Abstract

It has been proposed that the nervous system has the capacity to generate a wide variety of movements because it reuses some invariant code. Previous work has identified that dynamics of neural population activity are similar during different movements, where dynamics refer to how the instantaneous spatial pattern of population activity changes in time. Here, we test whether invariant dynamics of neural populations are actually used to issue the commands that direct movement. Using a brain-machine interface (BMI) that transforms rhesus macaques motor-cortex activity into commands for a neuroprosthetic cursor, we discovered that the same command is issued with different neural-activity patterns in different movements. However, these different patterns were predictable, as we found that the transitions between activity patterns are governed by the same dynamics across movements. These invariant dynamics are low dimensional, and critically, they align with the BMI, so that they predict the specific component of neural activity that actually issues the next command. We introduce a model of optimal feedback control (OFC) that shows that invariant dynamics can help transform movement feedback into commands, reducing the input that the neural population needs to control movement. Altogether our results demonstrate that invariant dynamics drive commands to control a variety of movements and show how feedback can be integrated with invariant dynamics to issue generalizable commands.

Abstract

A new spectrometer for the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) is being built jointly by the NRAO and the CASPER, University of California, Berkeley. The spectrometer uses 8 bit ADCs and will be capable of processing up to 1.25 GHz bandwidth from 8 dual polarized beams. This mode will be used to process data from focal plane arrays. The spectrometer supports observing mode with 8 tunable digital sub-bands within the 1.25 GHz bandwidth. The spectrometer can also be configured to process a bandwidth of up to 10 GHz with 64 tunable sub-bands from a dual polarized beam. 26. Design of control algorithms for redundant neuroprosthetic brain-machine interfaces

Abstract

Dexterous control of upper arm movements is integral to activities of daily living. This important ability may be lost due to neurological injury or disease, yet brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) or neuroprosthetics may offer the ability to restore motor function by bypassing damaged neural circuitry. Though tremendous progress has been made in BMI performance and robustness, additional gains are needed to improve the clinical utility of BMI systems. Of particular importance is the need to scale BMI performance beyond the simple 2-D reaching paradigm typically studied and extend to the multi-degree-of-freedom (multi-DOF) case. We explored methods and design considerations for redundant multi-DOF BMIs and examine the neuroprosthetic control mechanisms engaged by subjects.In this work, healthy non-human primate subjects controlled a variety of virtual and physical actuators using neural signals recorded from electrode arrays implanted in the motor cortex. We analyzed 2-D natural arm movements and developed a fast method to extract sparse components of hand kinematics during point-to-point reaching. We then analyzed neuroprosthetic control of a computer cursor in which neural decoding is performed using a Kalman filter (KF). We discovered several links between KF parameters and control performance of the overall BMI system, including the ability to manipulate the speed-accuracy tradeoff of neural cursors. Building from hypotheses of model based control in natural motor control, we examine BMI cursor control for evidence of model-based and feedforward control. We then proceeded to develop an architecture for BMI control of a redundant actuator. Subjects learned BMI control of a redundant four-link virtual “arm” which was confined to move in a two-dimensional plane. When controlling this redundant arm, performance improved when subjects made use of the redundant control dimensions. Furthermore, redundant control signals were critical to escaping manipulator singularities, similar to how redundant control signals are used in robotic systems. These results suggest the utility of using neural signals in conjunction with standard robotic path planning methods to control endpoint-redundant aspects of a robotic prosthesis. Altogether, the work of this dissertation contributes progress toward BMI control of highly redundant prosthetic systems for clinical use.

Abstract

Identity theft is a common and hazardous sort of cybercrime. The purpose of this attack is to obtain identities used by individuals and businesses to conduct transactions. Fraudulent hijacking websites are fake websites that contain various tricks between their content and web-based information. If a user opens a false web page and enters a secure username and password, the user information is retrieved by an attacker who can be used for malicious purposes. Criminal websites to steal sensitive information look very similar in appearance to their official websites in order to attract a large number of internet users. Feedforward neural networks frequently learn at a slower rate than is required. This research offers a new algorithm for hidden singlelayer neural networks termed a comprehensive learning machine algorithm (ELM), which randomly chooses hidden nodes and does not overspend data. 40. Low-rank Representation of Neural Activity and Detection of Submovements

Abstract

In this study, Robust Principal Component Analysis (RPCA) is applied to neural spike datasets to extract neural signatures that signify the onset of submovements, a type of motor primitive. Given neural activity recorded from rhesus macaques during a set of reaches between targets in a horizontal plane, we aim to identify common event-related neural features and validate submovement-based motor primitives inferred from the hand velocity profiles. Such features represent common dynamic patterns across many experimental trials and may be used as a signature to detect discrete events such as submovement onset. We present RPCA, a method well suited for extracting data matrices' low-rank component and this method allows (1) removal of task-irrelevant signal from data, (2) identification of task-related dynamic patterns, and (3) detection of submovements. We also explored using the Random Projection (RP) technique and applying RP to data prior to applying RPCA improved the submovement prediction performance by de-sparsifying neural data while preserving certain statistical characteristics of aggregate neural activity.
