Ambient energy harvesting has great potential to contribute to sustainable development and address growing environmental challenges. Converting waste energy from energy-intensive processes and systems (e.g. combustion engines and furnaces) is crucial to reducing their environmental impact and achieving net-zero emissions. Compact energy harvesters will also be key to powering the exponentially growing smart devices ecosystem that is part of the Internet of Things, thus enabling futuristic applications that can improve our quality of life (e.g. smart homes, smart cities, smart manufacturing, and smart healthcare). To achieve these goals, innovative materials are needed to efficiently convert ambient energy into electricity through various physical mechanisms, such as the photovoltaic effect, thermoelectricity, piezoelectricity, triboelectricity, and radiofrequency wireless power transfer. By bringing together the perspectives of experts in various types of energy harvesting materials, this Roadmap provides extensive insights into recent advances and present challenges in the field. Additionally, the Roadmap analyses the key performance metrics of these technologies in relation to their ultimate energy conversion limits. Building on these insights, the Roadmap outlines promising directions for future research to fully harness the potential of energy harvesting materials for green energy anytime, anywhere.

Les travaux ont permis de répondre à une question cruciale que se posent de nombreux vignerons et consommateurs : l'application de cire de surbouchage joue-t-elle un rôle protecteur contre l'oxydation du vin lors de son vieillissement en bouteille ?

Extensive ichnologic and sedimentologic datasets were gathered from six localities (Fortune Head, Fortune North, Grand Bank Head, Lewin's Cove, Little Dantzic Cove, and Point May) of the Ediacaran–Cambrian Chapel Island Formation at Burin Peninsula, southeastern Newfoundland, eastern Canada. 1708.2 m of sedimentary strata were logged at a centimeter scale (1:40) using a Jacob staff, in addition to 11.08 m of strata reported at a millimeter scale (1:1.67). Sedimentary logs focus on: (1) bed geometry; (2) bed thickness; (3) bed grain size; (4) sandstone/ mudstone ratio; and (5) sedimentary structures. For each log, trace-fossil datasets were reported, consisting of: (1) bioturbation intensity in cross-section (1596 data points); (2) bed surface bioturbation intensity (1481 data points); (3) stratigraphic position of individual trace fossils; (4) trace-fossil width (3164 data points); (5) trace-fossil depth (1539 data points); and (6) ichnotaxonomic classification (3510 trace fossils identified at ichnospecies rank). The datasets are of importance to researchers interested in the palaeoecological signals depicted in this classic Ediacaran–Cambrian succession or in the compilation of worldwide data for deciphering macro-evolutionary trends in early animal life.

Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc wines aged in oak wood barrels with low and medium tannin potentials were discriminated for their abilities to resist against oxidation during bottle storage. The oak wood tannin potential was positively correlated to wines antioxidant capacity after 2 and 4 years of bottle aging. Untargeted molecular analysis revealed that the Sauvignon blanc metabolome was more affected by the tannin potential than the Chardonnay. Supervised statistical analysis highlighted the extensive oak wood contribution to the wine chemical fingerprints. Wines aged in barrel of medium tannin potential were associated with higher concentrations in antioxidant compounds such as dipeptides. Moreover, quantitative differences were observed between oak barrel derived volatile compounds. Sauvignon blanc volatile thiols appeared to decrease during bottle aging, regardless of the oak tannin potential. This study highlights the post bottling positive impact of oak wood barrel aging on wines oxidative stability, related to oak barrel tannin potential.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic immune-mediated neurological disorder, characterized by progressive demyelination and neuronal cell loss in the central nervous system. Many possible causes of MS have been proposed, including genetic factors, environmental triggers, and infectious agents. Recently, Clostridium perfringens epsilon toxin (ETX) has been incriminated in MS, based initially on the isolation of the bacteria from a MS patient, combined with an immunoreactivity to ETX. To investigate a putative causative role of ETX in MS, we analyzed the pattern of antibodies reacting to the toxin using a sensitive qualitative assay. This prospective observational study included one hundred patients with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), all untreated, and ninety matched healthy controls. By assessing the isotypic pattern and serum concentration of ETX-reacting antibodies, our study shows a predominant IgM response over IgG and IgA antibody responses both in MS patients and controls, and significantly higher levels of IgM reacting to ETX in MS patients compared to the control group. A longitudinal follow-up of ETX-specific antibody response in a subgroup of MS patients did not show any correlation with disease evolution. Overall, these unexpected findings are not compatible with a specific recognition of ETX by serum antibodies from MS patients. They rather argue for a cross immunological reactivity with an antigen, possibly an autoantigen, mimicking ETX. Thus, our data argue against the hypothesis of a causal relationship between C. perfringens ETX and MS.

In 1992, the Chapel Island Formation at Fortune Head was selected as the Cambrian GSSP, which was placed at the first appearance of the ichnotaxon Treptichnus pedum. Although the transition from the Ediacaran to the Cambrian was well studied in Fortune Head and Grand Bank Head, it is also exposed at Lewin's Cove and Point May. Here, we report new ichnologic and sedimentologic data sets from the four localities. Ichnologic data sets consist of bioturbation intensities, burrow width and depth, ichnotaxonomic composition, and stratigraphic appearances. Sedimentologic data sets include sediment grain size, bed thickness and architecture, sandstone/mudstone ratio, and physical sedimentary structures. In addition, the quality of each outcrop is evaluated (i.e., accessibility, lateral and vertical continuity, stratigraphic completeness, and type of exposure). At the four localities, the base of the Cambrian can be placed at the first appearance of Treptichnus pedum or of vertical trace fossils of the T. pedum Ichno-Assemblage Zone. In addition, Fortune Head, Grand Bank Head, and Lewin's Cove display increases in ichnodiversity and bioturbation intensities that are concomitant with the first appearance of penetrative trace fossils. Point May stands out as a section with low ichnodiversity and an inconsistent data set on bioturbation intensities. Its limited data set is a consequence of poor bed surface exposures, which impact negatively on the preservation and visibility of horizontal trace fossils. This study demonstrates that evaluation of outcrop quality should be an essential procedure to any research addressing evolutionary trends that took place at this critical time of the history of life. A study of changes in oxygen transfer through micro-agglomerated corks was carried out over 24 months under controlled storage conditions (Chanut et al., 2023a). This work demonstrated that the glass/cork interface can represent a major entry route for oxygen into wine bottles. It also showed that there is no difference in oxygen transfer at 20°C between bottles stored horizontally and vertically. However, high storage temperature greatly increases oxygen transfer at the interface between the cork and the bottleneck.

Understanding the viral-host cell interface during HIV-1 infection is a prerequisite for the development of innovative antiviral therapies. Here we show that the suppressor of G2 allele of skp1 (SUGT1) is a permissive factor for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 infection. Expression of SUGT1 increases in infected cells on human brain sections and in permissive host cells. We found that SUGT1 determines the permissiveness to infection of lymphocytes and macrophages by modulating the nuclear import of the viral genome. More importantly, SUGT1 stabilizes the microtubule plus-ends (+MTs) of host cells (through the modulation of microtubule acetylation and the formation of end-binding protein 1 (EB1) comets). This effect on microtubules favors HIV-1 retrograde trafficking and replication. SUGT1 depletion impairs the replication of HIV-1 patient primary isolates and mutant virus that is resistant to raltegravir antiretroviral agent. Altogether our results identify SUGT1 as a cellular factor involved in the post-entry steps of HIV-1 infection that may be targeted for new therapeutic approaches.

The performance of blue-green infrastructures (BGIs) has been well documented in temperate and subtropical climates, but evidence supporting their application in cold climates, especially during snowmelt, is still scarce. To address this gap, the present study proposes a modeling method for simulating the performance of bioretention cells during snowmelt according to different spatial implementation scenarios. We used the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) of a catchment in a medium-sized city in Quebec, Canada as a case study. Pollutants commonly found in the snow (TSS, Cr, Pb, Zn, Cl–) were included in the model using event mean concentrations (EMCs) documented in the literature. Bioretention cells performed best on industrial road sites for the entire snowmelt period. Bioretention cell performance was affected by snow management procedures applied to the roads in residential areas. Not modeling the snow cover build-up and meltdown in the simulation led to higher runoff and bioretention cell performance. Modeling results facilitated the identification of bioretention cell sites that efficiently controlled runoff during snowmelt. Such information is needed to support decision planning for BGIs in cities with cold climate. HIGHLIGHTS Land use and snow management procedures impact bioretention cell performance.; Modeled bioretention cells implemented on industrial roads show the best performance for snowmelt runoff.; Ignoring snow cover build-up and meltdown modeling leads to higher runoff volume and bioretention cell performance.; Bioretention cell soil freezing should be considered in future blue-green infrastructure modeling under a cold climate.;

Zika virus (ZIKV) dramatically emerged in French Polynesia and subsequently in the Americas where it has been associated with severe neurological complications in adults and newborns, respectively. Although plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) are a key sensor of viral infection and are critical for initiating an antiviral response, little is known about the impact of ZIKV infection on pDCs. Here, we investigated the susceptibility of human pDCs to infection with multiple strains of ZIKV and further investigated the impact of infection on pDCs functions. We observed that pDCs were refractory to cell-free ZIKV virions but were effectively infected when co-cultured with ZIKV-infected cells. However, exposure of pDCs to ZIKV-infected cells resulted in limited maturation/activation with significant down regulation of CD303 expression, a severe impairment of inflammatory cytokine production, and an inability to mount an IFN-α response. We show that ZIKV developed a strategy to inhibit the IFN-α response in primary human pDCs likely mediated through NS1-dependent CD303 signaling, thus suggesting a new mechanism of immune evasion.

In contrast with the elaboration of still wines, the impact of barrel aging before the “prise de mousse” on the aging potential of Champagne base wines has not been studied so far. In the present study, the oxidative stability and related molecular fingerprints of Chardonnay Champagne base wines were reported after 1 year of on lees ageing in new oak barrels for two consecutive vintages. Regardless of the vintage, on lees ageing in new oak barrels improved the wines’ oxidative stability estimated by DPPH assay at 1 year, while UHPLC-Q-ToF-MS molecular profiling showed clear chemical modifications according to the ageing period. Oak wood molecular ellagitannins followed a linear extraction during barrel ageing for both vintages. However, the wines’ antioxidant metabolome composed by antiradical and nucleophilic compounds clearly appeared vintage- and barrel-aging dependent. These results enrich the understanding of white wines antioxidant metabolome and improve the knowledge of the ageing potential of Chardonnay Champagne base wines by integrating vintage- and barrel-ageing effects.
