- Abstract
Detection probability is an important input when studying and managing species. It reduces the miscalculations of the estimates of occupancy, population abundances and their trends inherent to the imperfect detection during sampling. However, detection probability may vary in relation to environmental and biological factors, such as the presence of other species of similar ecological niche. We used a two-species single-season occupancy model to analyse the detection probability of the native Eurasian otter Lutra lutraand the invasive American mink Neovison visonin the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula and to test for potential differences in their detection when co-occurring and when not. Despite the known behavioural change of American mink towards a more terrestrial diet and a more diurnal activity pattern in the presence of Eurasian otter, their detectability did not vary when both species co-occurred versus when they did not. However, we observed seasonal differences in the probability of detection. Specifically, the probability of detection was higher in winter for both species. Furthermore, Eurasian otter was more often detected in sites with clay substrate, whereas American mink in sites with clay and rocks. These results indicate that the effectiveness of monitoring of Eurasian otter and American mink remains independent of the species co-occurrence. Yet, seasonal variations in the detection should be taken into account when monitoring.

Results from scat sampling of 409 fluvial sections to establish distribution of Galemys pyrenaicus in Catalonia are shown. Presence of the G. pyrenaicus was corroborated in 108 sections along the basins of Ter, Segre, Noguera Pallaresa-Flamisell, and Garona rivers, whereas the species seems to be absent in the basins of Llobregat-Cardener and Noguera Ribagorçana rivers. Frequency of presence-positive sections was higher at the Garona and Noguera Pallaresa basins (around 45%) than at the Segre and Ter basins (around 20%), the minimum frequency being found at the almost independent sub-basin of the Flamisell river (8.3%). While a minimum altitudinal limit, ranging between 700 and 1100 m, seems to determine the distribution of G. pyrenaicus in south-oriented slopes with Mediterranean influence, no elevation limit seems to exist at north-oriented slopes with Atlantic influence. The distribution of the species is not continuous but fragmented -either by natural or artificial causes- in nuclei of variable size differently interconnected. Within the Ter basin and Flamisell sub-basin, habitat availability is scarce and highly fragmented, which may confer a vulnerable status to the occurring populations.

- Abstract
This paper provides an overview of the last 40 years of use, and in many cases abuse, of the natural resources in Catalonia, a country that is representative of European countries in general, and especially those in the Mediterranean region. It analyses the use of natural resources made by mining, agriculture, livestock, logging, fishing, nature tourism, and energy production and consumption. This use results in an ecological footprint, i.e., the productive land and sea surface required to generate the consumed resources and absorb the resulting waste, which is about seven times the amount available, a very high number but very similar to other European countries. This overexploitation of natural resources has a huge impact on land and its different forms of cover, air, and water. For the last 25 years, forests and urban areas have each gained almost 3% more of the territory at the expense of agricultural land; those municipalities bordering the sea have increased their number of inhabitants and activity, and although they only occupy 6.7% of the total surface area, they account for 43.3% of the population; air quality has stabilized since the turn of the century, and there has been some improvement in the state of aquatic ecosystems, but still only 36% are in good condition, while the remainder have suffered morphological changes and different forms of nonpoint source pollution; meanwhile the biodiversity of flora and fauna remains still under threat. Environmental policies do not go far enough so there is a need for revision of the legislation related to environmental impact and the protection of natural areas, flora, and fauna. The promotion of environmental research must be accompanied by environmental education to foster a society which is more knowledgeable, has more control and influence over the decisions that deeply affect it. Indeed, nature conservation goes hand in hand with other social and economic challenges that require a more sustainable vision. Toda

- Abstract
When a population shows a marked morphological change, it is important to know whether that population is genetically distinct; if it is not, the novel trait could correspond to an adaptation that might be of great ecological interest. Here, we studied a subspecies of water shrew, Neomys fodiens niethammeri, which is found in a narrow strip of the northern Iberian Peninsula. This subspecies presents an abrupt increase in skull size when compared to the rest of the Eurasian population, which has led to the suggestion that it is actually a different species. Skulls obtained from owl pellets collected over the last 50 years allowed us to perform a morphometric analysis in addition to an extensive multilocus analysis based on short intron fragments successfully amplified from these degraded samples. Interestingly, no genetic divergence was detected using either mitochondrial or nuclear data. Additionally, an allele frequency analysis revealed no significant genetic differentiation. The absence of genetic divergence and differentiation revealed here indicate that the large form of N. fodiens does not correspond to a different species and instead represents an extreme case of size increase, of possible adaptive value, which deserves further investigation.

De moment, només es pot actuar controlant la població amb paranys «en viu», però s'ha d'augmentar sistemàticament l'esforç i l'efectivitat de captura de visons mitjançant l'ús de plataformes., We studied the expansion and ecology of the American mink in Catalonia (NE Spain) using 2567 records of the species collected between 1974 and 2014 as part of the National Control Project and previous literature data. The species expanded from occupying one 10×10-km cell located in northern Montseny in the 1970s to 159 cells of the same size in 2014. The average expansion rate was 0.39 cells/year at the start of the invasion, but it increased to 0.91 cells per year in the last five years. The species currently occupies more than 2770 km of river and 2 km2 of wetlands, with an estimated population size of between 5725 and 8390 resident adults. Nevertheless, annual mortality in the population is high (50%) with a high turnover rate (average of 5-6 foetuses per female) and few individuals living to 4-5 years. The distribution of the species is best explained by the availability of prey and resting sites, as well as other environmental factors such as distance to rivers, land-use diversity, summer and annual rainfall and the minimum annual temperature. The diet of the species was composed mainly of small mammals, birds, fish and crayfish, with seasonal differences. American mink poses a serious threat to native biodiversity, such as the European mink and European polecat in Europe and Catalonia, respectively. The control project is still ongoing but more systematic work is needed to increase the effectiveness of the platform traps to reduce the invasive species and safeguard the native ones.

- Abstract
The ongoing academization of gastronomic studies indicates the necessity for a commonly accepted classification system for cooks that does not contradict scientific approaches. This work discusses the fundamentals used by chefs and scientists to classify unelaborated food products; proposes taxonomic gastronomy as a new interdisciplinary framework that studies the taxonomy surrounding gastronomy; and presents a categorization of unelaborated food products that follows commonly accepted culinary criteria yet avoids contradiction by scientific knowledge. As little literature focuses on these issues, and similar experiences are scarce, it is concluded that further cross-disciplinary endeavors such as this will continue to be greatly fruitful.

- Abstract
The Pyrenean desman (Galemys pyrenaicus) is a small semi-aquatic mammal endemic to the Iberian Peninsula. The species has recently experienced a strong decline and some of its populations are severely threatened with extinction. To help in the preservation of this species, it is critical to understand its genetic structure and main evolutionary units, as these may have specific local adaptations and could be of great conservation value. Sequencing reduced representation libraries (ddRAD) from 26 specimens selected from across its entire range, we obtained around 45,000 loci per specimen and 1185 single nucleotide polymorphisms. Heterozygosity varied substantially among individuals from different areas. Interestingly, specimens from the southeastern Pyrenees had some of the lowest proportions of heterozygous positions inferred from genome-wide data in mammals so far. In addition, we estimated a tree reflecting genomic divergence, performed a principal component analysis, and carried out a Bayesian analysis of the population structure. Combined evidence supported the existence of five distinct genomic clusters largely coincident with the main mountain ranges where the species occurs, with few specimens presenting relevant admixture levels. There was good correspondence between these populations and the mitochondrial lineages detected in a previous study, yet substantial differences in some areas demonstrate the importance of performing genomic analysis to reveal the whole population history. Although the analysis of further specimens is necessary to better characterize the distribution of the different evolutionary units, the distinctive geographical structure of this species revealed by the genomic data should be considered in future conservation plans.

- Abstract
[Background] Multilocus data are becoming increasingly important in determining the phylogeny of closely related species and delimiting species. In species complexes where unequivocal fossil calibrations are not available, rigorous dating of the coalescence-based species trees requires accurate mutation rates of the loci under study but, generally, these rates are unknown. Here, we obtained lineage-specific mutation rates of these loci from a higher-level phylogeny with a reliable fossil record and investigated how different choices of mutation rates and species tree models affected the split time estimates. We implemented this strategy with a genus of water shrews, Neomys, whose taxonomy has been contentious over the last century., [Results] We sequenced 13 introns and cytochrome b from specimens of the three species currently recognized in this genus including two subspecies of N. anomalus that were originally described as species. A Bayesian multilocus species delimitation method and estimation of gene flow supported that these subspecies are distinct evolutionary lineages that should be treated as distinct species: N. anomalus (sensu stricto), limited to part of the Iberian Peninsula, and N. milleri, with a larger Eurasian range. We then estimated mutation rates from a Bayesian relaxed clock analysis of the mammalian orthologues with several fossil calibrations. Next, using the estimated Neomys-specific rates for each locus in an isolation-with-migration model, the split time for these sister taxa was dated at 0.40 Myr ago (with a 95 % confidence interval of 0.26 – 0.86 Myr), likely coinciding with one of the major glaciations of the Middle Pleistocene. We also showed that the extrapolation of non-specific rates or the use of simpler models would lead to very different split time estimates., [Conclusions] We showed that the estimation of rigorous lineage-specific mutation rates for each locus allows the inference of robust split times in a species tree framework. These times, in turn, afford a better understanding of the timeframe required to achieve isolation and, eventually, speciation in sister lineages. The application of species delimitation methods and an accurate dating strategy to the genus Neomys helped to clarify its controversial taxonomy.

- Abstract
[Background] Species with strict ecological requirements may provide new insights into the forces that shaped the geographic variation of genetic diversity. The Pyrenean desman, Galemys pyrenaicus, is a small semi-aquatic mammal that inhabits clean streams of the northern half of the Iberian Peninsula and is endangered in most of its geographic range, but its genetic structure is currently unknown. While the stringent ecological demands derived from its aquatic habitat might have caused a partition of the genetic diversity among river basins, Pleistocene glaciations would have generated a genetic pattern related to glacial refugia., [Results] To study the relative importance of historical and ecological factors in the genetic structure of G. pyrenaicus, we used mitochondrial and intronic sequences of specimens covering most of the species range. We show, first, that the Pyrenean desman has very low levels of genetic diversity compared to other mammals. In addition, phylogenetic and dating analyses of the mitochondrial sequences reveal a strong phylogeographic structure of a Middle Pleistocene origin, suggesting that the main lineages arose during periods of glacial isolation. Furthermore, both the spatial distribution of nuclear and mitochondrial diversity and the results of species distribution modeling suggest the existence of a major glacial refugium in the northwestern part of the Iberian Peninsula. Finally, the main mitochondrial lineages show a striking parapatric distribution without any apparent exchange of mitochondrial haplotypes between the lineages that came into secondary contact (although with certain permeability to nuclear genes), indicating incomplete mixing after the post-glacial recolonization. On the other hand, when we analyzed the partition of the genetic diversity among river basins, the Pyrenean desman showed a lower than expected genetic differentiation among main rivers., [Conclusions] The analysis of mitochondrial and intronic markers in G. pyrenaicus showed the predominant effects of Pleistocene glaciations on the genetic structure of this species, while the distribution of the genetic diversity was not greatly influenced by the main river systems. These results and, particularly, the discovery of a marked phylogeographic structure, may have important implications for the conservation of the Pyrenean desman.

Communication presented at the 17th International Congress on Acoustics, Rome, 2-7 September 2001., Premature damage of mortar and concrete structures, due to environmental action, demands procedures to estimate durability of this type of components. Mortar or concrete composition (e.g., grain size, type and percentage of sand) may have some influence in the durability, but it is mainly related to porosity, which determines the interaction between aggressive agents and material. In this work, several NDE ultrasonic methods to estimate porosity of mortar are presented and evaluated. In these methods porosity is related to (1) the material structural noise, (2) sound velocity and (3) ultrasonic attenuation. In all these methods mortar is consider to be formed by only two phases: solid and pores., This work has been supported by Spanish Administration under grants CICYT TAP97-1128 and DPI2000-0619.

- Abstract
Patterns of daily activity and the factors affecting it were studied in an invading Mediterranean population of American mink, Neovison vison, radiotracked in the northeast of Spain during the post breeding season (winter – half year). We distinguished between local activity, defined as active behaviour without spatial displacement, locomotion activity as active locomotion behaviour while foraging or travelling, and inactivity. We studied the effect of sex, age, daylight (nocturnal or diurnal), month, river flow and average rainfall on the activity of eight males and three females. Male mink presented more locomotion activity than females and subadult mink had more locomotion activity than adult mink. Average rainfall per day had a negative effect on locomotion, while daylight had no effect on either total activity or locomotion activity. Studied mink spent most of their time inactive in-den. These results are accordance with the patterns of activity shown by other native and invasive populations.

- Abstract
Space use, intra-territorial habitat preferences, and factors affecting both were studied in an invading population of American mink, Mustela vison, in two rivers of a Mediterranean region of Spain. Average linear home range was 1.19 ± 0.73 km (±SD) and core area was 0.21 ± 0.08 km for resident males (n = 10); while for females (n =5) they were 0.54 ± 0.14 and 0.19 ± 0.11 km, respectively. Overlapping between the home ranges of residents was low. In no case their core areas overlapped. Home ranges were small in comparison to other study areas and in general the resident minks were territorial. Linear home range length was related to individual weight and to the river. Weight had a positive effect indicating a potential body condition effect, while river may be showing a habitat quality effect. Habitat preferences were positively affected by the abundance of helophytic vegetation and negatively by the presence of human activity. Helophytic vegetation offers both food and refuges, while human activity may represent a potential danger. Percentage of captures was higher inside the core areas and was slightly influenced positively by abundance of helophytic vegetation. All this information should be considered when designing and implementing measures to control the expansion of Amer- ican minks. We recommend keeping going with the trapping sessions but, given the results obtained, reducing the distance between traps down to 200 m to maximize capturability (i.e., about doubling the trapping effort), and, when available, placing them near helophytic vegetation. In the absence of helophytic vegetation, traps should be located near any kind of vegetation providing coverage for mink and far from human activity

For the recovery and conservation of endangered species such as the southern water vole A rvicola sapidus, it is important to understand the effects of predation on their populations., The impact of a predator on a prey species depends on the dynamics and structure of their populations, the abundance of both species and their relationships with other species. When considering broad geographic areas, the analysis of the trophic dimension can provide an estimate of the effect of predatory pressure on the prey., To determine the potential impact of predators on the southern water vole, we used information provided in 74 studies concerning the diet of predators in the geographical range of the prey species. The trophic spectrum was determined based on faeces, stomach contents or pellets in which the arvicoline was present., Based on the percentage of biomass consumed in each of nine trophic categories, the potential impact posed by predators was linked with dietary profile, trophic diversity, intensity of southern water vole consumption and availability of preferred prey., In the localities studied, southern water voles are not the preferred prey of any of the predators we considered, but represent an alternative prey for some of them, especially when their main prey species are scarce. The predators with the greatest potential impact on southern water vole populations are L utra lutra and A rdea cinerea; those with a moderate impact are some mesocarnivores ( F elis silvestris, G enetta genetta, N eovison vison, V ulpes vulpes and M artes foina), a bird frequenting aquatic environments ( C iconia ciconia), and the raptors A quila fasciatus and H ieraaetus pennatus., The results obtained may be useful in the planning of measures for the conservation of the southern water vole, such as translocations or reintroductions, and in the design of strategies to reduce predatory pressure with the aim of promoting the success of these programmes.
