Background: No previous study has shown that the volume of calcium score is useful for evaluating the aorta when performing a partial clamp (PC). The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of different clamping strategies during off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (OPCAB), in terms of the incidence of postoperative stroke using the calcium score of the ascending aorta. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 339 patients, who underwent isolated OPCAB between August 2013 and March 2021. There were two groups of patients, depending on the procedure. A PC was used for proximal anastomoses in 130 (38.3%) patients. A clampless proximal facilitating anastomotic device (CFD) was used in 107 (31.5%) patients. We prescribed preoperative CT for all patients, and the Agatston score was used. Results: The calcium score significantly was higher in the CFD group than in the PC group (29.7 ± 66.5 vs. 1819.8 ± 2391.5, < 0.001). The number of distal anastomoses and operative time were not significantly different between the two groups. There was no mortality and three strokes occurred at the 30-day follow up. Two strokes occurred in the PC group (1.5%) and one in the CFD group (0.9%), which was not significantly different (P = 0.98). Conclusion: A PC does not increase postoperative stroke incidence compared with a CFD, when utilizing calcium score evaluation in OPCAB.

Oxygen storage materials (OSMs) composed of transition metals are promising in the field of environment protection and energy conversion. In this study, we synthesized LaNi1–xAlxO3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1.0) solid solutions with a rhombohedral perovskite structure and investigated the effect of Al substitution on their structural stability and oxygen release rate. X-ray diffraction measurements and thermogravimetric analysis revealed that Ni-containing LaNi1–xAlxO3 released/stored oxygen atoms topotactically and reversibly via the Ni3+ ↔ Ni2+ redox reaction. LaNiO3 decomposed into La2O3 and Ni0 at 470 °C in a reducing atmosphere (H2). However, Al-substituted LaNi1–xAlxO3 maintained their perovskite structure even at high temperatures (>800 °C for 0.6 ≤ x ≤ 1.0). The high structural stability of these compounds can be attributed to the suppression of oxygen vacancy ordering. Although minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB) is a less invasive procedure, internal thoracic artery (ITA) harvesting is difficult. A 65-year-old woman was advised to undergo MIDCAB for recurrent in-stent restenosis. We harvested the ITA using three-dimensional endoscopy without robotics and determined the scope position using enhanced computed tomography. We changed the camera installation between the wound and the camera port, according to the harvesting site with a harmonic scalpel using the skeletonized technique. We harvested the ITA from the subclavian vein level superiorly to the xyphoid process level inferiorly.

Herein, we report on the synthesis of Ce0.5Zr0.5-xTixO2 oxygen storage materials prepared via a solution combustion method. Ce0.5Zr0.4Ti0.1O2 showed an outstanding oxygen storage capacity (1310 μmol-O per g) at 200 °C compared to conventional κ-Ce2Zr2O8 (650 μmol-O per g) due to its cation ordering and the formation of weakly bound oxygen atoms induced by Ti substitution.

Cation-ordered κ-Ce2Zr2O8 exhibits a high oxygen storage/release capacity (OSC); however, the cation-ordered phase transforms into a cation-disordered phase during high-temperature calcination, thereby decreasing the OSC. Ti substitution in Ce0.5Zr0.4Ti0.1O2 facilitates the formation of a cation-ordered structure compared to the conventional κ-Ce2Zr2O8, which requires a high-temperature reduction treatment to obtain an ordered structure. In this study, the thermal stabilities of Ce0.5Zr0.4Ti0.1O2 and κ-Ce2Zr2O8 are compared. Powder X-ray diffraction reveals that the onset temperature for the cation disordering of Ce0.5Zr0.4Ti0.1O2 (700 ​°C) is lower than that of κ-Ce2Zr2O8 (1000 ​°C). Furthermore, scanning transmission electron microscopy suggests that the cation disordering of Ce0.5Zr0.4Ti0.1O2 is induced by the high mobility of Ti within the crystal lattice; thus, the OSC decreases and κ-Ce2Zr2O8 exhibits a higher thermal stability than Ce0.5Zr0.4Ti0.1O2. Hence, Ti substitution facilitates the formation of a cation-ordered structure; however, it stimulates cation disordering that lowers the OSC and reduces thermal stability.

Two novel high-pressure polymorphs of lanthanum oxyhydride have been successfully predicted and stabilized under pressure. When reacted at 3 GPa, the fluorite structure of LaHO with anion-centered tetrahedral (HLa4/OLa4) geometry is transformed to the PbCl2-type structure involving coordination number increase of H- to five (HLa5 square pyramids). Upon further application of pressure to 5 GPa, LaHO changed into the anti Fe2P-type structure. Interestingly, the 5 GPa phase contains tetrahedral HLa4 and square-pyramidal OLa5 geometry, meaning coordination switching, as confirmed by ab initio calculations. The structural analysis shows that this unprecedented phenomenon is enabled by higher compressibility of hydride anion and emphasizes its potential in the search for new high-pressure forms of hydride-based mixed anion materials.
