Abstract

Hyperhydration has been demonstrated to improve work capacity and cardiovascular and thermoregulatory functions, enhance orthostatic tolerance, slow or neutralize bone demineralization, and decrease postdive bubble formation. Adding sodium or glycerol to a hyperhydration solution optimizes fluid retention. Sodium and glycerol produce their effect through different physiological mechanisms. If combined into a hyperhydration solution, their impact on fluid retention could potentially be greater than their singular effect. We compared the effect of salt-induced hyperhydration (SIH), glycerol-induced hyperhydration (GIH), and salt + glycerol-induced hyperhydration (SGIH) on fluid balance responses during a 3-hr passive experiment. Using a randomized, crossover, and counterbalanced experiment, 15 young men (22 ± 4 years) underwent three, 3-hr hyperhydration experiments during which they ingested 30 ml/kg fat-free mass (FFM) of water with an artificial sweetener plus either (a) 7.5 g of table salt/L (SIH), (b) 1.4 g glycerol/kg FFM (GIH), or (c) 7.5 g of table salt/L + 1.4 g glycerol/kg FFM (SGIH). After 3 hr, there were no significant differences in plasma volume changes among experiments (SIH: 11.3% ± 9.9%; GIH: 7.6% ± 12.7%; SGIH: 11.3% ± 13.7%). Total urine production was significantly lower (SIH: 775 ± 329 ml; GIH: 1,248 ± 270 ml; SGIH: 551 ± 208 ml) and fluid retention higher (SIH: 1,127 ± 212 ml; GIH: 729 ± 115 ml; SGIH: 1,435 ± 140 ml) with SGIH than either GIH or SIH. Abdominal discomfort was low and not significantly different among experiments. In conclusion, results show that SGIH reduces urine production and provides more fluid retention than either SIH or GIH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

11. Mesure continue de la température rectale : faisabilité et validation de l’utilisation de sondes télémétriques

Abstract

En sciences de l’activité physique, la mesure continue de la température corporelle est utilisée afin d’étudier et comprendre la régulation de la température interne lors de situations engendrant des gains ou des pertes de chaleur corporelle faibles, modérés ou importants (Lim, Byrne et Lee, 2008; Taylor, Tipton et Kenny, 2014). Trois méthodes, toutes associées à des sites anatomiques différents, sont largement utilisées, soit la température œsophagienne, gastro-intestinale et rectale (Byrne et Lim, 2007). La mesure continue de la température rectale à l’aide d’une sonde rectale câblée est limitante et peut être encombrante. L’utilisation d’une sonde télémétrique comme suppositoire pour monitorer la température rectale pourrait contourner certaines limitations. L’idée d’utiliser une sonde télémétrique pour évaluer la température rectale n’est pas nouvelle (Adams, Fox, Fry et MacDonald, 1975; Cheuvront et al., 2009; Ely, Cheuvront, Kenefick et Sawka, 2010; Keatinge et Neild, 1990; Kenefick, et al., 2009; Xu, Karis, Buller et Santee, 2013). Cependant, personne n’a jamais déterminé si cette technique de mesure est valide en tant que suppositoire. Ainsi, le but de ce mémoire est de déterminer si des sondes télémétriques, habituellement utilisées afin de mesurer la température gastro-intestinale, peuvent être utilisées pour mesurer la température rectale de façon valide 1) au repos à une température ambiante tempérée; 2) lors d'une augmentation lente et modérée de la température rectale; 3) lors d'une diminution lente et modérée de la température rectale; 4) lors d'une augmentation rapide et importante de la température rectale et; 5) lors d'une diminution rapide et importante de la température rectale. Treize (10 hommes, 3 femmes) participants (31 ± 9 ans) ont complété de manière séquentielle, tout en portant une sonde rectale câblée (YSI 401) liée à une sonde télémétrique (CorTemp) : 1) 30 minutes de repos (23 °C); 2) 45 minutes de repos à l’intérieur d’une chambre por
