8. Good infinity : Hegel, Levinas and the accomplishment of ethical life

Abstract

This study presents a critique of the social and political thought of Emmanuel Levinas. We aim to demonstrate that Levinas' hostile characterisation of Hegel's System serves to disguise a latent 'Hegelian' dimension in his own thought. Levinas' covert Hegelianism has essentially three aspects: first, Levinas, like Hegel, advances a post-critical concept of the infinite; second, his philosophical discourse bears a strong family resemblance to Hegel's speculative logic: and, third, notwithstanding his protests to the contrary, his philosophy exhibits a systematic structure (in the speculative sense of the term). By identifying these speculative motifs in Levinas' work we show, first, that it is possible to subject Levinas to an immanent Hegelian critique and we then proceed to execute it. The dominant trend in Levinasian interpretation, follows Derrida, and tends to overlook the significance of Levinas' concept of society. We aim to show, however, that the notion of a visible ethical community is at the centre of Levinas' philosophy. Moreover, we attempt to demonstrate that Levinas’ concept of an ethical community is ultimately incompatible with the subjective principle underlying modem social and political life. This in turn leads Levinas to violate his own emphasis on respecting the absolute alterity of the Other. Finally, we attempt to show that Hegel's System provides a way of redeeming the ambition of Levinas' philosophy, while avoiding its negative implications.

Abstract

Egyptian broadcasting traditionally confined religious content to a few minutes of Quran recitation and one weekly programme. Under Mubarak, however, changes in economic and media regulation combined with satellite technology to challenge the state media monopoly, causing the government to veto any religious channel that formally identified itself as such. Even so, proliferating satellite channels, funded internally and externally, included many linked to Salafi interests, the Muslim Brotherhood or the Coptic church. Exploring specifics of channels in each group, this chapter shows how tight government censorship, instead of containing sectarianism, exacerbates a situation in which members of different faith communities rarely hear each other.

30. The effects of concurrent biomechanical biofeedback on novel skill acquisition.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the effects of concurrent biomechanical biofeedback on the ability of novices to modify relative knee, spine, and elbow motions during a rowing-type task. After six non-instructed practice sessions, novices were assigned to a biofeedback (BFb; n = 7) or control group (Con; n = 7), before six, ten-minute sessions of continuous rowing were performed over 2 weeks. The BFb group received concurrent, visual biofeedback for developing sequential timing of knee, spine, and elbow motions during the pull. Following the intervention, the BFb group demonstrated delayed elbow flexion initiation (pre-intervention, 46 ± 11% pull; post-intervention, 78 ± 3% pull; p = 0.001). The biofeedback further promoted the consecutive ending of joint rotations (BFb: knee, 69 ± 4% pull; spine, 73 ± 7% pull; elbow, 85 ± 3% pull; Con: knee, 79 ± 8% pull; spine, 28 ± 6% pull; elbow, 79 ± 4% pull) and a move towards the sequential sequencing pattern. Concurrent biomechanical biofeedback during short-term training altered technique, possibly by providing guidance towards the desired movement pattern and increasing error detection and correction capabilities. 32. Photostability enhancement of pyrromethene 567 and perylene orange in oxygen-free liquid and solid dye lasers

Abstract

We investigated the effect of oxygen on the photostability of the laser dyes Pyrromethene 567, Perylene Orange, and Rhodamine 590 by determining their longevity of laser operation when pumped by the second harmonic of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. In solution, dissolved oxygen accelerated the photo-degradation of Pyrromethene 567 and Perylene Orange but not Rhodamine 590. The photostability of Pyrromethene 567 was also found to be dependent on the solvent and on the lifetime of singlet oxygen. Deoxygenated Pyrromethene 567 doped polycom glass and modified poly(methyl methacrylate) (MPMMA) samples were tested for longevity of laser operation. A factor of 6 improvement in photostability was found for Pyrromethene 567 in MPMMA upon deoxygenation, and the total absorbed energy per mole of dye molecules to one-half output pulse energy was 36 GJ [mol.sup.-1]. Abstract

Approaching the Middle East through the lens of Diaspora Studies, the 11 detailed case studies in this volume explore the experiences of different diasporic communities in and of the region, and look at the changing conceptions and practice of diaspora in the modern Middle East. They show how concepts central to diaspora such as'homeland','host state','exile','longing','memory'and'return'have been deconstructed and reinstated with new meaning through each complex diasporic experience. They also examine how different groups have struggled to claim and negotiate a space for themselves in the Middle East, and the ways in which these efforts have been aided and hampered by the historical, social, legal, political, economic, colonial and post-colonial specificities of the region.In situating these different communities within their own narratives - of conflict, resistance, war, genocide, persecution, displacement, migration - these studies stress both the common elements of diaspora but also their individual specificity in a way that challenges, complements and at times subverts the dominant nationalist historiography of the region.

Egypt just before political eruption! Turns of the century in Africa's northeastern corner have been critical moments, ushering in overt popular activism in the hope of radical political redirection — as this volume's focus on Egypt's 19th-century fin-de-siècle demonstrates. This period witnessed crisscrossing and conflicting political currents as well as fluctuating economic, geopolitical, social and demographic conditions and cultural processes. Like Egypt's 20th-century fin-de-siècle, much of this ferment was a prelude to the more visible and politically eruptive events of the next decades, when Egypt's popular resistance burst onto the international scene. But its subterranean cast was no less dynamic for that.

Abstract

First paragraph: Movement, migration and diasporisation lie at the heart of the Middle East, in the past and in the present day. Historically, the region has been a heterogeneous site where distinct communities, differentiated by origin and orientation, have coexisted through many periods of conflict and longer times of peace. Some of these displaced communities have been threatened and persecuted; others have kept their difference discreet and maintained low profiles in order to blend in. At different points, some communities rose to positions of prominence and power, while, for others, their very existence was precarious. From the late nineteenth century, dynamic political changes meant that many of these groups have struggled to claim and negotiate a space for themselves, and, increasingly, to protect and sustain it.
