Abstract

Lifetimes have been measured of the low- and intermediate-spins states in 188Pt nucleus using the recoil distance Doppler shift technique at IUAC, Delhi. The nuclear states of interest were populated via 174Yb(18O,4n)188Pt reaction at a beam energy of 79 MeV provided by 15 UD Pelletron accelerator. The extracted B(E2) values show an increase up to 4+ state and then a near constant behavior with spin along yrast band, indicating change of the nuclear shape in 188Pt at low spins. The average absolute β2 = 0:20(3) obtained from measured B(E2) values matches well the values predicted by CHFB and IBM calculations for oblate (β2 ~ -0:19) and prolate (β2 ~ 0:22) shapes. Abstract

Five superdeformed ~SD! bands have been observed in 149Tb, using the Gammasphere spectrometer. The measurement was performed with a backed target to obtain lifetime information from a Doppler-shift attenuation method analysis. It is proposed that the yrast SD band corresponds to the 148Gd(yrast)^p63 intruder configuration. The first excited band ~band 2! is found to be identical to the 150Tb yrast SD band. Band 3 is proposed to correspond to the p@301#1/2(a521/2)!@651#3/2(a521/2) proton-hole excitation coupled to the p64n 71(n@651#1/2)21 intruder configuration. Bands 4 and 5, the weakest SD bands seen in the present work, show similarities with band 3 and are most likely associated with a similar intruder configuration.

Abstract

The Os nuclei lie in the beginning of the transitional region between the well deformed rare earth and spherical lead isotopes. The nuclei in this region are believed to be soft to changes in gamma deformation due to the softness of nuclear potential which may result in the shape coexistence. The neutron Fermi levels in Os nuclei from A = 170 to A = 186 lie in the middle of i13/2 orbital so that their shape in the ground state tends to take an appreciable prolate deformation. Hence collective bands with the well defined moment of inertia occur and the effect of different proton orbitals is observed as a modulation of the prolate structure. The anomalies in the yrast sequence, an effect attributed to change in moment of inertia of the ground state rotational band and the band crossing phenomena, are very important and vary strongly with neutron number in case of Os nuclei. The nuclear structure of 178Os nucleus has been studied using the reaction 165Ho (20Ne, p6n) 178Os. Indian National Gamma Array (INGA) consisting of six Clover detectors with anti Compton shields was used for the detection of resulting gamma rays. The Direction Correlation of γ-rays de-exciting Oriented states (DCO) ratio and polarization of gamma rays were measured to assign spin, parity and multipolarity of transitions. Twenty one new transitions belonging to the 178Os nucleus have been identified. The sudden and rather strong gain in aligned angular momentum is observed in the yrast band of 178Os. A new aligned rotational band similar to 180Os is also discovered in this nucleus. This band exhibits a very complex decay pattern with a single linking transition of 1778 keV to the ground state band. The tri-axial shape co-existence is also observed in this nucleus at higher excitation. The experimental results are compared with the Microscopic Hartree-Fock model calculations. Abstract

The pre- and post-scission neutron multiplicities are measured for 19F+209Bi reaction at Elab = 100, 104, 108, 112 and 116 MeV. The measured value of pre-scission neutron multiplicity was found to be increasing with the excitation energy. The comparison of experimental values with the statistical model calculations shows that the measured values are much larger than the model predictions. This difference in excess yield over the model predictions amounts to the survival time of 80±5×10-21 s for the 228U compound nucleus before it undergoes fission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The nuclear structure of 122Cs has been studied using 107Ag (19F,p3n)122Cs fusion reaction at beam energy of 93 MeV. Fifteen new transitions belonging to 122Cs have been observed extending the level scheme up to Ex ∼ 7 MeV and J ∼28h. We have performed the linear polarization measurements using the Clover detectors to assign the unknown spins and parities of a few bands. We have also observed a few linking transitions between negative and positive parity bands indicating the octupole collectivity in this nucleus. The band structure of this nucleus is discussed in the frame work of the cranked Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov model and the microscopic Projected Hartree- Fock model. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Particle induced X-ray emission (PIXE) technique developed at Variable Energy Cyclotron, Panjab University Chandigarh has been used for the detection of trace elements in the aerosol samples collected from relatively clean and industrially polluted city in northern India. Aerosol samples were collected from Jammu City of Jammu and Kashmir State, which is supposed to have a clean environment and from Mandi-Gobindgarh, one of the most polluted steel city of Punjab. The results from the analysis of these samples show some basic differences in the trace element profile of the two cities. The results further suggest a long term aerosol sample analysis to segregate anthropogenic and natural sources of air pollution. The mean concentration levels of different trace elements in PM10 (Particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 10 μm) from these two cities of northern India are compared with some of the prominent cities of India.
