Skin secretions of amphibian are an interesting source of biologically active peptides. The present study provides the profile of the skin secretions of the brown frog Rana temporaria from Zvenigorod population (Russia). Sequencing of the skin secretion components has been carried out on an ion cyclotron resonance instrument with electrospray ionization and two methods of fragmentation activation, collisional activation and electron capture. For sequencing of the peptides containing intermolecular C-terminal disulfide cycle two methods of disulfide bond opening have been used: reduction with subsequent alkylation of the free thiol groups and oxidation with performic acid with the formation of sulfo-acid groups. The peptide profile of Rana temporaria studied by a complex mass spectral method has been compared with the data for the frogs of other European populations of this species. For the first time we have revealed ornithokinin--antagonist of the ornithokinin receptor--in skin secretions of amphibians. Keywords: Rana temporaria, Fourier transformation ion cyclotron resonance, mass spectral sequencing, disulfide-containing peptides, ornithokinin, temporins. DOI: 10.1134/S1061934811140152, INTRODUCTION Recently the area of our interest has moved to the mass spectral investigation of skin peptides of amphibian, in particular, of ranid frogs, true frogs Rana. Amphibian skin secretion represents a cerain scientific interest as a source of biologically active natural peptides. In the present research skin peptidome of wide-spread European frog Rana lessonae (Camerano, 1882) was studied for the first time ever. Peptide sequencing was accomplished with Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer in collision-induced and electron capture dissociation modes. A portion of amphibian peptides contains intramolecular C-terminal disulfide cycle which obstructs mass spectrometric sequencing. Two methods were utilized to overcome this difficulty: reduction with dithiotreithol followed by thiol group alkylation and oxidation into sulfonic acid groups with performic acid. Integrated approach employed in the present study allowed the identification of 49 peptides (of 6 to 37 amino acid residues), including 19 novel species. Keywords: Rana lessonae, Fourier-transform ion cyclotrone resonance mass spectrometry, peptide sequencing, disulfide-containing peptides, lessonakinines. DOI: 10.1134/S1061934811130120, INTRODUCTION Skin of amphibians represents a rich source of natural peptides possessing wide spectrum of biological (gram positive and gram negative bacteria, fungi, viruses) activity [1-4]. Mass spectrometric de novo sequencing of skin secretion peptides from genus Rana is complicated because of C-terminal disulfide cycles present in their structure. Brevinin-1E and brevinin-2Ec from the skin secretion of the Marsh Frog R. ridibunda were used for a comparative study of six N-phenylmaleimide derivatives as new alkylating agents for cysteine thiol moieties. The paper describes the synthesis and confirmation of the structures of the obtained compounds. A procedure was developed for modifying thiol groups with the proposed reagents. Alkylation efficiency and the effect on the peak intensity in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) spectra were investigated. The best results were obtained for 2,4- and 2,5-dimethylphenylmaleimides. Additionally tested iodoacetic acid was shown to be a powerful modifier of thiol groups, while its excess notably increases the intensities of the peaks of protonated molecules in the MALDI mass spectra of both peptides. Keywords: disulfide-containing peptides, alkylation, cysteine, N-phenylmaleimide, MALDI-TOF, iodoacetic acid DOI: 10.1134/S1061934810130034, INTRODUCTION Peptides characterized by a wide spectrum of biological activity are the main components of skin secretions from genus Rana [1-3]. The new facility fragment separator ACCULINNA-2 will be put into operation at the beginning of 2015 in FLNR JINR. The new separator is destined to add considerably to the studies of drip-line nuclei performed with the use of variety of direct reactions known to be distinctive to the 15 – 50 MeV/amu exotic secondary RIBs. Intense beams provided by the U-400M cyclotron will ensure the achievement of this objective. In addition to the RIB separation accomplished by means of the dipole-wedge-dipole selection, the addition of a zero-degree dipole magnet setup is foreseen. A long (13 m) straight section will provide precise time-of-flight measurements.

The low-lying spectra of 8He and 10He nuclei were studied in the 3H(6He, p)8He and 3H(8He, p)10He transfer reactions. The 0+ ground state (g.s.) of 8He and excited states, 2+ at 3.6 - 3.9 MeV and (1+) at 5.3 - 5.5 MeV, were populated with cross sections of 200, 100-250, and 90-125 μb/sr, respectively. Some evidence for a 8He state at about 7.5 MeV was obtained. We discuss a possible nature of the near-threshold anomaly above 2.14 MeV in 8He and relate it to the population of a 1- continuum (soft dipole excitation) with a peak value at about 3 MeV. The lowest energy group of events in the 10He spectrum was observed at ∼3 MeV with a cross section of ∼ 140 μb / sr. We argue that this result is consistent with the previously reported observation of 10He providing the new 10He g.s. position at about 3 MeV. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. An isomeric state in $^{209}$Ra has been observed for the first time, using the GABRIELA setup at the focal plane of VASSILISSA, to decay to the ground state of $^{209}$Ra via a cascade of 238-keV (M2) and 644-keV transitions. The half-life of the isomer has been measured to be 117(5) $\mu$s and from systematics is assigned as a neutron i ^{-1}_{13/2} excitation.

Excited states in 249Fm were populated via the alpha decay of 253No and the subsequent decay was observed with the GABRIELA detection system installed at the focal plane of the VASSILISSA recoil separator. The energies, spins, and parities of these states could be established through combined alpha, gamma, and conversion-electron spectroscopy. The first members of the ground-state rotational band were identified. Their excitation energies as well as the observation of a cross-over E2 transition confirm the assignment of 7/2+[624] for the ground state of 249Fm. Two excited states were also observed and their decay properties suggest that they correspond to the particle excitation 9/2-[734] and hole excitation 5/2+[622]. The analysis suggests that the 279-keV transition de-exciting the 9/2- state has anomalous E1 conversion coefficients.

- Abstract
Complete fusion (CF) and incomplete fusion (ICF) reactions were studied for the cases of the loosely bound 6He and 6Li projectiles bombarding 166Er and 165Ho targets at energy of about 10 MeV/nucleon. Experiments were carried out to test an approach exploiting the measured intensities of γ rays emitted at the transitions between the yrast-band levels of reaction products formed after the termination of neutron evaporation. Partial waves feeding the CF reactions 165Ho ( 6Li, 5n) 166Yb and 166Er( 6He, 6n) 166Yb as well as ICF 165Ho ( 6Li, α3n) 164Er and 166Er( 6He, α4n) 164Er reaction channels were revealed from the obtained γ-ray data. The method of exit channel identification via the triple coincidence (γ1-γ2-light charged particle) was employed for these reactions study. © 2012 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
An IN2P3-JINR collaboration has launched a project called GABRIELA at the Flerov Laboratory for Nuclear Reactions (FLNR) within the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna (Russia). The goal of the project is to perform gamma-ray and internal conversion electron spectroscopy of heavy nuclei produced in fusion-evaporation reactions and transported to the focal plane of the recoil separator VASSILISSA. During five experimental campaigns of GABRIELA, the detection system has gained in sensitivity and new spectroscopic information has been obtained for 249Fm, 251Fm, 253No and 255Lr. © 2010 American Institute of Physics., SCOPUS: cp.p, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
Low-energy spectra of the 8,10He nuclei were investigated in the (t, p) -type reactions at small centre-of-mass angles using ̃ 25 AMeV beams of 6He and 8He nuclei. The 0+ ground state (g. s.) of 8He and excited states, 2+ at 3. 6-3. 9MeV and (1+) at 5. 3-5. 5MeV, were populated with cross-sections of 200, 100-250, and 90-125μb/sr, respectively. To account for a near-threshold anomaly observed in the 8He spectrum the population of a 1- continuum (soft dipole excitation) was considered. The lowest-energy group of events in the 10He spectrum was observed at ̃ 3 MeV with a cross-section of ̃ 140 μb/sr. This result is consistent with the previously reported observation of 10He providing a new g. s. position for 10He at about 3MeV. © Societá Italiana di Fisica / Springer-Verlag 2009., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
- Abstract
The low-lying spectrum of 8He was studied in the 3H(6He, p)8He transfer reaction for small center of mass angles. The 0+ ground state (g.s.) of 8He and excited states, 2+ at 3.6-3.9 MeV and (1+) at 5.3-5.5 MeV, were populated with cross sections of 200, 100-250, and 90-125 μb/sr. Some evidence for the excited state at about 7.5 MeV can be found in the data. The possible nature of the near-threshold anomaly above 2.14 MeV in 8He is related to the population of a 1- continuum (soft dipole excitation) with a peak energy value at about 3 MeV. This assumption can probably resolve the problem of a large uncertainty existing in the experimental data on the 8He 2+ state energy. © Pleiades Publishing, Ltd. 2009., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
The spectrum of 10He was studied by means of the 3H(8He, p)10He reaction at a laboratory energy of 25 MeV/A and small center-of-mass angles. Missing mass spectrum of 10He was derived from the obtained p-8He coincidence. A resolution of 0.7 MeV was achieved in this spectrum for the measured 10He energy. Most likely, a well isolated group of 10 events detected between 2 and 5 MeV and showing a maximum at about 3 MeV in the spectrum of the present work exhibits the 10He g.s. resonance. © EDP Sciences and Springer 2008., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
An isomeric state in Lr255 with a half-life of t1/2=1.4(1) ms and Ex>720-keV has been observed for the first time using the GABRIELA setup at the focal plane of the VASSILISSA separator. Based on its K-forbiddeness, the configuration of the state is most probably formed by coupling the valence proton to a two quasiparticle neutron excitation. Possible three quasiparticle configurations are discussed. © 2008 The American Physical Society., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
In 2004, the GABRIELA (Gamma Alpha Beta Recoil Investigation with the Electromagnetic Analyzer VASSILISSA) collaboration started a twofold scientific program at the FLNR (Dubna) laboratory: (a) the systematic study of the behaviour of single particle states within isotopic and isotonic chains with Z = 100-104 as N varies from 152 to 162 and (b) the study of isotopes for which very little spectroscopic information is known. After discussing the Physics motivations and the experimental setup, some new results concerning the structure of 249Fm and 253No nuclei, and some preliminary results on the decay of 217Pa decay are presented., SCOPUS: cp.p, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
Isomeric states in 253No have been investigated by conversion electron and γ -ray spectroscopy with the GABRIELA detection system. The 31μs isomer reported more than 30 years ago is found to decay to the ground state of 253No by the emission of a 167keV M2 transition. The spin and parity of this low-lying isomeric state are established to be 5/2 + .The presence of another longer-lived isomeric state is also discussed. © Società Italiana di Fisica and Springer-Verlag 2007., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Detailed spectroscopic information of excited nuclear states in deformed transfermium nuclei is scarce. Most of the information available today has been obtained from investigations of fine structure α decay. Although α decay gives access to hindrance factors and lifetimes which are strongly correlated to shell/subshell closures and the presence of isomers, only the combined use of γ and conversion electron spectroscopy allows the precise determination of excitation energy, spin and parity of nuclear levels. In particular, the study of odd isotopes gives crucial information on the single particle states available at and around the Fermi surface. In the following, the preliminary results of decay studies using α - γ and α - beta coincidences at the focal plane of the VASSILISSA recoil separator are presented. © 2007 American Institute of Physics., SCOPUS: cp.p, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
With the aid of the Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation package a new detection system has been designed for the focal plane of the recoil separator VASSILISSA situated at the Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions, JINR, Dubna. GABRIELA (Gamma Alpha Beta Recoil Investigations with the ELectromagnetic Analyser VASSILISSA) has been optimised to detect the arrival of reaction products and their subsequent radioactive decays involving the emission of α- and β-particles, fission fragments, γ- and X-rays and conversion electrons. The new detector system is described and the results of the first commissioning experiments are presented. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
Excited states in Fm249 were populated via the α decay of No253 and the subsequent decay was observed with the GABRIELA detection system installed at the focal plane of the VASSILISSA recoil separator. The energies, spins, and parities of these states could be established through combined α,γ, and conversion-electron spectroscopy. The first members of the ground-state rotational band were identified. Their excitation energies as well as the observation of a cross-over E2 transition confirm the assignment of 7/2+[624] for the ground state of Fm249. Two excited states were also observed and their decay properties suggest that they correspond to the particle excitation 9/2-[734] and hole excitation 5/2+[622]. The analysis suggests that the 279-keV transition de-exciting the 9/2- state has anomalous E1 conversion coefficients. © 2006 The American Physical Society., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
A resonance state situated at 1.8 ± 0.1 and, most likely, another state positioned at 2.7 ± 0.1 MeV above the t+n+n decay threshold were observed in the missing mass energy spectrum of the 5H nucleus produced in the reaction 3H(t,p) 5H. The peak located close to E 5 ≈ H = 1.8 MeV also was seen in the 5H spectrum obtained from the energy distributions of 3H nuclei emitted in the reaction 2H( 6He, 5H) 3He. The width ( ≤ obs ≤ 0.5 MeV) obtained for the two 5H resonance states is surprisingly small. A state of 4H with E res = 3.3 MeV and γ 2 = 2.3 MeV was obtained in the reaction 2H(t,p) 4H from the proton spectrum., SCOPUS: cp.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
To investigate 5H resonance states with a better instrumental resolution, we utilized the two-neutron transfer reaction 3H(t, p)5H accomplished with the use of a cryogenic liquid-tritium target and 57.5-MeV triton beam. As a result of this study, a valuable fraction of protons detected at θlab = 18°-32° in ptn coincidence events was attributed to the states of the 5H nucleus. Two resonance states situated at 1.8 plusmn; 0.1 and 2.7 ± 0.1 MeV above the t + n + n decay threshold were obtained in the missing mass energy spectrum of the 5H nucleus. The peak located close to E5H = 1.8 MeV was clearly seen in the H spectrum obtained from the energy distributions of 3H nuclei emitted in the reaction 2H(6He, 5H)3He at θ lab = 17°-32°. The width (Γobs ≤ 0.5 MeV) obtained for the two 5H resonance states is surprisingly small. A state of 4H with Eres = 3.3 MeV and γ2 = 2.3 MeV was obtained in the reaction 2H(t, p)4H from the spectra of protons leaving the target at θlab = 18°-32° and detected in coincidence with neutrons emitted in the decay of 4H nuclei. © 2003 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica"., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
Resonance states of 5H were investigated through the two-neutron transfer reaction t(t, p)5 H. A triton beam at 57.5 MeV and a cryogenic liquid tritium target were used. The 5H missing mass spectrum in triple coincidence, proton + triton + neutron, shows a resonance at 1.8 ± 0.1 MeV above the t + 2n decay threshold. This energy is in good agreement with the result reported in Phys. Rev. Lett. 87 (2001) 092501. The resonance width, Γintr ≤ 0.5 MeV, is surprisingly small and difficult to reconcile with theory predictions. © 2003 Published by Elsevier B.V., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published
