The LUCE (LUtetium sCintillation Experiment) project will search for the 176Lu electron capture based on a milli-Kelvin calorimetric approach. This decay is of special interest in the field of nuclear structure, with implications for the s-process and for a better comprehension of the nuclear matrix elements of neutrinoless double beta decay (0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta}) and two-neutrino double beta decay (2{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta}). Possible impacts also include the development of a new class of coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE{\nu}NS) and spin-dependent (independent) dark matter detectors. The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO 2 crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers, each of them made of 52 crystals. The construction of the experiment was completed in August 2016 and the data taking started in spring 2017 after a period of commissioning and tests. In this work we present the neutrinoless double beta decay results of CUORE from examining a total TeO 2 exposure of 86.3 kg yr, characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 counts/(keV kg yr). In this physics run, CUORE placed a lower limit on the decay half-life of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130 Te ≤ 1.3 · 10 25 yr (90% C.L.). Moreover, an analysis of the background of the experiment is presented as well as the measurement of the 130 Te 2vββ decay with a resulting half-life of T 2v1/2 = [7.9 ± 0.1 (stat.) ± 0.2 (syst.)] x 10 20 yr which is the most precise measurement of the half-life and compatible with previous results.

Thermal detectors have recently achieved a leading position in the fields of neutrinoless double beta decay and dark matter searches thanks to excellent energy resolution and numerous absorber material choices. These detectors operate at temperatures of a few mK and do not have dead layers. Contaminations on the surface of faced materials have thus to be taken into account as sources of background. We propose a scintillation-based approach for rejecting surface background and discuss the innovative application of this technique in non-scintillating bolometric detectors.

Many low-threshold experiments observe sharply rising event rates of yet unknown origins below a few hundred eV, and larger than expected from known backgrounds. Due to the significant impact of this excess on the dark matter or neutrino sensitivity of these experiments, a collective effort has been started to share the knowledge about the individual observations. For this, the EXCESS Workshop was initiated. In its first iteration in June 2021, ten rare event search collaborations contributed to this initiative via talks and discussions. The contributing collaborations were CONNIE, CRESST, DAMIC, EDELWEISS, MINER, NEWS-G, NUCLEUS, RICOCHET, SENSEI and SuperCDMS. They presented data about their observed energy spectra and known backgrounds together with details about the respective measurements. In this paper, we summarize the presented information and give a comprehensive overview of the similarities and differences between the distinct measurements. © Copyright owned by the author(s). CUORE is a ton-scale experiment approaching the data taking phase in Gran Sasso National Laboratory. Its primary goal is to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay in 130 Te using 988 crystals of tellurim dioxide. The crystals are operated as bolometers at about 10 mK taking advantage of one of the largest dilution cryostat ever built. Concluded in March 2016, the cryostat commissioning consisted in a sequence of cool down runs each one integrating new parts of the apparatus. The last run was performed with the fully configured cryostat and the thermal load at 4 K reached the impressive mass of about 14 tons. During that run the base temperature of 6.3 mK was reached and maintained for more than 70 days. An array of 8 crystals, called mini-tower, was used to check bolometers operation, readout electronics and DAQ. Results will be presented in terms of cooling power, electronic noise, energy resolution and preliminary background measurements.

- Abstract
The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO[subscript 2] crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers, each of them made of 52 crystals. The construction of the experiment was completed in August 2016 and the data taking started in spring 2017 after a period of commissioning and tests. In this work we present the neutrinoless double beta decay results of CUORE from examining a total TeO[subscript 2] exposure of 86.3kgyr , characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 counts/(keVkgyr) . In this physics run, CUORE placed a lower limit on the decay half-life of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te>1.3⋅1025 yr (90% C.L.). Moreover, an analysis of the background of the experiment is presented as well as the measurement of the 130 Te 2 νββ decay with a resulting half-life of T2ν1/2=[7.9±0.1(stat.)±0.2(syst.)]×1020 yr which is the most precise measurement of the half-life and compatible with previous results. ©2019 Keywords: neutrinoless double beta decay; CUORE; Majorana Neutrino, National Science Foundation (grant nos. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals arranged in a cylindrical compact structure of 19 towers, each of them made of 52 crystals. The construction of the experiment was completed in August 2016 and the data taking started in spring 2017 after a period of commissioning and tests. In this work we present the neutrinoless double beta decay results of CUORE from examining a total TeO2 exposure of 86.3kg yr, characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 counts/ (keV kg yr). In this physics run, CUORE placed a lower limit on the decay half- life of neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te > 1.3.1025 yr (90% C. L.). Moreover, an analysis of the background of the experiment is presented as well as the measurement of the 130Te 2vo3p decay with a resulting half- life of T2 2. [7.9 :- 0.1 (stat.) :- 0.2 (syst.)] x 10(20) yr which is the most precise measurement of the half- life and compatible with previous results

- Abstract
CUPID-0 is the first large array of scintillating Zn82Se cryogenic calorimeters (bolometers) implementing particle identification for the search of the neutrinoless double beta decay (0). The detector consists of 24 enriched Zn82Se bolometers for a total 82Se mass of 5.28 kg and it has been taking data in the underground LNGS (Italy) since March 2017. In this article we show how the dual read-out provides a powerful tool for the particles rejection. The simultaneous use of the heat and light information allows us to reduce the background down to (3.2-1.1+1.3)x10-3counts/(keV kg year), an unprecedented level for cryogenic calorimeters. In a total exposure of 5.46 kg year Zn82Se we set the most stringent limit on the 0 decay 82Se half-life T1/20>4.0x1024 year at 90% C.I

- Abstract
CUPID-0 is the first large mass experiment based on cryogenic calorimeters (bolometers) that implements the dual read-out of light and heat for background rejection. The detector, consisting of 24 enriched Zn82Se crystals (5.28 kg of 82Se), is taking data in the underground LNGS (Italy) from March 2017. In this contribution we present the analysis that allowed to set the most stringent limit on the half-life of neutrino-less double beta decay of 82Se. We prove that the particle identification, enabled by the simultaneous read-out of heat and light, provides an unprecedented background level for cryogenic calorimeters of few 103 counts/keV/kg/y. Finally, we discuss the impact of these results on next generation projects.

- Abstract
The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a 1-ton scale bolometric experiment. The CUORE detector is an array of 988 TeO 2 crystals arranged in a cylindrical, compact, and granular structure of 19 towers. These detectors will need a base temperature lower than 10 mK in order to meet the performance specifications. To cool the CUORE detector, a large cryogen free cryostat with five pulse tubes and one custom designed high power dilution refrigerator has been designed. The three vessels that form the outer shell of the CUORE cryostat were produced in 2012 and are now assembled in the Gran Sasso National Laboratories (LNGS). We report here the detailed description of the 4 K outer cryostat for the CUORE experiment together with the results of the validation tests done at the production site in 2012 and of the first commissioning to 4 K at LNGS in 2013. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

A detailed description of the CUORICINO Te130 neutrinoless double-beta (0 νββ) decay experiment is given and recent results are reported. CUORICINO is an array of 62 tellurium oxide (TeO2) bolometers with an active mass of 40.7 kg. It is cooled to ~8-10 mK by a dilution refrigerator shielded from environmental radioactivity and energetic neutrons. It is running in the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Assergi, Italy. These data represent an exposure of 11.83 kg yr or 91 mole-years of Te130. No evidence for 0νββ-decay was observed and a limit of T1/20ν(130Te)≥3. 0×1024y (90% CL) is set. This corresponds to an upper limit on the effective mass, mν, between 0.19 and 0.68 eV when analyzed with the many published nuclear structure calculations. In the context of these nuclear models, the values fall within the range corresponding to the claim of evidence of 0νββ-decay by H. V. Klapdor-Kleingrothaus The experiment continues to acquire data.

Double Beta Decay, Neutrino mass, Thermal Detectors - Abstract
The CUORICINO ßß-decay detector is an array of 62 TeO2 bolometers; 44 are 5 × 5 × 5-cm crystals made with natural tellurium (33.8% 130Te). There are 18, 3 × 3 × 6-cm crystals, 14 of which are made of natural tellurium, 2 are isotopically enriched to 75% in 130Te, and 2 are enriched to 82.3% in 128Te. The total mass of 130Te is ~ 11 kg. The background rate is 0.23 ± 0.04 counts/keV/kg/yr in the energy interval 2480 to 2600 keV. During the cooling process, some of the wires became disconnected and only 32 of the large and 16 of the smaller crystals could be read out. The data presented here come from 29 of the 5×5×5-cm crystals containing 6.2 kg of 130Te. The new limit on the half-life is T0v >= 5×1023 yr, corresponding to an effective Majorana mass of the electron neutrino between 0.42 and 2.05 eV, depending on the nuclear model used to analyze the data.

- Abstract
Large-mass bolometers are today extensively used for dark matter and double beta decay searches, in both cases the ultimate experimental sensitivity is defined by the background level reached in such devices. The most common background sources and the techniques used for their identification and reduction are here reviewed, with a particular focus on double beta decay searches. The relevant role played by Monte Carlo simulations in this field is discussed. As a real case, the background optimization in the MiDBD experiment is described

- Abstract
The main problem for experiments using the bolometric technique to search for rare events is the contribution of surface contamination to the background. In this paper a new technique for the identification of the origin of events will be described. The idea is to shield the main bolometer with bolometric shields. Tests on small and large prototypes and the promising results will be reported.

- Abstract
After an introduction on the various experimental techniques to be adopted in searches for double beta decay, the new approach based on the use of cryogenic low temperature detectors is described. The present results are reported on the limit for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te obtained with the large bolometric detector CUORICINO. This setup consists of 44 cubic crystals of natural TeO2 with 5 cm sides and 18 crystals of 3×3×6 cm3. Four of these latter crystals are made with isotopically enriched materials: two in 128Te and two others in 130Te. With a sensitive mass of 40.7 kg, this array is by far the most massive running cryogenic detector. The array is operated at a temperature of ∼10 mK in a dilution refrigerator under a heavy shield in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory at a depth of about 3500 m.w.e. The counting rate in the region of neutrinoless double beta decay is 0.18±0.02 counts keV -1 kg-1 y-1, among the lowest in this type of experiment. No evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay is found. The corresponding lower limit for the lifetime of this process is 2×1024 years at 90% C.L. The resultant upper limit on the effective neutrino mass ranges between 0.2 and 1.0 eV, depending on the theoretically calculated nuclear matrix elements. This constraint is the most restrictive one, except for those obtained with Ge diodes, and is comparable to them. The second part of this report is devoted to the present status of the construction of the larger experiment CUORE (Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events) formed from 988 bolometers with a cubic TeO2 absorber of size 5×5×5 cm3, with a total mass of ∼750 kg. We present technical details of the CUORE setup as well as of its location and our efforts to reduce radioactive backgrounds. © 2006.

- Abstract
CUORICINO is a bolometric experiment on Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay (DBDOv) of 130Te. It consists of an array of 62 Te02 crystals with a total mass of - 40.7 kg. While being a self consistent experiment CUORICINO is also a good test for the feasibility of the next generation experiment CUORE, -750 kg of Te02 bolometric mass. In this paper last results from CUORICINO and prospects for the future CUORE experiment will be reported.

- Abstract
Two TeO2 crystal bolometers of 1.3 kg each, the largest single crystals ever operated with this technique, have been successfully realized and tested below 10 mK, in a dilution refrigerator located deep underground in the Gran Sasso National Laboratories. The calibration spectrum, obtained using an external 232Th gamma-ray source, shows an energy resolution of 3–4 keV FWHM from 0.5 to 2.6 MeV, for both detectors. In the a region, a 4.3 keV FWHM resolution has been observed on the 5407 keV peak due to the a decay of 210Po, a natural contaminant of TeO2 crystals

- Abstract
We present our circuit solution for the implementation of a very simple temperature stabilization system of an array of 62 large mass bolometric detectors, CUORICI The implemented instrument exploits one of the front-end channels to close the feedback loop between a thermistor and a heather, both of them located on the detector holder in the refrigerating system. Avery compact layout was developed that avoids any possible presence of EMI interference, which would otherwise be introduced if a commercial instrument were adopted. The stabilized temperature is obtained exploiting the offset correcting circuit of the remotely programmable front-end channel to autogenerate the reference operating point for the feedback loop. Thanks to the adopted configuration, the instability of the cryogenic apparatus, which induced a drift corresponding to about 50 keV/day, was reduced to less than about 0.5 keV/day. To model the system behavior, we have reformulated the bolometer theory of operation using the concept of a feedback network. The obtained results will be shown. © 2005 IEEE.

- Abstract
CUORE is a proposed tightly packed array of 1000 TeO2 bolometers, each being a cube 5 cm on a side with a mass of 760 g. The array consists of 25 vertical towers, arranged in a square of 5 towers×5 towers, each containing 10 layers of four crystals. The design of the detector is optimized for ultralow-background searches: for neutrinoless double-beta decay of 130Te (33.8% abundance), cold dark matter, solar axions, and rare nuclear decays. A preliminary experiment involving 20 crystals 3×3×6 cm3 of 340 g has been completed, and a single CUORE tower is being constructed as a smaller-scale experiment called CUORICINO. The expected performance and sensitivity, based on Monte Carlo simulations and extrapolations of present results, are reported. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

- Abstract
After 3 years of project study and development, a 40 kg, 62-crystal, thermal detector array CUORICINO started last February. It is supposed to test the two claimed, but still not confirmed, evidences in Dark Matter and in Double Beta Decay (DBD) reported in the last few years and it will have a first glance on Solar Axion. The technical goals that were forseen for this experiment would be the confirmation on the feasibility of the CUORE experiment, a 1 ton multipurpose experiment with bolometers, that could open a new era in DBD physics. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. - Abstract
The first results are reported on the limit for neutrinoless double decay of 130Te obtained with the new bolometric experiment CUORICINO. The set-up consists of 44 cubic crystals of natural TeO2, 5 cm on the side and 18 crystals of 3×3×6 cm3. Four of these latter crystals are made with isotopically enriched materials: two in 128Te and two others in 130Te. With a sensitive mass of ∼ 40 kg, our array is by far the most massive running cryogenic detector to search for rare events. The array is operated at a temperature of ∼ 10 mK in a dilution refrigerator under a heavy shield in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory at a depth of about 3500 m.w.e. The counting rate in the region of neutrinoless double beta decay is ∼ 0.2 counts keV−1 kg−1 y−1, among the lowest in this type of experiment. No evidence for neutrinoless double beta decay is found with the present statistics obtained in about three months with a live time of 72%. The corresponding lower limit for the lifetime of this process is of 5.5×1023 years at 90% C.L. The corresponding limit for the effective neutrino mass ranges between 0.37 to 1.9 eV depending on the theoretically calculated nuclear matrix elements used. This constraint is the most restrictive one except those obtained with Ge diodes, and is comparable to them.

© Copyright owned by the author(s). CUORE is a ton-scale experiment approaching the data taking phase in Gran Sasso National Laboratory. Its primary goal is to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay in 130 Te using 988 crystals of tellurim dioxide. The crystals are operated as bolometers at about 10 mK taking advantage of one of the largest dilution cryostat ever built. Concluded in March 2016, the cryostat commissioning consisted in a sequence of cool down runs each one integrating new parts of the apparatus. The last run was performed with the fully configured cryostat and the thermal load at 4 K reached the impressive mass of about 14 tons. During that run the base temperature of 6.3 mK was reached and maintained for more than 70 days. An array of 8 crystals, called mini-tower, was used to check bolometers operation, readout electronics and DAQ. Results will be presented in terms of cooling power, electronic noise, energy resolution and preliminary background measurements.
