15. Formation of colloidal threads in geometrically varying flow-focusing channels

Abstract

When two miscible fluids are brought into contact with each other, the concentration gradients induce stresses. These are referred to as Korteweg stresses and are analogous to interfacial tension between two immiscible fluids, thereby acting as an effective interfacial tension (EIT) in inhomogeneous miscible systems. EIT governs the formation of a viscous thread in flow-focusing of two miscible fluids. To further investigate its significance, we have studied thread formation of a colloidal dispersion focused by its own solvent. Experiments are combined with three-dimensional numerical models to systematically expand previous knowledge utilising different flow-focusing channel setups. In the reference setup, the sheath flows impinge the core flow orthogonally while in four other channel setups, the sheath flows impinge the core flow at an oblique angle that is both positive and negative with respect to the reference sheath direction. As an initial estimate of the EIT, we fit the experimentally determined thread shape in the reference setup to a master curve that depends on EIT through an effective capillary number. By numerically reproducing these experimental results, it is concluded that the estimated EIT is within 25% of the optimal EIT value that can be deduced by iteratively fitting the numerical results to the experimental measurements. Regardless of channel setups, further numerical calculations performed using the optimal EIT evaluated from the reference setup show good agreement with the experimental findings in terms of thread shapes, wetted region morphologies, and velocity flow fields. The one-to-one comparison of numerical and experimental findings unveil the crucial role of EIT on the thread detachment from the top and bottom walls of the channel, bringing useful insights to understand the physical phenomenons involved in miscible systems with a high-viscosity contrast., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures

19. Effective interfacial tension in flow-focusing of colloidal dispersions: 3D numerical simulations and experiments

Abstract

An interface between two miscible fluids is transient, existing as a non-equilibrium state before complete molecular mixing is reached. However, during the existence of such an interface, which typically be at short timescales, composition gradients at the boundary between the two liquids cause stresses effectively mimicking an interfacial tension. Here, we combine numerical modelling and experiments to study the influence of an effective interfacial tension between a colloidal fibre dispersion and its own solvent on the flow in a microfluidic system. In a flow-focusing channel, the dispersion is injected as core flow that is hydrodynamically focused by its solvent as sheath flows. This leads to the formation of a long fluid thread, which is characterised in 3D using Optical Coherence Tomography and simulated using a volume of fluid method. The simulated flow and thread geometries very closely reproduce the experimental results in terms of thread topology and velocity flow fields. By varying the effective interfacial tension numerically, we show that it clearly influences threading dynamics and that it can be described by an effective capillary number. Abstract

Healthcare in general refers to services provided for preservation or enhancement of health through anticipation, finding, treatment, recovery, or healing of disease, illness, injury, or any physical and mental impairment in humans. Quality of Services in Healthcare Systems may be characterised broadly through parameters such as accuracy of data, speed of decision-making, timely treatment, security of data, real-time monitoring and controlling of the health systems, failure handling and quality of life. In this research work, an attempt is made to achieve the Quality of Services in Healthcare through IoT and Fog Computing, considering optimization of one or more of these parameters. An integrated hardware system with software programs is developed for EHS safety using microcontroller. The Processing Packages are designed to communicate through the Internet of Things (IoT) based on the Accident Reduction Model (ARM) and Augmented Data Recognition (ADR) system.When ECG signals are sensed through IoT and sent to the cloud for the analysis purpose, delays are caused by the time results reach the medical staff. This delay in decision making is due to the transmission delay and processing delays. To overcome these issues, Fog Computing can be used.

Abstract

In the era of modern medical imaging communal, huge volume of medical image data are being acquired and need to be transmitted and archived which necessitate the development of efficient image compression techniques on both 2D and 3D images. The compression of medical images is an essential process to support remote healthcare services. The medical diagnostics through these services require more accurate information from an image. As the property of inverse proportionality between the compression rate and quality of the image takes place in any kind of compression method, there is a need to sacrifice any one of those credentials (Quality or Compression Rate). With this context, Region of Interest (ROI) codecs are emerging and reduces this proportionality that yields more compression rate without compromising the quality. In this paper, presents an ROI based near lossless image compression method that incorporates the Set Partitioning in Hierarchical Trees (SPIHT) and Vector Quantization coding for medical images.

Abstract

Introduction: Postoperative pain is one of the common causes of increased postoperative morbidity and delayed recovery. Pain causes adverse effects such as hypertension, tachycardia, myocardial ischaemia, decreased alveolar ventilation, poor wound healing, and postoperative morbidity. Vitamin C and N-acetylcysteine (NAC), which is a novel co-analgesic, are being studied to reduce postoperative pain and opioid consumption. Aim: To study the effect of intravenous Vitamin C and NAC on postoperative surgical pain and opioid consumption after laparoscopic gynaecologic oncosurgeries. Materials and Methods: The present study was a randomised controlled study conducted at the Department of Anaesthesiology, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India on 300 patients of American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) physical status 1 and 2 scheduled for laparoscopic Gynaeconcology surgery after obtaining written informed consent. All the selected patients were randomly allocated into three groups. Group P was the control group in Group N patients received intravenous injections of NAC (50 mg/kg) and vitamin C infusion (50 mg/kg) in Group C. Patients were explained about the visual analogue pain scale preoperatively. In the postoperative period, VAS scores were recorded and noted along with the rescue analgesics received and side-effects. Results: Haemodynamic variables were comparable among all three groups. The number of patients who had VAS scores of more than 4 was lower in group C (Vitamin C) at various time intervals when compared to the NAC and placebo groups. It was also statistically significant at 45 minutes, 60 minutes, 90 minutes, 150 minutes, 180 minutes, 300 minutes, and 10 hours (p-value=0.014, <0.001, <0.001, <0.001, 0.003, 0.005, 0.006, respectively). Postoperative opioid consumption was significantly reduced in group C (Vitamin C) compared to the other two groups (p-value <0.001). Conclusion: Intraoperative Vitamin C usage reduced postoperative pain and fentanyl consumption in the postoperative period, and NAC can be used as a part of multimodal analgesia.
