Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from wood and wood composites are important contributors to odor profiles of indoor environments and can significantly influence human health and well-being. GC-MS/FID and gas chromatography (GC) with olfactometric detection (GC-O) are employed for the identification and characterization of odorants. Four different sample preparation methods are evaluated on wood strands and isocyanate adhesive–based oriented strand boards (OSBs) made from Pinus sylvestris L.: among these, dynamic headspace extraction thermal desorption ((dynamic) HS-TD), head space solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME), head space solid phase microextraction Arrow (HS-SPME Arrow), and liquid injection of a CH2Cl2 solvent extract. The olfactometric investigation revealed over 30 odor-active substances of cyclic and acyclic monoterpene, monoterpenoid ketone, monoterpenoid aldehyde, monoterpenoid alcohol, monoterpenoid ester, aliphatic aldehyde, alcohol, and acid and phenolic chemistry. Compared to liquid injection, (dynamic) HS-TD was found to result in a similar number of odorants (20 vs. 24), whereas HS SPME Arrow shows good performance with minimal instrumental effort, notably for monoterpene and aldehyde compounds. Native wood vs. OSB showed high concentrations of saturated and unsaturated aldehydes for the wood board sample. A bacterial mixture of Pseudomonas putida and Pseudomonas fluorescens has recently shown the potential to completely reduce monoterpenes within pine wood particles on a laboratory scale. This bacterial combination was then applied onto pine wood strands to obtain emission-reduced oriented strand boards (OSB) produced on a technical scale. Laboratory tests with bacterial inoculated strands were carried out to optimise parameters such as aeration and incubation time. Residual terpene emissions were measured by solid-phase microextraction/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (SPME/GC-MS) analysis. Daily aeration, specific pre-cultivation, and increased inoculum size eventually resulted in a reduction of the major softwood terpenes a-pinene, β-pinene, and Δ3-carene by 60, 70, and 40%, respectively, after only 2 days of incubation. Based on these results, OSB were manufactured from strands after bacterial pre-treatment for 2 or 4 days. As expected, terpene emissions from OSB decreased with increasing incubation time. However, even after only 2 days of incubation, a-pinene and β-pinene emissions were appreciably reduced by 40 and 70%, respectively. The method developed here thus appears to be feasible for industrial application although a further reduction of pretreatment time would be advantageous. A large-scale test set-up was designed to evaluate the volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions of building materials in a real room situation but under laboratory conditions. Two model rooms (ModR) with a volume of 30 m3 each were constructed of the wood-based building materials X-lam and OSB, respectively. Temperature and relative humidity (RH) inside the ModR were kept in a range of 21°C-25°C and 45%-55% RH. VOCs were collected at 13 different times over a period of 23 weeks, and the total VOC (TVOC) concentration was calculated from GC/MS data. Results were quantified as toluene equivalents (TE). In the X-lam-ModR, the TVOC concentration decreased by 64% over the whole measurement period from 115 to 41 μg m-3 TE. Terpenes were the most abundant substance group and accounted, on average, for 80% of the TVOC concentration. In the OSB-ModR, the TVOC concentration decreased by 72% from 443 to 124 μg m-3 TE. Aldehydes showed the highest concentrations, accounting, on average, for 52% of the TVOC, while 38% were terpenes. The results show that this type of test provides realistic data for the praxis. Pine wood particles were treated with effluents from the wood-board manufacturing industry or from a communal clarification plant, and the effect of these treatments on aldehyde emissions of wood material was tested. Pine wood strands were treated in the same manner and strand boards were produced from the treated material on a laboratory scale. The 28-day volatile organic compound emissions of the boards were determined in a microchamber using Tenax-TDAS/GC-MS analytics. Boards made from treated strands exhibited significantly lower aldehyde emissions compared to control boards. Analyses of microflora and of wood extractives confirmed that microbial metabolism in industrial effluents consumed unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs) present in wood. As UFAs are the source of aldehyde emissions due to auto-oxidation, the aldehyde emission was consequently reduced. A routine treatment of wood raw material with properly chosen industrial effluents may therefore be regarded as a cost-reducing and efficient method for the utilisation of industrial waste waters. Sapstain fungi, which reduce the value of pine wood, were isolated from an industrial wood yard in north-eastern Germany. The predominant wood discolouring species on the industrial wood yard and in the forests of the investigated region was Sphaeropsis sapinea (syn. Diplodia pinea), but Ophiostoma minus was also found. These fungi were challenged with antagonistic micro-organisms in laboratory trials and in field experiments. Amongst the tested microorganisms only strains of filamentous fungi ( Trichoderma sp. and Phlebiopsis gigantea) could control the sapstain fungi on pine wood blocks efficiently. Although P. gigantea was unable to inhibit stain formation completely, the wood was bleached by this fungus in later incubation stages. In two field trials, sapstain on pine wood logs was successfully retarded for a period of 10 and 12 weeks, respectively, with a white sporulating mutant of Trichoderma harzianum. Thus, the concept using filamentous fungi as antagonists against sapstain developed under laboratory conditions also proved to be valid under natural conditions in forest eco-systems. Microbial mechanisms of lignin degradation may be utilised for solid-state fermentations other than biopulping, during which the selective conversion of lignin is required. The current paper reviews current work into selective lignin conversion, with emphasis on the contributions made by our research group, which consists of researchers from five different laboratories. Three of them cooperate within Wood K plus. The recent research of this group has focussed on fermentations utilising the unique metabolism of selective white-rot fungi to modify wood surfaces during relatively short fermentation times of less than one week and on research into the molecular mechanisms causing these modifications. Lignin degradation by selective fungi (e.g. Ceriporiopsis subvermispora and species of the genus Phlebia) on the wood surfaces was significant after three days. After seven days the overall lignin content of spruce wood shavings was reduced by more than 3.5 %. Lignin loss was accompanied by an increase of extractable substances. To evaluate small changes and to trace the fungal modification processes, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic (FTIR) techniques and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy were applied and adapted. The spectra recorded in the near infrared region (FT-NIR) turned out to be very useful for kinetic studies of the biopulping/biomodification processes and a good method to evaluate the capabilities of fungi to modify wood surfaces within this short period.
