higher polarization than existing materials. We also report two combinations that form antiferroelectric crystal structures. However, some combinations also result in unfavorable packing or the formation of co-crystal or in one case a divalent salt. The protonation state is found to be highly linked to the crystal structure, with cases where salt crystal structures have the same energetic preferability as co-crystals with a different crystalline packing.

A cylindrical TM$_{0,1,0}$ mode microwave cavity resonator was excited using a balanced interferometric configuration that allowed manipulation of the electric field and potential within the resonator by adjusting the phase and amplitude of the interferometer arms driving the resonator. With precise tuning of the phase and amplitude, 25 dB suppression of the electric field at the resonance frequency was achieved while simultaneously resonantly enhancing the time-varying electric-scalar potential. Under these conditions, the system demonstrated electromagnetically induced absorption in the cavity response due to the annulment of the electric field at the resonance frequency. This phenomena can be regarded as a form of extreme dispersion, and led to a sharp increase in the cavity phase versus frequency response by an order of magnitude when compared to the cavity Q-factor. This work presents an experimental setup that will allow the electric-scalar Aharonov-Bohm effect to be tested under conditions involving a time-varying electric-scalar potential, without the presence of an electric field or magnetic vector potential, an experiment that has not yet been realised., Comment: Accepted for Phys. We consider a class of BSM models where a generic scalar electroweak multiplet obtains a significant fraction of its mass from a coupling to the Higgs. Such models are non-decoupling: their new states are necessarily at the TeV scale or below, they can significantly alter the electroweak phase transition, and they have a pattern of low energy effects that are distinct from those predicted by SMEFT. Using their minimal gauge and Higgs couplings, we show that a future precision lepton collider (such as FCC-ee, CEPC, ILC, or CLIC) can probe all the non-decoupling parameter space of scalar electroweak multiplets, providing fundamental information on the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking., Comment: 27 pages, 4 figures

We give a refined description of the dominant spectrum of a non-local operator that models growth and equal mitosis of cells. More precisely we look at the spectrum in half planes at the right hand side of the first accumulation point of eigenvalues and give criteria on the weight of weighted $L^1$ spaces for this spectrum to be made of explicit simple eigenvalues. The method relies on a high order long time asymptotic expansion of the solutions to the associated evolution equation obtained in [Zaidi, van Brunt, Wake, Proc. A, R. Soc. Lond., 2015] combined with a Weyl theorem taken from [Mischler, Scher, Ann. Inst. Henri Poincar\'e, Anal. Non Lin\'eaire, 2016].

Exploration is a critical challenge in robotics, centered on understanding unknown environments. In this work, we focus on robots exploring structured indoor environments which are often predictable and composed of repeating patterns. Most existing approaches, such as conventional frontier approaches, have difficulty leveraging the predictability and explore with simple heuristics such as `closest first'. Recent works use deep learning techniques to predict unknown regions of the map, using these predictions for information gain calculation. However, these approaches are often sensitive to the predicted map quality or do not reason over sensor coverage. To overcome these issues, our key insight is to jointly reason over what the robot can observe and its uncertainty to calculate probabilistic information gain. We introduce MapEx, a new exploration framework that uses predicted maps to form probabilistic sensor model for information gain estimation. MapEx generates multiple predicted maps based on observed information, and takes into consideration both the computed variances of predicted maps and estimated visible area to estimate the information gain of a given viewpoint. Experiments on the real-world KTH dataset showed on average 12.4% improvement than representative map-prediction based exploration and 25.4% improvement than nearest frontier approach., Comment: 7 pages

We introduce a method for removing CMB and anomalous microwave emission (AME, or spinning dust) intensity signals at high to intermediate Galactic latitudes in temperature sky maps at frequencies roughly between 5 and 40 GHz. The method relies on the assumption of a spatially uniform combined dust (AME and thermal) rms spectral energy distribution for these regions, but is otherwise model independent. A difference map is produced from input maps at two different frequencies in thermodynamic temperature: the two frequencies are chosen such that the rms AME signal in the lower frequency (~5 - 40 GHz) map is equivalent to the thermal dust emission rms in the higher frequency (~95 - 230 GHz) map. Given the high spatial correlation between AME and thermal dust, the resulting difference map is dominated by synchrotron and free-free foreground components, and can thus provide useful insight into the morphology and possible spectral variations of these components at high latitudes. We show examples of these difference maps obtained with currently available WMAP and Planck data and demonstrate the efficacy of CMB and dust mitigation using this method. We also use these maps, in conjunction with Haslam 408 MHz and WHAM H-alpha observations, to form an estimate of the diffuse synchrotron spectral index in temperature on degree scales. Quantum channel capacities give the fundamental performance limits for information flow over a communication channel. However, the prevalence of superadditivity is a major obstacle to understanding capacities, both quantitatively and conceptually. In contrast, examples exhibiting additivity, though relatively rare, offer crucial insights into the origins of nonadditivity and form the basis of our strongest upper bounds on capacity. Degradable channels, whose coherent information is provably additive, stand out as among the few classes of channels for which the quantum capacity is exactly computable. In this paper, we introduce two families of non-degradable channels whose coherent information remains additive, making their quantum capacities tractable. First, we demonstrate that channels capable of ``outperforming" their environment, under conditions weaker than degradability, can exhibit either strong or weak additivity of coherent information. Second, we explore a complementary construction that modifies a channel to preserve coherent information additivity while destroying the ``outperforming" property. We analyze how structural constraints guarantee strong and weak additivity and investigate how relaxing these constraints leads to the failure of strong additivity, with weak additivity potentially persisting.

This letter reports the first complete observation of magnetized collisionless shock precursors formed through the compression of Biermann-battery magnetic fields in laser produced plasmas. At OMEGA, lasers produce a supersonic CH plasma flow which is magnetized with Biermann-battery magnetic fields. The plasma flow collides with an unmagnetized hydrogen gas jet plasma to create a magnetized shock precursor. The situation where the flowing plasma carries the magnetic field is similar to the Venusian bow shock. Imaging 2$\omega$ Thomson scattering confirms that the interaction is collisionless and shows density and temperature jumps. Proton radiographs have regions of strong deflections and FLASH magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations show the presence of Biermann fields in the Thomson scattering region. Electrons are accelerated to energies of up to 100 keV in a power-law spectrum. OSIRIS particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, initialized with measured parameters, show the formation of a magnetized shock precursor and corroborate the experimental observables., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Existing shadow detection models struggle to differentiate dark image areas from shadows. In this paper, we tackle this issue by verifying that all detected shadows are real, i.e. they have paired shadow casters. We perform this step in a physically-accurate manner by differentiably re-rendering the scene and observing the changes stemming from carving out estimated shadow casters. Thanks to this approach, the RenDetNet proposed in this paper is the first learning-based shadow detection model whose supervisory signals can be computed in a self-supervised manner. The developed system compares favourably against recent models trained on our data. The study of meteorites and their microstructures is a topic which spans multiple fields of research, such as meteoritics and materials science. For materials scientists and engineers, the extreme and unusual conditions which these microstructures form allow for insight into materials which would exist at the edge of our thermomechanical processing abilities. One such microstructure found in low-shock event iron meteorites is Neumann bands. These bands are an array of lenticular deformation twins that form throughout the Fe-Ni matrix with numerous intersections, resulting in many high stress and strain regions within the material's surface. The existence of these regions and the shocks that formed them encourage atypical strain accommodating mechanisms and structural changes of the material. However, direct investigation of the deformation twin intersections and the microstructural behaviour in and around these regions has been limited. In this work, investigation of these regions in a Campo del Cielo meteorite fragment, with electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and forescatter electron (FSE) imaging, revealed two primary findings: high-intensity pattern doubling mirrored across the {110} band at twin-twin intersection and microband formation across the sample surface, which suggest multilayer twinning and constraint of the crystal structure at points of twin-twin intersection. Microbands were found to form along the {110} plane and in regions near Neumann bands. The simultaneous existence of Neumann bands (microtwins) and microbands is presented here for a BCC material, and it is believed the Neumann band and microbands formed during different types and/or shock events. The presence of both Neumann bands and microbands within a BCC iron meteorite is previously unreported and may be valuable in furthering our understanding of shock deformation within iron-based materials., Comment: As submitted pre-print

The Aharonov-Bohm effect is a quantum mechanical phenomenon that demonstrates how potentials can have observable effects even when the classical fields associated with those potentials are absent. Initially proposed for electromagnetic interactions, this effect has been experimentally confirmed and extensively studied over the years. More recently, the effect has been observed in the context of gravitational interactions using atom interferometry. Additionally, recent predictions suggest that temporal variations in the phase of an electron wave function will induce modulation sidebands in the energy levels of an atomic clock, solely driven by a time-varying scalar gravitational potential [1]. In this study, we consider the atomic clock as a two-level system undergoing continuous Rabi oscillations between the electron's ground and excited state. We assume the photons driving the transition are precisely frequency-stabilized to match the transition, enabling accurate clock comparisons. Our analysis takes into account, that when an atom transitions from its ground state to an excited state, it absorbs energy, increasing its mass according to the mass-energy equivalence principle. Due to the mass difference between the two energy levels, we predict that an atomic clock in an eccentric orbit will exhibit a constant frequency shift relative to a ground clock corresponding to the orbit's average gravitational redshift, with additional modulation sidebands due to the time-varying gravitational potential.

This paper studies the gradient flow lines for the $L^2$ norm square of the Higgs field defined on the moduli space of semistable rank $2$ Higgs bundles twisted by a line bundle of positive degree over a compact Riemann surface $X$. The main result is that these spaces of flow lines have an algebro-geometric classification in terms of secant varieties for different embeddings of $X$ into the projectivisation of the negative eigenspace of the Hessian at a critical point. The compactification of spaces of flow lines given by adding broken flow lines then has a natural interpretation via a projection to Bertram's resolution of secant varieties., Comment: 22 pages

JWST provides new opportunities to cross-check the HST Cepheid/SNeIa distance ladder, which yields the most precise local measure of H0. We analyze early JWST subsamples (~1/4 of the HST sample) from the SH0ES and CCHP groups, calibrated by a single anchor (N4258). We find HST Cepheid distances agree well (~1 sigma) with all 8 combinations of methods, samples, and telescopes: JWST Cepheids, TRGB, and JAGB by either group, plus HST TRGB and Miras. The comparisons explicitly include the measurement uncertainty of each method in N4258, an oft-neglected but dominant term. Mean differences are ~0.03 mag, far smaller than the 0.18 mag "Hubble tension." Combining all measures produces the strongest constraint yet on the linearity of HST Cepheid distances, 0.994+-0.010, ruling out distance-dependent bias or offset as the source of the tension at ~7 sigma. Yet, measurements of H0 from current JWST subsamples produce large sampling differences whose size and direction we can directly estimate from the full HST set. We show that Delta(H0)~2.5 km/s/Mpc between the CCHP JWST program and the full HST sample is entirely consistent with differences in sample selection. Combining all JWST samples produces a new, distance-limited set of 16 SNeIa at D<25 Mpc and more closely resembles the full sample thanks to "reversion to the mean" of larger samples. Using JWST Cepheids, JAGB, and TRGB, we find 73.4+-2.1, 72.2+-2.2, and 72.1+-2.2 km/s/Mpc, respectively. Explicitly accounting for SNe in common, the combined-sample three-method result from JWST is H0=72.6+-2.0, similar to H0=72.8 expected from HST Cepheids in the same galaxies. The small JWST sample trivially lowers the Hubble tension significance due to small-sample statistics and is not yet competitive with the HST set (42 SNeIa and 4 anchors), which yields 73.2+-0.9. Two interesting phenomena for the construction of quantum states are that of mutually unbiased bases and that of balanced states. We explore a constructive approach to each phenomenon that involves orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. In the case of mutually unbiased bases, we show that this approach does not produce such bases. In the case of balanced states, we provide examples of pairs of orthonormal bases and states that are balanced with respect to them. We also consider extensions of these ideas to the infinite dimensional setting.

Dynamical heterogeneity, in which transitory local fluctuations occur in the conformation and dynamics of constituent particles, is widely hypothesized to be essential to evolution of supercooled liquids into the glass state. Yet its microscopic spatiotemporal phenomenology has remained unobservable in virtually all molecular glass forming liquids. Because recent theoretical advances predict that corresponding dynamical heterogeneity could occur in supercooled magnetic monopole fluids, we searched for such phenomena in Dy2Ti2O7. By measuring its microsecond-resolved spontaneous magnetization fluctuations $M(t,T)$ we discovered a sharp bifurcation in monopole noise characteristics below $T \approx 1500$ mK, with the appearance of powerful spontaneous monopole current bursts. This intense dynamics emerges upon entering the supercooled monopole fluid regime, reaches maximum strength near $T \approx 500$ mK and then terminates along with coincident loss of ergodicity near $T \lesssim 250$ mK. Moreover, the four-point dynamical susceptibility $\chi_4(T, t)$ is observed directly and evolves as predicted when dynamical heterogeneity is present, clearly revealing its diverging length scales $\xi(T)$. This overall phenomenology greatly expands our empirical knowledge of supercooled monopole fluids and, more generally, demonstrates direct detection of the time sequence, magnitude, statistics and correlations of dynamical heterogeneity, access to which may greatly accelerate fundamental vitrification studies.

Modern artificial intelligence (AI) systems are powered by foundation models. This paper presents a new set of foundation models, called Llama 3. It is a herd of language models that natively support multilinguality, coding, reasoning, and tool usage. Our largest model is a dense Transformer with 405B parameters and a context window of up to 128K tokens. This paper presents an extensive empirical evaluation of Llama 3. We find that Llama 3 delivers comparable quality to leading language models such as GPT-4 on a plethora of tasks. We publicly release Llama 3, including pre-trained and post-trained versions of the 405B parameter language model and our Llama Guard 3 model for input and output safety. The paper also presents the results of experiments in which we integrate image, video, and speech capabilities into Llama 3 via a compositional approach. We observe this approach performs competitively with the state-of-the-art on image, video, and speech recognition tasks. The resulting models are not yet being broadly released as they are still under development.

The latest result from The ORGAN Experiment, an axion haloscope is presented. This iteration of the experiment operated at millikelvin temperatures using a flux-driven Josephson parametric amplifier (JPA) for reduced noise, along with various other upgrades over previous iterations. Covering the $25.45 - 26.27\,\mu\text{eV}$ ($6.15-6.35$ GHz) mass (frequency) range, this near-quantum limited phase of ORGAN employs a conducting rod resonator and a 7-T solenoidal magnet to place the most sensitive exclusion limits on axion-photon coupling in the range to date, with $|g_{a\gamma\gamma}| \gtrsim 2.8\times10^{-13}$ at a 95% confidence level., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Following advances in the abstract theory of composites, we develop rapidly converging series expansions about $z=\infty$ for the resolvent ${\bf R}(z)=[z{\bf I}-{\bf P}^\dagger{\bf Q}{\bf P}]^{-1}$ where ${\bf Q}$ is an orthogonal projection and ${\bf P}$ is such that ${\bf P}{\bf P}^\dagger$ is an orthogonal projection. It is assumed that the spectrum of ${\bf P}^\dagger{\bf Q}{\bf P}$ lies within the interval $[z^-,z^+]$ for some known $z^+\leq 1$ and $z^-\geq 0$ and that the actions of the projections ${\bf Q}$ and ${\bf P}{\bf P}^\dagger$ are easy to compute. The series converges in the entire $z$-plane excluding the cut $[z^-,z^+]$. It is obtained using subspace substitution, where the desired resolvent is tied to a resolvent in a larger space and ${\bf Q}$ gets replaced by a projection $\underline{{\bf Q}}$ that is no longer orthogonal. Cerebral aneurysm rupture, leading to subarachnoid hemorrhage with a high mortality rate, disproportionately affects younger populations, resulting in a significant loss of productive life years. A significant proportion of these deaths is due to aneurysmal re-bleeding within the first three days following the initial bleed, prior to treatment. While early aneurysm treatment is recommended, there is no consensus on the ideal timing, and emergency treatment offers only an incremental benefit at a significant cost. Although various multivariable prediction models have been proposed to provide personalized risk assessments, no validated patient-specific predictor is available to rationalize emergency treatment. Furthermore, no model has yet incorporated emerging computational biomechanics-based biomarkers such as wall tension. In this paper, we proposed and validated an efficient semi-automatic pipeline to compute patient-specific cerebral aneurysm wall tension as a potential biomarker for the likelihood of re-bleeding. Our pipeline uses the patient's computed tomography angiography (CTA) image obtained at the time of subarachnoid hemorrhage diagnosis to create a patient-specific biomechanical model of the cerebral aneurysm using the finite element method. A distinctive feature of our approach is the straightforward model creation and wall tension computation using shell finite elements, without requiring patient-specific material properties or aneurysm wall thickness. Our non-invasive, patient-specific method for cerebral aneurysm wall tension can potentially provide individualized risk prediction and enhance clinical decision-making.

Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the Coma cluster have velocity dispersion profiles that are in full agreement with the predictions of Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) in isolation. However, the external field effect (EFE) from the cluster seriously deteriorates this agreement. It has been suggested that this could be related to the fact that UDGs are out-of-equilibrium objects whose stars have been heated by the cluster tides or that they recently fell onto the cluster on radial orbits, such that their velocity dispersion may not reflect the EFE at their instantaneous distance from the cluster center. Here, we simulate UDGs within the Coma cluster in MOND, using the Phantom of Ramses (\textsc{por}) code, and show that if UDGs are initially at equilibrium within the cluster, tides are not sufficient to increase their velocity dispersions to values as high as the observed ones. On the other hand, if they are on a first radial infall onto the cluster, they can keep high velocity dispersions without being destroyed until their first pericentric passage. We conclude that, without alterations such as a screening of the EFE in galaxy clusters or much higher baryonic masses than currently estimated, in the MOND context UDGs must be out-of-equilibrium objects on their first infall onto the cluster., Comment: 10 Pages, 9 Figures, accepted by A&A

RF-ICE is a signal processing platform for the readout of large arrays of superconducting resonators. Designed for flexibility, the system's low digital latency and ability to independently and dynamically set the frequency and amplitude of probe tones in real time has enabled previously-inaccessible views of resonator behaviour, and opened the door to novel resonator control schemes. We introduce a multi-frequency imaging technique, developed with RF-ICE, which allows simultaneous observation of the entire resonance bandwidth. We demonstrate the use of this technique in the examination of the response of superconducting resonators to variations in applied readout current and thermal loading. We observe that, used in conjunction with a conventional frequency sweep at sufficiently large amplitude to induce resonance bifurcation, the multi-frequency imaging technique reveals a resonator response which is not captured by the frequency sweep measurement alone. We demonstrate that equivalent resonant frequency shifts can be achieved using either thermal, optical, or readout loading, and use this equivalence to counteract a change in thermal loading by digitally modulating the readout current through a resonator. We develop and implement a proof-of-concept closed-loop negative electro-quasiparticle feedback algorithm which first sets and then maintains the resonant frequency of a lumped element kinetic inductance detector while the loading on it is varied. Although this simple implementation is not yet suitable to deploy at scale, it demonstrates the utility of this feedback technique to improve linearity while addressing amplifier distortion, resonator response non-uniformity, and crosstalk. Global numerical weather models are starting to resolve atmospheric moist convection which comes with a critical need for observational constraints. One avenue for such constraints is spaceborne radar which tend to operate at three wavelengths, Ku-, Ka- and W-band. Many studies of deep convection in the past have primarily leveraged Ku-band because it is less affected by attenuation and multiple scattering. However, future spaceborne radar missions might not contain a Ku-band radar and thus considering the view of convection from Ka-band or W-band compared to the Ku-band would be useful. This study examines a coincident dataset between the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Mission and CloudSat as well as the entire GPM record to compare convective characteristics across various wavelengths within deep convection. We find that W-band reflectivity (Z) tends to maximize near the Ku-band defined echo-top while Ka-band often maximizes 4-5 km below. The height of the maximum Z above the melting level for W-band does not linearly relate to the Ku-band maximum. However, using the full GPM record the Ka-band 30 dBZ echo-tops can be linearly related to the Ku-band 40 dBZ echo-top with an $R^2$ of 0.62 and a root mean squared error of about 1 km. The spatial distribution of echo-tops from Ka-band corresponds well to the Ku-band echo-tops, highlighting regions of relatively large ice water path. This paper suggests that Ka-band only missions, like NASA's Investigation for Convective Updrafts, should be able to characterize global convection in a similar manner to a Ku-band system.

The t0.technology Control and Readout System (CRS) is a modular microwave control and readout system for mm-wave and radio astronomy, THz imaging, noise radar, and superconducting qubit control. The configuration discussed in this work implements firmware for readout of microwave Kinetic Inductance Detector (KID) arrays. The CRS can operate 4,096 KIDs over 2.5 GHz of complex bandwidth between 0-10 GHz, typically allocated across four independent RF chains at 1,024x multiplexing and 625 MHz of complex bandwidth each. Every CRS can operate as a standalone unit or collectively within one or more backplane-enabled subracks that distribute power, clocking, and synchronization, scaling to an arbitrary number of channels. Each fully populated subrack supports arrays of more than 65,000 KIDs. The signal processing and control software supports recent innovations in multi-probe measurements and dynamic feedback modes, which are described in (Rouble et al. 2024). The CRS has recently been selected as the new baseline readout system for the proposed South Pole Telescope instrument, SPT-3G+.
