Predicting the quantity of soil organic carbon (SOC) requires understanding how different factors control the amount of SOC. Land use has a major influence on the function of the soil as a carbon sink, as shown by substantial organic carbon (OC) losses from the soil upon deforestation. However, predicting the degree to which land use change affects the OC content in soils and the depth down to which this occurs requires context-specific information related to, for example, climate, geochemistry, and land use history. In this study, 266 samples from forests and agricultural fields were collected from 94 soil profiles down to 300 cm depth in a subtropical region (Arvorezinha, southern Brazil) to study the impact of land use on the amount of stabilized OC along the soil profile. We found that the stabilized OC content was not affected by land use below a depth of 90 cm. Along the soil profile, the amount of stabilized OC was predominantly controlled by land use and depth in addition to the silt and clay content and aluminium ion concentrations. Below 100 cm , none of the soil profiles reached a concentration of stabilized OC above 50 % of the stabilized OC saturation point (i.e. the maximum OC concentration that can physically be stabilized in these soils). Based on these results, we argue that it is unlikely that deeper soil layers can serve as an OC sink over a timescale relevant to global climate change due to the limited OC input in these deeper layers. Furthermore, we found that the soil weathering degree was not a relevant control on the amount of stabilized OC in our profiles because of the high weathering degree of the studied soils. It is therefore suggested that, while the soil weathering degree might be an effective controlling factor of OC stabilization over a large spatial scale, it is not an informative measure for this process at regional and local scales (with similar climate, bedrock, and weathering history) in highly weathered soils. Cosmogenic nuclide analysis of river sediment provides insight into catchment‐wide erosion rates and dynamics. Here, we investigate spatial patterns and controls on 10Be‐inferred erosion rates in Madagascar, a moderately seismically active microcontinent surrounded by passive margins with locally steep topography and a climate that varies from humid tropical to semiarid. We use a compiled dataset of 99 detrital 10Be measurements, 63 of which are new, covering more than 30% of the country and a wide range of topographic, bioclimatic and geologic characteristics. Overall, 10Be erosion rates are low (2.4–51.1 mm kyr−1), with clear differences between regions. The lowest rates are measured on the central highlands (∼ 8 mm kyr−1), in the Alaotra–Ankay graben (∼ 11 mm kyr−1) and in the large north‐central catchments (∼ 11 mm kyr−1). Higher rates are found on the steep eastern escarpment (∼ 20 mm kyr−1), in the northwest (∼ 31 mm kyr−1) and in the southwest (∼ 29 mm kyr−1). A stepwise linear regression model identified elevation as the main factor associated with variations in 10Be erosion rates (lower rates for higher catchments). Random within‐between statistical models (REWB), on the other hand, indicated that the differences between different regions can be explained by differences in river concavity, seismic events and gully (lavaka) densities, whereas additional variation within regions is only linked to seismicity. We find no correlation between catchment or river steepness and 10Be‐inferred erosion rates. Our results indicate that in Madagascar, long‐term erosion rates are overall low and that simple topography‐based models do not explain variations in rates of landscape change inferred from 10Be concentrations in river sediment. We demonstrate that identifying different regions aids in interpreting spatial patterns of erosion rates and that REWB models can be a powerful tool in deciphering environmental controls on 10Be erosion rates. Madagascar is known for its high erosion rates in the central highlands, yet the role of human disturbance versus natural processes is not well understood and is a topic of ongoing debate. At present the necessary quantitative data to couple vegetation dynamics and sediment fluxes over time in Madagascar is scarce. This study aims to provide more insight in vegetation changes and sediment transfers over the last millennia in the Lake Alaotra region, and specifically on the role of human disturbances and natural processes. Our vegetation reconstruction is based on pollen records from two lake sediment cores, covering the last 2600 years. Sediment accumulation rates were calculated from cores obtained from the floodplains, from wetlands surrounding the lake, and from Lake Alaotra itself. Our data show an early opening in the landscape, between 2050 and 1700 cal a BP, with a transition from a wooded grassland or woodland/grassland mosaic towards open grassland and an increase in charcoal accumulation rates. (Indirect) human impact is suggested as the main driver for these vegetation changes. Floodplain and wetland sediment accumulation rates only increase in the last 1000 years and peak in the last 400 years. This increased accumulation can mainly be linked to the increased anthropogenic pressure (grazing and farming activities) that triggered increased lavaka (gullies) activity. No changes in accumulation rate were observed in Lake Alaotra, indicating that most sediments are buffered in the floodplains and wetlands. Overall, our pollen and charcoal data suggest an indirect effect of human disturbance on vegetation shifts whilst strong evidence was found for a direct effect of human disturbance on sediment accumulation through intensified use of the grasslands.
