5. An experimental study of low-velocity impacts into granular material in reduced gravity

Abstract

In order to improve our understanding of landing on small bodies and of asteroid evolution, we use our novel drop tower facility to perform low-velocity (2-40 cm s^-1), shallow impact experiments of a 10 cm diameter aluminum sphere into quartz sand in low effective gravities (~0.2-1 m s^-2). Using in situ accelerometers, we measure the acceleration profile during the impacts and determine the peak accelerations, collision durations and maximum penetration depth. We find that the penetration depth scales linearly with the collision velocity but is independent of the effective gravity for the experimental range tested, and that the collision duration is independent of both the effective gravity and the collision velocity. No rebounds are observed in any of the experiments. Our low-gravity experimental results indicate that the transition from the quasi-static regime to the inertial regime occurs for impact energies two orders of magnitude smaller than in similar impact experiments under terrestrial gravity. The lower energy regime change may be due to the increased hydrodynamic drag of the surface material in our experiments, but may also support the notion that the quasi-static regime reduces as the effective gravity becomes lower., Comment: Advance Access publication: January 4 2017

Abstract

This work presents an experimental design for studying low-velocity collisions into granular surfaces in low-gravity. In the experiment apparatus, reduced-gravity is simulated by releasing a free-falling projectile into a surface container with a downward acceleration less than that of Earth's gravity. The acceleration of the surface is controlled through the use of an Atwood machine, or a system of pulleys and counterweights. The starting height of the surface container and the initial separation distance between the projectile and surface are variable and chosen to accommodate collision velocities up to 20 cm/s and effective accelerations of ~0.1 - 1.0 m/s^2. Accelerometers, placed on the surface container and inside the projectile, provide acceleration data, while high-speed cameras capture the collision and act as secondary data sources. The experiment is built into an existing 5.5 m drop-tower frame and requires the custom design of all components, including the projectile, surface sample container, release mechanism and deceleration system. Data from calibration tests verify the efficiency of the experiment's deceleration system and provide a quantitative understanding of the performance of the Atwood system., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

International audience; It is well established that the transport sector contributes significantly to the global warming because of the high Carbon dioxide emission rate. A significant effort is being made in aeronautics for instance to green this sector. Green and decarbonized hydrogen processes taken at different Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) are considered in this article It mainly concerns co-electrolysis of water with CO2, pyrolysis and gasification of biomass and biowaste, reforming of biogas and biological conversion of both biomass and biowaste.; Le secteur du transport a un impact important sur les émissions de gaz carbonique, contribuant de manière significative au changement climatique. Dans ce contexte, le secteur aéronautique entreprend des efforts importants pour améliorer son empreinte carbone par l’utilisation de carburants verts ou décarbonés. L’hydrogène apparaît comme une solution d’avenir en tant que carburant pour les systèmes aéronautiques (avions et dispositifs au sol). Cet article aborde les procédés de production d’hydrogène renouvelable et vert à partir de carbone issu de la photosynthèse. Les procédés comme la co-électrolyse de l’eau, la pyrolyse et la gazéification de la biomasse et des biodéchets, le reformage du biogaz et la conversion biologique de la biomasse et des biodéchets.

34. A truncated low approach of intrinsic linear and nonlinear damping in thin structures

Abstract

An adaptive approach of vibrating thin structures is proposed here. The method consists in applying an equivalent adimensional damping ratio to each potential resonance. This ratio is deduced from experimental data obtained in vacuum facility, in relation with frequencies, for several structural technologies. Consequently, it is possible to calculate the structure in a linear nondissipative context, valid out of resonance bands, and truncated in those bands. Thus, the equivalent damping ratio is directly used to define a dimensional resonance truncation bandwith and level. The contribution consists in tested and applied modal methodology and algebraic representations of damping including several dissipations--viscous and internal microfrictions--inducing a nonmonotonous model. The here aim is to provide realistic recommendations for simple vibrational analysis of aerospace thin structures--panels and stiffeners. Abstract

Les méthodes employées dans l’industrie pour modéliser un problème physique fonctionnent généralement par assemblage de modèles élémentaires locaux, requérant le maillage de l’ensemble du domaine. Partant des principes de condensation sur les conditions aux limites et appliquant une technique d’ « intégration virtuelle » les méthodes intégrales ne maillent que la frontière. Très performantes et tirant parti de singularités d’intégration, elles sont adaptées aux problèmes contemporains et sont appelées à se développer. Cet article présente les bases de la méthode des singularités sur des exemples de mécanique (solide et fluide) et propose des extensions à d’autres domaines de la physique.

Abstract

National audience; The use of titanium alloys in the aeronautical and high technology domains is widespread. The high strength and the low mass are two outstanding characteristics of titanium alloys which permit to produce parts for these domains. As other hard materials, it is challenging to generate 3D surfaces (e.g. pockets) when using conventional cutting methods. The development of Abrasive Water Jet Machining (AWJM) technology shows the capability to cut any kind of materials and it seems to be a good solution for such titanium materials with low specific force, low deformation of parts and low thermal shocks. Applying this technology for generating 3D surfaces requires to adopt a modelling approach. However, a general methodology results in complex models due to a lot of parameters of the machining process and based on numerous experiments. This study introduces an extended geometry model of an elementary pass when changing the firing angle during machining Ti-6AL-4V titanium alloy with a given machine configuration. Several experiments are conducted to observe the influence of major kinematic operating parameters, i.e. jet inclination angle (α) (perpendicular to the feed direction) and traverse speed (Vf). The material exposure time and the erosion capability of abrasives particles are affected directly by a variation of the traverse speed (Vf) and firing angle (α). These variations lead to different erosion rates along the kerf profile characterized by the depth and width of cut. A comparison demonstrated an efficiency of the proposed model for depth and width of elementary passes. Based on knowledge of the influence of both firing angle and traverse speed on the elementary pass shape, the proposed model allows to develop the simulation of AWJM process and paves a way for milling flat bottom pockets and 3D complex shapes.
