3. PSXVII-9 Effects of β-carotene and vitamins in grazing Nellore primiparous cows submitted to fixed timed artificial insemination (FTAI)

Abstract

The aim was to evaluate the effects of feeding β-carotene and vitamins on reproduction performance of grazing primiparous beef cows. The experiment was conducted in a commercial farm located in Sidrolandia, MS, Brazil during the spring/summer reproduction season. A total of 204 suckled Nellore primiparous cows (Bos indicus) were used. The animals were maintained in 2 paddocks of Brachiaria brizantha with ad libitum access to water. The cows were homogeneously assigned into groups according the calving date (29.1 ± 5.0 days postpartum), BCS (3.77 ± 0.4) and β-carotene blood concentration (3.96 ± 0.7) to receive treatments for 90 days (30 before and 60 after IA): Control (mineral supplement, n=102) and treated (mineral supplement with 500 mg β-carotene, 70.000 IU vitamin A, 10.000 IU vitamin D(3), 500 mg vitamin E and 20 mg biotin/cow/day; n=102). The supplements were daily offered in collective feeders. The β-carotene, vitamins and minerals were provided by DSM Produtos Nutricionais Brasil S.A. Cows were rotated through the paddocks every 15 days to avoid effects of pasture availability and quality. Cows were synchronized at 49 days postpartum using an estradiol/progesterone based FTAI protocol: D0 – insertion of progesterone device and treatment of 2.0 mg estradiol benzoate IM; D9 – treatment of 0.530 PFG(2α) analogue, 300 IU of eCG, 1.0 mg estradiol cypionate and progesterone device withdrawal; D11 - FTAI. Data were analyzed using the PROC MIXED procedure of SAS. The conception rate at FTAI tended to be greater (P=0.07) in primiparous cows supplemented with β-carotene and vitamins (68.6%; 70/102) compared to control group (58.8%; 60/102). In conclusion, feeding grazing primiparous Nellore cows with a combination of β-carotene and vitamin A, D, E and biotin can increase conception rate at FTAI by 16.6%.

Abstract

Purpose Systemic and local immune environments in human biliary atresia (BA) were analyzed. Methods Plasma concentrations of 19 inflammatory components in 16 preoperative BA patients (median age, 51 days), 13 normal controls (NCs) (44 days), and 15 cholestatic controls (CC) (23 days) were measured using flow cytometry, and compared according to post-Kasai outcomes in BA patients. Hepatic mRNA levels of representative helper T (Th) cell cytokines and forkhead box protein 3 (FoxP3) quantified by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction were compared between BA and non-BA. Results No significant differences were observed between BA and control in serum Th1, Th2, or macrophage markers, while soluble cellular adhesion molecule (CAM) levels were significantly higher in BA (p Conclusions A skewed bias toward specific Th-oriented immunity was not demonstrated in either the systemic or local environment in the early stage of human BA, with patient prognoses not necessarily revealed by preoperative plasma inflammatory component levels. CAM and regulatory T cell roles and functions warrant further investigation.

36. Accumulation of 210Po by benthic marine algae

Abstract

The accumulation of polonium 210Po by various species of benthic marine seaweeds collected from 4 different points on the coast of Rio de Janeiro, RJ (Brasil), showed variations by species and algal groups. The highest value found was in red alga, Plocamium brasiliens is followed by other organisms of the same group. In the group of the brown alga, the specie Sargassum stenophylum was outstanding. The Chlorophyta presented the lowest content of 210Po. The algae collected in open sea, revealed greater concentration factors of 210Po than the same species living in bays. The siliceous residue remaining after mineralization of the algae didn't interfere with the detection of polonium.

37. Pathogenicity of avian reoviruses: examination of six isolates and a vaccine strain

Abstract

Six avian reovirus isolates and a vaccine reovirus strain were compared for invasiveness, virulence, and pathological characteristics upon infection of day-old specific-pathogen-free chicks by the footpad, subcutaneous, and oral routes of inoculation. No significant differences were noted regarding the ability of individual isolates to infect target tissues. However, virulence (measured as the 50% lethal dose) among the isolates varied markedly from 2 x 10(5) to less than 10 PFU per chick for the most virulent isolate; between the parental wild-type virus and the derivative vaccine virus strain, a million-fold (10(6)) difference in virulence was demonstrated. All strains revealed, with considerable variation, arthrogenic potential.

38. Polymorphism of the migration of double-stranded RNA genome segments of avian reoviruses

Abstract

A number of field isolates of avian reovirus were characterized by analysis of the migration pattern of their genomic double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) segments upon polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Comparison of the various isolates has demonstrated (i) no relationship between serotype and migration of any individual dsRNA segment, (ii) marked polymorphism of migration patterns of all dsRNA segments among isolates of the same serotype as well as among different serotypes, (iii) no correlation between genotype and disease state, (iv) less marked variability in migration pattern from isolates within a restricted geographic locale compared to isolates from distant locales, (v) the presence of a single genotype in local outbreaks of disease, and (vi) the relative invariant migration of several dsRNA segments among the avian reoviruses, one of which (S1) may serve to distinguish the avian from the mammalian reoviruses.

41. Patterns and etiology of diarrhea in three clinical settings.

Abstract

Acute diarrhea of young children was studied from September 1978 to April 1981 to determine age and time patterns, clinical characteristics and microbial association in two pediatric practices and in a hospital population in southern Michigan. The practice population sizes were estimated so that rates of diarrhea could be determined. Care was sought for about 0.85 episodes per child in the first year of life and 0.4 episodes in the second year of life. Bacterial pathogens were rarely identified in the practices and were identified in only 5% of hospitalized patients. Rotavirus was identified in 16% of the episodes in children under two years of age in the practices. These rotavirus diarrheas occurred mainly in the winter and were clearly more severe than nonrotavirus diarrheas. The rotavirus-infected patients did not, however, have more frequent respiratory symptoms. Respiratory symptom frequency was related to practice setting and income but not etiology. In the fall, before the rotavirus seasonal peak, a peak of nonrotaviral, nonbacterial diarrhea was seen in the practices. The symptoms were mild and a corresponding peak was not seen in hospital patients. The total direct costs of diarrheal illness to society were estimated to be due more to hospitalization than to outpatient care.

Antibodies reacting with simian rotavirus SAII were detected by enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and Western blot assay (WBA) in sera from guinea pigs bred for experimental use at the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The proportion of antibody-positive animals and the antibody titres rose sharply in 1985, were maintained at a high levels in 1986 and declined in 1987. There were no obvious signs of disease coinciding with serological evidence of infection. Results of WBA suggest that the virus involved belongs to subgroup 1 of group A rotaviruses. Anticorpos reagindo com rotavírus símio SA11 foram demonstrados por ensaio imuno-enzimático (EIE) e por "Western blot assay" (WBA) em soros de cobaios mantidos para fins experimentais na Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. A proporção de animais soro-positivos e os níveis de anticorpos subiram rapidametne em 1985, mantiveram-se altos em 1986 e baixaram em 1987. Não foram observados sinais de doença coincidente com a elevação de anticorpos. Resultados de WBA sugerem que o rotavírus responsável pela resposta sorológica pertence ao subgrupo do grupo A.

Abstract

Given the social and territorial features described in feral cats, it is commonly assumed that life in multi-cat households is stressful for domestic cats and suggested that cats kept as single pets are likely to have better welfare. On the other hand, it has been hypothesized that under high densities cats can organize themselves socially thus preventing stress when spatial dispersion is unavailable. This study was aimed at comparing the general arousal underpinning emotional distress in single housed cats and in cats from multi-cat households (2 and 3-4 cats) on the basis of fecal glucocorticoid metabolites (GCM) measured via enzyme immunoassay (EIA). GCM did not significantly vary as a function of living style (single, double or group-housing); highly stressed individuals were equally likely in the three groups. Young cats in multi-cat households had lower GCM, and overall cats that tolerate (as opposed to dislike) petting by the owners tended to have higher GCM levels. Other environmental aspects within cat houses (e.g. relationship with humans, resource availability) may play a more important role in day to day feline arousal levels than the number of cats per se. c 2013 Elsevier Inc.
