1. Broadband ferromagnetic resonance in Mn-doped Li ferrite nanoparticles

Abstract

Lithium ferrites are well known materials due to their numerous technological applications especially in microwave devices. Mn-doped lithium ferrite nanoparticles were prepared by sol-gel technique by means of Pechini method, and then annealed at different temperatures in 250 to 1000 {\deg}C range. XRD confirms spinel formation with particle size in the 15 to 200 nm range, with increased size with annealing temperature. Microwave magnetoabsorption data of annealed lithium ferrite nanoparticles, obtained with a broadband system based on a network analyzer operating up to 8.5 GHz are presented. At fields up to 200 mT we can observe a broad absorption peak that shifts to higher frequencies with magnetic field according to ferromagnetic resonance theory. The amplitude of absorption, up to 85%, together with the frequency width of about 4.5 GHz makes this material suitable as wave absorber. Samples annealed at higher temperatures show a behaviour similar to polycrystalline samples, thus suggesting their multidomain character

Abstract

Astrophysics spans an enormous range of questions on scales from individual planets to the entire cosmos. To address the richness of 21st century astrophysics requires a corresponding richness of telescopes spanning all bands and all messengers. Much scientific benefit comes from having the multi-wavelength capability available at the same time. Most of these bands,or measurement sensitivities, require space-based missions. Historically, NASA has addressed this need for breadth with a small number of flagship-class missions and a larger number of Explorer missions. While the Explorer program continues to flourish, there is a large gap between Explorers and strategic missions. A fortunate combination of new astrophysics technologies with new, high capacity, low dollar-per-kg to orbit launchers, and new satellite buses allow for cheaper missions with capabilities approaching strategic mission levels. NASA has recognized these developments by calling for Probe-class mission ideas for mission studies, spanning most of the electromagnetic spectrum from GeV gamma-rays to the far infrared, and the new messengers of neutrinos and ultra-high energy cosmic rays. Abstract

Freshwater macroinvertebrates are a diverse group and play key ecological roles, including accelerating nutrient cycling, filtering water, controlling primary producers, and providing food for predators. Their differences in tolerances and short generation times manifest in rapid community responses to change. Macroinvertebrate community composition is an indicator of water quality. In Europe, efforts to improve water quality following environmental legislation, primarily starting in the 1980s, may have driven a recovery of macroinvertebrate communities. Towards understanding temporal and spatial variation of these organisms, we compiled the TREAM dataset (Time seRies of European freshwAter Macroinvertebrates), consisting of macroinvertebrate community time series from 1,816 river and stream sites (mean length of 19.2 years and 14.9 sampling years) of 22 European countries sampled between 1968 and 2020. In total, the data include >93 million sampled individuals of 2,648 taxa from 959 genera and 212 families. These data can be used to test questions ranging from identifying drivers of the population dynamics of specific taxa to assessing the success of legislative and management restoration efforts.

Abstract

We present a method of cross-calibrating the polarization angle of a polarimeter using BICEP Galactic observations. \bicep\ was a ground based experiment using an array of 49 pairs of polarization sensitive bolometers observing from the geographic South Pole at 100 and 150 GHz. The BICEP polarimeter is calibrated to +/-0.01 in cross-polarization and less than +/-0.7 degrees in absolute polarization orientation. BICEP observed the temperature and polarization of the Galactic plane (R.A= 100 degrees ~ 270 degrees and Dec. = -67 degrees ~ -48 degrees). We show that the statistical error in the 100 GHz BICEP Galaxy map can constrain the polarization angle offset of WMAP Wband to 0.6 degrees +\- 1.4 degrees. The expected 1 sigma errors on the polarization angle cross-calibration for Planck or EPIC are 1.3 degrees and 0.3 degrees at 100 and 150 GHz, respectively. We also discuss the expected improvement of the BICEP Galactic field observations with forthcoming BICEP2 and Keck observations., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures and 2 tables. Abstract

Owing to a long history of anthropogenic pressures, freshwater ecosystems are among the most vulnerable to biodiversity loss 1. Mitigation measures, including wastewater treatment and hydromorphological restoration, have aimed to improve environmental quality and foster the recovery of freshwater biodiversity 2. Here, using 1,816 time series of freshwater invertebrate communities collected across 22 European countries between 1968 and 2020, we quantified temporal trends in taxonomic and functional diversity and their responses to environmental pressures and gradients. We observed overall increases in taxon richness (0.73% per year), functional richness (2.4% per year) and abundance (1.17% per year). However, these increases primarily occurred before the 2010s, and have since plateaued. Freshwater communities downstream of dams, urban areas and cropland were less likely to experience recovery. Communities at sites with faster rates of warming had fewer gains in taxon richness, functional richness and abundance. Although biodiversity gains in the 1990s and 2000s probably reflect the effectiveness of water-quality improvements and restoration projects, the decelerating trajectory in the 2010s suggests that the current measures offer diminishing returns. Given new and persistent pressures on freshwater ecosystems, including emerging pollutants, climate change and the spread of invasive species, we call for additional mitigation to revive the recovery of freshwater biodiversity.

Abstract

BICEP is a ground-based millimeter-wave bolometric array designed to target the primordial gravity wave signature on the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at degree angular scales. Currently in its third year of operation at the South Pole, BICEP is measuring the CMB polarization with unprecedented sensitivity at 100 and 150 GHz in the cleanest available 2% of the sky, as well as deriving independent constraints on the diffuse polarized foregrounds with select observations on and off the Galactic plane. Abstract

In this comprehensive study, we synthesized Co0.6Zn0.4Fe2O4cubic spinel via the sol–gel method and characterized its structural, thermal, and optical properties. X-ray diffraction (XRD) verified the crystallization within the cubic Fd-3 m space group, and a detailed analysis determined a crystallite size ranging from 47 to 58 nm. Notably, the calculated crystallite size of 49.4 nm revealed inherent limitations in Scherer’s formula, which does not account for intrinsic strain effects from crystal defects, grain boundaries, and stacking. Optical investigations, utilizing UV–Vis absorption spectroscopy, unveiled a direct optical band gap of 1.26 eV, suggesting semiconductor behavior. The material’s thermal conductivity was found to be highly temperature sensitive, reaching its maximum value for both spin orientations at 900 K, with a quantified value of ke/τ = 4 × 1014 W/(mKs). This thermal behavior, along with the observed disorder (Eu value of 1.41 eV) and higher Urbach energy, offers valuable insights into the material’s response under varying temperature conditions, essential for applications in diverse technological domains.

Abstract

Astrophysics spans an enormous range of questions on scales from individual planets to the entire cosmos. To address the richness of 21st century astrophysics requires a corresponding richness of telescopes spanning all bands and all messengers. Much scientific benefit comes from having the multi-wavelength capability available at the same time. Most of these bands, or measurement sensitivities, require space-based missions. Historically, NASA has addressed this need for breadth with a small number of flagship-class missions and a larger number of Explorer missions. While the Explorer program continues to flourish, there is a large gap between Explorers and strategic missions.

Abstract

Recently, Organ-on-a-Chip (OoC) platforms have arisen as an increasingly relevant experimental tool for successfully replicating human physiology and disease. However, there is a lack of a standard technology to monitor the OoC parameters, especially in a non-invasive and label-free way. Photoacoustic (PA) systems can be considered an alternative and accurate assessment method for OoC platforms. PA systems combine an illumination source to excite the sample molecules, with an ultrasound sensor to measure the generated ultrasonic waves, combining the advantages of optics and acoustic methodologies to safely acquire tridimensional signals and images at various depths.This work is focused on the design, implementation and test of an acquisition electronics circuit, based on the PA principle, for hemoglobin (Hb) detection, aiming towards a future integration within an OoC platform. Based on the measured frequency response of commercial piezoelectric transducers, an electronics design comprising a differential charge amplifier and a band-pass filter was developed. Experimentally it was verified Hb detection for concentrations of Hb between 2.5 and 10 mg/mL in aqueous solutions, roughly 48 times lower than the typical in vivo blood concentrations. This creates the possibility of developing this technique to monitor Hb at low concentrations in small volumes, which is highly appropriate for OoC devices.

Abstract

Microbes play a critical role in plant litter decomposition and influence the fate of carbon in rivers and riparian zones. When decomposing low-nutrient plant litter, microbes acquire nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from the environment (i.e., nutrient immobilization), and this process is potentially sensitive to nutrient loading and changing climate. Nonetheless, environmental controls on immobilization are poorly understood because rates are also influenced by plant litter chemistry, which is coupled to the same environmental factors. Here we used a standardized, low-nutrient organic matter substrate (cotton strips) to quantify nutrient immobilization at 100 paired stream and riparian sites representing 11 biomes worldwide. Immobilization rates varied by three orders of magnitude, were greater in rivers than riparian zones, and were strongly correlated to decomposition rates. In rivers, P immobilization rates were controlled by surface water phosphate concentrations, but N immobilization rates were not related to inorganic N. The N:P of immobilized nutrients was tightly constrained to a molar ratio of 10:1 despite wide variation in surface water N:P. Immobilization rates were temperature-dependent in riparian zones but not related to temperature in rivers. However, in rivers nutrient supply ultimately controlled whether microbes could achieve the maximum expected decomposition rate at a given temperature. Collectively, we demonstrated that exogenous nutrient supply and immobilization are critical control points for decomposition of organic matter.
