This thesis explores how the Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) network may constitute a form of sustainable tourism on the Baltic Island of Gotland, Sweden. To do this, I narrate my own personal journey as a WWOOF volunteer trying to find my way as an organic farmer, in an autoethnographic account of my experience at Tjeldervik Gård during the spring and summer of 2023. In the account, I make observations concerning economic, environmental, and social/cultural sustainability, focusing especially on my interpretations. In this way, I hope to shed more light on WWOOF from the perspective of sustainable tourism studies, and to contribute by sharing one of few first-hand accounts as a WWOOF volunteer reflecting on more established knowledge. 2.14.0.0, 2.14.0.0

Södra Gotland (Storsudret) är ett av de mest utsatta områdena i Sverige när det kommer till torka under somrarna. Trots stora mängder nederbörd har jordbrukare problem med bevattning då öns geologi påverkar lagringen av vatten i form av grundvatten negativt. Vilket beror på att berggrunden består främst av kalk, märgel och märgelsten. Dålig tillgång till vatten kombinerat med långa och varma somrar har medfört att skörden minskat markant under de senaste åren. Bevattningstekniker som används i dagsläget är inte bra på att utnyttja vatten på ett hållbart och effektivt sätt. Dessutom har kostnaderna ökat för många jordbrukare på Gotland med avseende på de ökande elpriserna. Bevattning kräver el och vissa bönder har exempelvis inte tillgång till el vid sina åkrar och måste därmed dra el vilket ökar kostnaderna markant. Behovet av mer resurseffektiva och hållbara bevattningstekniker är stort och något som behöver undersökas mer djupgående. Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka ifall ett automatiserat bevattningssystem som drivs av solenergi faktiskt är möjligt att implementera. Detta utifrån olika kriterier såsom kostnad, energianvändning, skördemängd, klimatpåverkan och vattenanvändning. Därefter jämföra mot ett mer konventionellt system som används i dagsläget och därmed undersöka vilka skillnader det finns. Det var två system som valdes i studien. System 1 var ett potentiellt automatiserad rampbevattningssystem och system 2 ett konventionellt rampbevattningssystem. Båda systemen sattes in i verklighetsbaserade scenario (en åker i södra Gotland) för att få en mer realistisk överblick. Därefter användes en multikriterieanalys för att jämföra båda systemen mot varandra utifrån valda kriterier. Sist av allt användes en SWOT-analys för att sammanknyta all resultat som togs fram i studien. Resultatet visade att det är i teorin möjligt att bygga ett helt automatiserat bevattningssystem so, The southern part of Gotland (Storsudret) is one of the most exposed areas in Sweden when it comes to drought during the summers. Despite large amounts of rainfall, farmers have problems with irrigation as the island’s geology negatively affects the storage of water in the form of groundwater. Poor access to water combined with long and hot summers has meant that the harvest has decreased significantly in recent years. Irrigation techniques used today are not good at using water sustainably and efficiently. In addition, costs have increased for many farmers in Gotland concerning the increasing electricity prices. Irrigation requires electricity and some farmers, for example, do not have access to electricity in their fields and thus have to get electricity, which increases costs significantly. The need for more resource-efficient and sustainable irrigation techniques is great and something that needs to be investigated in more depth. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether an automated irrigation system powered by solar energy is realistically possible to implement. This was based on various criteria such as cost, energy requirements, yield, etc., and then compare against a more conventional system that is currently used and thus examines what differences there are. Two systems were chosen in the study. System one was a potentially automated irrigation system and system two was a conventional ramp irrigation system. Both systems were put into a reality-based scenarios (a field in southern Gotland) to get a more realistic overview. Multi-criteria analysis was then used to compare both systems against each other based on selected criterias. Afterward, a SWOT analysis was also carried out to summarize all the results that were produced in the study. The result showed that it is theoretically possible to build a fully automated irrigation system powered by solar energy and that there are both positive and negative parts to the system com- pared to convent

Den 27 mars 2024 beslutade regeringen att ge Trafikverket i uppdrag att inleda förberedande utredningar och undersökningar för att en framtida reservhamn för Visby hamn ska kunna realiseras snarast möjligt i Kappelshamn på Gotland. Det nya uppdraget följer på ett tidigare regeringsuppdrag från 2023 där Trafikverket utrett förutsättningarna för en reservhamn på Gotland och där Trafikverket kommit fram till att Kappelshamn bedöms ha bäst förutsättningar att på sikt kunna fungera som ett alternativ till Visby hamn för färjetrafik. Senast den 25 juni 2024 ska Trafikverket enligt uppdraget lämna en redovisning av de beräknade kostnaderna. En slutredovisning av uppdraget ska lämnas senast 15 november 2024. Fokus under denna första del av det här uppdraget har varit att genomföra geotekniska undersökningar och ta fram underlag för att kunna göra kostnadsberäkningar för det fortsatta arbetet med att anlägga en reservhamn i Kappelshamn. Utifrån begränsad tillgång till plattformar för borrning kunde de geotekniska undersökningarna inte påbörjas förrän 13 juni 2024. Först när de är genomförda och resultatet har analyserats kommer Trafikverket att ha ett tillräckligt underlag för att kunna precisera kostnaderna för åtgärderna för att anlägga såväl farled som hamnområde. Det har därför inte varit möjligt för Trafikverket att till den 25 juni redovisa preciserade kostnader för farledsåtgärder och åtgärder i hamnområdet. Trafikverket har lämnat en hemställan till regeringen om att få anstånd till slutredovisningen av uppdraget, den 15 november, med att redovisa de preciserade kostnaderna. De kostnader som redovisas i den här rapporten är bedömda kostnader för de utredningar som behöver genomföras innan själva farledsåtgärderna kan påbörjas Trafikverket har även tecknat ett startbeslut som möjliggör för Sjöfartsverket att under augusti påbörja en farledsutredning som bland annat omfattar genomförande av den miljöberedningsprocessen som ska leda fram till tillståndsansökan. To reach the 1.5°C-goal of the Paris Agreement, all sectors have to be involved in the transition. The transport sector poses a considerable challenge regarding sustainable development and, within the sector, road transport contributes to the largest part of emissions in the EU. The development of fuels for heavy-duty vehicles is not as fast as for other types of vehicles. However, approaches combining biomethane and green hydrogen as alternative fuels have gained interest. There are plans to both expand the biogas sector and implementing hydrogen production on Gotland. Therefore, this study examines how two of these approaches, hythane and power-to-methane technology, compare to each other as HDV-fuels on Gotland. A simplified MCA has been conducted to compare the two alternative fuels’ performance against each other based on several criteria. The results show that hythane performed better than power-to-methane in the criteria categories technical performance and feasibility Gotland, while power-to-methane performed better regarding environmental impact. As hythane performed better in a larger number of criteria than biomethane produced through power-to-methane, the results of the study imply that, based on Gotland’s pre-conditions, hythane is preferable as HDV-fuel over using power-to-methane technology. However, prioritization of the criteria is not conducted and further research that includes weighing of the criteria, as well as examines the economic and social factors of the two systems, is required for a sufficient feasibility study.

I denna uppsats undersöktes och analyserades de äldsta individerna i den gropkeramiska stenålderslokalen Ajvide på Gotland. Individernas gravskick och förhållande till den levande populationen, samt huruvida osteologiska patologier orsakade variationer i gravskicket, undersöktes främst via användning av korrespondensanalys (CA). Den äldre delen av Ajvides population har inte undersökts till alls samma grad som med de andra delarna av populationen, och därmed är det relativt okänt hur de äldsta individerna förhåller sig till varandra. Detta är mönster som återspeglas i ett stort antal av populations-studier, och därmed ser vi en ovisshet om huruvida man förhöll sig till de äldre i en population. Via ytterligare och djupare undersökning av de äldre kan däremot deras relation och relevans i en population och kultur upptäckas, och således skapa mer insikt till hur samhället på Ajvide fungerade. Genom att sammanställa individernas osteologiska patologier och deras gravgåvor kunde uppsatsens frågeställningar besvaras., In this essay, the oldest individuals in the Pitted Ware Culture site Ajvide on Gotland were examined and analysed. The burial condition of the individuals and their relation to the living population, as well as whether osteological pathologies caused variations in the burial condition, were investigated primarily through the use of correspondence analysis (CA). The older part of Ajvides population has not been investigated to the same extent as with the older parts of the population, and thus it is relatively unknown how the oldest individuals relate to each other. These are patterns that are reflected in a large number of population studies, and thus we see an uncertainty about whether one related to the elderly in a population. However, via further and deeper investigation of the elderly, their relationship and relevance in a population can be discovered, and thus create more insight into how society at Ajvide functioned. By compiling the osteological pathologies of the individuals and their grave goods, the essay’s questions could be answered.

Branded image of a place is not a new concept. There is a lot of touristic locations that marketise themselves as heritage centres or office areas that present themselves as innovation hubs. The list goes on with post-industrial cities, harbour towns or hipster districts. The problem begins when, by strongly promoting a particular image – through marketisation of space, experiences, history and people - other elements or groups are left in the background. This unique power relationship creates an unequal distribution of resources, leaving those that are ‘invisible’ with no agency and rarely any profit from the promoted economies. Gotland is one of the Sweden’s most branded regions with a few dominant narratives happening at the same time. With its economy strongly focused on tourists and affected by seasonality, Gotland’s marketing is especially prone to put certain groups in the shadow. Therefore, the focus of my project is on the local youth that is currently missing from those narratives. They strongly rely on the existing infrastructure and resources but are not part of the discussion. Through means of ethnographic research project aims to explore youth stories and empower local teenagers by inserting their micro-narratives and needs into the dominant storytelling. In order to achieve this, a design strategy of hacking into narratives was compiled. It explores, using three interventions as an example, how narratives can be hacked through spatial and social means, as well as using seasonality. As the interventions are developed further, the project aims to reflect on a following question: What it means to be included in the storytelling and how that reality could look like in the future?

This thesis compares the health and quality of life between the medieval urban environment of Visby and the rural monastic population of Roma monastery through the examination of osteological remains. For this comparison the bones of two graves of two assumed monks from Roma Monastery have been examined and are compared to previously written osteological reports of material of St. Clemen’s graves. In total five individuals from St. Clemens of two different authors have been used for this thesis. The material from Roma has been examined after sex, age, height, pathological changes, and activity markers. The finds of the study suggests the monks performed heavy manual labour and had worse health than compared to the inhabitants of Visby., Denna uppsats undersöker och jämför hälsan och livskvalitén hos den medeltida urbana befolkningen i Visby gentemot den rurala klosterbefolkningen från Roma kloster genom skeletala kvarlevor. För jämförelsen har benen från två gravar av två antagna munkar från Roma kloster jämförts med tidigare publicerade osteologiska rapporter av material från S:t Clemens gravar. Totalt fem individer från S:t Clemens av två olika författare har använts för denna uppsats. Materialet från Roma har undersökts efter kön- och åldersbedömning, kroppslängdberäkning, patologiska förändringar och aktivitetsspår. Resultatet av undersökningen visar att munkarna utförde hårt arbete och hade en sämre hälsa än Visbys invånare.

This thesis seeks to gain an understanding the role of the warrior in the Gotlandic society during the Roman iron age and the Migration Period, and to gain further knowledge of the development and evolution of the Gotlandic weapon grave, in terms of grave goods, burial practises, and expressions of military hierarchy. Through the methodology of correspondence analysis, a relatively clear development of the weapon grave can be traced: from a retinue-based system of military organisation in the Early Roman Iron Age, to a less defied hierarchy among the graves during the Late Roman Iron Age and Migration Period. This is manifested by a decreasing use of high-status objects, more homogenous grave inventories, and smaller differences in size and form of burial structures. This development corelates with earlier studies regarding social changes on Gotland, where the Gotlandic society is identified as more egalitarian than other Early Iron Age societies in Scandinavia., Denna Uppsats ämnar bilda en förståelse kring krigarens roll i det gotländska samhället under romersk järnålder och folkvandringstid, samt att öka kunskapen kring de gotländska vapengravarnas utveckling genom att undersöka uppsättningar av gravgåvor, gravpraktiker och uttryck för militär hierarki. Genom en korrespondens-analytisk metodik har en relativt tydlig utveckling av vapengravarna kunnat identifieras. Från ett system som bygger på militära följen under äldre romersk järnålder, till en mindre tydligt definierad hierarki bland gravarna under yngre romersk järnålder och folkvandringstid. Utvecklingen manifesterar sig via en minskning i användningen av statusmarkerande föremål, ett mer homogent gravinventarium, samt mer otydliga skillnader i storlek och utformning av gravkonstruktionerna. Detta korrelerar med tidigare forskning rörande den gotländska samhällsorganisationen, där det gotländska samhället identifieras som mer egalitärt än andra äldre järnålderssamhällen i Skandinavien.

Uppsatsen har analyserat tandhälsan hos 20 vuxna individer med tandsten från medeltida S:t Hans, Visby, med fokus på: tandsten, karies, abscesser, parodontit, emaljhypoplasi och ante mortem tandförlust. I syfte att dra slutsatser om populationens tandhälsa och huruvida tandsten korrelerar med övrig tandhälsa. Resultatet påvisade en population med bristande tandhälsa, där 75 % av individerna hade minst ett kariesangrepp och 19 av 20 hade parodontit. Tandhälsan lär ha resulterat i tandvärk och komplikationer av allmänhälsan för S:t Hans populationen. Varken en negativ eller positiv korrelation mellan karies och tandsten kunde bevisas i materialet. Dock konstaterades att män hade en högre tandstensgrad, medan kvinnor påvisade grövre karies. Det leder till en tolkning om könsskillnader i diet i S:t Hans. Emaljhypoplasier är funna främst hos män. Det underbygger diettolkningen, samt tolkas som en indikation på könsbunden barndoms-mortalitet. Jämförelser med samtida befolkningar utfördes för att ge en vidare inblick i materialet; S:t Hans hade statistiskt fler individer med karies samt mer parodontit. Det kan innebära olika diet på fastlandet och Visby, eller indikera att tandsten leder till försämrad tand-hälsa då samtliga analyserade individer har tandsten., The thesis focuses on the dental health of 20 adult individuals with dental calculus from medieval St. Hans, Visby. The dental health assessments were done with a focus on dental calculus, caries, dental abscesses, periodontitis, enamel hypoplasia and ante mortem tooth loss. The result of the thesis showed a lacking dental health due to a great amount of caries, 75 % of analysed individuals had at least one instance of caries, as well as periodontitis which was found in 19 out of 20 individuals. No clear negative nor positive correlation between dental calculus and caries could be seen in the material. However, men had a higher degree of dental calculus whilst women had more severe cases of caries. This leads to a possible conclusion of differing diets between the sexes. Enamel hypoplasia is found mainly in men, which supports the theory regarding diet and is posed as an indication of sex-bound childhood mortality. St. Hans popu-lation had a greater statistic of individuals with caries than contemporary Swedish populations as well as more periodontitis. This could indicate a bad dental hygiene and dental health amongst the individuals from St. Hans or it could indicate that dental calculus leads to worsened dental health since only individuals with dental calculus were analysed.

Under vikingatiden och medeltiden hade Gotland förmodligen en omfattande tingsorganisation. För Banda ting har Suderting förmodats vara en tingsplats utmed Idån och Fjäle Myr som syntes vara betydelsefulla på Mejer’s 1600-tals karta. Vilken betydelse har våtmarker som Fjäle Myr och vattendrag som Idån haft för tingsorganisationen och kommunikationer i Banda ting under järnålder? Syftet med denna uppsats var att undersöka vattendrag och tingsgränser i Banda ting under järnålder, samt identifiera nätverk och kommunikationsleder. Uppsatsen har utifrån historiskt kartmaterial återskapat vattendrag, våtmarker och gränser. Samt använt rumsliga metodanalyser i GIS av fornlämningar i landskapet. Kommunikationsleder och gränser har studerats med ett teoretiskt ramverk att landskapet, i form av topografi, vattendrag och våtmarker, formar dessa. Resultatet av analysen visar att fornborgar har haft en viktig funktion i att försvara kommunikationsleder, även att nätverk och makt hänger ihop i en bredare tingsorganisation. Vattendrag och våtmarker som Fjäle Myr och Stormyr var farbara och utgjorde ett större kommunikationsnätverk. Samt att tingsgränser har en korrelation till vatten och är möjliga att återskapa med rumsliga analyser., During the Viking Age and the Middle Ages, Gotland likely had an extensive thing organization. Suderting is assumed to be the thing place for Banda, located along Idån and Fjäle Myr which appeared to be significant on Mejer's 17th century map. What significance did wetlands such as Fjäle Myr and waterways such as Idån have for the thing organization and communication during the Iron age in Banda ting? The purpose of this essay was to investigate waterways and boundaries in Banda ting during the Iron Age, also to identify network and communication routes. Based on historical map material, the essay has recreated watercourses, wetlands and borders. As well as used spatial method analyzes in GIS of ancient remains in the landscape. Communication routes and borders have been studied with a theoretical framework that the landscape shapes these in the form of topography, waterways and wetlands. The result of the analysis shows that hill forts have had an important function in defending communication routes, that network and power connect in a wider organization of things. Waterways and wetlands such as Fjäle Myr and Stormyr were navigable and formed a larger communication network. And that thing boundaries have a correlation to water and can be recreated with spatial analyses.

Syftet med undersökningen är att göra en “modell” över hur bronsålderns strandlinje på Gotlands östra kust kan ha sett ut samt att undersöka var rösen finns placerade i landskapet. Undersökningen har haft två teoretiska utgångspunkter, seascape och platsval. Materialet som undersökts i uppsatsen är 508 rösen och 14 gravfält där rösen förekommer, samt de kartor med strandlinjerekonstruktionen som gjorts inom ramen för undersökningen. För att kunna rekonstruera strandlinjen och analysera rösenas placering har en rumslig analys genomförts i QGIS. Den sydligaste delen av ön rekonstruerades till 7,5 m.ö.h. och den nordligaste delen, det vill säga Fårö, rekonstruerades till 12 m.ö.h. vilket gjorde att det var en skillnad på 4,5 meter mellan nord och syd. Studien visade att en majoritet av rösena placerades invid någon form av vatten, att i de norra delarna av ön var frekvensen av mindre rösen större samtidig som östkusten hade flest rösen med en diameter över 20 meter., The purpose of the thesis is to make a "model" of what the Bronze Age shoreline on Gotland's eastern coast might have looked like and to investigate where the cairns are located in the landscape. The survey had two theoretical starting points, seascape, and site selection. The material examined in the essay is 508 cairns and 14 burial fields where the cairns occur, as well as the maps with the shoreline reconstruction made within the framework of the survey. To reconstruct the shoreline and analyse the location of the cairns, a spatial analysis has been carried out in QGIS. The southernmost part of the island was reconstructed to 7.5 m.a.s.l. and the northernmost part, i.e. Fårö, was reconstructed to 12 m.a.s.l. which meant that there was a difference of 4.5 meters between north and south. The study showed that most of the cairns were placed next to some form of water. It was also seen, that in the northern parts of the island, there were generally smaller cairns, while the east coast had the most cairns with a diameter of over 20 meters.

In this thesis, three individuals were analysed from the medieval church St. Hans in Visby, Sweden. The three individuals were interred within the older graveyard of ‘All-Saints’ Church’. The burial of multiple individuals in a single grave was considered exceptional due to its deviation from standard burial rituals. The archaeological report suggested a familial connection among the buried individuals, with individual 13 initially buried in a wooden coffin, followed by individual 10 laid atop the coffin, and individual 9 subsequently laid atop individual 10. The study focused on non-metric traits, in these three individuals. Non-metric traits of the skeleton encompass features with a presumed genetic basis, which can also be influenced by external environmental factors and internal physiological conditions. These traits, categorised into dental, cranial, and post-cranial traits, were typically employed to investigate population affinities and aid in forensic identification. However, their genetic nature also can render them useful for examining familial relationships. Despite their potential, utilising non-metric traits to ascertain familial relationships posed challenges. These challenges included data quality, stratigraphic association, and data gaps in the St. Hans material. Understanding these constraints was crucial for determining the reliability of non-metric traits as a tool for familial analysis., I denna uppsats har tre individer analyserats från den medeltida kyrkan S:t Hans i Visby, Sverige. De tre individerna var gravsatta i den äldre begravningsplatsen som tillhörde Allhelgonakyrkan. Begravningen av flera personer i en och samma grav betraktades som exceptionell på grund av avvikelsen från standardbegravningsritualer. Den arkeologiska rapporten föreslog en släktskaplig koppling mellan de begravda individerna, där individ 13 initialt begravdes i en träkista, följt av individ 10 som lades ovanpå kistan, och individ 9 som därefter lades ovanpå individ 10. Studien fokuserade på icke-metriska egenskaper hos dessa tre individer. Shore displacement has largely affected both the natural landscape and the humans within. This is especially true for Västergarn parish on Gotland, where low-lying plains make up large parts of the domain. Yet, the land–sea interaction of Västergarn, has not been studied closely for a long time. Through a comprehensive study, as well as a reexamination, of different sources and materials, this study aims to shed new light on the spatial distribution and chronology of Västergarn. To understand this, we need to get a scope of the extent of the sea. Previous research (e.g. Ilves & Darmark 2011; Mikołajczyk et al. 2015) has showed that phosphate analysis may help indicate the position of former shorelines. How can this, methodologically, be applied to phosphate-mapping carried out well over 50 years ago? This thesis does not aim to completely answer this question, but rather to analyze what went into determining a shore-level for 1000 AD during earlier research (e.g. Lundström 1979, 1981). Moreover, this study aims to critically examine the interplay between historical shore-levels and the built world within Västergarn. The Västergarn defensive wall and Paviken bay constitute the two main areas of study, owing to the pursuit of understanding the interplay between these two sites. Västergarn cannot be fully understood without also including the Kronholmen peninsula (formerly island, as the name suggests), why some attention is also directed towards this area., Strandförskjutningen har till stor del påverkat både naturlandskapet och människorna inom. Detta stämmer i synnerhet för Västergarns socken på Gotland, där i princip hela området är att betrakta som synnerligen låglänt. Ändå har relationen mellan land och hav i Västergarn, inte utforskats närmare på länge. Genom att inkludera och ompröva ett flertal olika källor och material, syftar denna studie till att på nytt belysa Västergarns rumsliga fördelning och kronologi. Tidigare forskning (se Ilves & Darmark 2011; Mikołajczyk et al. 2015) har visat på att analys fosfatvärden kan bära med sig insikt i forna strandlinjenivåer. Hur kan denna kunskap metodologiskt tillämpas på fosfatkarteringar som genomfördes för mer än 50 år sedan? Denna uppsats syftar inte till att fullständigt besvara denna fråga, men däremot att närma sig vad som legat till grund för att fastställa en strandnivå för 1000 e.Kr. under tidigare forskning (se Lundström 1979, 1981). Huvudfokus för denna studie är att kritiskt granska samspelet mellan historiska strandlinjenivåer och bebyggelse i Västergarn. Västergarnsvallen och Paviken utgör, i strävan efter att förstå relationen mellan dessa två platser, de huvudsakliga studieområdena. Västergarn kan dock inte förstås till fullo utan att även blicka mot halvön Kronholmen (tidigare ö, som namnet vittnar om), varför en viss uppmärksamhet också riktas mot detta område.

The article deals with how a 17th-century building in Visby, the Burmeister House, has been used as a site of memory since the end of the 19th century. The theoretical starting point is the concept by the French historian Pierre Nora on how historians actively create sites of memory (les lieux de mémoire). We can regard the house as a site of memory to try and understand the historical significance previously ascribed to it and how the house is seen today. A site can be conserved or preserved through alteration, which emphasizes a selection of its characteristics that become tangible expressions of abstract narratives about the national or local community. This is the case with the Burmeister House, which, after being bought by Visby council in 1904, went from being a private home to a public museum, tourist office, restaurant, and reading room, later becoming a listed building and a visitor centre for the World Heritage Site. Hand in hand with the house becoming a place that provided experiences by way of guided tours, and where various kinds of merchandise were sold, the building underwent a number of major renovations. These were designed to reinforce the impression of a well-preserved merchant’s home from the early period of Swedish control of Gotland. Remainders of the post-18th-century history of the house can be seen in various places. The building has a century-old history as a tourist centre and travel agency, yet we can get a glimpse of this narrative only by way of various “forgotten” objects. An increasingly respectful attitude to the building’s 17th-century wall paintings, viewed through the lens of cultural history, led to the tourist centre moving out of the house in 1993. At the beginning of the 21st century, the building briefly functioned as a visitor centre for the newly designated World Heritage Site of the Hanseatic town of Visby. In Rone church on Gotland there was once a runic inscription scratched into the inner wall of chancel (G 54C). The inscription is now lost, but it was documented and published by Hugo Pipping in the year 1900. According to Pipping the meaning was Ráð rún [e]pti[r] harm-b-raðum “Read the inscription after the sad lines”. Little attention has been paid to the inscription since then, but in 2002 Evert Salberger and Thor­gunn Snædal independently of each other came up with new interpretations of this inscription, partly based on OWN word material. Salberger suggests “Read the runes after mischiefs” comprising a counterpart to the word harmbrǫgðom known from Atlakviða 15, whereas Snædal assumed a word harmbrāðr with the meaning ‘quick to grieve’. The present study is based on the discovery that the same text is recorded also in a plaster inscription in Lye church on Gotland (G 104Eg). By comparing this inscription with the documentation of the runes in Rone (a drawing and some photographs) it is possible to reconstruct the original text, which seems be: Rāð rūnir ok blīg(a), armbr, augum! “Read the runes and stare, wretched, with the eyes!”. According to this suggestion the inscriptions contain a direct counterpart to the OWN expression blígja augum “stare with a fixed gaze”. Pingsten 1975 hittade några skolungdomar vikingahövdingen Stavars skatt. Under lång tid hade många letat. När skatten väl kom i dagen var det lite av en slump. Fyndet blev en sensation och ledde till att järnåldersbyn Stavgard i Burs socken på sydöstra Gotland byggdes. Skatten finns idag utställd på Gotlands Museum. I spetsen för de som skapade Stavgard fanns den visionära läraren, smeden och samhällsbyggaren Harriet Löwenhielm. I boken skildras hennes liv och tankevärld och hur hon grep in i både människors och Gotlands utveckling. Boken berättar också om de som Haggan bodde ihop med i ett kollektiv vid gården Flors i Burs. De var lärare, hantverkare och kulturarbetare, engagerade i tidens freds- och kvinnorörelser. På lägerskolan Stavgard utformade de en alternativ pedagogik, som också nästlade sig in i den då nya grundskolan. De kallade det ”görandets pedagogik”. Man lär sig med händerna, sen förstår man med huvudet. Vi följer med skolbarnen till Stavgard när de gör upp eld med eldstål och allt annat som krävs för att de ska överleva ute i skogen på järnåldersvis. Stavgard var föregångaren bland fornbyar i Sverige och har idag utvecklats till ett populärt besöksmål.

I mitten av 1980-talet sköt ekologisk odling fart på Gotland. Då hade Bengt och Iris Cedergren vid Flors i Burs redan odlat giftfritt i ett par decennier. Grannarna tyckte inte de var kloka, men pionjärer för ekologisk odling på Gotland blev de. På ett sätt började alltsammans med att två unga finskor åren efter andra välrldskriget längtade bort från det krigshärjade Finland.

Hösten 2021 gjorde en grupphobbydetektorister sitt livs fynd när de sökte av ett fält i Kirimäe, en by i västra Estland, straxt sydost om Haapsalu (Hapsal) (Fig. 1). Där fann de nämligen en silverskatt, bestående av inte mindre än 124 mynt, silvertenar, smycken och annat ornamenterat silver, totalt 913,3 gram. Platsen undersöktes därefter av det estniska Riksantikvarieämbetet (Karro 2021) som konstaterade att inga spår av en fyndbehållare kunde ses utan att fyndet spridits över några tiotal kvadratmeter på en åker, intill en förhistorisk miljö med bland annat ett par gravhögar. Fyndområdet är något förhöjt i terrängen och jorden mörkfärgad, men inga typiska boplatsfynd eller gravmaterial hittades (keramik, kol, ben eller dylikt), endast några brända granitstenar utan tydlig kontext. Föremålens spridning och skador på dem visar att det sannolikt handlar om ett fynd som överplöjts och då spridits mekaniskt av plogen – okänt när, och om det skett vid ett eller flera tillfällen. Vid en efterundersökning år 2022 återfanns ytterligare 92 mynt samt fler tenar och föremål, vilka förts samman med de övriga föremålen i Estlands historiska museum (Eesti Ajaloomuuseum/EAM) under inventarienumren AM 41 234 och 41 261. Föremålen i fyndet (nu 216 mynt,19–20 tackor och nio ornament eller fragment av sådana) visar sammantaget att det deponerats vid någon tidpunkt runt sekelskiftet 1200. Det är följaktligen inte förvånande att fyndets karaktär balanserar mellan de senvikingatida och tidigmedeltida fynden från Östersjöområdet vid den här tiden. Några föremål och drag i Kirimäefyndet har visat sig vara tämligen unika, och fyndet öppnar i ett slag upp ett spektrum av ny kunskap och nya frågor för numismatiker, arkeologer och historiker. Small-scale fisheries (SSF) have a long history on Gotland, the largest island in Sweden and the Baltic Sea. Today they are struggling to survive due to competition from industrial fisheries, other animals, and the reputation of Baltic fish containing high levels of toxins. With topics like authenticity and sustainability becoming increasingly important in the tourism sector, integrating SSF in the destination image and utilising locally caught fish in restaurants shows great potential for Gotland to become a more sustainable destination, offering more authentic experiences to tourists. This study aims to explore the inclusion of SSF and related aspects in Gotland’s destination image through an analysis of websites and Instagram accounts, and how much SSF are included in local restaurants through interviews with restaurant owners. The study highlights the missed opportunities for tourism on Gotland to incorporate SSF and related aspects. In the analysis, it was shown that SSF merely occupied a background role in the destination image. Just as SSF occupy a minor role in Gotland’s destination image, its role in the local gastronomy scene is limited. The restaurant owners highlighted an acute need for education and collaboration to facilitate the potential use of local fish from SSF. If SSF and related aspects were incorporated into Gotland’s tourism, the natural beauty and historical culture could be complemented by living heritage. This could enable tourists to experience more authentic activities or to consume seafood more sustainably, and therefore enhance their experience altogether with the addition of potentially distinguishing Gotland as a destination. Simultaneously, local fishers are uplifted while the health of the delicate ecosystems of the Baltic Sea is supported and improved upon for generations to come.

The purpose of this study is to understand which challenges women politicians on Gotland face and how they perceive themselves in their political work. We aim to highlight existing gender norms and how these translate into challenges within an island setting. This research further highlights the identity work women politicians at a local level engage in. The theoretical frameworks used include feminist political theory, feminist institutionalism, identity, and political identity. The empirical data was gathered through 13 semi-structured interviews with local women politicians on Gotland. Taking on a feminist approach, our study underscores and engages with the complexity of the stories, emotions, and experiences of our participants. Our findings underline several challenges women politicians face, including Part of a quota?, Motherhood and Double standards. Our findings also stress that the notion of femininity, such as motherhood and emotionality, need to be the base for restructuring and reframing current political systems to allow for true gender equality. Additionally, our findings reveal three identity facets, (1) The Holistic Caretaker, (2) The Freedom Fighter, and (3) The Game Player, which women politicians take on depending on the political context and while aiming to navigate through the political landscape. Lastly, we have identified the paradox Women vs Women. Our study sheds light on the intertwined and complex nature of gender related challenges in local politics and reveals the paradoxical nature of women’s attempt to move up the political staircase, while simultaneously trying to challenge pre-existing systemic structures.

Purpose: The thesis investigated how local entrepreneurs in Slite perceive Heidelberg Materials Cement Sverige AB (HMCS) 's upcoming carbon capture storage (CCS) project—the thesis aimed to explore their perceptions of both enthusiasm and concern regarding the forthcoming mega-project in eco-innovation. Method: A case study based on qualitative research consisting of semi-structured interviews. Theory: Stakeholder Theory and Social License to Operate Results: Economic benefits such as job creation and increased local business activity are acknowledged by the entrepreneurs, who are also concerned about environmental impact, especially dust and transport-related pollution. Some entrepreneurs felt that HMCS has decreased its community involvement over time, and there is a need for increased engagement. Communication gaps were evident, and some entrepreneurs were skeptical about the project's benefits versus its potential disruptions. There was optimism about the potential, but entrepreneurs strongly emphasized the urgent need for improved corporate responsibility, better communication, and genuine community engagement. Conclusion: In conclusion, the thesis recommends that HMCS set a robust community engagement strategy for the upcoming CCS project. To achieve this, it will be essential to emphasize transparent communication, mutual feedback procedures, and community benefits such as job creation and infrastructure improvements. Creating a genuine commitment to corporate social responsibility can mitigate the concerns of entrepreneurs and foster trust between HMCS and its stakeholders.

This Bachelor's thesis examines the consequences of Sweden's NATO membership regarding its security and defence policy, with a particular focus on Gotland. Sweden's transition to NATO membership was motivated by escalating geopolitical tensions in Europe due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and especially in the Baltic Sea region. This study employs a qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders in Gotland's military and municipal sectors to assess the strategic, operational and tactical effects of NATO membership. The results indicate that although NATO membership strengthens Sweden's national defence and geopolitical position, its immediate tactical and operational effects on Gotland are limited. The ongoing military development in Gotland, which was initiated before NATO membership, continues to develop with additional support and cooperation opportunities provided by the alliance. The research highlights the strategic necessity of NATO membership for Sweden, which provides increased security guarantees and adapts to broader geopolitical goals. However, the full extent of NATO's influence on Gotland's military development and societal impact requires further investigation given the recency of Sweden's membership on March 7, 2024. This thesis contributes to the academic discussion of geopolitical alliances and provides insights for policy makers in strategic planning and implementation.

This thesis investigates related organizations perceptions and coordination in response to legal changes governing packaging waste collection (PWC) in Gotland, Sweden, utilizing Sensemaking theory, Interorganizational Coordination (IOC) theory, and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) theory. Through qualitative research methods, including interviews with key participants from public and private sectors involved in waste management, this study explores how individuals from different organizations make sense of and adapt to the new regulatory framework. The research identifies diverse organization views towards the legal changes, highlighting challenges related to ambiguity and clarity in regulatory details. Sensemaking processes influence organizational interpretations of the regulations, shaping their actions and collaborative efforts. IOC dynamics play a crucial role in waste management coordination, with task breakdown and coordination among multiple organizations proving more effective than centralized approaches. CSR illustrates the dilemma of private sectors’ contribution to broader sustainability goals due to competition concern in a market-driven business context. The study underscores the significance of public sector entities in waste management governance compared to private organizations. This research contributes to advancing understanding of waste management policy implementation and coordination dynamics within a regional context, leveraging sensemaking, IOC and CSR theories.

Åren 1861–1862 byggs söder om Visby på Gotland ett kungligt sommarresidens, FRIDHEM, där prinsessan Eugénie (1830–1889) sedan vistas varje sommar. Hon var intresserad av den då nya uppfinningen fotografi och bjöd in fotografer till Fridhem. Till de främsta hörde Bertha Valerius (1824–1895) och Jens Pedersen (1839–1910), som dokumenterade det kungliga sommarlivet på Gotland under 1860-talet. Dessa fotografier spreds även utomlands och väckte intresse för Gotland som turistdestination. Landsarkivet i Visby äger en samling av Pedersens glasplåtar.
