1. Applying Data Mining for School Dropout Prediction in Higher Education at a Federal Institute for Education

Abstract

Data Mining is a process that seeks to extract useful knowledge and uncover patterns from data. School dropout is still one of the challenges to be tackled in the Higher Education environment. This paper presents a tool that uses a model that aims to predict a potential dropout of undergraduate students of a higher education institution using Machine Learning algorithms. In order to perform the predictions, we used the Decision Tree and Neural Network techniques, where the former achieved the best performance, with 84% precision and 87% accuracy in detecting dropout, while the second achieved 82% accuracy with 78% precision. Besides, given the data obtained from the institution, the most important features that help prediction school dropout are the average number of classes skipped in previous semester and the student’s age.

2. Evaluation of the eddy diffusivity in a pollutant dispersion model in the planetary boundary layer

Abstract

In this work, eddy diffusivity is derived from the energy spectra for the stable and convective regimes in the planetary boundary layer. The energy spectra are obtained from a spectral model for the inertial subrange that considers the anomalous behavior of turbulence. This spectrum is expressed as a function of the Hausdorff fractal dimension. The diffusivity eddies are employed in a classical Eulerian dispersion model, where the derivatives are of integer order and in fractional dispersion model, where the derivatives are of fractional order. The eddy diffusivity proposed considers the anomalous nature of geophysical turbulent flow. The results obtained with the fractional and classic dispersion models using the eddy diffusivity proposed is satisfactory when compared with the experimental data of the Prairie Grass and Hanford experiments in a stable regime, and the Copenhagen experiment in a convective regime.

Abstract

In 2012, Brazil began the studies to send its first deep space exploration mission, ASTER, which would be the first mission to orbit a triple asteroid system, 2001 SN263. We aim to contribute to the ASTER mission by defining the parameters of a multispectral camera system that will be used to study the asteroid system 2001 SN263, through software simulations that should help planning the data collection. We inserted the shape model of the objects in the software POV-Ray and modeled two cameras, a Wide Angle (WAC) and a Narrow Angle (NAC). We inserted the asteroid's parameters and simulated the satellite position. We created various scenes so we could obtain a good view of the asteroid. Alpha is entirely visible only in the WAC images, while the NAC is expected to reveal surface details. Beta seems relatively small in the WAC images, whereas we obtain a broad view from the NAC at 100 km distance. Gamma, smaller than Beta, should provide more detailed images through the NAC, whereas the WAC images should be able to show its inclined orbit around Alpha. To see Gamma behind Alpha in its revolution movement, we would have to elevate the camera's orbit. The method employed to simulate images generated by satellite cameras can be applied to other scenarios where the target requires imaging, extending beyond the field of planetary geology.

Abstract

Axions are a well-motivated dark matter candidate particle. Haloscopes aim to detect axions in the galactic halo by measuring the photon signal resulting from axions interacting with a strong magnetic field. Existing haloscopes are primarily targeting axion masses which produce microwave-range photons and rely on microwave resonators to enhance the signal power. Only a limited subset of resonator modes are useful for this process, and current cylindrical-style cavities suffer from mode mixing and crowding from other fundamental modes. The majority of these modes can be eliminated by using photonic band gap (PBG) resonators. The band gap behavior of these structures allows for a resonator with mode selectivity based on frequency. We present results from the first tunable PBG resonator, a proof-of-concept design with a footprint compatible with axion haloscopes. We have thoroughly characterized the tuning range of two versions of the structure and report the successful confinement of the operating TM$_{010}$ mode and the elimination of all TE modes within the tuning range., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

5. On-the-fly spectral unmixing based on Kalman filtering

Abstract

This work introduces an on-the-fly (i.e., online) linear unmixing method which is able to sequentially analyze spectral data acquired on a spectrum-by-spectrum basis. After deriving a sequential counterpart of the conventional linear mixing model, the proposed approach recasts the linear unmixing problem into a linear state-space estimation framework. Under Gaussian noise and state models, the estimation of the pure spectra can be efficiently conducted by resorting to Kalman filtering. Interestingly, it is shown that this Kalman filter can operate in a lower-dimensional subspace while ensuring the nonnegativity constraint inherent to pure spectra. This dimensionality reduction allows significantly lightening the computational burden, while leveraging recent advances related to the representation of essential spectral information. The proposed method is evaluated through extensive numerical experiments conducted on synthetic and real Raman data sets. The results show that this Kalman filter-based method offers a convenient trade-off between unmixing accuracy and computational efficiency, which is crucial for operating in an on-the-fly setting. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first operational method which is able to solve the spectral unmixing problem efficiently in a dynamic fashion. It also constitutes a valuable building block for benefiting from acquisition and processing frameworks recently proposed in the microscopy literature, which are motivated by practical issues such as reducing acquisition time and avoiding potential damages being inflicted to photosensitive samples.

6. Clarabel: An interior-point solver for conic programs with quadratic objectives

Abstract

We present a general-purpose interior-point solver for convex optimization problems with conic constraints. Our method is based on a homogeneous embedding method originally developed for general monotone complementarity problems and more recently applied to operator splitting methods, and here specialized to an interior-point method for problems with quadratic objectives. We allow for a variety of standard symmetric and non-symmetric cones, and provide support for chordal decomposition methods in the case of semidefinite cones. We describe the implementation of this method in the open-source solver Clarabel, and provide a detailed numerical evaluation of its performance versus several state-of-the-art solvers on a wide range of standard benchmarks problems. Clarabel is faster and more robust than competing commercial and open-source solvers across a range of test sets, with a particularly large performance advantage for problems with quadratic objectives. Clarabel is currently distributed as a standard solver for the Python CVXPY optimization suite.

7. Photon traps in nonlinear electrodynamics

Abstract

We demonstrate the existence of photon traps within the framework of nonlinear electrodynamics. The trapping mechanism is based on the fact that, for null background fields, the optical metric reduces to the Kerr-Schild form, which plays a prominent role in the context of black hole physics. We then construct explicit examples where photons are confined in a region of spacetime, such that a distant observer cannot interact with them. Finally, we argue that the trapping scheme is quite universal, being entirely compatible with causality, energy conditions, and hyperbolicity., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

8. A neural network-based approach to hybrid systems identification for control

Abstract

We consider the problem of designing a machine learning-based model of an unknown dynamical system from a finite number of (state-input)-successor state data points, such that the model obtained is also suitable for optimal control design. We propose a specific neural network (NN) architecture that yields a hybrid system with piecewise-affine dynamics that is differentiable with respect to the network's parameters, thereby enabling the use of derivative-based training procedures. We show that a careful choice of our NN's weights produces a hybrid system model with structural properties that are highly favourable when used as part of a finite horizon optimal control problem (OCP). Specifically, we show that optimal solutions with strong local optimality guarantees can be computed via nonlinear programming, in contrast to classical OCPs for general hybrid systems which typically require mixed-integer optimization. In addition to being well-suited for optimal control design, numerical simulations illustrate that our NN-based technique enjoys very similar performance to state-of-the-art system identification methodologies for hybrid systems and it is competitive on nonlinear benchmarks.

Abstract

Monochromatic gamma-ray signals constitute a potential smoking gun signature for annihilating or decaying dark matter particles that could relatively easily be distinguished from astrophysical or instrumental backgrounds. We provide an updated assessment of the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to such signals, based on observations of the Galactic centre region as well as of selected dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We find that current limits and detection prospects for dark matter masses above 300 GeV will be significantly improved, by up to an order of magnitude in the multi-TeV range. This demonstrates that CTA will set a new standard for gamma-ray astronomy also in this respect, as the world's largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory, in particular due to its exquisite energy resolution at TeV energies and the adopted observational strategy focussing on regions with large dark matter densities. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date instrument response functions, and we thoroughly model the effect of instrumental systematic uncertainties in our statistical treatment. 10. Performance Gaps in Multi-view Clustering under the Nested Matrix-Tensor Model

Abstract

We study the estimation of a planted signal hidden in a recently introduced nested matrix-tensor model, which is an extension of the classical spiked rank-one tensor model, motivated by multi-view clustering. Prior work has theoretically examined the performance of a tensor-based approach, which relies on finding a best rank-one approximation, a problem known to be computationally hard. A tractable alternative approach consists in computing instead the best rank-one (matrix) approximation of an unfolding of the observed tensor data, but its performance was hitherto unknown. We quantify here the performance gap between these two approaches, in particular by deriving the precise algorithmic threshold of the unfolding approach and demonstrating that it exhibits a BBP-type transition behavior. This work is therefore in line with recent contributions which deepen our understanding of why tensor-based methods surpass matrix-based methods in handling structured tensor data.

Abstract

Cells are the fundamental unit of biological organization, and identifying them in imaging data - cell segmentation - is a critical task for various cellular imaging experiments. While deep learning methods have led to substantial progress on this problem, models that have seen wide use are specialist models that work well for specific domains. Methods that have learned the general notion of "what is a cell" and can identify them across different domains of cellular imaging data have proven elusive. In this work, we present CellSAM, a foundation model for cell segmentation that generalizes across diverse cellular imaging data. CellSAM builds on top of the Segment Anything Model (SAM) by developing a prompt engineering approach to mask generation. We train an object detector, CellFinder, to automatically detect cells and prompt SAM to generate segmentations. We show that this approach allows a single model to achieve state-of-the-art performance for segmenting images of mammalian cells (in tissues and cell culture), yeast, and bacteria collected with various imaging modalities. To enable accessibility, we integrate CellSAM into DeepCell Label to further accelerate human-in-the-loop labeling strategies for cellular imaging data. Abstract

This work introduces an asymptotic study of Hotelling-type tensor deflation in the presence of noise, in the regime of large tensor dimensions. Specifically, we consider a low-rank asymmetric tensor model of the form $\sum_{i=1}^r \beta_i{\mathcal{A}}_i + {\mathcal{W}}$ where $\beta_i\geq 0$ and the ${\mathcal{A}}_i$'s are unit-norm rank-one tensors such that $\left| \langle {\mathcal{A}}_i, {\mathcal{A}}_j \rangle \right| \in [0, 1]$ for $i\neq j$ and ${\mathcal{W}}$ is an additive noise term. Assuming that the dominant components are successively estimated from the noisy observation and subsequently subtracted, we leverage recent advances in random tensor theory in the regime of asymptotically large tensor dimensions to analytically characterize the estimated singular values and the alignment of estimated and true singular vectors at each step of the deflation procedure. Furthermore, this result can be used to construct estimators of the signal-to-noise ratios $\beta_i$ and the alignments between the estimated and true rank-1 signal components., Comment: Accepted at IEEE CAMSAP 2023. Abstract

The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. Abstract

Galaxy clusters are expected to be dark matter (DM) reservoirs and storage rooms for the cosmic-ray protons (CRp) that accumulate along the cluster's formation history. Accordingly, they are excellent targets to search for signals of DM annihilation and decay at gamma-ray energies and are predicted to be sources of large-scale gamma-ray emission due to hadronic interactions in the intracluster medium. We estimate the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to detect diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Perseus galaxy cluster. We perform a detailed spatial and spectral modelling of the expected signal for the DM and the CRp components. For each, we compute the expected CTA sensitivity. The observing strategy of Perseus is also discussed. In the absence of a diffuse signal (non-detection), CTA should constrain the CRp to thermal energy ratio within the radius $R_{500}$ down to about $X_{500}<3\times 10^{-3}$, for a spatial CRp distribution that follows the thermal gas and a CRp spectral index $\alpha_{\rm CRp}=2.3$. Under the optimistic assumption of a pure hadronic origin of the Perseus radio mini-halo and depending on the assumed magnetic field profile, CTA should measure $\alpha_{\rm CRp}$ down to about $\Delta\alpha_{\rm CRp}\simeq 0.1$ and the CRp spatial distribution with 10% precision. Regarding DM, CTA should improve the current ground-based gamma-ray DM limits from clusters observations on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section by a factor of up to $\sim 5$, depending on the modelling of DM halo substructure. In the case of decay of DM particles, CTA will explore a new region of the parameter space, reaching models with $\tau_{\chi}>10^{27}$s for DM masses above 1 TeV. These constraints will provide unprecedented sensitivity to the physics of both CRp acceleration and transport at cluster scale and to TeV DM particle models, especially in the decay scenario., Comment: 93 pages (including author list, appendix and references), 143 figures. Abstract

Diamond Light Source produces synchrotron radiation by accelerating electrons to relativistic speeds. In order to maximise the intensity of the radiation, vibrations of the electron beam are attenuated by a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) control system actuating hundreds of magnets at kilohertz rates. For future accelerator configurations, in which two separate arrays of magnets with different bandwidths are used in combination, standard accelerator control design methods based on the singular value decomposition (SVD) of the system gain matrix are not suitable. We therefore propose to use the generalised singular value decomposition (GSVD) to decouple a two-array cross-directional (CD) system into sets of two-input single-output (TISO) and single-input single-output (SISO) systems. We demonstrate that the two-array decomposition is linked to a single-array system, which is used to accommodate ill-conditioned systems and compensate for the non-orthogonality of the GSVD. The GSVD-based design is implemented and validated through real-world experiments at Diamond. Our approach provides a natural extension of single-array methods and has potential application in other CD systems, including paper making, steel rolling or battery manufacturing processes.

Abstract Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and chronic heart failure (CHF) present a decrease in functional capacity due to the intrinsic nature of both pathologies. It is not known about the potential impact of T2DM on functional capacity when assessed by 6-min step test (6MST) and its effect as a prognostic marker for fatal and non-fatal events in patients with CHF. Objective to evaluate the coexistence of T2DM and CHF in functional capacity through 6MST when compared to CHF non-T2DM, as well as to investigate the different cardiovascular responses to 6MST and the risk of mortality, decompensation of CHF and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) over 36 months. Methods This is a prospective cohort study with 36 months of follow-up in individuals with T2DM and CHF. All participants completed a clinical assessment, followed by pulmonary function testing, echocardiography, and 6MST. The 6MST was performed on a 20 cm high step and cardiovascular responses were collected: heart rate, systemic blood pressure, oxygen saturation, BORG dyspnea and fatigue. The risk of mortality, acute myocardial infarction and decompensation of CHF was evaluated. Results Eighty-six participants were included. The CHF-T2DM group had a significantly lower functional capacity than the CHF non-T2DM group (p 0.05). Conclusion T2DM negatively affects the functional performance of 6MST in patients with CHF. Gender, ejection fraction (%), FEV1 (L) and T2DM itself negatively influence exercise performance.

Abstract

RESUMO Com o objetivo de identificar as técnicas e os instrumentos utilizados para avaliar treinamentos de habilidades sociais em grupo com crianças de 6 a 12 anos, com desenvolvimento típico ou atípico nos contextos brasileiro e internacional, foi realizada uma revisão integrativa da literatura a partir da seleção de 37 estudos conforme os critérios de elegibilidade adotados. Identificou-se, na maioria das pesquisas, o predomínio de técnicas quantitativas e a prevalência de medidas padronizadas para avaliar treinamentos, aspecto que corrobora a metodologia adotada em pesquisas quasi-experimentais e experimentais. Também foi observado que as técnicas utilizadas para avaliação dos treinamentos foram aplicadas predominantemente com as crianças participantes da intervenção, conferindo protagonismo a elas nesse tipo de investigação. Discute-se a contribuição de técnicas qualitativas em pesquisas aplicadas e a dicotomia entre as abordagens quantitativa e qualitativa, propondo métodos mistos de investigação.

Abstract To verify if data obtained in the prehospital evaluation of patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) during the initial response to the COVID-19 pandemic is associated with clinical outcomes: mechanical ventilation, hospital discharge, and death. This is a retrospective analysis involving secondary data from the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) records and the Health Surveillance Information System of patients assisted by the EMS in Manaus, from January to June 2020, the period of the first peak of COVID-19 cases. The combination of the two databases yielded a total of 1.190 patients, who received a first EMS response and were later admitted to hospital with SARS and had data on clinical outcomes of interest available. Abstract

Background and Aim: Measuring intraocular pressure (IOP) is crucial for identifying potentially damaging changes in the eyes, including diseases as glaucoma and uveitis. This study compared intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements in cats using the Tonovet and Tonovet Plus (rebound), Tono-Pen Avia Vet (applanation), and Kowa HA-2 (Goldman’s methodology applanation) tonometers. Materials and Methods: 55 healthy cats (108 eyes) were assessed through three distinct studies: An ex vivo experiment (10 eyes of five cats) to correlate IOP manometry and tonometry values and ascertain the correlation coefficient (r2); an in vivo study (10 eyes of five sedated cats) to contrast manometer and tonometer readings; and an outpatient clinical trial (80 eyes of 45 cats) to analyze only tonometer measurements. Results: The r2 values observed in the ex vivo study were Tonovet (0.923), Tonovet Plus (0.925), Tono-Pen Avia Vet (0.877), and Kowa HA-2 (0.901). The IOP values in mmHg in the in vivo study were as follows: Manometer (16.1 ± 2.7), Tonovet (21.1 ± 3.6), Tonovet Plus (19.7 ± 7.2), Tono-Pen Avia Vet (17.6 ± 7.9), and Kowa HA-2 (16.8 ± 2.0). In the outpatient clinical study, the IOP values in mmHg were as follows: Tonovet (19.7 ± 6.6), Tonovet Plus (17.1 ± 5.4), Tono-Pen Avia Vet (16.3 ± 4.3), and Kowa HA-2 (14.5 ± 2.2). Conclusion: IOP and manometry readings were strongly correlated by all tonometers. In the clinical setting, the most and least IOP measurements were recorded using Tonovet and Kowa HA-2, respectively, stressing the importance of an IOP reference table for each tonometer in feline practice.

Abstract

Abstract Humans exhibit consistent color preferences that are often described as a curvilinear pattern across hues. The recent literature posits that color preference is linked to the preference for objects or other entities associated with those colors. However, many studies examine this preference using isoluminant colors, which don’t reflect the natural viewing experience typically influenced by different light intensities. The inclusion of random luminance levels (luminance noise) in chromatic stimuli may provide an initial step towards assessing color preference as it is presented in the real world. Employing mosaic stimuli, this study aimed to evaluate the influence of luminance noise on human color preference. Thirty normal trichromats engaged in a two-alternative forced-choice paradigm, indicating their color preferences between presented pairs. The chromatic stimuli included saturated versions of 8 standard hues, presented in mosaics with varying diameters under different luminance noise conditions. Results indicated that the inclusion of luminance noise increased color preference across all hues, specifically under the high luminance noise range, while the curvilinear pattern remained unchanged. Finally, women exhibit a greater sensitivity to the presence of luminance noise than men, potentially due to differences between men and women in aesthetic evaluation strategies.

Abstract Objectives To identify the prevalence and associated factors of cognitive dysfunction, 1 year after ICU discharge, among adult patients, and it´s relation with quality of life. Methods Multicenter, prospective cohort study including ICUs of 10 tertiary hospitals in Brazil, between May 2014 and December 2018. The patients included were 452 adult ICU survivors (median age 60; 47.6% women) with an ICU stay greater than 72 h. Abstract

Abstract Introduction Pollution harms the health of people with asthma. The effect of the anti-inflammatory cholinergic pathway in chronic allergic inflammation associated to pollution is poorly understood. Methods One hundred eight animals were divided into 18 groups (6 animals). Groups included: wild type mice (WT), genetically modified with reduced VAChT (VAChTKD), and those sensitized with ovalbumin (VAChTKDA), exposed to metal powder due to iron pelletizing in mining company (Local1) or 3.21 miles away from a mining company (Local2) in their locations for 2 weeks during summer and winter seasons. It was analyzed for hyperresponsivity, inflammation, remodeling, oxidative stress responses and the cholinergic system. Results During summer, animals without changes in the cholinergic system revealed that Local1 exposure increased the hyperresponsiveness (%Rrs, %Raw), and inflammation (IL-17) relative to vivarium animals, while animals exposed to Local2 also exhibited elevated IL-17. During winter, animals without changes in the cholinergic system revealed that Local2 exposure increased the hyperresponsiveness (%Rrs) relative to vivarium animals. Comparing the exposure local of these animals during summer, animals exposed to Local1 showed elevated %Rrs, Raw, and IL-5 compared to Local 2, while in winter, Local2 exposure led to more IL-17 than Local1. Animals with VAChT attenuation displayed increased %Rrs, NFkappaB, IL-5, and IL-13 but reduced alpha-7 compared to animals without changes in the cholinergic system WT. Animals with VAChT attenuation and asthma showed increased the hyperresponsiveness, all inflammatory markers, remodeling and oxidative stress compared to animals without chronic lung inflammation. Exposure to Local1 exacerbated the hyperresponsiveness, oxidative stressand inflammation in animals with VAChT attenuation associated asthma, while Local2 exposure led to increased inflammation, remodeling and oxidative stress. Conclusions Reduced cholinergic signaling amplifies lung inflammation in a model of chronic allergic lung inflammation. Furthermore, when associated with pollution, it can aggravate specific responses related to inflammation, oxidative stress, and remodeling.
