Tyrimo tikslas – atlikus mokslinės literatūros duomenų bazių ir darnios architektūros pavyzdžių apžvalgą, susisteminus darnios architektūros raidą ir problematiką pasaulyje bei situaciją Lietuvoje, per kiekvieno dešimtmečio, pradedant 1980-aisiais, progresą ir regresą ieškoti alternatyvių sprendinių šiandieninei darnios architektūros situacijai. Tyrimas įgyvendinamas dviem etapais: pirmiausiai atliekama išsami kiekybinė ir kokybinė literatūros analizė ir kiekvieno dešimtmečio progreso ir regreso darnios architektūros srityje analizė raiškos, technologijų, medžiagų požiūriais, remiantis įgyvendintais darnios architektūros pavyzdžiais; antrajame etape atliekama šiandieninės darnios architektūros problematikos pasaulyje bei situacijos Lietuvoje analizė ir vertinimas., The aim of the research is to accomplish the review of scientific literature databases and the examples of sustainable architecture and, after systematizing the development and problems related to sustainability perspective and sustainable architecture in the world and the situation in Lithuania, to search for alternative solutions to the current situation of sustainable architecture in each decade, starting in the 1980s. The research is implemented in two stages: first, a comprehensive quantitative and qualitative literature review and analysis of progress and regression in the field of sustainable architecture for each decade in terms of expression, technology, materials are carried out based on the implemented examples of sustainable architecture; in the second stage, the analysis and assessment of today’s issues of sustainable architecture in the world and the situation in Lithuania are performed.

This paper presents the methodology and results of the research aimed to identify the current and potential functions of open public spaces in post-Soviet modernist urban districts in the context of sustainable urban development. The research is based on the sociotope mapping methodology facilitating the identification and interpretation of functional characteristics of urban open public spaces. The data for this research has been collected in three selected pilot multi-apartment modernistic districts of Kaunas city (Lithuania) using two sociological research tools – site observation protocols and user questionnaires. The research results show the need for actors involved in planning and (re)development of modernistic districts to incorporate a larger diversity of space elements enabling different local area users (individuals, families, organizations) to use and experience more natural, social, economic and other values available locally at different time (year, day) periods.

Darbe pristatoma senėjimo savo gyvenamojoje aplinkoje koncepcija, išskiriamos su jos realizavimu architektūrinėmis priemonėmis susijusios problemos ir galimybės. Šios koncepcijos realizavimo galimybės Lietuvoje, miesto ir kaimo sąveikos zonoje iliustruojamos eksperimentiniu senėjimui savo namuose pritaikyto kvartalo projektu. Eksperimentiniam projektui buvo pasirinktas sklypas buvusio Linkuvos dvaro sodybos teritorijoje, Mosėdžio g., Kaune. Ši glaudų ryšį tiek su gamtine, tiek su urbanizuota aplinka turinti teritorija leido atskleisti biofilinio projektavimo ir universalaus dizaino principų pritaikymo galimybes kuriant fiziniu požiūriu prieinamą ir psichologiškai priimtiną senėjimui namuose pritaikytą aplinką., This study presents the concept of aging at home and highlights the problems and opportunities related to its implementation by architectural means. The possibilities of realizing this concept in Lithuania, in the urban-rural interface zone, are illustrated by an experimental project of a quarter adapted for aging at home. A plot of land in the territory of the former Linkuva manor residence, Mosėdžio St., Kaunas was chosen for the experimental project. This area, which has a close connection with both the natural and the urban environment, has revealed the possibilities of applying the principles of biophilic design and universal design in creating a physically accessible and psychologically acceptable environment adapted to aging at home.

This socio-demographic trend presents new challenges forthe design of the living environment. The concept of universal designis increasingly appliedto improve environmental accessibility. Meanwhile, the psychological well-being of the elderly in the living environment is still not receiving sufficientattention. The article analysesthe potential of applying biophilic design principles to the design for the elderlypeople in urban and rural environments. The pilotsociological surveyof Lithuanian elderly people and their close people living in urban and rural locationsaims to determine the psychological acceptability of biophilic design solutions.

The article demonstrates the development and application of activities with serious play and serious game features for the facilitated process of content analysis of images of urban public spaces. The study involves accumulation of the material for the analysis, develops the coding categories and their visual representations – pictograms, analyzes and groups the images and attributes the pictograms to them, marks the insight on the sticky notes, develops the matrixes of functioning of urban spaces, and discusses the outcomes. The developed set of activities based on the hands-on approach can be used in research and studies and could be adapted to local community-based activities.

The urban economists have stressed the importance of various amenities for the attractiveness of urban areas for residents and businesses and built cultural heritage can be considered as one of such amenities, the benefits of which should not be overlooked. This research was aimed to analyze the influence of heritage aspect including the heritage status or features of the building and the historic built environment in general on the real estate prices and development in Kaunas using hedonic price method. Two sets of data were collected for the analysis - general, including heritage buildings and including new construction since 2013. The research has demonstrated that heritage status and the year of construction (as older buildings can be considered having heritage features) have no significant positive influence on the real estate prices. Meanwhile, the location, heritage context and the architectural distinctiveness of new architecture have a direct influence on the real estate prices. The heritage context correlates with architectural quality of new construction as well. This reveals the benefits of heritage context both for the real estate developers and households; however, the study shows the unemployed social-economic potential of historic buildings as generators and maintainers of heritage context.

This research demonstrates the potential of content analysis method in urban research in the context of the study of modernization of Lithuanian cities during the Soviet period and its influence on contemporary urbanism. The content analysis of visual material (photographs, postcards and other images) is integrated as one of the methods of the study, allowing to identify the social phenomena in public spaces and their changes throughout the period from the inter-war era to contemporary. The descriptive analysis presented in this article demonstrates changes in people and activities, in scale and shape of public spaces, mobility and safety.

International audience; The ongoing territorial urbanization changes the character of the rural-urban interface both in the so-called devel-oped/developing countries and post-Soviet territories in transition as Lithuania. Even if the rurban landscapes, having the features of both urban and rural environment, are the global phenomenon, the local-national, regional, local etc. peculiarities can also be distinguished. The aim of this research was to analyze the rural-urban interface in Lithuania and to distinguish the global trends, local peculiarities, and the factors that determine or could determine the identity of the country's rurban landscapes. The research has demonstrated such global trends as metropolisation, industrialization, commercialization, uniformity or internationalization and local distinctive aspects related with the character of the natural landscape, urbanization patterns, and history of the rural landscape in the rural-urban interface in Lithuania. In the concluding section we have presented some management guidelines for the rurban landscapes of the country based on our findings: view the question of the rural-urban interface in the context of overall country's regional development and in the context of the development strategy of a particular urban settlement, follow the strategy of "brown urbanism", maintain historic continuity together with innovation, encourage multifunctionality and self-sufficient communities, use the ecological and recreational benefits of these areas, maintain their distinctiveness, develop unique image and aesthetics with optimal visual diversity.

The focus of this research is rural manor residencies, which in the course of history functioned in the agricultural and natural settings and currently became absorbed into urbanised areas. The methodology of the research has included the analysis of literature, historical and contemporary maps, and photographical surveys of the manor residencies in the territory of Kaunas city. The aim of our research has been to identify the trends of research in the area of rural-urban interface and to determine the characteristics of management and preservation of Lithuanian manor residencies under the urban pressure.

The focus of the research was to analyze how theuse, re-use and the preservation of the architectural heritage couldcontribute to the socioeconomic revitalization of historic urbancentres. The research was based on the analysis of literature andexamples and was carried out from the global perspective: theexperience of different countries on how the architectural heritagecould become a socioeconomic catalyst was reviewed and compared.The results of the research include the conceptual framework forthe architectural heritage as a socioeconomic opportunity forrehabilitation of historic built environment based on the idea thatsustainably managed use, re-use, preservation, and maintenanceof architectural heritage can have multipartite positive impacton revitalization and successful development of historic urbanenvironment.

Antrojoje XX a. pusėje nekilnojamasis kultūros paveldas patraukė ekonomikos srityje dirbančių mokslininkų dėmesį. Bandoma įvertinti ne tik ekonominę paveldo įtaką, bet ir bendrąją jo ekonominę vertę. Laiku bėgant buvo nustatytas platus nekilnojamojo kultūros paveldo teikiamų ekonominių verčių spektras ir plėtojami vertinimo metodai joms nustatyti. Šiuo metu pripažįstama, kad nekilnojamasis kultūros paveldas gali teikti ne tik rinkos, bet ir ne rinkos ekonomines vertes, kurioms nustatyti taikoma nemažai vertinimo metodų, grindžiamų tiek egzistuojančiais rinkų duomenimis, tiek sociologinių apklausų teikiamais duomenimis. Vienas tokių metodų – numatomojo vertinimo metodas. Šis metodas vis plačiau taikomas nekilnojamojo kultūros paveldo ne rinkos vertėms nustatyti tiek išsivysčiusiose, tiek besivystančiose šalyse. Visgi pereinamąjį laikotarpį išgyvenančios postkomunistinės valstybės šiuo požiūriu yra išimtis. Numatomojo vertinimo metodo taikymo besivystančiose valstybėse patirtis parodė, kad, taikant šį metodą, būtina įvertinti sociokultūrinį vietos kontekstą ir imtis papildomų priemonių siekiant vertinimo rezultatų patikimumo ir tikslumo. Sociokultūrinio konteksto įtaka numatomojo vertinimo metodo taikymo galimybėms skatina paanalizuoti šio metodo taikymo ypatumus postkomunistinėse valstybėse. Straipsnio tikslas – išskirti pereinamojo laikotarpio postkomunistinių valstybių socialinės aplinkos ypatumus ir nustatyti galimą jų įtaką numatomojo vertinimo metodo taikymo galimybėms. Tyrimo rezultatai gali būti naudingi ne tik toliau tobulinant numatomojo vertinimo metodą, bet ir sparčiai plėtojamai postkomunistinių studijų sričiai ir siekiant darnaus užstatytos aplinkos vystymosi. Built heritage began to be seen not only as a real estate property and an object of cultural value but also as a multifaceted and multidimensional cultural good in the second half of the 20th century. It has increasingly attracted the interests of economists, who attempted to measure not only its economic impact, but also the total economic value. The spectrum of the categories of the economic value of the built heritage and the valuation methods applied has expanded in the course of time. Currently it encompasses market and nonmarket economic values and numerous valuation techniques based on the stated and revealed data, including the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM). The number of contingent valuation (CV) studies aimed at valuing the non-market benefits of the built heritage in developed and developing countries is growing. However, the post-communist transition countries are quite an exception. The applications of the CVM in the developing countries have demonstrated that the sociocultural context must be taken into account and the special measures must be applied in order to get the reliable results. This sensitivity of the CVM to the sociocultural context encourages analyzing the peculiarities of its application in the post-communist transition countries. The main aim of the article is to determine the peculiarities of the social environment of the post-communist transition countries and their possible influence on the CV results. The findings of the research can be useful not only to the fields of CV survey design and benefit transfer, but also to the broad and rapidly developing field of the post-communist studies, for the better understanding the hidden values and potential of the built heritage properties, and the sustainable management of the built environment.

Disciplines of land management and urbanism devote considerable attention towards the public spaces, such as squares, parks, and streets, towards their use and influence on the urban structure. However, the spaces defined by the religious complexes in landscape and cityscape, their evolution caused by the specific functions and uses and the issues of contemporary uses and preservation do not always attain exceptional attention. This article presents the study of the genesis and development of the religious complexes and the interactions of the contemporary society with their material remains. In order to comprehend the aspects of development, functioning, re-use, preservation, and links with the surrounding environment of the religious complexes, the prehistoric and ancient religious complexes are analyzed. The analysis encompasses the religious complexes of three periods and cultures, i.e. primitive religious sites and their material signs, the monumental religious complexes of Mesopotamia and ancient Egypt, and the public-religious complexes of the classical world. Visgi sakralinių kompleksų kraštovaizdyje ir miestovaizdyje formuojamos erdvės, jų specifinių paskirčių veikiama evoliucija ir šiandieninės panaudos bei apsaugos klausimai ne visada sulaukia išskirtinio dėmesio. Šiame straipsnyje pristatomos sakralinių kompleksų vystymosi ištakos ir šiandieninės visuomenės santykis su jų medžiaginiu palikimu. Siekiant suprasti sakralinių kompleksų raidos, funkcionavimo, pritaikymo, saugojimo, plėtros, santykio su aplinka aspektus analizuojami priešistoriniai ir senovės pasaulio sakraliniai kompleksai. Analizė apima trijų laikotarpių ir kultūrų sakralinius kompleksus bei jų užuomazgas: pirmykštes sakralias vietas ir jų įprasminimą, Mesopotamijos ir Senovės Egipto monumentaliuosius religinius kompleksus ir klasikinio pasaulio– Senovės Graikijos– visuomeninius sakralinius centrus. Daugelio Lietuvos miestų ir kitų urbanizuotų vietovių centrinės dalys turi gilias istorines šaknis, kartais siekiančias viduramžius ir Lietuvos valstybės formavimosi pradžią. The trends of postmodernist architecture targeted at the limitations of modernism propose the multilingual contextual architecture based on interpretations of the past and traditions. This encourages analysing the possibilities to design in the postmodernist style in the historic urban environment. Istorinių dvarų sodybų želdynų – kraštovaizdžio architektūros kūrinių, kurių pagrindą sudaro nuolat kintantys gamtiniai elementai, ir kultūriniu požiūriu vertingų ir visuomenei reikšmingų paveldo objektų – tvarkymas reikalauja ypatingos atsakomybės. Historic gardens of manor residencies are the works of landscape architecture created using mainly instable vegetal materials, at the same time being the subjects of historic preservation and the increasing interest of society. These properties of historic gardens raise issues of considerable precaution and responsibility in their management and restoration. Istoriniai želdynai ar istoriniai apželdinimo elementai dažnai yra neatskiriama dvarų sodybų dalis. Šiandieninius buvusių dvarų sodybų apsaugos sunkumus lemia ne tik netinkamas naudojimas ir tvarkymas, nepriežiūra ir nuosavybės problemos, bet ir spartėjanti urbanizacija. Dėl miestų plėtros vis daugiau gamtiniame ir kaimo kraštovaizdyje susiformavusių dvarų sodybų patenka į joms nebūdingą urbanizuotą aplinką. Šios paveldosaugos problemos skatina ieškoti dvarų sodybų kultūrinę reikšmę atitinkančių ir savitumą išryškinančių panaudos ir socialinio atgaivinimo būdų. Istoriniai želdynai ar istoriniai apželdinimo elementai dažnai yra neatskiriama dvarų sodybų dalis. Šiandieninius buvusių dvarų sodybų apsaugos sunkumus lemia ne tik netinkamas naudojimas ir tvarkymas, nepriežiūra ir nuosavybės problemos, bet ir spartėjanti urbanizacija. Dėl miestų plėtros vis daugiau gamtiniame ir kaimo kraštovaizdyje susiformavusių dvarų sodybų patenka į joms nebūdingą urbanizuotą aplinką. Šios paveldosaugos problemos skatina ieškoti dvarų sodybų kultūrinę reikšmę atitinkančių ir savitumą išryškinančių panaudos ir socialinio atgaivinimo būdų. Galima daryti prielaidą, kad viena tokių atgaivinimo galimybių galėtų būti visuomenės poreikiams pritaikytų botanikos parkų kūrimas dvarų sodybų teritorijose. Siekiant patikrinti šią prielaidą, straipsnyje formuluojama botanikos parko samprata, pateikiama botanikos parko kūrimo koncepcija, pagrindinį dėmesį skiriant tokio parko kūrimui istorinio ansamblio pagrindu, ir botanikos parko kūrimo galimybes dvaro sodybos teritorijoje iliustruojantis eksperimentinis projektas. Current problems of preservation of the manor residences are determined not only by the inappropriate use and management, abandonment and unresolved ownership issues, but also by the rapid and uncontrolled urban expansion. More and more manor residences that were formed in the natural or rural landscapes are surrounded by urbanized territories. Such environment is completely alien for these heritage objects. These preservation problems urge to search for the ways to preserve the Lithuanian manor residences and to recreate their social viability. One possible way to such rehabilitation can be the creation of the public botanical parks in the territories of the manor residences. In order to test this presumption the notion of the botanical park, the concept of its development with the main emphasis on its creation in the territories of the existing ensembles, and the experimental project illustrating this possibility are presented in the article.

Influence of globalization on cities and urbanistic possibilities of its optimization in Kaunas city center Globalization, prevailing trend of development of contemporary societies, inevitably influences visual and social aspects of cities. Changes of cities influenced by globalization are usually associated with increasing uniformity of residential environment, decline of public spaces, fragmentation and commercialization of urban environment. Decline of traditional territorial communities, suburbanization, gentrification, and stratification are also observed in urban societies. These processes not only influence quality of life in urban territories, but also their visual characteristics. Changes of urban environment and societies influenced by globalizing processes strongly affect city’s historic environment. Striving towards sustainable development of cities it is necessary to analyze the impacts of globalization on urban environment, historic centers and districts and to search for possibilities to use its social and economic benefits and to avoid its negative influence on city’s identity and society. The influence of globalizing processes on cities, their historic environment and societies is discussed in the paper and the proposed model for optimization of the influence of globalization on historic environment with urban design means is presented. Globalizuojančių veiksnių paskatinti miestų pokyčiai dažniausiai susiję su gyvenamosios aplinkos vienodėjimu, erdvių fragmentacija ir komercializacija. Miestų visuomenėse pastebimi tradicinių teritorinių bendruomenių nykimo, suburbanizacijos, gentrifikacijos ir išsisluoksniavimo procesai, turintys įtakos ne tik gyvenimo kokybei miestuose, bet ir jų vaizdui. Šie miestų ir visuomenių pokyčiai ryškiausiai pasireiškia per šimtmečius susiformavusiose istorinėse miestų dalyse. Siekiant darnaus miestų vystymosi, svarbu analizuoti globalizuojančių veiksnių įtaką miestams ir jų istorinėms dalims, ieškoti galimybių pasinaudoti šių veiksnių teikiama socialine-ekonomine nauda ir išvengti neigiamo jų poveikio miestų savitumui ir visuomenėms. Influence of immovable cultural heritage on sustainable development of rural settlements Rural areas cover the largest part of the territory of Lithuania as well as that of the whole Europe. Rural settlements are also the most abundant category in the settlement system of the country. Therefore, their social, economic, and cultural viability- as well as ecologic sustainability playan important role striving towards the goals of sustainable development. During the last years projects promoting various aspects of sustainability are implemented not only in large cities and towns, but also in smaller municipalities, nevertheless many rural settlements still are not influenced by these trends. The tendency of decrease of the population of the country, emigration, migration of young and qualified persons to larger cities and towns, poverty and unemployment cause the threat to the most fragile elements of the rural settlement system, such as steadings, manor residencies and ethnographic village settlements. In order to stop these processes it is necessary to search for means to sustain the social and economic viability of rural settlements. During the last decade significant role of cultural heritage in implementing strategies of sustainable development was universally recognized. It is acknowledged that sustainable preservation, maintenance, and use of cultural heritage, especially immovable, positively influence the social, economic, cultural and even environmental dimensions of sustainable development. Sustainable development opportunities provided by immovable cultural heritage are essential for small rural settlements which are not distinguished by important natural resources or favorable location. Santrauka.Didžiąją Lietuvos, kaip ir visos Europos, teritorijos dalį sudaro kaimo vietovės, o didžiąją dalį gyvenamųjų vietovių –kaimo gyvenamosios vietovės, taigi jų socialinis, eko nominis ir kultūrinis gyvybingumas bei eko loginis tvarumas atlieka lemiamąvaidmenį siekiant šalies darnaus vystymosi tikslų. Pastaraisiais metais darnų vystymąsi skatinantys projektai jau įgyvendinami netik didžiuosiuose Lietuvos miestuose, bet ir mažesnėse savivaldybėse, tačiau daugelio kaimo gyvenamųjų vietovių šis procesas kolkas nepaliečia. Bendro šalies gyventojų skaičiaus mažėjimo tendencija, emigracija, jaunų ir kvalifikuo tų žmonių migracija į didžiuosiusšalies miestus, skurdas ir nedarbo grėsmė kelia sunykimo grėsmę patiems jautriausiems ir kultūriniu požiūriu vertingiausiemsšalies kaimo gyvenamųjų vietovių sistemos elementams, tokiems kaip vienkieminės sodybos, buvusių dvarų ir palivarkų sodybosar etnografinės kaimų gyvenvietės. Siekiant sustabdyti šiuos neigiamus socialinius, eko nominius bei kultūriniu procesus, būtinaieškoti būdų, kaip užtikrinti kaimo gyvenamųjų vietovių socialinį bei eko nominį gyvybingumą. Pastaraisiais metais pasaulyje visaiškiau suvokiamas kultūros paveldo vaidmuo darnaus vystymosi kontekste. Visuotinai pripažįstama, jog kultūros paveldo, ypačnekilnojamojo, apsauga, priežiūra bei naudojimas turi teigiamos įtakos darniam vystymuisi socialinėje, eko nominėje, kultūrinėje irkt. dimensijose. Nekilnojamojo kultūros paveldo teikiamos darnaus vystymosi galimybės itin reikšmingos nedidelėms, išskirtiniųgamtinių išteklių neturinčioms bei patogia geografine padėtimi nepasižyminčioms kaimo gyvenamosioms vietovėms. Jų socialinisir eko nominis gyvybingumas kultūros paveldui išsaugoti yra toks pats svarbus, kaip ir kultūros paveldas socialinio ir eko nominiošių gyvenamųjų vietovių gyvybingumo palaikymu.
