1. The Ediacaran--Cambrian Chapel Island Formation of Newfoundland, Canada: evaluating the impact of outcrop quality on trace-fossil data sets at the Cambrian GSSP and less-explored sections

Abstract

In 1992, the Chapel Island Formation at Fortune Head was selected as the Cambrian GSSP, which was placed at the first appearance of the ichnotaxon Treptichnus pedum. Although the transition from the Ediacaran to the Cambrian was well studied in Fortune Head and Grand Bank Head, it is also exposed at Lewin's Cove and Point May. Here, we report new ichnologic and sedimentologic data sets from the four localities. Ichnologic data sets consist of bioturbation intensities, burrow width and depth, ichnotaxonomic composition, and stratigraphic appearances. Sedimentologic data sets include sediment grain size, bed thickness and architecture, sandstone/mudstone ratio, and physical sedimentary structures. In addition, the quality of each outcrop is evaluated (i.e., accessibility, lateral and vertical continuity, stratigraphic completeness, and type of exposure). At the four localities, the base of the Cambrian can be placed at the first appearance of Treptichnus pedum or of vertical trace fossils of the T. pedum Ichno-Assemblage Zone. In addition, Fortune Head, Grand Bank Head, and Lewin's Cove display increases in ichnodiversity and bioturbation intensities that are concomitant with the first appearance of penetrative trace fossils. Point May stands out as a section with low ichnodiversity and an inconsistent data set on bioturbation intensities. Its limited data set is a consequence of poor bed surface exposures, which impact negatively on the preservation and visibility of horizontal trace fossils. This study demonstrates that evaluation of outcrop quality should be an essential procedure to any research addressing evolutionary trends that took place at this critical time of the history of life. 3. Identifying and accounting for outcrop constraints on observations in field-based ichnological studies.

Abstract

Quality and morphology of outcrop exposure places fundamental constraints on what ichnological observations can be made and the veracity of these observations. Whilst the limits and potential biases are well known and reported for core studies, in the majority of field studies the equivalent biases are typically overlooked. In this paper we present a widely applicable method for recording outcrop characteristics based on their morphology, and how these characteristics may affect observations. We consider the impacts of structural orientation, superficial cover, and outcrop location on outcrop quality. Finally, we present two case studies, from the Tumblagooda Sandstone of Western Australia and the Armorican Sandstone Formation of northwestern France, to highlight the importance of recording outcrop characteristics. 7. New insights into the early evolution of horizontal spiral trace fossils and the age of the Brioverian series (Ediacaran–Cambrian) in Brittany, NW France.

Abstract

In northwestern France, the Brioverian series is a thick siliciclastic succession deposited during the Cadomian cycle (c. 750–540 Ma). In the uppermost Brioverian beds, previous studies unravelled an assemblage dominated by simple horizontal trace fossils associated with microbially stabilized surfaces. Here, we report Spirodesmos trace fossils – one-way, irregular and regular horizontal spirals – from Crozon (Finistère, Brittany), Montfort-sur-Meu and St-Gonlay (Ille-et-Vilaine, Brittany). After reviewing the literature on horizontal spiral trace fossils, an Ediacaran–Fortunian Spirodesmos pool is identified from marginal-marine to shelf settings, while an Ordovician–Recent trend formed in the deep-marine realm. These results suggest that an onshore–offshore migration in Spirodesmos took place during Ediacaran–Fortunian to Ordovician time, similar to what happened in graphoglyptids. In addition, the age of the uppermost Brioverian beds (Ediacaran or early Cambrian) is still a pending question. Here, we report two new U–Pb detrital zircon datings from sandstone samples in St-Gonlay, giving maximum deposition ages of 551 ± 7 Ma and 540 ± 5 Ma. Although these results do not discard an Ediacaran age for the uppermost Brioverian beds, a Fortunian age is envisioned because the new dating corroborates previous dating from Brittany, Mayenne and Normandy. However, the intervals of error of the radiometric dating, and the dominance of non-penetrative trace fossils associated with matgrounds (an ecology more typical of the Ediacaran Period), do not allow definitive conclusions on the age of the uppermost Brioverian beds. International audience; Le Briovérien est une entité géologique qui affleure très largement dans le Massif Armoricain, épaisse de plus de 1000m et composée de faciès variés de conglomérats, de grès, et de siltites, produits depuis des zones côtières jusqu’à des contextes turbiditiques profonds. Elle est étudiée depuis la fin du XIXème siècle et reste pourtant mal datée et considérée, à tort, azoïque. Tout juste osait-on l’attribuer à la transition Ediacarien-Cambrien sans pour autant pouvoir identifier et localiser cette limite géologique fondamentale.L’étude récente et détaillée de nombreux sites du Finistère, du Morbihan, d’Ille-et-Vilaine et de Normandie permet pourtant d’apporter deux gammes d’informations qui en donnent une idée stratigraphiquement plus précise et paléontologiquement moins austère.D’une part, le Briovérien supérieur (584 à 540 Ma) présente localement des dépôts fossilifères, contenant essentiellement des ichnofossiles horizontaux générés par des métazoaires vermiformes (Helminthoidichnites tenuis, Helminthopsis tenuis,Gordia marina) mais aussi plus ponctuelle- ment des fossiles d’algues macroscopiques (Chuaria), de métazoaires discoïdes (Beltanelloides, ?Nimbia), ou d’annélides indéterminés.D’autre part, les datations radiochronologiques sur grains de zircons détritiques issus de dépôts du Briovérien et provenant de six sites en Bretagne et trois sites en Normandie, fossilifères ou non, dévoilent des cortèges d’âges dont les plus récents plaident, selon les sites, pour de l’Ediacarien final (550 Ma) ou du Cambrien (540 Ma, voire 530 Ma).Qu’il s’agisse d’Ediacarien avéré ou de Cambrien inférieur, le Briovérien n’est donc pas à négliger dans la caractérisation du passage Précambrien-Paléozoïque en Europe, et peut apporter de précieuses informations paléontologiques et stratigraphiques.

The study is based on fossils from the type-localities of the historical Brioverian taxa Montfortia (traces from Montfort-sur- Meu) and Neantia (wrinkle surfaces from Néant-sur-Yvel), and on two new outcrops from Saint-Gonlay. The ichnofossil assemblage includes Helminthoidichnites tenuis, Helminthopsis tenuis, Gordia marina, Palaeophycus tubularis, ?Neonereites uniserialis, and ?Spirodesmos archimedeus. Locally, the grazing traces are associated with wrinkle surfaces considered as microbially induced sedimentary structures (MISS). The sedimentological characteristics of these deposits correspond to a shelf marine environment. Both U-Pb datings on detrital zircon and ichnostratigraphic criteria tend toward an Ediacaran age of the fossiliferous deposits, but we cannot exclude the possibility of a Fortunian age at the present state of knowledge

Abstract

National audience; L’origine de la vie est une problématique fondamentale, tantpour les paléontologues que pour les biologistes. Au sein de cevaste questionnement sur la vie primitive, l’émergence des métazoairesà l’Ediacarien (635-541 Millions d’années) constitue unmoment-clé qui n’est qu’assez peu documenté dans le registrefossile. Les gisements fossilifères les plus remarquables et les plusétudiés sont situés en Australie, en Afrique du Sud, au Canadaou en Chine, mais à ce jour peu de données de terrain ont étéacquises en Europe et encore moins à l’échelle ouest-européenne.Pourtant, potentiellement, la Bretagne et la Normandie constituentun cadre géologique optimal pour y découvrir et y analyserla faune et la microflore édiacariennes. En effet, le Massif Armoricainprésente de larges affleurements de Briovérien (stratotype àSaint-Lô), un ensemble de couches sédimentaires marines (-667à -540 Ma), peu ou pas métamorphisées, qui couvre l’intervalletemporel Ediacarien-Cambrien basal. Qui plus est, bien que réputéazoïque, le Briovérien supérieur (-584 à -540 Ma) présente localementdes dépôts fossilifères. Les fossiles les plus fréquents sontde deux types : (1) des pistes ou terriers horizontaux et filiformes,attestant des activités de métazoaires vermiformes, ces fossilesayant été dénommés Montfortia filiformis par Lebesconte à lafin du XIXème siècle, car provenant de Montfort-sur-Meu (Côtesd’Armor) ; (2) des surfaces ridées (voire annelées), d’extensionset de formes variables, considérées tout à tour comme des métazoaires(verts plats ?, médusoïdes ?) ou des mattes microbiennes,et baptisées Neantia rhedonensis par Lebesconte, car provenantde Néant-sur-Yvel (Côtes d’Armor).Les collections historiques de l’UMR 6118 de Rennes et duMuséum de Nantes, issues des récoltes de Lebesconte à la findu XIXème, et la prospection de nouveaux gisements par lespaléontologues rennais, ont permis de réaliser une synthèse actualiséedes fossiles du Briovérien. Pour l’essentiel, il s’agit demattes microbiennes (Neantia) et d’ichnofossiles (Helminthoidichnites,Helminthopsis, Palaeophycus, Planolites, Spirodesmos, ...),mais des découvertes récentes témoignent de la préservationd’organismes de tailles diverses (algues Chuaria, annélides indét.,médusoïdes indét., incertae sedis, ...).Les datations de deux sites fossilifères, distants de 30 kms, sontcongruentes avec pour cortège de zircons le plus récent un âge de550 Ma, donc plutôt Ediacarien (la base du Cambrien étant fixéeà -541 Ma).
