In contemporary philosophy of mind, understanding others is often presented as an activity of attributing mental states to agents or mindreading – the central question being then how to access their minds. The paper argues that this pervasive approach should be rejected, in favour of the view along which identifying an action comes from exercising conceptual skills acquired through being inserted into shared practices characterizing a social world. Examining the conditions of their acquisition then sheds new light on the semantics of psychological concepts as well as on the roots of misunderstanding.

RESUMO O anquiloblefáro filiforme congênito é uma rara anomalia congênita, caracterizada por uma fusão palpebral, parcial ou completa, cuja incidência é de 4,4 por 100 mil recém-nascidos. Normalmente, o anquiloblefáro filiforme congênito constitui uma malformação solitária, de ocorrência esporádica, no entanto, pode estar associado a outras malformações. O pediatra possui papel imprescindível para observar as alterações clínicas do recém-nascido e dar orientação para o tratamento adequado. O objetivo deste estudo foi relatar o caso de recém-nascido de termo que teve diagnóstico precoce de anquiloblefáro filiforme congênito associado a outras malformações congênitas, tendo desfeito as aderências em procedimento cirúrgico oportuno, evitando-se a evolução para futuras complicações visuais do paciente.

Abstract Objectives: to evaluate the association between the time to initiate the first skin-to-skin contact (SSC) and the daily practice time with the rates of late-onset sepsis in newborns ≤1,800g. Methods: a multicentric cohort study was carried out at the neonatal units located in three Brazilian geographic regions. The SSC time was recorded in individual files by the hospital staff and the newborn’s parents. Maternal and neonatal data were obtained from medical records and through questionnaires applied to the mothers. Data analysis was carried out using a tree algorithm classification, which divided the data set into mutually exclusive subsets that best described the variable response. Results: 405 newborns participated in the study, with an average of 31.3 ± 2.7 weeks and 1,412g (QR=1,164-1,605g) as a median birth weight. The first SSC was carried out within 137 hours of life (≤5.7 days) was associated with a lower rate of late sepsis (p=0.02) for newborns who underwent daily SSC of 112.5 to 174.7 min/day (1.9 to 2.9h/day), with a reduction in the sepsis rate from 39.3% to 27.5%. Furthermore, the duration of SSC >174.7min/day (>2.9h/day) was relevant (p1,344g, with a reduction in this rate from 24.1% to 6%. Conclusions: SSP has been proven to be significant in reducing late-onset sepsis rates in preterm newborns, especially when carried out in a timely manner (≤5.7 days) and prolonged (>2.9h/day).

El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) plays a very important role in modulating rainfall variability in South America. Although the effects of conventional ENSO are well known, there are significant variations in rainfall patterns when sea surface temperature anomalies manifest over the different regions along the equatorial Pacific, namely, Niño 3 (East), Niño 3 and Niño 4 (Mix), and Niño 4 (Central) ENSO. This work aims to analyze the variability of precipitation in southeastern South America associated with different types of El Niño (EN). For this, composite analyzes of precipitation, winds at low and high levels, vertical velocity and geopotential height were carried out. The results indicate that the rainfall pattern associated with Eastern Pacific (EP) El Niño shows the classic features expected from EN described in previous literature, i.e., a stronger and well-defined positive precipitation anomaly over southeast South America, while Central Pacific (CP) El Niño shows weaker and even an opposite sign over the region. Mix (MX) El Niño events present a spatial pattern of precipitation anomalies similar to EP El Niño events, but with lower intensity in the study area. The heterogeneity of EN-related precipitation effects results from a change in large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns: the Walker cell in the tropics, the Rossby waves in the extratropics, and the circulation of low and high-level jet streams. EP El Niño events feature a configuration similar to the South American Low-Level Jet, the strengthening of the subtropical jet, better structured Rossby waves and the Pacific-South America pattern. These characteristics are observed in MX El Niños, but in a weaker way compared to EP El Niños. CP El Niño events, on the other hand, present a weakening and spatial displacement of the aforementioned conditions, which is reflected in negative precipitation anomalies in most seasons. Thus, more significant rainfall variations are noted between the EP El Niños and CP El Niños, with a predominance of positive and negative rainfall anomalies in the study area, respectively.

O presente artigo é resultante de pesquisas que vimos realizando no âmbito de um projeto mais amplo, que objetiva investigar componentes territoriais de processos educativos de crianças na região metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro (RMRJ), mais especificamente na cidade de Niterói, bem como a produção de condições de Educabilidade (Freire, 1996) de crianças de classes populares urbanas em diferentes redes educacionais da região investigada. Nessa perspectiva, a temática da infância e cidade vem sendo estudada por nós em diálogo com a teoria dos campos de Bourdieu (2007), nos convocando a pensar intercessões com os Estudos Sociais da Infância e o campo da Educação Popular (Tavares, 2015). Nosso objetivo é buscar argumentos para provocar deslocamentos no campo conceitual, político e pedagógico da educação da pequena infância, que possam romper com o caráter majoritariamente escolar da educação das infâncias, investigando-as e inserindo-as na vida cotidiana da cidade na qual vivem e deveriam crescer com dignidade e acesso aos seus direitos fundamentais (Santos, 1996).

O artigo narra histórias de vida de processos de escolarização de infâncias pertencentes a uma família de classe popular, moradora da região rural do RS, nos anos 70 e os dispositivos de resistência ao abandono escolar ao concluir a quarta série, última série de escolarização, na ocasião. Toma como referenciais teórico-metodológicos abordagens narrativas (auto)biográficas e histórias de vida. Os objetivos do trabalho são: (i) refletir sobre o cotidiano escolar dessas infâncias para repensar os múltiplos significados da avaliação e da reprovação como ato de resistência familiar para permanecer na escola; (ii) narrar para registrar e entender as estruturas econômico-políticas de poder que estão por trás da inexistência histórica do Estado na oferta de educação para as infâncias populares da zona rural; e (iii) a resistência das crianças que erram para (re)provar, contra as determinações sociais de um Estado que deveria cuidar, ofertar e promover a permanência das crianças na escola. Em síntese, busca-se problematizar, refletir e ressignificar experiências de reprovação escolar, atentas à reprodução de inúmeras desigualdades sociais que atravessam o cotidiano de vida de crianças e famílias de classes populares, com vistas a ressignificá-las em uma perspectiva transformadora.

Iniciamos esse escrito compartilhado, ainda sobre os impactos da travessia do querido Carlos Rodrigues Brandão, em 11 de julho de 2023, portanto há menos de um mês. Para nós, “as Teresas”, como carinhosamente Carlos Brandão se referia a nós duas nos encontros do Grupo de Trabalho (GT) de Educação Popular da Anped, ou em intercâmbios do mesmo GT, em cidades e universidades distintas, foi transformador sermos afetadas por suas palavras, seu olhar, sua humanidade. E era sempre uma alegria encontrá-lo, revê-lo, com a sua voz mansa e seu sorriso miúdo, matreiro, sendo Carlos Brandão um dos homens mais gentis e envolventes que conhecemos.

Este artigo é fruto de estudos e debates realizados por pesquisadores e pesquisadoras do Grupo de Estudos e Pesquisa Infâncias, Formação de Professores e Diversidade Cultural (Gifordic) acerca de questões éticas e epistemológicas presentes na pesquisa com crianças. O texto busca problematizá-las diante dos procedimentos teóricos e metodológicos adotados em investigações realizadas pelo Gifordic no campo da Educação Infantil, discutindo trabalhos que abordam o direito à cidade de crianças que vivem e produzem suas educabilidades em periferias urbanas, especialmente na cidade de São Gonçalo/RJ. Pensamos ser necessário aprofundar a concepção da ética nas pesquisas com crianças como uma experiência de conhecimento.

Social interaction involves processing semantic and emotional information. Here the authors show that in the macaque monkey lateral and superior temporal sulcus, cortical activity is enhanced in response to species-specific vocalisations predicted by matching face or social visual stimuli but inhibited when vocalisations are incongruent with the predictive visual context.

Purpose: The data concerning long-term follow-up and outcomes of penetrating trauma are poorly detailed in the literature. The main objective of our study was to analyze the hospital and extra-hospital follow-up of penetrating trauma victims and to evaluate the late complications and long-term consequences of these traumas. Methods: This work was a retrospective longitudinal monocentric observational study conducted at Laveran Military Hospital, from January 2007 to January 2017. All patients hospitalized for gunshot wound or stab wound management during this period were identified via a retrospective systematic query in the hospital information system using the ICD-10 codes. Epidemiological data, traumatism characteristics, hospital management, follow-up and traumatism consequences (i.e., persistent disability) were analyzed. To improve evaluation of traumatism long-term consequences, extra-hospital follow-up data from general physicians (GP) were collected by phone call. During this interview, 9 closed questions were asked to the GP. The survey evaluated: the date of the last consultation related to injury with the GP, the specific follow-up carried out by the GP, traumatism consequences, and recurrence of traumatism. Descriptive, univariate and multivariate with regression analysis were used for statistical analysis. Results: A total number of 165 patients were included. Median (Q1, Q3) of hospital follow-up was 28 (4, 66) days. One hundred one patients (61.2%) went to their one-month consultation at hospital. GP follow-up was achieved for 76 patients (55.2%). Median (Q1, Q3) of GP follow-up was 47 (21, 75) months. Twenty-four patients (14.5%) have been totally lost to follow up. The overall follow-up identified 54 patients (32.7%) with long-term consequences, 20 being psychiatric disorders and 30 organic injuries. Organic consequences were mainly peripheral nerve damages (n = 20; 12.1%). Most of the psychiatric consequences were diagnosed during GP follow-up (n = 14; 70%). Seventeen cases (10.3%) of recurrence were found and late mortality occurred in 4 patients (2.4%). High injury severity score, older age and gunshot wound were significantly linked to long-term consequences. Data collection and analysis were carried out in accordance with MR004 reference methodology. Conclusion: This study showed a high rate of long-term consequences among patients managed for penetrating injury. If all organic lesions are diagnosed during hospital follow-up and jointly managed by hospital and extra-hospital physicians, most socio-psychiatric consequences were detected and followed by extra-hospital workers. However, for half of the patients, the extra-hospital follow-up could not be assessed. Thus, these consequences are very probably underestimated. It appears imperative to strengthen the compliance and adherence of these patients to the care network. Awareness and involvement of medical, paramedical teams and GP role seems essential to screen and manage these consequences.

Objective: To evaluate the association between dose of skin-to-skin contact (SSC) per day and initiation time with the occurrence of deaths in newborns with weight up to 1800g. Method: Multicentric cohort in five Brazilian neonatal units, including newborns with a birth weight of ≤1800g. The time of SSC was registered in individual file, by the team or family during the hospitalization. Maternal and newborn data were obtained through questionnaires applied to mothers and in medical records. Classification Tree was used for data analysis. Results: The performance of the first SSC after 206h was significantly associated with death (p = 0.02). Although there was no association between SSC/day and death (p = 0.09), the number of deaths among those who performed more than 146.9 minutes/day was lower (3;1.5%) than among those who performed this practice for a shorter time (13;6.4%), a fact considered of great clinical importance. Early and late infections present statistically significant associations with the outcome. The chance of death was equal to zero when there was no early infection in the group with the longest duration of SSC. This probability was also equal to zero in the absence of late sepsis for the group with less than 146.9 minutes/day of SSC. Conclusions: The first SSC before 206 hours of life is recommended in order to observe a reduction in the risk of neonatal death. Staying in SSC for more than 146.9 min/day seems to be clinically beneficial for these neonates mostly when it was associated with the absence of infection.

Resumo Objetivo Descrever o início, duração, local e quem realiza o contato pele a pele em unidades neonatais brasileiras. Métodos Estudo multicêntrico descritivo, longitudinal, realizado de maio de 2018 a março de 2020, em cinco unidades neonatais referência para o Método Canguru no Brasil, que incluiu recém-nascidos com peso até 1800g. As características maternas e dos recém-nascidos foram coletadas em prontuários e entrevistas. A prática do contato pele a pele era registrada em cartões anexados ao leito, preenchidos pela equipe e pelos pais. A análise ocorreu por meio de estatística descritiva. Resultados Foram incluídos 405 recém-nascidos, 51,4% do sexo masculino, mediana de idade gestacional de 31,4 semanas e de peso ao nascimento de 1.412g. Em relação ao tempo de realização do contato pele a pele, a mediana da frequência do contato diário foi de 1,5 vezes (IIQ: 1,2 - 2,4), o tempo/dia de 147 min/dia (IIQ: 106,7 - 263,0) e a realização do primeiro contato aos cinco dias de vida (IIQ:4,0-8,0). O maior tempo de contato/dia foi realizado pelas mães, com mediana de 137,8 min/dia (IIQ:95,6-232,1) e a segunda etapa do Método Canguru, Unidade de Cuidados Intermediários Canguru, foi o local onde se realizou por maior tempo o contato, com mediana de 184,4 min/dia (IIQ:124,7-455,4). Conclusão Nas unidades avaliadas, o contato pele a pele é praticado de forma intermitente, poucas vezes por dia, predominantemente pelas mães e com maior tempo de exposição na segunda etapa. É necessário buscar meios que possibilitem mais encontros entre mãe/pai-filho e que dê condições de maior permanência dos genitores no hospital.

Escrito en tiempos pandémicos, socializamos en el artículo los diálogos del Grupo Voces de la Educación con los movimientos docentes latinoamericanos que realizan investigaciones desde la escuela y la comunidad. Defendemos la pluralidad, diversidad y potencia de tales experiencias en la producción de otros procesos formativos, que nos llaman a la construcción de solidaridades necesarias para afrontar la barbarie de los tiempos actuales.

Este texto é decorrente do Seminário “Direito à Educação e as Infâncias Esquecidas: que futuro?”, que faz parte dos seminários “O futuro começa agora: pesquisa e pós-graduação em educação, ajudando a pensar o Brasil”, promovidos pela Associação Nacional de Pós-graduação e Pesquisa em Educação (Anped), ao longo do ano de 2022. Para abordar o tema, contamos com a participação de três pesquisadoras de diferentes grupos de trabalho da ANPEd e que se dedicam a discutir as infâncias a partir de diferentes perspectivas: na cidade, especialmente nas comunidades cariocas, as crianças indígenas, a literatura africana e afro-brasileira para as crianças.

Apresentação.

Introduction: Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Support can be provided by the arts. Objective: The aim of the study was to explore the experiences of patients with depressive symptoms after a circus performance. Methods: A qualitative research study using a phenomenological approach was carried out. The design was approved by an ethics committee. Volunteers were referred by general practitioners to an ambulatory cultural program and were invited to express their experience throughout interviews that were analyzed with the interpretative phenomenological analysis method. Results: Twelve patients participated in the interviews. The effect on the patient was linked to interactions with the performance. It was an effective way of socializing for patients. The show offered patients distance from their daily difficulties. The circus provided specific elements as a resource for patient empowerment. The experience lived by patients during a circus performance is a cognitive phenomenon inducing an influence on the spectator with depressive symptoms. A beneficial effect depended on the artistic content selected, the support offered by the organization operator, and the medical orientation. Conclusions: The observations characterized the emotional reception of a circus show among people. This study invites further exploration of the impact of circus art on the quality of life of patients with depressive symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
