The RES-NOVA project is an experimental initiative aimed at detecting neutrinos from the next galactic supernova using PbWO$_{4}$ cryogenic detectors, operated at low temperatures in a low-background environment. By utilizing archaeological lead (Pb) as the target material, RES-NOVA leverages its high radiopurity, large nuclear mass, and the natural abundance of $^{207}$Pb, making it well-suited for exploring both spin-independent and spin-dependent Dark Matter (DM) interactions via nuclear scattering. This work presents a background model developed for the RES-NOVA technology demonstrator and evaluates its implications for Dark Matter detection. Detailed calculations of nuclear matrix elements, combined with the unique properties of archaeological Pb, demonstrate RES-NOVA's potential as a complementary tool to existing direct detection experiments for studying Dark Matter interactions. The experiment will conduct DM searches over a broad mass range spanning 4 orders of magnitude, from sub-GeV/$c^2$ to TeV/$c^2$. In the most optimistic scenario, RES-NOVA is expected to probe DM-nucleon cross-sections down to 1$\times 10^{-43}$ cm$^2$ and 2$\times 10^{-46}$ cm$^2$ for candidates with masses of 2 GeV/$c^2$ and 20 GeV/$c^2$, respectively.

Many type systems have been presented in the literature for variants of the pi-calculus, but none of them are able to handle composite subjects such as those found in the language epi, which features polyadic synchronisation. The purpose of this paper is to address the question of how to type composite subjects in a general fashion. We assess the validity of our proposal by first proving the standard correctness results for a type system (i.e., subject reduction and type safety). Then, we follow the path opened by Sangiorgi in 1998 and show an encoding in epi of a minimal OO language called WC (While with \Classes) whose ``expectable'' type system exactly corresponds to the one induced by ours via the encoding. This comparison contributes to understanding the relationship between our types and conventional types for OO languages.

We continue the development of TinySol, a minimal object-oriented language based on Solidity, the standard smart-contract language used for the Ethereum platform. We first extend TinySol with exceptions and a gas mechanism, and equip it with a small-step operational semantics. Introducing the gas mechanism is fundamental for modelling real-life smart contracts in TinySol, since this is the way in which termination of Ethereum smart contracts is usually ensured. We then devise a type system for smart contracts guaranteeing that such programs never run out of gas at runtime. This is a desirable property for smart contracts, since a transaction that runs out of gas is aborted, but the price paid to run the code is not returned to the invoker.

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a detector array comprised by 988 5$\;$cm$\times$5$\;$cm$\times$5$\;$cm TeO$_2$ crystals held below 20 mK, primarily searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay in $^{130}$Te. Unprecedented in size amongst cryogenic calorimetric experiments, CUORE provides a promising setting for the study of exotic through-going particles. Using the first tonne-year of CUORE's exposure, we perform a search for hypothesized fractionally charged particles (FCPs), which are well-motivated by various Standard Model extensions and would have suppressed interactions with matter. No excess of FCP candidate tracks is observed over background, setting leading limits on the underground FCP flux with charges between $e/24-e/5$ at 90\% confidence level. Using the low background environment and segmented geometry of CUORE, we establish the sensitivity of tonne-scale sub-Kelvin detectors to diverse signatures of new physics., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We present the model we developed to reconstruct the CUORE radioactive background based on the analysis of an experimental exposure of 1038.4 kg yr. The data reconstruction relies on a simultaneous Bayesian fit applied to energy spectra over a broad energy range. The high granularity of the CUORE detector, together with the large exposure and extended stable operations, allow for an in-depth exploration of both spatial and time dependence of backgrounds. We achieve high sensitivity to both bulk and surface activities of the materials of the setup, detecting levels as low as 10 nBq kg$^{-1}$ and 0.1 nBq cm$^{-2}$, respectively. We compare the contamination levels we extract from the background model with prior radio-assay data, which informs future background risk mitigation strategies. The results of this background model play a crucial role in constructing the background budget for the CUPID experiment as it will exploit the same CUORE infrastructure.

In this paper we focus on TinySol, a minimal calculus for Solidity smart contracts, introduced by Bartoletti et al. We start by rephrasing its syntax (to emphasise its object-oriented flavour) and give a new big-step operational semantics. We then use it to define two security properties, namely call integrity and noninterference. These two properties have some similarities in their definition, in that they both require that some part of a program is not influenced by the other part. However, we show that the two properties are actually incomparable. Nevertheless, we provide a type system for noninterference and show that well-typed programs satisfy call integrity as well; hence, programs that are accepted by our type system satisfy both properties. We finally discuss the practical usability of the type system and its limitations by means of some simple examples.

This paper focuses on the runtime verification of hyperproperties expressed in HypermuHML, an expressive yet simple logic for describing properties of sets of traces. To this end, we first consider a simple language of monitors that can observe sets of system executions and report verdicts w.r.t. a given HypermuHML formula. In this setting, a unique omniscient monitor observes all system traces, and, in this sense, it is 'centralized'. However, in a possibly distributed system, having a centralized entity is undesirable; hence, we also provide a language for 'decentralized' monitors, where each trace has its own monitor, and monitors for different traces can yield a unique verdict by communicating their observations. For both the centralized and the decentralized settings, we provide a synthesis procedure that, given a formula, yields a monitor that is correct (i.e., sound and violation complete). A key step in proving the correctness of the synthesis for decentralized monitors is a result showing that, for each formula, the synthesized centralized monitor and its corresponding decentralized one are weakly bisimilar for a suitable notion of weak bisimulation.

The effectiveness of a test suite in detecting faults highly depends on the correctness and completeness of its test oracles. Large Language Models (LLMs) have already demonstrated remarkable proficiency in tackling diverse software testing tasks, such as automated test generation and program repair. This paper aims to enable discussions on the potential of using LLMs for test oracle automation, along with the challenges that may emerge during the generation of various types of oracles. Additionally, our aim is to initiate discussions on the primary threats that SE researchers must consider when employing LLMs for oracle automation, encompassing concerns regarding oracle deficiencies and data leakages.

The main goal of the CRESST-III experiment is the direct detection of dark matter particles via their scattering off target nuclei in cryogenic detectors. In this work we present the results of a Silicon-On-Sapphire (SOS) detector with a mass of 0.6$\,$g and an energy threshold of (6.7$\, \pm \,$0.2)$\,$eV with a baseline energy resolution of (1.0$\, \pm \,$0.2)$\,$eV. This allowed for a calibration via the detection of single luminescence photons in the eV-range, which could be observed in CRESST for the first time. We present new exclusion limits on the spin-independent and spin-dependent dark matter-nucleon cross section that extend to dark matter particle masses of less than 100$\,$MeV/c$^{2}$., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

The matter-antimatter asymmetry underlines the incompleteness of the current understanding of particle physics. Neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu \beta\beta$) decay may help explain this asymmetry, while unveiling the Majorana nature of the neutrino. The CUORE experiment searches for $0\nu \beta\beta$ decay of $^{130}$Te using a tonne-scale cryogenic calorimeter operated at milli-kelvin temperatures. We report no evidence for $0\nu \beta\beta$ decay and place a lower limit on the half-life of T$_{1/2}$ $>$ 3.8 $\times$ 10$^{25}$ years (90% C.I.) with over 2 tonne$\cdot$year TeO$_2$ exposure. The tools and techniques developed for this result and the 5 year stable operation of nearly 1000 detectors demonstrate the infrastructure for a next-generation experiment capable of searching for $0\nu \beta\beta$ decay across multiple isotopes.

In recent times, the sensitivity of low-mass direct dark matter searches has been limited by unknown low energy backgrounds close to the energy threshold of the experiments known as the low energy excess (LEE). The CRESST experiment utilises advanced cryogenic detectors constructed with different types of crystals equipped with Transition Edge Sensors (TESs) to measure signals of nuclear recoils induced by the scattering of dark matter particles in the detector. In CRESST, this low energy background manifests itself as a steeply rising population of events below 200 eV. A novel detector design named doubleTES using two identical TESs on the target crystal was studied to investigate the hypothesis that the events are sensor-related. We present the first results from two such modules, demonstrating their ability to differentiate between events originating from the crystal's bulk and those occurring in the sensor or in its close proximity., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures

Cryogenic scintillating calorimeters are ultrasensitive particle detectors for rare event searches, particularly for the search for dark matter and the measurement of neutrino properties. These detectors are made from scintillating target crystals generating two signals for each particle interaction. The phonon (heat) signal precisely measures the deposited energy independent of the type of interacting particle. The scintillation light signal yields particle discrimination on an event-by-event basis. This paper presents a likelihood framework modeling backgrounds and a potential dark matter signal in the two-dimensional plane spanned by phonon and scintillation light energies. We apply the framework to data from CaWO$_4$-based detectors operated in the CRESST dark matter search. For the first time, a single likelihood framework is used in CRESST to model the data and extract results on dark matter in one step by using a profile likelihood ratio test. Our framework simultaneously fits (neutron) calibration data and physics (background) data and allows combining data from multiple detectors. Recently low-mass dark matter direct searches have been hindered by a low energy background, drastically reducing the physics reach of the experiments. In the CRESST-III experiment, this signal is characterised by a significant increase of events below 200 eV. As the origin of this background is still unknown, it became necessary to develop new detector designs to reach a better understanding of the observations. The LUCE (LUtetium sCintillation Experiment) project will search for the 176Lu electron capture based on a milli-Kelvin calorimetric approach. This decay is of special interest in the field of nuclear structure, with implications for the s-process and for a better comprehension of the nuclear matrix elements of neutrinoless double beta decay (0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta}) and two-neutrino double beta decay (2{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta}). Possible impacts also include the development of a new class of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE{\nu}NS) and spin-dependent (independent) dark matter detectors. Diamond operated as a cryogenic calorimeter is an excellent target for direct detection of low-mass dark matter candidates. Following the realization of the first low-threshold cryogenic detector that uses diamond as absorber for astroparticle physics applications, we now present the resulting exclusion limits on the elastic spin-independent interaction cross-section of dark matter with diamond. We measured two 0.175 g CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) diamond samples, each instrumented with a W-TES. Thanks to the energy threshold of just 16.8 eV of one of the two detectors, we set exclusion limits on the elastic spin-independent interaction of dark matter particles with carbon nuclei down to dark matter masses as low as 0.122 GeV/c2. This work shows the scientific potential of cryogenic detectors made from diamond and lays the foundation for the use of this material as target for direct detection dark matter experiments., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

A multivariate cryptograpic instance in practice is a multivariate polynomial system. So the security of a protocol rely on the complexity of solving a multivariate polynomial system. In this paper there is an overview on a general algorithm used to solve a multivariate system and the quantity to which the complexity of this algorithm depends on: the solving degree. Unfortunately, it is hard to compute. For this reason, it is introduced an invariant: the degree of regularity. This invariant, under certain condition, give us an upper bound on the solving degree. Then we speak about random polynomial systems and in particular what "random" means to us. Finally, we give an upper bound on both the degree of regularity and the solving degree of such random systems.

Using CaWO$_4$ crystals as cryogenic calorimeters, the CRESST experiment searches for nuclear recoils caused by the scattering of potential Dark Matter particles. A reliable identification of a potential signal crucially depends on an accurate background model. In this work we introduce an improved normalisation method for CRESST's model of the electromagnetic backgrounds. Spectral templates, based on Geant4 simulations, are normalised via a Bayesian likelihood fit to experimental background data. Contrary to our previous work, no assumption of partial secular equilibrium is required, which results in a more robust and versatile applicability. Furthermore, considering the correlation between all background components allows us to explain 82.7% of the experimental background within [1 keV, 40 keV], an improvement of 18.6% compared to our previous method., Comment: 38 pages, 15 figures, accepted version to JINST

Which integer sequences are sequences of generalized weights of a linear code? In this paper, we answer this question for linear block codes, rank-metric codes, and more generally for sum-rank metric codes. We do so under an existence assumption for MDS and MSRD codes. We also prove that the same integer sequences appear as sequences of greedy weights of linear block codes, rank-metric codes, and sum-rank metric codes. Finally, we characterize the integer sequences which appear as sequences of relative generalized weights (respectively, relative greedy weights) of linear block codes., Comment: 19 pages

We consider the problem of unfair discrimination between two groups and propose a pre-processing method to achieve fairness. Corrective methods like statistical parity usually lead to bad accuracy and do not really achieve fairness in situations where there is a correlation between the sensitive attribute S and the legitimate attribute E (explanatory variable) that should determine the decision. To overcome these drawbacks, other notions of fairness have been proposed, in particular, conditional statistical parity and equal opportunity. However, E is often not directly observable in the data, i.e., it is a latent variable. We may observe some other variable Z representing E, but the problem is that Z may also be affected by S, hence Z itself can be biased. To deal with this problem, we propose BaBE (Bayesian Bias Elimination), an approach based on a combination of Bayes inference and the Expectation-Maximization method, to estimate the most likely value of E for a given Z for each group. The decision can then be based directly on the estimated E. We show, by experiments on synthetic and real data sets, that our approach provides a good level of fairness as well as high accuracy.

We report on the results obtained with the global CUPID-0 background model, which combines the data collected in the two measurement campaigns for a total exposure of 16.6 kg$\times$yr. We identify with improved precision the background sources in the region of interest for neutrinoless double $\beta$-decay, making more solid the foundations for the background budget of the next-generation CUPID experiment. Relying on the excellent data reconstruction, we measure the two-neutrino double $\beta$-decay half-life of $^{82}$Se with unprecedented accuracy: $T_{1/2}^{2\nu} = [8.69 \pm 0.05 \textrm{(stat.)}~^{+0.09}_{-0.06} \textrm{(syst.)}] \times 10^{19}~\textrm{yr}$.

The MacWilliams' Extension Theorem is a classical result by Florence Jessie MacWilliams. It shows that every linear isometry between linear block-codes endowed with the Hamming distance can be extended to a linear isometry of the ambient space. Such an extension fails to exist in general for rank-metric codes, that is, one can easily find examples of linear isometries between rank-metric codes which cannot be extended to linear isometries of the ambient space. In this paper, we explore to what extent a MacWilliams' Extension Theorem may hold for rank-metric codes. Sum-rank metric codes are a natural extension of both linear block codes and rank-metric codes. They have several applications in information theory, including multishot network coding and distributed storage systems. The aim of this chapter is to present the mathematical theory of sum-rank metric codes, paying special attention to the $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear case in which different sizes of matrices are allowed. We provide a comprehensive overview of the main results in the area. In particular, we discuss invariants, optimal anticodes, and MSRD codes. In the last section, we concentrate on $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$-linear codes.

CUPID is a next-generation bolometric experiment aiming at searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay with ~250 kg of isotopic mass of $^{100}$Mo. It will operate at $\sim$10 mK in a cryostat currently hosting a similar-scale bolometric array for the CUORE experiment at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (Italy). CUPID will be based on large-volume scintillating bolometers consisting of $^{100}$Mo-enriched Li$_2$MoO$_4$ crystals, facing thin Ge-wafer-based bolometric light detectors. In the CUPID design, the detector structure is novel and needs to be validated. In particular, the CUORE cryostat presents a high level of mechanical vibrations due to the use of pulse tubes and the effect of vibrations on the detector performance must be investigated. In this paper we report the first test of the CUPID-design bolometric light detectors with NTD-Ge sensors in a dilution refrigerator equipped with a pulse tube in an above-ground lab. Light detectors are characterized in terms of sensitivity, energy resolution, pulse time constants, and noise power spectrum. Despite the challenging noisy environment due to pulse-tube-induced vibrations, we demonstrate that all the four tested light detectors comply with the CUPID goal in terms of intrinsic energy resolution of 100 eV RMS baseline noise. Indeed, we have measured 70--90 eV RMS for the four devices, which show an excellent reproducibility. We have also obtained outstanding energy resolutions at the 356 keV line from a $^{133}$Ba source with one light detector achieving 0.71(5) keV FWHM, which is -- to our knowledge -- the best ever obtained when compared to $\gamma$ detectors of any technology in this energy range., Comment: Prepared for submission to JINST; 16 pages, 7 figures, and 1 table
