Quantum mechanics introduces the possibility for particles to move in a direction opposite to their momentum -- a counter-intuitive and classically impossible phenomenon known as quantum backflow. The magnitude of this effect is relatively small, making its experimental observation, which has yet to be achieved, particularly challenging. Here, we investigate the influence of quantum statistics on the maximal backflow attainable for two identical particles confined to a ring. Notably, we demonstrate that the fermionic statistics significantly impedes quantum backflow compared to the bosonic statistics. The probability density of a quantum particle moving freely within a circular ring can exhibit local flow patterns inconsistent with its angular momentum, a phenomenon known as quantum backflow. In this study, we examine a quantum particle confined to a ring and prepared in a state composed of a fixed (yet arbitrary) number of lowest energy eigenstates with non-negative angular momentum. We investigate the time-dependent behavior of the probability current at a specified point along the ring's circumference. We establish precise lower and upper bounds for this probability current, thereby delineating the exact scope of the quantum backflow effect. We also present an analytical expression for a quantum state that yields a record-high backflow probability transfer, reaching over 95% of the theoretical bound. Furthermore, our investigation yields compelling numerical and analytical evidence supporting the conjecture that the current-versus-time function associated with states maximizing backflow probability transfer forms a fractal curve with a dimension of 7/4. Quantum backflow refers to the counterintuitive fact that the probability can flow in the direction opposite to the momentum of a quantum particle. Diffraction in time manifests itself as the appearance of probability-density fringes when a matter wave passes through an opaque screen with abrupt temporal variations of transmission properties. Here we analytically describe the phase-space structure of diffraction-in-time fringes for a class of smooth time gratings. More precisely, we obtain an analytic expression for the Husimi distribution representing the state of the system in the case of time gratings comprising a succession of Lorentzian-like slits. In its standard formulation, quantum backflow is a classically impossible phenomenon in which a free quantum particle in a positive-momentum state exhibits a negative probability current. Recently, Miller et al. [Quantum 5, 379 (2021)] have put forward a new, "experiment-friendly" formulation of quantum backflow that aims at extending the notion of quantum backflow to situations in which the particle's state may have both positive and negative momenta. Here, we investigate how the experiment-friendly formulation of quantum backflow compares to the standard one when applied to a free particle in a positive-momentum state. In its original formulation, quantum backflow (QB) is an interference effect that manifests itself as a negative probability transfer for free-particle states comprised of plane waves with only positive momenta. Quantum reentry (QR) is another interference effect in which a wave packet expanding from a spatial region of its initial confinement partially returns to the region in the absence of any external forces. Here we show that both QB and QR are special cases of a more general classically-forbidden probability flow for quantum states with certain position-momentum correlations. We report the existence of a new regime for domain wall motion in uniaxial and near-uniaxial ferromagnetic nanowires, characterised by applied magnetic fields sufficiently strong that one of the domains becomes unstable. There appears a new stable solution of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, describing a nonplanar domain wall moving with constant velocity and precessing with constant frequency. There is no known exact expression for the propagator of a non-relativistic particle colliding with a hard sphere. De Prunel\'e (2008 {\it J.~Phys.~A:~Math.~Theor.} {\bf 41} 255305) derived a partial wave expansion of the propagator and compared it against some known approximations, including the semiclassical Van Vleck-Gutzwiller (VG) propagator; the VG propagator was evaluated entirely numerically. We propose the suppression of dispersive spreading of wave packets governed by the free-space Schr\"odinger equation with a periodically pulsed nonlinear term. Using asymptotic analysis, we construct stroboscopically-dispersionless quantum states that are physically reminiscent of, but mathematically different from, the well-known one-soliton solutions of the nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with a constant (time-independent) nonlinearity. Our analytics are strongly supported by full numerical simulations. We propose a method -- a quantum time mirror (QTM) -- for simulating a partial time-reversal of the free-space motion of a nonrelativistic quantum wave packet. The method is based on a short-time spatially-homogeneous perturbation to the wave packet dynamics, achieved by adding a nonlinear time-dependent term to the underlying Schr\"odinger equation. Numerical calculations, supporting our analytical considerations, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed QTM for generating a time-reversed echo image of initially localized matter-wave packets in one and two spatial dimensions. We address the time evolution of two- and three-dimensional nonrelativistic Gaussian wave packets in the presence of a weak external potential of arbitrary functional form. The focus of our study is the phenomenon of rotation of a Gaussian wave packet around its center of mass, as quantified by mean angular momentum computed relative to the wave packet center. Using a semiclassical approximation of the eikonal type, we derive an explicit formula for a time-dependent change of mean angular momentum of a wave packet induced by its interaction with a weak external potential. As an example, we apply our analytical approach to the scenario of a two-dimensional quantum particle crossing a tilted ridge potential barrier. In particular, we demonstrate that the initial orientation of the particle wave packet determines the sense of its rotation, and report a good agreement between analytical and numerical results., Comment: Updated version. A ribbon is a surface swept out by a line segment turning as it moves along a central curve. For narrow magnetic ribbons, for which the length of the line segment is much less than the length of the curve, the anisotropy induced by the magnetostatic interaction is biaxial, with hard axis normal to the ribbon and easy axis along the central curve. The micromagnetic energy of a narrow ribbon reduces to that of a one-dimensional ferromagnetic wire, but with curvature, torsion and local anisotropy modified by the rate of turning. These general results are applied to two examples, namely a helicoid ribbon, for which the central curve is a straight line, and a M\"obius ribbon, for which the central curve is a circle about which the line segment executes a $180^\circ$ twist. In both examples, for large positive tangential anisotropy, the ground state magnetization lies tangent to the central curve. As the tangential anisotropy is decreased, the ground state magnetization undergoes a transition, acquiring an in-surface component perpendicular to the central curve. For the helicoid ribbon, the transition occurs at vanishing anisotropy, below which the ground state is uniformly perpendicular to the central curve. The transition for the M\"obius ribbon is more subtle; it occurs at a positive critical value of the anisotropy, below which the ground state is nonuniform. Both metaphysical and practical considerations related to time inversion have intrigued scientists for generations. Physicists have strived to devise and implement time-inversion protocols, in particular different forms of "time mirrors" for classical waves. Here we propose an instantaneous time mirror for quantum systems, i.e., a controlled time discontinuity generating wave function echoes with high fidelities. We report a quantitative, analytical and numerical, comparison between two models of the interaction of a non-relativistic quantum particle with a thin time-dependent absorbing barrier. The first model represents the barrier by a set of time-dependent discontinuous matching conditions, which are closely related to Kottler boundary conditions used in stationary wave optics as a mathematical basis for Kirchhoff diffraction theory. The second model mimics the absorbing barrier with an off-diagonal $\delta$-potential with a time-dependent amplitude. We present an analytic study of domain-wall statics and dynamics in ferromagnetic nanotubes with spin-orbit-induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Even at the level of statics, dramatic effects arise from the interplay of space curvature and DMI: the domains become chirally twisted leading to more compact domain walls. The dynamics of these chiral structures exhibits several interesting features. Under weak applied currents, they propagate without distortion. The dynamical response is further enriched by the application of an external magnetic field: the domain wall velocity becomes chirality-dependent and can be significantly increased by varying the DMI. These characteristics allow for enhanced control of domain wall motion in nanotubes with DMI, increasing their potential as information carriers in future logic and storage devices., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

A pulse of matter waves may dramatically change its shape when traversing an absorbing barrier with time-dependent transparency. Here we show that this effect can be utilized for controlled manipulation of spatially-localized quantum states. In particular, in the context of atom-optics experiments, we explicitly demonstrate how the proposed approach can be used to generate spatially shifted, split, squeezed and cooled atomic wave packets. We address the time decay of the Loschmidt echo, measuring sensitivity of quantum dynamics to small Hamiltonian perturbations, in one-dimensional integrable systems. Using semiclassical analysis, we show that the Loschmidt echo may exhibit a well-pronounced regime of exponential decay, alike the one typically observed in quantum systems whose dynamics is chaotic in the classical limit. We derive an explicit formula for the exponential decay rate in terms of the spectral properties of the unperturbed and perturbed Hamilton operators and the initial state. In particular, we show that the decay rate, unlike in the case of the chaotic dynamics, is directly proportional to the strength of the Hamiltonian perturbation. Finally, we compare our analytical predictions against the results of a numerical computation of the Loschmidt echo for a quantum particle moving inside a one-dimensional box with Dirichlet-Robin boundary conditions, and find the two in good agreement., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

We develop a systematic asymptotic description for domain wall motion in one-dimensional magnetic nanowires under the influence of small applied magnetic fields and currents and small material anisotropy. The magnetization dynamics, as governed by the Landau--Lifshitz--Gilbert equation, is investigated via a perturbation expansion. We compute leading-order behaviour, propagation velocities, and first-order corrections of both travelling waves and oscillatory solutions, and find bifurcations between these two types of solutions. In the recent years, mater-wave interferometry has attracted growing attention due to its unique suitability for high-precision measurements and study of fundamental aspects of quantum theory. Diffraction and interference of matter waves can be observed not only at a spatial aperture (such as a screen edge, slit, or grating), but also at a time-domain aperture (such as an absorbing barrier, or "shutter", that is being periodically switched on and off). The wave phenomenon of the latter type is commonly referred to as "diffraction in time". Here, we introduce a versatile, exactly solvable model of diffraction in time. It describes time-evolution of an arbitrary initial quantum state in the presence of a time-dependent absorbing barrier, governed by an arbitrary aperture function. Our results enable a quantitative description of diffraction and interference patterns in a large variety of setups, and may be used to devise new diffraction and interference experiments with atoms and molecules., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We consider the problem of quantum scattering of a localized wave packet by a weak Gaussian potential in two spatial dimensions. We show that, under certain conditions, this problem bears close analogy with that of focusing (or defocusing) of light rays by a thin optical lens: Quantum interference between straight paths yields the same lens equation as for refracted rays in classical optics.

We study the quantum Goos-H\"{a}nchen(GH) effect for wave-packet dynamics at a normal/superconductor (NS) interface. We find that the effect is amplified by a factor $(E_F/\Delta)$, with $E_F$ the Fermi energy and $\Delta$ the gap. Interestingly, the GH effect appears only as a time delay $\delta t$ without any lateral shift, and the corresponding delay length is about $(E_F/\Delta)\lambda_F$, with $\lambda_F$ the Fermi wavelength. This makes the NS interface "sticky" when $\Delta \ll E_F$, since typically GH effects are of wavelength order. This "sticky" behavior can be further enhanced by a resonance mode in NSNS interface. Finally, for a large $\Delta$, the resonance-mode effect makes a transition from Andreev to the specular electron reflection as the width of the sandwiched superconductor is reduced.

It has recently been established that quantum statistics can play a crucial role in quantum escape. Here we demonstrate that boundary conditions can be equally important - moreover, in certain cases, may lead to a complete suppression of the escape. In this article we review the past, present, and future of the Loschmidt Echo.

Under a magnetic field along its axis, domain wall motion in a uniaxial nanowire is much slower than in the fully anisotropic case, typically by several orders of magnitude (the square of the dimensionless Gilbert damping parameter). However, with the addition of a magnetic field transverse to the wire, this behaviour is dramatically reversed; up to a critical field strength, analogous to the Walker breakdown field, domain walls in a uniaxial wire propagate faster than in a fully anisotropic wire (without transverse field). Beyond this critical field strength, precessional motion sets in, and the mean velocity decreases. We address the phenomenon of diffraction of non-relativistic matter waves on openings in absorbing screens. To this end, we expand the full quantum propagator, connecting two points on the opposite sides of the screen, in terms of the free particle propagator and spatio-temporal properties of the opening. Our construction, based on the Huygens-Fresnel principle, describes the quantum phenomena of diffraction in space and diffraction in time, as well as the interplay between the two. We study the short-time stability of quantum dynamics in quasi-one-dimensional systems with respect to small localized perturbations of the potential. To this end, we address, analytically and numerically, the decay of the Loschmidt echo (LE) during times short compared to the Ehrenfest time. We find that the LE is generally a non-monotonous function of time and exhibits strongly pronounced minima and maxima at the instants of time when the corresponding classical particle traverses the perturbation region. We also show that, under general conditions, the envelope decay of the LE is well approximated by a Gaussian, and we derive explicit analytical formulas for the corresponding decay time. Finally, we demonstrate that the observed non-monotonicity of the LE decay is only pertinent to one-dimensional (and, more generally, quasi-one-dimensional systems), and that the short-time decay of the LE can be monotonous in higher number of dimensions., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures; added references, corrected typos

The flux-flux correlation function formalism is a standard and widely used approach for the computation of reaction rates. In this paper we introduce a method to compute the classical and quantum flux-flux correlation functions for anharmonic barriers essentially analytically through the use of the classical and quantum normal forms. In the quantum case we show that the quantum normal form reduces the computation of the flux-flux correlation function to that of an effective one dimensional anharmonic barrier. The example of the computation of the quantum flux-flux correlation function for a fourth order anharmonic barrier is worked out in detail, and we present an analytical expression for the quantum mechanical microcanonical flux-flux correlation function. We study fidelity decay in classically chaotic microwave billiards for a local, piston-like boundary perturbation. We experimentally verify a predicted non-monotonic cross-over from the Fermi Golden Rule to the escape-rate regime of the Loschmidt echo decay with increasing local boundary perturbation. In particular, we observe pronounced oscillations of the decay rate as a function of the piston position which quantitatively agree with corresponding theoretical results based on a refined semiclassical approach for local boundary perturbations., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures

Motivated by atom optics experiments, we investigate a new class of fidelity functions describing the reconstruction of quantum states by time-reversal operations as $M_{\mathrm{Da}}(t) = | <\psi | e^{i H_2 t / 2} e^{i H_1 t / 2} e^{-i H_2 t / 2} e^{-i H_1 t / 2} | \psi >|^2$. We show that the decay of $M_{\mathrm{Da}}$ is quartic in time at short times, and that it freezes well above the ergodic value at long times, when $H_2-H_1$ is not too large. We review recent results on quantum reactive scattering from a phase space perspective. The approach uses classical and quantum versions of normal form theory and the perspective of dynamical systems theory. Over the past ten years the classical normal form theory has provided a method for realizing the phase space structures that are responsible for determining reactions in high dimensional Hamiltonian systems. This has led to the understanding that a new (to reaction dynamics) type of phase space structure, a {\em normally hyperbolic invariant manifold} (or, NHIM) is the "anchor" on which the phase space structures governing reaction dynamics are built. The quantum normal form theory provides a method for quantizing these phase space structures through the use of the Weyl quantization procedure. We show that this approach provides a solution of the time-independent Schr\"odinger equation leading to a (local) S-matrix in a neighborhood of the saddle point governing the reaction. It follows easily that the quantization of the directional flux through the dividing surface with the properties noted above is a flux operator that can be expressed in a "closed form". Moreover, from the local S-matrix we easily obtain an expression for the cumulative reactio probability (CRP). Significantly, the expression for the CRP can be evaluated without the need to compute classical trajectories. The quantization of the NHIM is shown to lead to the activated complex, and the lifetimes of quantum states initialized on the NHIM correspond to the Gamov-Siegert resonances. We apply these results to the collinear nitrogen exchange reaction and a three degree-of-freedom system corresponding to an Eckart barrier coupled to two Morse oscillators., Comment: 59 pages, 13 figures

We address the dynamics of magnetic domain walls in ferromagnetic nanowires under the influence of external time-dependent magnetic fields. We report a new exact spatiotemporal solution of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation for the case of soft ferromagnetic wires and nanostructures with uniaxial anisotropy. The solution holds for applied fields with arbitrary strength and time dependence. Transition State Theory forms the basis of computing reaction rates in chemical and other systems. Recently it has been shown how transition state theory can rigorously be realized in phase space using an explicit algorithm. The quantization has been demonstrated to lead to an efficient procedure to compute cumulative reaction probabilities and the associated Gamov-Siegert resonances. The quantum normal form approach to quantum transition state theory is used to compute the cumulative reaction probability for collinear exchange reactions. It is shown that for heavy atom systems like the nitrogen exchange reaction the quantum normal form approach gives excellent results and has major computational benefits over full reactive scattering approaches. For light atom systems like the hydrogen exchange reaction however the quantum normal approach is shown to give only poor results. This failure is attributed to the importance of tunnelling trajectories in light atom reactions that are not captured by the quantum normal form as indicated by the only very slow convergence of the quantum normal form for such systems., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

The Loschmidt echo (LE) (or fidelity) quantifies the sensitivity of the time evolution of a quantum system with respect to a perturbation of the Hamiltonian. In a typical chaotic system the LE has been previously argued to exhibit a long-time saturation at a value inversely proportional to the effective size of the Hilbert space of the system. However, until now no quantitative results have been known and, in particular, no explicit expression for the proportionality constant has been proposed. In this paper we perform a quantitative analysis of the phenomenon of the LE saturation and provide the analytical expression for its long-time saturation value for a semiclassical particle in a two-dimensional chaotic billiard. We further perform extensive (fully quantum mechanical) numerical calculations of the LE saturation value and find the numerical results to support the semiclassical theory., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We address the decay in open chaotic quantum systems and calculate semiclassical corrections to the classical exponential decay. We confirm random matrix predictions and, going beyond, calculate Ehrenfest time effects. To support our results we perform extensive numerical simulations. Within our approach we show that certain (previously unnoticed) pairs of interfering, correlated classical trajectories are of vital importance. They also provide the dynamical mechanism for related phenomena such as photo-ionization and -dissociation, for which we compute cross section correlations. We address the sensitivity of quantum mechanical time evolution by considering the time decay of the Loschmidt echo (LE) (or fidelity) for local perturbations of the Hamiltonian. Within a semiclassical approach we derive analytical expressions for the LE decay for chaotic systems for the whole range from weak to strong local perturbations and identify different decay regimes which complement those known for the case of global perturbations. For weak perturbations a Fermi-golden-rule (FGR) type behavior is recovered. For strong perturbations the escape-rate regime is reached, where the LE decays exponentially with a rate independent of the perturbation strength. The transition between the FGR regime and the escape-rate regime is non-monotonic, i.e. the rate of the exponential time-decay of the LE oscillates as a function of the perturbation strength. We further perform extensive quantum mechanical calculations of the LE based on numerical wave packet evolution which strongly support our semiclassical theory. We investigate the sensitivity of the time evolution of semiclassical wave packets in two-dimensional chaotic billiards with respect to local perturbations of their boundaries. For this purpose, we address, analytically and numerically, the time decay of the Loschmidt echo (LE). We find the LE to decay exponentially in time, with the rate equal to the classical escape rate from an open billiard obtained from the original one by removing the perturbation-affected region of its boundary. We consider the time evolution of a wave packet representing a quantum particle moving in a geometrically open billiard that consists of a number of fixed hard-disk or hard-sphere scatterers. Using the technique of multiple collision expansions we provide a first-principle analytical calculation of the time-dependent autocorrelation function for the wave packet in the high-energy diffraction regime, in which the particle's de Broglie wave length, while being small compared to the size of the scatterers, is large enough to prevent the formation of geometric shadow over distances of the order of the particle's free flight path. The hard-disk or hard-sphere scattering system must be sufficiently dilute in order for this high-energy diffraction regime to be achievable. Apart from the overall exponential decay, the autocorrelation function exhibits a generally complicated sequence of relatively strong peaks corresponding to partial revivals of the wave packet. Both the exponential decay (or escape) rate and the revival peak structure are predominantly determined by the underlying classical dynamics. A relation between the escape rate, and the Lyapunov exponents and Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of the counterpart classical system, previously known for hard-disk billiards, is strengthened by generalization to three spatial dimensions. We consider the quantum mechanical propagator for a particle moving in a $d$-dimensional Lorentz gas, with fixed, hard sphere scatterers. To evaluate this propagator in the semi-classical region, and for times less than the Ehrenfest time, we express its effect on an initial Gaussian wave packet in terms of quantities analogous to those used to describe the exponential separation of trajectories in the classical version of this system. This result relates the spread of the wave packet to the rate of separation of classical trajectories, characterized by positive Lyapunov exponents. We consider applications of these results, first to illustrate the behavior of the wave-packet auto-correlation functions for wave packets on periodic orbits. The auto-correlation function can be related to the fidelity, or Loschmidt echo, for the special case that the perturbation is a small change in the mass of the particle. An exact expression for the fidelity, appropriate for this perturbation, leads to an analytical result valid over very long time intervals, inversely proportional to the size of the mass perturbation. For such perturbations, we then calculate the long-time echo for semi-classical wave packets on periodic orbits.
